Growing up in a single-parent household has taught me a lot about resilience and independence. My mom has always worked hard to provide for me, often juggling multiple jobs. Up until now, my mom works two jobs to support the household, while I also work two jobs. She comes home late, exhausted but still smiling. I see how much my mom sacrifices for me and how much she believes in my potential. This has made me more responsible and driven to succeed in my studies. I've learned to manage my time well, balancing schoolwork with chores and helping out at home. It hasn't always been easy, but the challenges have made me more determined to achieve my goals and make my mother proud. Seeing my mom's dedication has inspired me to work hard and not give up, no matter how tough things get.
I intend to major in computer science at Western Governors University with the goal to fulfill my educational and career goals. I want to gain practical understanding of the field of computer science. After graduation, I hope to obtain industry and working experience in software development. I am pursuing a STEM degree because I want to use it as a tool to empower people and solve modern-day problems.

I was one of the top students, which allowed me to share my expertise by instructing my classmates in my spare time. Besides tutoring, I spent a lot of my free time making things at home. Powering The Future - Whiddon Memorial Scholarship
On May 4, 2024, after finishing work in the early afternoon, I was heading home on my electric scooter. I rode along the sidewalk and crossed a parking lot to reach another sidewalk. Unexpectedly, a car approached swiftly and hit me. I fell to the ground and lost consciousness briefly, trying to understand what had happened. It felt like my whole life flashed before me. A man from another vehicle asked if I was okay as I struggled to get up. He left after realizing he wasn't involved. I felt helpless, unable to move. Eventually, three people from the car that hit me came out, picked up my scooter, and helped me stand. They dropped me off near my house, left my scooter, apologized, and droke off, leaving me feeling alone and angry.
Recovering from the accident has been tough but manageable. I suffered bruises, scratches, and internal pain. Walking properly was difficult for the first two weeks, and I limped for a month. As someone active in the gym, I had to pause on my usual workout routine. After three MRIs, the doctor found a bone fracture in my left leg and a herniated disc in my lower back. I've been attending physical therapy three days a week for two months and doing yoga and leg stretches at home to improve my mobility. Despite the challenges, I continued working, though it was tough. Thanks to therapy, my left leg has improved significantly, although I still experience shooting pain in my leg and back on some days. I expect about three more months of recovery and rest.
The case is still under investigation, and the individuals who hit me have not been found. I'm patiently waiting through this long process. This experience has taught me patience and consistency. Despite the setback, it motivated me to work harder in school and pursue my goals with determination. This event is just part of my journey, and I refuse to let it hinder my progress.

One of my biggest achievements to date is creating my own software company. This journey started with a simple idea: I wanted to build useful apps that could help people in their everyday lives. Over time, this idea grew into a full-fledged company with several successful apps such as RecapMe, Lady Log, ACNH Fishing Tracker, and Money Master.
The idea for RecapMe came from my own experience of wanting to write down my thoughts without access to a journal. I wanted an app that could help people easily capture and organize their thoughts. I started by learning the basics of app development through online courses and tutorials. Then, I spent countless hours coding and testing different features. Eventually, I created a simple and effective app that allowed users to record and reflect on their ideas, experiences, and memories.
Next, I developed Lady Log. This app was inspired by my desire to create a helpful tool for women to track their menstrual cycles. I knew this could help many women better understand their health and manage their schedules. For Lady Log, I focused on creating a user-friendly interface and including features like period predictions, symptom tracking, and health tips. I also collaborated with a few friends who had experience in healthcare to ensure the app was accurate and useful.
After Lady Log, I created ACNH Fishing Tracker. This app was a fun project based on my love for the game Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The app helped players keep track of the different fish they could catch in the game. It included information on where and when to find each fish, which was very helpful for players trying to complete their collections. Developing this app was a bit different because it was more about entertainment than utility, but it was equally rewarding to see how much users enjoyed it.
Lastly, I developed Money Master, an app designed to help people see how much money is earned through active income. I wanted to create a tool that made financial management simple and accessible for everyone.

Living with bipolar disorder has profoundly influenced my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. It's a condition that brings extreme highs and lows, but it has taught me resilience, empathy, and a unique perspective on life.
I realized I had bipolar disorder during my senior year of high school. At first, I had no idea why I felt so different from my friends. There were days when I was full of energy, staying up all night to finish homework and feeling like I could conquer the world. But there were some days when I couldn't get out of bed. I felt depressed, empty, and hopeless. Even simple things like brushing my teeth and having food felt impossible.
When I was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder, it felt like my world had turned upside down. I had extreme mood fluctuations that made it difficult to maintain a feeling of routine. However, when I got a better understanding of my situation, I learned that my goals had to be adaptable and realistic. I learned how to set small goals that gave a sense of accomplishment. This helped me build confidence and stay motivated, even in difficult situations. Over time, I've found a love for raising mental health awareness, hoping to help others understand that it is possible to live an enjoyable life, regardless having the disorder.

