There were days I showed up to school hungry, hiding the fact that bills were unpaid and life was heavy. I learned to carry my struggles quietly, but they became the reason I push forward. My life goal is to become a nurse not just to earn a degree, but to give others the care and compassion I once needed. I am most passionate about helping people in their most vulnerable moments, because I know what it feels like to be there. I believe I am a strong candidate because I bring grit, resilience, and a heart that refuses to give up. Supporting my education means giving me the chance to turn my pain into purpose and pour it back into every patient I will one day serve.

My name is Artel January. I am 29 years old and pursing a career in nursing. I aspire to be a nurse practitioner. But I am currently in the LPN program. I want to incorporate , “human touch” which means compassion, connection, and presence. It is more than physical contact it is showing someone that they matter, that they are seen, and that they are not alone. In nursing, the human touch can be as simple as holding a patient’s hand, offering a genuine smile, or sitting with them in silence when words are not enough. These small gestures may seem insignificant, but they carry incredible weight. They bring dignity, comfort, and hope during some of life’s most vulnerable moments. I understand the power of human touch because I have lived through times when I felt invisible. There were days I showed up to school hungry, exhausted, and struggling, and yet no one around me knew. Those were the moments when the smallest kindness made the biggest difference. A teacher noticing I was off, a friend offering encouragement, or a stranger showing empathy those simple acts of care reminded me that I wasn’t completely alone. That is the kind of impact I want to bring to my patients. In healthcare, patients often feel powerless. They may be overwhelmed, in pain, or afraid of what lies ahead. The science of nursing can treat their illness, but the human touch helps heal their spirit. It can turn fear into trust, loneliness into comfort, and despair into hope. As a future nurse, my goal is to carry this philosophy into every interaction I have. I want to make sure that each patient I care for feels respected, valued, and heard. I want them to know that even in their hardest moments, someone truly cares. Human touch is what transforms nursing from a job into a calling. It is the bridge between medicine and healing, and it is the reason I feel so strongly about this profession. My life experiences have taught me that even the smallest act of compassion can change someone’s life, and I am determined to be that kind of nurse. I want to allocate and make a difference in people lives. Nursing isn’t just a job to me it’s a calling. My baby brother was born sickly. He has a two holes in his heart and a leaking valve. He had to go through so much. I want to be that person who encouraged us during those hard times

There were times I walked into school hungry, pretending everything was fine while quietly carrying the weight of unpaid bills and personal struggles. I learned to keep moving forward, even when life felt unbearable. Those silent struggles shaped me in ways I could never have imagined. They taught me resilience, compassion, and the understanding that so many people suffer quietly behind a brave face. My inspiration for pursuing nursing comes from those experiences. I know what it feels like to be vulnerable and to wish that someone would see beyond the surface. Nursing, for me, is not just a career—it is a calling to stand beside people in their most difficult moments. I want to be the kind of nurse who not only treats illness but also sees the person behind it. When a patient feels scared, I want to reassure them. When a family feels overwhelmed, I want to be the one who brings calm and strength. I want to use my own experiences of hardship to connect with others, reminding them that they are not alone. Every challenge I’ve facedwalking into classrooms hungry, worrying about whether the lights would stay on, studying through exhaustion has fueled my determination to succeed. These moments could have broken me, but instead they lit a fire in me to build something better. I believe I will succeed in nursing because of my grit, empathy, and refusal to give up. My little brother was born with one leaking valves and two holes in his heart. He was born with one ear and had to be fed through a peg tube. All I wanted to do was help take care of him. So I went and received my cna license. From there the passion for helping people stayed with me! Nursing isn’t just a job it’s A calling. Even when the doctors said my brother wasn’t going to be able to make pass 12 years of age. Faith and our dedication to him said otherwise. His birthday is today and he’s turning 18! He motivated me to become better and do better and that’s exactly what Im trying to do. I’m current enrolled in nursing program. Although I made the decision to embark on this journey! I knew it would not be an easy task. There were times I walked into school hungry, pretending everything was fine while quietly carrying the weight of unpaid bills and personal struggles.
