      Byte into STEM Scholarship
I am a junior in college studying for my bachelor’s degree in Digital Media. I picked this path because growing up, I’ve always loved art. Whether it be drawing, painting, or crafting, I have always had a drive to create. Later, I also developed a passion for technology and the endless possibilities it offers to each user. Combining these two disciplines creates the world of digital design and development, which is something that I am really passionate about. Currently, I attend the University of Central Florida (go Knights!). My major focuses on the Web and Interactive Media aspects of Digital Media. I am also minoring in Information Technology (IT). I found this school appealing, not just because it is in my home state, but because of its endless possibilities in the field of technology. UCF has one of the largest campuses in the nation and is recognized for its innovation in many of the STEM disciplines. Particularly, this program caught my eye because it combines two of my favorite disciplines: the arts and, of course, technology. While technology is a passion of mine, it does come with a struggle. A challenge that I am currently facing, and one that is widely recognized, is the underrepresentation of women in technology-driven fields. Upon doing research, it seems that only about 3% of African-American women are represented in tech fields. It is challenging to know that, despite the many technological advancements in our society, people who look like me are still underrepresented in fields such as technology. Personally, in the digital media and technology-related classes I have taken, I am usually one of the only—if not the only—Black female students in the classroom. In order to overcome this challenge, I strive to let it motivate me rather than discourage me. I focus on my passion and personal growth as a woman in tech, regardless of what statistics may suggest about my place in the field. If I cannot find a path to follow, I am determined to create one of my own. In the future, I hope to find a stable, full-time job in the field of my choosing. Currently, I am exploring career fields in web development, app development, marketing, and other forms of design. I am still deciding on a definite path, but I know this is a field that I truly want to work in. In five years, I would also want to give back to the community by volunteering my passions to other organizations. I currently volunteer at my church in the media & technology department, and I see myself playing a bigger role in the future. Lastly, I see myself continuing my education in a master’s or doctoral degree of some kind. I want to keep learning new things about these emerging fields. While I have goals for my uncertain future, all I know for sure is that I want to make an impact, shatter barriers, and make something of myself that everyone will be inspired by.