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) show us a design that is very detailed and often amazes us. From the tiny atom to the most modern computer, we can't deny the order and complexity in the universe. Many people think this shows that a Creator made everything, the heavens and the earth included. For me, believing in a Creator is something very personal, based on what I see and what I have gone through.
I recall a period in my college days when I enrolled in a college biology class. We delved into the DNA structure, the molecule responsible for life's genetic directions. The complexity and efficiency of this molecule amazed me. DNA consists of twin strands twisted into a double helix. Each strand comprises simpler building blocks called nucleotides. These nucleotides act as code letters, and their arrangement decides the genetic directions for creating and sustaining an organism. The idea that a molecule sequence could hold all the data needed to create life was magical to me.
One night, I was alone with my professor in the lab examining DNA strand images through a microscope. The complexity of the DNA filled me with awe. Even a small change in its sequence can cause big changes or dangerous mutations in an organism. But, this complex system allow life to flourish and evolve.
This experience made me think about the bigger picture. From the tiniest particles to the huge galaxies, the universe follows certain rules and principles. These rules are steady and predictable letting us learn about and grasp the world around us. The system we see in nature made me believe there is a planned design to it all. Like a computer or a car comes from human design and engineering, the universe seems to come from an even bigger design.

By the end of high school, I took my professors' advice about taking programming seriously. The satisfaction I got from tutoring and creating was my first clue that I wanted to work in a field where I could use my logic and innovative mentality to better the lives of those around me.

I've been fascinated with computers and electronics for as long as I can remember. As a small child with my first family PC, I longed for a better understanding of computing, which influenced my academic choices as well as other projects outside of school.
My high school teachers constantly pushed me to pursue a STEM major because of how well I did in their class. During that time, I was too young and focused on school to consider any future profession. I was one of the top students, which allowed me to share my expertise by instructing my classmates in my spare time. Besides tutoring, I spent a lot of my free time making things at home. As I grew up, I was naturally drawn to ways for helping my community. In my senior year of high school, interned with an organization called Sunshine State Scholars. Sunshine State Scholars acknowledges students who excel in mathematics and science. They can also meet with officials from Florida's colleges and institutions, learn about STEAM-related programs of study and internships. During the three-day summer course, I learned how to code and launch my own website. I eventually received the opportunity to become an instructor. I taught a three-day introduction to HTML and JAVA to students in their junior year of high school.
One of my biggest opportunities that I received this year was serving as a committee member with the Florida Youth Leadership Academy. We donated bags, school supplies, and hosted a career search day supplies at Orange Technical College. It was an event where new high schoolers could explore different career areas such as Information Technology and Health Science.
Despite major advancements in STEM fields, STEM professionals' demographics remain drastically outdated, with a lack of ethnic and gender diversity. During college and after graduation, I hope to create an after school and mentorship program for underrepresented girls in grades 6–12 who will have exposure and access to STEM fields. I want to establish a team that will offer college preparation, career preparedness, events, advising, and hands-on learning opportunities. I hope that one day, my future students will be able to meet women leaders in STEM-related industries and attend technology tours.
A degree in computer science will enable me to acquire the skills necessary and also teach other girls who want to pursue a STEM career. Navigating this situation as a young teenager was challenging, but it ultimately taught me invaluable life lessons and revealed the strength of our support system.
It started with subtle signs that something was wrong. My mother, who was always full of energy despite her demanding job, became increasingly fatigued. She complained of headaches, leg swelling, and overall fatigue. After multiple doctor appointments and tests, we were finally given the diagnosis: CKD. The news was devastating. My mother's kidney function was extremely low, and she needed to begin therapy right away.
As her condition got worse, she was forced to get dialysis treatments many times each week. This was not only physically draining for her, but also financially and emotionally stressful for both of us. The medical bills and treatment costs were overwhelming. It all started when I was 12, on a summer family trip to Blue Ridge Mountain in North Carolina. My mother had signed us up for a guided hike with a short climbing section. As we approached the rock face, I felt both excited and nervous. I saw the instructor walk easily manoeuvring the rocks, his movements smooth and calculated. I couldn't wait to try it myself, despite the fact that I had never climbed before.
When it was my turn, I put on the climbing gear and helmet, feeling a rush of adrenaline. My first few steps were shaky, but with each one, I gained confidence. I focused on finding the right holds while carefully placing my feet, as the instructor advised. My initial worry transformed into joy as I rose higher. When I reached the top, I glanced down and saw the trail I had conquered. It was a moment of sheer victory and awe, and I knew I'd found something unique.
Back home, I couldn't stop thinking about that climb. I started looking up climbing techniques and watching videos of climbers tackling different climbs. I asked my parents to take me to the local climbing gym back home, and they consented. Walking into the gym for the first time, I was amazed by the walls covered in colored holds, each route presenting a unique challenge.

