My life goal is to become a product leader at the intersection of AI, product, and data science—building intelligent systems that are both technically rigorous and socially responsible. I’m currently working toward this goal as a Technical Product Manager on a Models Research team at Microsoft, where I focus on AI model evaluation, benchmarking, and data-driven product development.
I studied at Stony Brook University, where I was deeply involved in leadership and community-building in tech. I served as Vice President of ColorStack at Stony Brook, helping support Black and Latinx students pursuing careers in technology through mentorship and professional development. I also held national leadership roles with Latinas de RTC and participated in several diversity initiatives, all centered on increasing access and representation in tech for underrepresented communities.
These experiences strengthened my passion for data science and product leadership, and helped me realize I want to build my career around understanding and improving AI systems at scale. That’s what led me to pursue further graduate study at the University of California, Berkeley in the Master of Information and Data Science program, where I am currently seeking funding support to make this opportunity accessible.

One Taylor Swift performance that I find the most moving is a live performance of “The Eldest Daughter.” It stands out to me because of how deeply personal and emotionally layered the song feels when performed live.
“The Eldest Daughter” resonates because of its themes of responsibility, pressure, and identity. The performance highlights what it feels like to carry expectations—whether from family, society, or yourself—and still try to figure out who you are underneath all of that. There is a quiet heaviness in the way the song is performed, as if she is acknowledging the emotional weight of being seen as the “responsible one” or the one who has to hold everything together.
What also makes this performance moving is how connected the audience feels to it. Even though the song is deeply personal, the emotions behind it are universal. Many people, especially those who have had to grow up quickly or take on responsibility early in life, can see themselves in it. That shared understanding creates a powerful sense of connection during the performance.
On a personal level, I find this performance meaningful because it reflects the idea that strength is often invisible. People can appear composed and capable on the outside while still carrying a lot internally. Watching that emotion expressed through music makes it feel seen and validated.
Overall, this performance stands out to me because it is not about spectacle, but rather it is about honesty. It shows how Taylor Swift uses her music to tell stories that feel both personal and universal, and how even a quiet performance can have a lasting emotional impact.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
My Love Island challenge is called “Defuse the Bomb.” Couples are split into two separate stations and can’t see each other. One person is the “operator” sitting in front of a fake bomb setup with wires, buttons, and switches. The other person is the “guide” who has the instructions on how to defuse it.
The only way to complete the challenge is through communication. The guide has to clearly explain what the operator should do step by step, while the operator has to listen carefully and execute the instructions correctly. The catch is that the instructions are intentionally a little confusing, so couples can’t just rush through it—they actually have to slow down, ask questions, and make sure they understand each other.
As the challenge goes on, there are distractions added like a ticking timer, loud sounds, or false instructions from producers to test whether couples can stay focused and not panic. Each couple also has a limited number of times they can ask for clarification, so they have to be intentional with how they communicate.
This challenge is important because it shows how couples handle pressure and miscommunication. In relationships, it’s not just about getting along when things are easy—it’s about how well you can communicate when things feel stressful or unclear. If one person shuts down, gets frustrated, or stops listening, the whole challenge fails.
The goal isn’t just to finish the task, but to see which couples can actually work as a team. It reveals who can stay calm, communicate clearly, and trust each other when it really matters.
Lotus Scholarship
Coming from a low-income household taught me resilience at a young age. I grew up understanding that opportunities were not always guaranteed and that progress often required discipline, sacrifice, and persistence. My family worked hard to provide stability, and that experience shaped how I view responsibility and long-term goals. It also taught me that success is rarely linear and often requires continuing forward even when resources are limited.
As a first-generation Latina, I often navigated academics and career pathways without a clear roadmap. Financial stress and uncertainty sometimes made my goals feel distant, but my background also taught me how to be resourceful and self-directed. I learned how to seek opportunities, advocate for myself, and stay focused even when things felt unclear. These lessons have carried into both my education and my career in technology.
Today, I work in the tech industry while pursuing graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley. As I continue pursuing graduate education and long-term career growth, I am approaching student loan debt with intentional planning, discipline, and a focus on long-term financial stability. As a first-generation Latina pursuing graduate studies while working full-time in the tech industry, I understand the importance of balancing educational goals with realistic financial decision-making.
One of the biggest ways I am addressing current and future student loan debt is by continuing to work full-time while completing my graduate degree online through the University of California, Berkeley. This decision was intentional because it allows me to maintain a stable income, continue gaining professional experience, and reduce the amount of debt I may need to take on during graduate school. My employer also offers partial tuition assistance, which helps offset some educational costs and reduce my financial burden.
