Bio

I am a proud single mother of three incredible children who are truly the center of my world and the driving force behind everything I do. Every step I take is rooted in my commitment to creating a safe, stable, and loving future for them. As a survivor of domestic violence, my journey has been shaped by both hardship and resilience. I have faced moments that tested my strength in unimaginable ways, but those experiences have ultimately defined my purpose rather than diminished it. After the birth of my first child, I felt a profound calling to pursue a path in nursing, specifically in the field of childbirth and maternal care. During such a vulnerable and transformative time, I realized how critical compassionate, attentive, and empowering care is for women. I knew then that I wanted to be that source of support for others—someone who not only provides medical care, but also understanding, reassurance, and advocacy. My goal is to support women through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period—times that can be both beautiful and overwhelming, especially for those facing difficult circumstances. I want to ensure that every woman feels seen, heard, and cared for, regardless of her background or situation. Despite the challenges of raising three children on my own, I remain committed to furthering my education and building a meaningful career in nursing. I am determined to turn my experiences into purpose and my struggles into strength—not only for my children, but for every family I will have the privilege to serve in the future.

My name is Ashly Silva, and everything I do begins and ends with my three children—Brady, Ani, and Aftyn. They are still so young, yet they have already given my life its deepest meaning and strongest direction. As their sole parent and caregiver, every decision I make is rooted in one goal: creating a safe, stable, and hopeful future for them. That future did not come easily. Not long ago, I made the most difficult decision of my life—to leave my children’s father. After years of enduring physical, emotional, verbal, and financial abuse, a life-threatening incident made one thing unmistakably clear: staying was no longer an option. I had to choose survival. I had to choose my children. Leaving meant starting over from nothing. Our recent move marked the beginning of that new chapter—one built on safety, healing, and determination. But rebuilding a life as a single-income household has come with significant challenges. Between securing housing, catching up on overdue utility bills, and meeting the daily needs of three growing children, financial strain is a constant reality. Even with careful budgeting, thrift shopping, and stretching every dollar, there are still gaps—gaps that make stability feel just out of reach. Yet despite everything, I have not lost sight of where I am going. I am currently enrolled full-time, working toward acceptance into a nursing program. Nursing is more than a career choice for me—it is a calling shaped by my own experiences. I want to become a nurse midwife, supporting women and families during some of the most vulnerable and transformative moments of their lives. I understand what it means to need compassion, advocacy, and care—and I am determined to provide that for others. This journey is not just about building a career. It is about breaking cycles. Every late night studying, every early morning preparing my children for the day, every sacrifice made—it is all in service of something greater. I want my children to grow up seeing what perseverance looks like. I want them to understand that even in the face of fear and hardship, it is possible to rise, rebuild, and thrive. A scholarship would not simply ease financial pressure—it would create opportunity. It would allow me to focus more fully on my education without the constant weight of financial uncertainty. It would help ensure that my children have the stability they need, from a secure home to everyday essentials. Most importantly, it would bring us one step closer to a future defined not by struggle, but by possibility. I am not asking for a handout. I am asking for a chance. A chance to continue building a life rooted in safety, purpose, and service. A chance to turn my experiences into something meaningful—not only for my family, but for the countless families I hope to care for in the future. Thank you for considering my application and for believing in the power of resilience, determination, and new beginnings.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Hello, I am Ashly Silva, a dedicated mother of three and an aspiring nursing student, reaching out to share my journey and goals. My children are Brady, five; Ani, nearly four; and Aftyn, who recently celebrated her first birthday. They are the core of my existence. As their only parent and caregiver, their childhood is the force behind every aspiration and decision I make. Our recent move was a huge step towards healing and establishing a foundation of safety and stability. This move was necessitated by the need to remove ourselves from a past marred by the dangers of an abusive relationship. The legal and child custody battle continue to demand considerable emotional and mental attention from myself. I am now wholly committed to creating an environment of healing and happiness for my children and myself. The decision to leave my children’s father was the hardest experience I have ever faced. Following a life-threatening incident that lead to immediate danger to our youngest daughter and myself, I recognized with absolute clarity that I had no choice but to escape. After years enduring physical, verbal, financial, and emotional abuse, I finally mustered the courage to stand up for myself and, most importantly, for my children. Despite court orders mandating his distance, the ongoing struggle with harassment and attempts to involve himself in our lives necessitates constant vigilance. A primary application of any financial support would be to enhance the security of our home and property; acquiring additional indoor and outdoor security cameras is an urgent priority to ensure our continued safety. Navigating this transition as a single-income household has lead to debt and struggles. The expenses in establishing a new home, along with overdue utility bills for which I am