As a Black woman from the inner city of Philadelphia, I’ve witnessed firsthand how mental health disparities affect low-income communities, especially communities of color. The lack of accessible mental health care is not just a statistic to me; it’s a reality I’ve seen lived out in friends, neighbors, and family members. This lived experience is what led me to pursue a degree in Public Health at Western Governors University.
I chose public health because it encompasses the too often-overlooked sectors of health care, including mental health, addiction, and the systemic inequities that make care inaccessible. My goal is to work with state and local health departments to design and implement programs that make mental health care affordable, culturally competent, and easy to access; especially in underserved communities like the one I grew up in.
One of my core commitments is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness in BIPOC communities by creating safe spaces for dialogue, education, and peer-led support. I also want to help build partnerships between public health systems and local organizations to expand access to free or low-cost services, including therapy, crisis intervention, and preventative education.
I believe my unique contribution lies in my ability to bridge lived experience with professional training. I understand the barriers, but I also see the solutions. I am committed to being part of the change, making sure that every person, regardless of background or zip code, has an equal opportunity to thrive mentally, emotionally, and physically.
