Growing up, I've faced many challenges that could have easily discouraged me. But I've learned to be resilient, and I'm proud of how far I've come.
As a Haitian immigrant who came to the United States at 11, I had to adapt quickly to a new country, language, and culture. My parents, who never had the opportunity to attend college, worked hard to provide for our family. I knew that education was key to a better life, so I worked hard to excel in school and became an honor student.
In high school, I took advantage of every opportunity to get ahead. I enrolled in Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) and dual enrollment programs, which allowed me to earn college credits while still in high school. I also took College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, which gave me even more college credits. These programs not only saved me time and money but also gave me the confidence to pursue higher education.
Despite my academic success, I struggled to find a job. It was frustrating, but I didn't give up. Instead, I focused on helping my mom with my little sister, picking her up from school, and babysitting. It was a big responsibility, but it taught me valuable skills and showed me the importance of family.
Recently, my dad joined us in the US, but he's not working yet. This means my mom has to handle everything on her own, and I'm happy to help. I translate for my mom when she needs help, and I'm proud to be able to support her.
As the first person in my family to attend college, there's a lot of expectation on me. But I'm determined to succeed. I'm planning to attend a community college to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. With the college credits I earned in high school, I'll be able to transfer them and get a head start on my degree. It's not going to be easy, but I'm ready for the challenge.
Through all these challenges, I've learned to be resilient. I've learned to adapt, to work hard, and to never give up on my dreams. I've also learned the importance of family and community. My experiences have taught me that even when things seem impossible, there's always a way forward.
I hope that my story can inspire others to do the same. Remember that resilience is not just about bouncing back from challenges; it's also about growing and learning from them. Don't be afraid to ask for help, and don't give up on your dreams. With hard work and determination, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve your goals.