Art has always been a massive part of my life. I remember drawing on the desks and in random self-help books that I found laying around in the house. I always found myself creating a whole different world using my imagination. Even as a child I strived for the best in my work. Art has helped me in the healing process of myself. When I paint or draw something, only I know its true meaning. Creating art has allowed me to introduce people to my world in different ways. My ultimate goal was for people to be in tune with what I put out there. Entering an undergraduate degree program might be one way to develop my skills. One of my personal goals is to develop practical and creative skills and gain valuable experience in entering exhibitions, and competitions, and build up my portfolio of work. Even when studying a career in STEM, I plan to become a designer and create my own path.
Making art is rewarding and enjoyable. Art can help us have a better knowledge of our world and how we got here. It is the manifestation of an idea through the medium of artwork. I make art to learn about my own creative expressions. For me, making art provides a window into my ideas and emotions. Art takes us to different eras and places. For example, art can provide historical clues. It influences who we are as individuals. I believe art wants us to see what the world is like. It wants people to observe and assess what an image represents.
As a black artist, I use art to encourage social change around the world. I use art to highlight a variety of social concerns, like racial inequity and systemic prejudice, as well as gender discrimination, police brutality, environmental justice, and more. My works shine light on the difficulties confronting the Black community, highlighting perspectives that have previously been ignored. I paint canvases to represent dramatic imagery that violates standard histories and confronts people with harsh reality.
My main mediums are visual art, specifically painting and ceramics. By creating work that addresses social issues, I hope to shed light on important subjects such as racism and systematic inequalities.

A few hours before, I had planned a vacation in Atlanta, Georgia, but instead, I was speeding to the hospital behind an ambulance transporting my mother. As a sixteen-year-old from a single-mother household and seven hours from home, I was devastated by the idea of losing my only parent. My fear changed into action, and I made some of the most courageous decisions of my life. My mother's condition improved after three blood transfusions, but we were still out of state, so I worked with her Florida doctors to arrange for the life-saving emergency surgery. I watched her surgery eagerly awaiting word from her surgeon, but every time I did, I was told there was another issue or delay. I continued to have hope that my mother would live and that I could take on more duties because of my faith and positive attitude. I had looked to my mother for support and strength throughout her prolonged illness, and now I would do the same for her. I took on more responsibility, balancing work, school, and household responsibilities because my mother was always exhausted. I cooked dinner, rode my bike to the grocery store, made numerous trips to the neighborhood pharmacy. It wasn't until it was needed that I realized how mature and resourceful I could be. I became more mature during my mother's health crisis by learning to prioritize the needs of others over my own. I never took anything for granted and utilized my everyday activities as inspiration to keep going even though I was concerned about my mother's health.

Mobile technology is one area of technology that I find inspiring. Everyone has benefited even more from having access to the internet, which we carry around in our pockets. For many, mobile phones have leveled the playing field since they give everyone access to information, wherever in the world, regardless of where they are. We can connect and exchange information thanks to the internet, but mobile technologies go a step further by enabling us to use that information whenever we need it. Whether I make an app or use system features, my personal goal is to make communication and systems easier to use on mobile devices.

Education is very important tool for me to succeed in life and get something different. It helps a lot in lessening the challenges of a difficult life. Knowledge gained throughout the education period enables me to be confident about my life. It opens various doors to opportunities for attaining better prospects in life and encourages career growth. School education plays a great role in my life. The whole education has been divided into three divisions such as primary education, secondary education, and Higher Secondary education. All the divisions of education have their own importance and benefits. Of course, primary education prepares the base which helped throughout life. Secondary education prepared the path for further study. Education makes me strong socially, mentally, and intellectually by increasing my apprehension level, practical skills, and satisfactory position in the job. For me, the home was the first place of education. My mother is the first teacher in my life. In my childhood, I received my first impression of education from my home. My mother let me know almost every day how education is important in my life. The value of education is something that I have understood since a very young age. My mother has just recently finished her A.A. degree at a community college in her early forty’s. College wasn’t something that was engrained in my mother's childhood. She was taught to just “make a living”. Growing up, my mother has always pushed me to get my education and to always be happy with my decisions at the same time. My mother cannot give me everything when it comes to pursuing my education, however, I believe that my talents, dreams, and aspirations can get me to where I want to be. My mother has always supported my efforts, but unfortunately, they cannot afford my college fees. That is why I am taking the initiative of applying for this scholarship. There is no limit to where inspiration can come from. Education makes me more civilized and better educated. It helps me with making a better position in society and achieving my dream job position, which is an architectural engineer. STEM education is essential since it occupies all aspects of our lives. Science is far and wide in the world around us. Technology is constantly penetrating into each part of every individual. Engineering is the important plan of extensions and streets. Mathematics is involved in each occupancy and activity we do in our lives. Each STEM element brings an essential benefaction to a balanced education. Education is a comprehensive view of truth and support to exceed personal interests. In addition, education is not limited to book knowledge, but can also be attained through hands-on experiences outside of the classroom. Education is important in everyone's life. It contributes to the development of opinions, intellect, and character.