In addition to maintaining employment, I am actively applying for scholarships to minimize the amount I will need to borrow. Scholarships are especially important to me because they allow me to focus more energy on my education and career development rather than financial stress. Every scholarship opportunity represents a chance to reduce future debt and create greater financial flexibility after graduation.
I am also focused on budgeting carefully and living within my means while pursuing my degree. Living in New York while balancing work and school requires strong financial planning, so I prioritize essential expenses, savings, and educational costs while limiting unnecessary spending. I understand that managing student debt is not only about borrowing less, but also about building responsible financial habits early.
Long-term, I plan to continue growing my career in technology, specifically within AI, product management, and data science. To me, selflessness means showing up for others consistently, even in ways that may seem small. I believe selflessness is not always about grand gestures, but about using your time, knowledge, and energy to make someone else’s life a little easier, especially when they are struggling or unsure of themselves.
One of the biggest ways I try to embody selflessness is through mentorship and community support. As a first-generation Latina working in technology, I understand how intimidating it can feel to enter spaces where you do not always see people who look like you or share similar experiences. Because of this, I have made it a priority to support students and young professionals pursuing STEM and tech careers.
I actively mentor students interested in technology, helping them with technical concepts, coding challenges, resumes, interviews, and career advice. There have been many moments where students doubted their abilities or felt discouraged after rejection or failure. I try to be someone who reminds them that growth takes time and that they are capable of succeeding even when they feel uncertain. Sometimes helping someone simply means listening, encouraging them, and helping them rebuild confidence in themselves.
I also serve as an alumni advisor for ColorStack, an organization that supports underrepresented minorities in tech. Through this role, I help students navigate academic and professional decisions while sharing insights from my own experiences working in the industry. Additionally, I participate in hackathons as a judge and panelist, where I encourage students to continue building and learning rather than focusing only on perfection or competition.
Outside of STEM, I also try to embody selflessness in my personal relationships and community involvement. During difficult periods in my family’s life, including when my aunt was battling cancer, I helped support her and her children however I could. That experience taught me the importance of being emotionally present for others during moments of fear and uncertainty. Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can give someone is your support, consistency, and willingness to stand beside them during hard times.
I also volunteer as a teacher and intentionally work to create a safe and supportive environment for my students. I know that not everyone has someone who encourages them or makes them feel heard, so I try to be patient, approachable, and supportive in ways that help students feel more comfortable asking questions and expressing themselves.
Ultimately, I believe selflessness is about impact rather than recognition. It is about using your experiences, knowledge, and compassion to help others feel supported and capable. My experiences have taught me that even small acts of guidance, encouragement, and kindness can have a lasting effect on someone’s confidence and future, and that is the kind of impact I hope to continue making throughout my life.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My long-term goal is to become a product leader in AI and data science while helping build technology that is both innovative and human-centered. I want to work at the intersection of technology, product development, and ethical innovation, creating systems that improve people’s lives while making technology more accessible and inclusive. I also hope to use my success to give back to my community by supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds and helping create pathways into STEM for others like me.
To reach this goal, I have created a plan centered around education, professional experience, mentorship, and financial stability. One of the most important steps in my plan is pursuing graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. I will complete the program online while continuing to work full-time in New York. This path is important to me because it allows me to strengthen my technical skills in data science while continuing to gain real-world industry experience. I believe combining education with hands-on work will help me grow faster and apply what I learn more effectively.
Financially, continuing to work while attending graduate school is the most sustainable option for me. My employer provides partial tuition assistance, but I am still responsible for tuition gaps, books, educational materials, transportation, and everyday living expenses in New York. Olivia Rodrigo’s music resonates with me because of how honestly she captures complicated emotions that many people struggle to articulate. One lyric that especially connects to my personal journey is from her song making the bed: “I got the things I wanted, it’s just not what I imagined.”
That lyric resonates deeply with me because there have been moments in my life where, from the outside, things appeared successful or stable while internally I was struggling emotionally. As a first-generation Latina pursuing a career in tech, I worked extremely hard to achieve opportunities I once dreamed about—working in the technology industry, pursuing graduate education, and building a future in STEM. However, during some of those same periods, I was also struggling privately with anxiety, depression, and the emotional aftermath of difficult experiences that forced me to reevaluate my relationship with myself and the way I coped with stress.
What makes Olivia Rodrigo’s songwriting powerful to me is that she does not portray growth as simple or linear. Her music acknowledges contradiction: you can be ambitious and still feel lost, successful and still feel disconnected, hopeful while also grieving older versions of yourself. That emotional honesty mirrors my own journey. There were times when I leaned into unhealthy coping mechanisms to avoid confronting difficult emotions, and eventually I had to make intentional changes in my life to prioritize healing, stability, and self-awareness.

