Sandy Jenkins Excellence in Early Childhood Education Scholarship
Growing up, I never imagined that I would want to become a teacher. As I got older, though, I realized how much of a difference teachers can make in a child’s life, especially during their early years. Those first few years of school are when children begin to discover who they are, how they learn, and how they interact with others. I want to be someone who helps make that experience positive. That is why I am passionate about early childhood education. My journey through college has also made me realize why I want to teach. I am the first person in my family to go to college, and it has not been easy. During my first year, I struggled to keep my grades up and stay motivated. I questioned whether I was good enough to continue, and there were times when I thought about leaving college to learn a trade instead because I didn’t think I was capable of earning a degree. Looking back now, I am glad I didn’t give up. Those challenges taught me that everyone learns at their own pace and that having someone who believes in you can make all the difference. That is one of the biggest reasons I want to work with young children. I know what it feels like to doubt yourself, and I want to be the kind of teacher who helps children build confidence from the beginning. I want my classroom to be a place where students feel safe asking questions, making mistakes, and trying again. Learning should never make a child feel afraid of failing. Instead, I want my students to know that mistakes are part of growing and that they are capable of more than they realize. I also love the idea that no two days in an early childhood classroom are the same. Young children are naturally curious, creative, and excited to learn about the world around them. Whether it is reading a story together, helping a child learn something new, or watching them become more confident over time, I know those small moments can have a lasting impact. It is rewarding to think that something as simple as encouraging a child or celebrating their progress could help shape the way they feel about school for years to come. For me, becoming a teacher is about more than having a career. It is about making a difference in children’s lives when they are just beginning to discover who they are. I want to be someone who listens, encourages, and creates a classroom where every child feels welcome and valued. My own experiences have taught me how important support and patience can be, and I hope to give those same things to my future students. That is why I am passionate about early childhood education, and it is the career I know I am meant to pursue.