now solely responsible following my children’s father’s departure from our previous residence, present immediate challenges. My children are also growing incredibly fast, and their clothing and shoe are constantly needing to be replaced. While I seek out thrift stores and second-hand items whenever possible, these efforts do not always cover all essential needs. My determination to forge a stable future for my children remains a priority. I am currently in a full-time academic schedule, working towards acceptance into a nursing program. I chose this career path not only for the financial stability but my want to care and impact meaningful change in the lives of others. My ultimate professional goal is to specialize as a nurse midwife, a role that would allow me to empower and support families during childbirth and early parenthood. This deeply resonates with my own journey of advocating for well-being during and after pregnancy. I want to demonstrate to my children that with determination, no obstacle can prevent them from achieving their dreams. This scholarship would be absolutely transformative, offering not just financial relief but stability my family needs to thrive. It would directly address the immediate concerns of maintaining a secure home, providing essential daily necessities for my children, and ensuring reliable transportation. This critical support would allow me to dedicate my full attention and energy to my academics, and lessening the stress of financial barriers. My daily life is a testament to how I balance my academic commitments and the nurturing of my children. Beyond my coursework, I remain deeply engaged in their lives, coaching my son’s soccer team and diligently seeking out social activities for all three. These efforts are my way of leading by example and demonstrating perseverance. While I am grateful for the ongoing support I receive through FAFSA, these funds primarily address tuition and only a few of my living expenses. Covering the critical day-to-day necessities such as diapers and wipes to laundry detergent, toiletries, and household cleaning supplies, places a substantial and recurring strain on our budget, impacting our family’s ability to truly thrive rather than merely survive. Thank you for considering my application and for the invaluable opportunity to share my story. A scholarship represents far more than mere financial assistance; it is an investment in my family’s future. It would not only help me to achieve my ambitious academic and professional goals but, more importantly, enable me to build the secure, loving, and thriving environment my children so deeply deserve. I want to demonstrate to my children that with determination, no obstacle can prevent them from achieving their dreams. This scholarship would be absolutely transformative, offering not just financial relief but stability my family needs to thrive. This critical support would allow me to dedicate my full attention and energy to my academics, and lessening the stress of financial barriers. Beyond my coursework, I remain deeply engaged in their lives, coaching my son’s soccer team and diligently seeking out social activities for all three. These efforts are my way of leading by example and demonstrating perseverance. Jennifer D. Hale Memorial Scholarship
Motherhood, arriving unexpectedly in my youth, presented a cascade of unforeseen challenges, forcing a rapid and profound evolution of my character. My adolescence was a difficult landscape, marked by the pervasive shadow of depression and a constant undercurrent of uncertainty about my future. I felt adrift, lacking a clear sense of direction or purpose. Then came my son, and with him, a seismic shift in my perception of myself and the world. The overwhelming responsibility of parenthood, while initially daunting, became the unexpected catalyst for a remarkable transformation. The sheer act of nurturing another human being ignited within me a previously dormant wellspring of strength, resilience, and an unparalleled capacity for love and joy. The profound bond we share has not only healed old wounds but has also instilled in me a profound sense of purpose, a feeling of being truly alive and deeply connected to something greater than myself. His unwavering spirit inspired me to confront my past struggles head-on, to embrace the challenges life presented, and ultimately, to build a life filled with meaning and purpose that I had never before imagined possible. His arrival was not just the beginning of motherhood, but the dawn of a new and vibrant chapter in my life, a testament to the incredible power of unconditional love and the transformative potential of unexpected challenges. My journey to motherhood has profoundly shaped my career aspirations. The transformative experience of giving birth to my son ignited a passion within me to support other women through their own childbirth journeys. This experience revealed a deep desire to empower women, not only by providing physical support and guidance on birthing techniques but also by fostering a strong and confident voice for themselves during labor and delivery. My goal is to contribute to a positive and empowering experience for all mothers, and I intend to pursue this passion by initially training as a labor and delivery nurse. I believe my personal experiences, combined with professional training, will allow me to effectively support women in this significant life event. The experiences of giving birth to my son in a hospital and my daughters at home in a birthing pool profoundly shifted my perspective on the incredible resilience and power of the female body. Witnessing the strength and innate wisdom of women during labor, and experiencing the transformative support of other women during those pivotal moments, underscored the profound impact of community and empowerment on the birthing journey. The contrasting settings only served to highlight the diverse ways women can choose to welcome their children into the world, each approach equally valid and powerful in its own right. It was a deeply humbling and awe-inspiring experience that continues to shape my understanding of the incredible capabilities of women. The support, encouragement and shared experiences with other women were invaluable in navigating these very different, yet equally momentous, occasions.
