Bio

My life goal is to become a compassionate and skilled Registered Nurse, with the long-term ambition of advancing to a Nurse Practitioner role. I’m passionate about healthcare because I’ve seen firsthand how critical nurses are in advocating for patients and changing lives—especially during times of crisis. My drive comes from personal experience, determination, and a deep desire to serve others through both clinical skill and emotional support. What makes me a great candidate is my resilience, work ethic, and commitment to personal growth. I’ve worked multiple jobs to fund my education, pursued every opportunity to gain hands-on experience, and remained focused even when faced with personal and financial challenges. I bring not only academic dedication but also empathy, leadership, and a strong sense of responsibility to everything I do. Earning this scholarship would not only ease my financial burden but allow me to continue focusing on becoming the nurse I’ve always dreamed of being.

From the moment I first stepped into the ER as a tech, I knew nursing was where I was meant to be. Over the years, working my way from tech to LVN and now in my final semester of completing my RN at Lamar State College–Port Arthur has taught me more about people than any textbook ever could. I’ve seen fear, grief, and hope all in the same shift and those moments have shaped who I am as both a nurse and a person. My passion for human health and wellness comes from wanting to be the person who makes someone feel safe, seen, and cared for during their most vulnerable moments. I value compassion, teamwork, and integrity, and I believe that healthcare should always be human before clinical. I’ve volunteered at community events, cared for patients across all stages of life, and learned that even the smallest act of empathy can make a lasting impact. Nursing isn’t just a career path for me it’s a calling that continues to push me to grow, learn, and lead with heart. To me, empathy is the foundation of nursing, it’s what bridges science with humanity. It’s not just understanding what someone is going through, but truly feeling it with them. In healthcare, empathy means recognizing that every patient comes with their own story, fears, and strengths. It’s about listening without judgment, showing up with patience, and providing care that values dignity as much as it values outcomes. Throughout my journey as an LVN and now as a future RN, empathy has been my guiding principle. I’ve cared for patients who couldn’t speak, who were terrified of their prognosis, or who just needed someone to sit beside them and listen. Those moments taught me that empathy isn’t a soft skill, it’s a critical one. It builds trust, improves outcomes, and reminds patients that they’re more than a diagnosis. In my future career, whether I’m in a fast-paced ICU or pursuing my dream of aesthetic nursing, I’ll continue to lead with a human centered lens. That means seeing each person as a whole mind, body, and spirit and understanding that wellness goes beyond medicine. I’ll advocate for my patients, communicate with honesty and kindness, and use my platform to educate and uplift others. Empathy also means taking care of our peers and ourselves. Healthcare can be demanding, and maintaining compassion requires self awareness and balance. I’ve learned the importance of teamwork, emotional resilience, and self-reflection to ensure I can keep giving my best to others. At its core, empathy is what transforms care into connection. It’s what allows nurses to turn fear into comfort and uncertainty into trust. I don’t take that responsibility lightly, it’s the reason I chose this path, and it’s the standard I’ll continue to uphold throughout my career.

From an early age, I knew that my path would lead me into a profession where I could help others in meaningful ways. My journey to becoming a nurse has not been a single event but rather a collection of experiences personal, academic, and professional that have shaped my decision and strengthened my commitment to nursing as a career. Each step, from working as a CNA to pursuing my RN degree, has revealed not only the challenges of health care but also the deep rewards of serving patients and their families. My earliest introduction to health care came while working as a certified nursing assistant. In that role, I learned the importance of presence, patience, and compassion. Helping residents with their daily needs was not always glamorous, but it gave me an appreciation for how small acts of care assisting with meals, listening to worries, or offering a hand to hold could restore dignity and make a real difference. Those years taught me that nursing is built on human connection first, and clinical skills second. Building on that foundation, I became an LVN and worked as a nurse. That experience pushed me to grow in confidence and responsibility. I learned to manage medications, perform wound care, and respond quickly in fast-paced settings. Working side by side with RNs and physicians, I realized that I wanted to further my education and take on a broader scope of practice. I knew I had more to give and that advancing to the RN role would open opportunities to care for patients in more complex and critical ways. My time in the RN program has been transformative. Through clinical rotations in obstetrics, emergency care, and critical care, I have seen firsthand the resilience of patients and families in their most vulnerable moments. I have also witnessed the critical thinking and teamwork required to stabilize a trauma patient, comfort a grieving family, or educate a new mother. These experiences confirmed for me that nursing is not just a job, but a calling one that requires skill, adaptability, and compassion in equal measure. Outside of clinical training, I have balanced school with personal challenges, family responsibilities, and community involvement. Volunteering at events in the Port Arthur area, following nurse leaders in long-term care, and even engaging with kids at Ford Park have given me a broader view of how health and well-being extend beyond the hospital walls. My years as a student-athlete also prepared me for the discipline, teamwork, and resilience nursing demands. When I faced setbacks, whether in sports or in life, I learned how to adapt and keep moving forward a mindset that serves me every day in nursing school. Ultimately, my decision to choose nursing as a career comes down to a simple truth: nursing allows me to combine my love for people with my determination to make a difference. Each stage of my journey has reinforced that this is where I belong. As I prepare to graduate with my RN degree this December, I am proud of the path I have taken and excited for the opportunities ahead. Nursing is more than a career for me; it is the fulfillment of my experiences, values, and goals, a lifelong commitment to healing, service, and compassion.

My name is Ashlyn Montgomery, and I am currently pursuing my Associate Degree in Nursing with the ultimate goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. My path to this point hasn’t been easy, but every challenge I’ve faced has shaped me into the determined, compassionate, and resilient person I am today. I grew up with limited support my biological father was incarcerated when I was young and chose not to be a part of my life after his release. I was later adopted by my stepfather at age 12, but even then, I was largely expected to figure things out on my own. Once I started college, any financial or emotional support from my parents stopped, and I had to take full responsibility for my education and future. Despite the financial and emotional strain, I remained focused on my goals. I earned a full athletic scholarship to Bossier Parish Community College as a softball player, where I began my college journey. Later, I transferred to Lamar Institute of Technology to complete the prerequisites needed for nursing school. I earned my LVN license and am now enrolled in the Upward Mobility LVN-to-RN program. Throughout this journey, I have balanced my studies while working two jobs to support myself. It’s exhausting at times, but I know that everything I’m doing is an investment in a better future not just for me, but for the people I’ll care for as a nurse. I chose nursing because I want to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. I’ve always had a natural instinct to care for others, and being in the medical field allows me to do that every single day. Whether I’m holding a patient’s hand during a difficult diagnosis, advocating for them when they feel unheard, or stepping up during emergencies, I want to be the nurse who brings calm, clarity, and comfort. I’m especially passionate about working in emergency or critical care settings, where quick thinking and advocacy can be the difference between life and death. Through my medical career, I plan to serve not only as a healthcare provider but as a voice for those who don’t always have one. I want to challenge biases, fight for equitable care, and never forget the value of human connection in healing. This scholarship would relieve some of the financial pressure and allow me to continue chasing this purpose with everything I have. Thank you!