For me, it was my hair. It was frizzy, wavy, curly, and never the sleek, straight style that seemed more “ideal” in the environments I grew up in. I became very aware of it early on, especially in middle school and high school, when appearance starts to feel like it carries more weight than it should. I often felt like my hair made me stand out in a way I didn’t fully understand or choose, and I spent a lot of time trying to straighten it, tame it, or make it look more “controlled.”
At the time, I didn’t see it as something unique—I saw it as something I needed to fix. I remember being frustrated that it wouldn’t behave the way I wanted it to, especially on days when I just wanted to blend in. Like many people at that age, I internalized a lot of pressure about how I was supposed to look, and my hair became one of the things I focused on the most.
As I got older, my perspective started to shift. I slowly began to realize that what I was trying to change wasn’t something wrong with me—it was just part of how I naturally am. I have chosen to pursue a degree in STEM because I am deeply interested in how technology, data, and systems shape human behavior, access, and opportunity. Working in tech has shown me that behind every product or algorithm are decisions that influence how people live, communicate, and solve problems. Entering this field, I quickly realized that technical ability alone is not always enough—visibility, mentorship, and access to community play a critical role in whether someone feels like they belong in STEM spaces. Because of this, I have made it a priority not only to grow within the field, but to actively contribute to expanding access and support for others.
One of the most meaningful ways I contribute to the STEM community is through mentoring female-identifying students who are interested in technology. In these relationships, I support both technical and professional development, including explaining core computer science concepts, helping students debug their code, and guiding them as they work through rewriting and improving their solutions when they are stuck. I focus on meeting students where they are and helping them build both competence and confidence. Many students are capable but hesitant, often questioning whether they belong in spaces where they are underrepresented. Mental health is important to me as a student because it directly shapes my ability to learn, focus, and sustain myself through academic and personal challenges. As someone who experiences anxiety, I have learned firsthand that mental health is not separate from academic success—it is the foundation that makes it possible. When my anxiety is heightened, even routine tasks can feel overwhelming. When I am supported and grounded, I am able to think clearly, stay consistent, and fully engage with my goals.
Because of this, I have come to understand mental health as something that requires active care rather than something to ignore or push through. Over time, I have learned to recognize my own patterns, identify triggers, and develop healthier coping strategies. Seeking support, including therapy and intentional self-reflection, has helped me build tools to manage anxiety in ways that allow me to stay focused and emotionally stable while pursuing my education and career goals.

In my community, I advocate for mental health through both openness and action. One of the most meaningful ways I do this is through my volunteer work as a teacher. In that role, I make a conscious effort to create a safe and supportive environment for my students. I prioritize patience, encouragement, and emotional safety, recognizing that students learn best when they feel seen, respected, and not judged. I try to be intentional about small but meaningful actions—checking in with students, listening without judgment, and offering reassurance when someone seems overwhelmed. Outside of teaching, I also try to normalize conversations about mental health with peers. I am currently working in the tech industry, where I have developed experience in product thinking, data-driven decision-making, and understanding how AI and digital systems shape the way people interact with the world. These experiences have shaped my long-term goal of becoming a product leader at the intersection of AI, data science, and human-centered design.
As a first-generation student, I have had to navigate higher education and career pathways without a traditional roadmap. Working in tech has made me especially aware of how systems shape behavior: what we build and how we engage with it directly influences how people communicate, form relationships, and experience one another.
One of the core tensions I see is that modern technology often optimizes for scale, speed, and engagement. While these goals can improve access and efficiency, they can also unintentionally flatten human interaction. Conversations become shorter, more reactive, and more fragmented. People are constantly reachable, yet not always truly present. In this environment, it is easy for connection to feel abundant on the surface but shallow in depth. Preserving authentic connection means resisting the assumption that more communication automatically means better communication.
From my perspective in tech, strengthening human connection begins with asking better product questions. My experiences with mental health have deeply shaped my understanding of myself, my relationships, and the world around me. After a traumatic experience, I went through a period of depression that significantly impacted my emotional well-being and sense of stability. During that time, I struggled with overwhelming emotions and often did not have healthy tools to process what I was feeling. I leaned on alcohol at times as a way to suppress or escape those emotions, which ultimately made things more difficult and contributed to patterns of disconnection and loss of control in my life.
Over time, I began to recognize that avoidance was not a solution and that I needed support to begin healing. Seeking therapy was a turning point in my recovery. It provided me with a structured and supportive space to process my experiences, understand the connection between my emotions and coping behaviors, and begin developing healthier ways to regulate how I respond to stress and pain. Through this process, I learned that healing requires honesty, accountability, and consistent effort rather than avoidance.
This experience has significantly shaped my goals. It has made me more intentional about building a life centered on stability, self-awareness, and emotional well-being. It has also influenced my desire to pursue work where I can contribute to systems that support human needs in meaningful ways.
