I must have faith, otherwise, the trauma that I have experienced would consume me. I must believe that God has a plan. June 11, 2021. I remember the sounds before opening my eyes. It was a rainy Friday. I love rainy mornings. They almost always coerce me back into a coma-like sleep, but not today. A dense and ominous fog hovered around my room looking for an escape; I wish I could escape the events of this week. I felt my bed tilted before I saw him there. My dad, sitting at the edge, my mom not far behind him. Odd. I don’t have my contacts in to see their expressions, but I didn’t need to. I could hear my mom crying little sobs, trying hard to keep her composure as they delivered the news. I had a sense of what they were going to say before the words left their mouths. I begged my mind to take me back to sleep so I could escape the reality of what I knew deep down had come to fruition. Reality won that day, and my dad said the words I had been dreading, “It’s Andre baby, he’s not going to make it. It’s time to say goodbye.” It was as if a vacuum sucked the wind out of my lungs. You see, Andre was my best friend and five days prior he attempted suicide. On June 12, he succumbed to his injuries. It isn’t until something of this magnitude happens that you can fully understand how crippling grief is. It was an adjective that described when someone was sad. I understood that, but I could never have prepared myself for what it would really feel like. The ride to Boston Children’s Hospital was silent, full of anxiety for what I was about to walk in to. I stood beside him, held his hand, and said a silent prayer, willing any power in the universe to wake him up. I had so many questions, but the biggest one was why? The hardest part of overcoming anything related to mental health is acceptance. Mental Health: those two words when isolated separately hold very different meanings, but together represent something so powerful, coupled with a social stigma that can be utterly devastating. That’s the problem with mental health, no one talks about it. I made a promise that day to never remain silent, to tell his story, and that I would follow my dreams as far as they would take me. Bandaging the wounds of my family and sometimes even those of our neighbors, my love for medicine deepened.   It was a passion that cost my parents a small fortune in Band-Aids, but their unwavering support fueled my determination. I yearned to be the one standing bedside when people needed me both at their worst and at their best. From that point on, my decision was clear, and doubt never clouded my path; I was destined to become a nurse.   While the trauma I've endured may never completely heal, with the passage of time, it has evolved from a paralyzing pain into a powerful motivator. It fuels my drive for advocacy and compels me to do more. I am committed to making a positive impact in my community, whether it's through a simple smile shared with a stranger or engaging in conversations with peers about the importance of mental and physical health. I eagerly embrace every challenge as my senior year commences and I will run toward my future with an excitement unmatched and, of course, my box of Band-Aids.

June 11, 2021. I recall the sounds before I even opened my eyes. It was a rainy Friday. I love rainy mornings. They almost always coerce me back into a coma-like sleep.   I sensed a shift in my bed's weight before his presence came into view. It was my dad, perched at the edge, my mom nearby.  Without my contacts, their expressions remained a blur, but it hardly mattered. I could hear my mom struggling to maintain her composure as they shared the heartbreaking news.   I begged my mind to take me back to sleep to avoid the grim reality that I knew was about to be unveiled. But that day, reality proved unyielding. My dad uttered the words I had dreaded for days, “It's Andre, sweetheart. He's not going to make it. It's time to say goodbye.” It was as though a vacuum had stolen the very breath from my lungs. You see, Andre was my best friend. Just five days prior, he had attempted suicide, and on June 12th, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.    It's only when something of this magnitude occurs that one truly comprehends the crippling nature of grief. It was a word I had encountered, an adjective to describe sadness. I knew that much, but I could have never prepared myself for the overwhelming reality of what it would feel like. The ride to the hospital was quiet, filled with anxious anticipation. I stood beside him, holding his hand, silently hoping for any sign of awakening. Numerous questions circled in my mind, but the most pressing was a simple “why?”   As I said goodbye, I readied myself for the road ahead. The most formidable challenge in dealing with anything related to mental health came into focus: acceptance. Mental Health - when separated, these two words carry different meanings, but together they hold profound significance, often shadowed by a societal stigma that can be devastating.   That’s the problem with mental health; no one talks about it.
