The most exciting academic area of study which is inviting me to participate and become a valuable member is the field of science. The amazing advances made by the medical pioneers in the last century give me hope to carry on their work and create new healing techniques on their shoulders. Scientific achievements help us understand from the microscopic bacteria to the giant planets of the universe. The medical field is where my heart belongs because it gives me the ability to help others lead a long, healthy and productive life, which to me is the ultimate goal of mankind. History has been a witness in showing us that with modern medicine and constantly new developments in technologies, we have a much healthier population compared to the previous generations. My first exposure to the field of medicine was the Red Cross. They have come to my school multiple times during the year to do blood drives. As a high school student, we were required to help by setting up the area for the blood drive, and making sure the entire school was aware of their services. As a member of the Red Cross Club at my high school, I have learned the value of blood and organ donations and how many lives each individual can save. Khalsa Aid is another influential exposure through the Sikh Temple. It is a worldwide organization which supports the victims of natural disasters and civil disputes. They provide not only food, but services such as social, psychological, spiritual and financial support. Their humanitarian work has inspired me to work with any human regardless of religion or background. It promotes my belief that doctors should use their craft for the betterment of humanity. Doctors Without Borders is my most influential humanitarian project. As a future physician, being a part of such a great organization would be my ultimate goal, as they are committed to impartial medical ethics and provide help in every corner of the world. My personal experience with doctors from this program was in India, while they were working to provide services for children with polio. My personal intent is to become a helper. I learned about “helpers” from the very famous Mr. Fred Rogers, from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. He spoke about the people who always help during a time of emergency or disaster. These individuals represented hope in our society and I would like to be that hope for others. My father is a taxi driver and during the Covid-19 pandemic, he lost his job. We had to depend on food pantries, and the help of family during a very unstable time. My family has always lived below our means and try to save as much money as possible. But during this period of unemployment, my family had to use their savings to stay afloat. I would notice that my father was constantly worried, and it bothered him to ask for help because he was raised to be a responsible head of the household. During this time, we learned to ration our food and only buy the necessities. The most positive thing that could come out of this time period was that we ate less junk food and cooked more at home and learned to value the company of each other. So by receiving this opportunity, it will take some financial burden off of my family, and it will provide me the ability to gain a higher education in the medical field.

Punjabi was the language I was taught growing up, even before I went to school and learned English. Being bilingual can be a challenge because sometimes I will switch from speaking Punjabi to speaking English without even realizing, and those I am speaking to act surprised and confused. One benefit of being bilingual is that I have the ability to connect those who only speak Punjabi to those who only speak English.
Studying biology at any prestigious and respected college or university, will start my journey into the great field of medicine. It will allow my generation to collaborate and integrate to find cures and create ways for pain management for our citizens. Besides the preparedness, college gives its students a highly valued education, the world leaders who are the alumni of different colleges have shown us the ability to speak on the global stage and represent the citizens of their country by creating diplomatic relationships. College traditions and academic rigor is what makes it a great choice for furthering my education.

I hope to become more sympathetic, as one of my most meaningful activities was volunteering. I was part of the Summer Youth Program and worked as the assistant to the Business Improvement Director (BID). The purpose of BID was to work with businesses which included mental health clinics, rehabilitation programs, medical assistance and overall community outreach initiatives to improve and build relationships. During the service, I was able to create meaningful relationships with business owners who work with low income individuals and families in the area. The program was extremely beneficial, as I had to become sensitive to the needs of others because I saw many individuals who were homeless and had special needs. I began to feel the need to change our society where those without homes did not fear or felt judged so they could get the help they needed to become productive members of our community. There were many families on the streets with young children and multiple individuals who faced addiction and lacked supportive families.
This has left a lasting impression on me as I consider myself lucky enough to be applying for colleges and looking towards my future. I wholeheartedly have learned to respect my parents who work multiple jobs and shifts to give me a stable home and a secure future. Volunteering is a family virtue in a traditional Indian household where I was raised by my grandmother as she dedicated her life to taking care of her own family and then her grandkids. She is currently diagnosed with Dementia. The volunteer work has raised my self awareness of how important family and community support is. As a highschool senior, while I study for my school work, I have become the caretaker of my grandma while my parents work. I have learned to create a routine which includes activities and quiet times in the day for her. I want to help her feel secure so I keep familiar objects and photo albums around the house. I try to share stories with her and make her laugh to remind her who we are and want her to feel as a respected member of the household. I engage in finding activities we can enjoy together, and help her do things which make her happy. I help her paint, do her makeup, and put on old Indian movies which she likes to watch.
Through my service as a volunteer, I have learned the beauty of sharing my time to benefit my community. It has become a privilege to care for my family and others, whether it be volunteering in the community or sharing household duties. As I am learning more about my self worth, I get more satisfaction and a great deal of growth by being dedicated to those who might depend on me in their time of need.

My grandmother has taken care of my brother and me since birth but age has had its effect on her. She is currently diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Since both my parents work different shifts, it is my responsibility to take care of her while I study for school. The spices of my culture are now showing their aroma and beauty as I learn the value of my heritage, which helps me interpret and understand other cultures as well as my own.
Studying biology at the prestigious and respected Macaulay Honors Program, will start my journey into the great field of medicine. It will allow my generation to collaborate and integrate to find cures and create ways for pain management for our citizens. Besides the preparedness, CUNY gives its students a highly valued education, the world leaders who are the alumni of Macaulay Honors and the CUNY Colleges have shown us the ability to speak on the global stage and represent the citizens of their country by creating diplomatic relationships. Macaulay Honors Program and CUNY’s traditions and academic rigor is what makes it a great choice for furthering my education.

My grandmother has taken care of my brother and me since birth but age has had its effect on her. She is currently diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Since both my parents work different shifts, it is my responsibility to take care of her while I study for school. I usually create a routine which includes quiet times and activities in the day for her. I want to help her feel secure and keep familiar objects and photos around the house. I try to share stories with her to remind her who we are if she doesn't remember and encourage conversation with my family by having two-way conversations for as long as possible. I engage in finding activities we can enjoy together, and help her do things which make her happy. I can help her paint, do her makeup, or put on old Indian movies which she likes to watch. Many times I try to take care of myself as well, by listening to music.
By receiving this scholarship, it will provide me with the opportunity of continuing my education. I would like to join the medical profession, and be able to provide help necessary to those who need it.
Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
Growing up in the Big Apple also known as New York City, Starbucks is iconic as the Empire State Building or the middle of Times Square. Even after being a winter child, it is the fall season that brings the child out in my heart. The autumn warmth and colors bring out the unquestionably delicious Apple Crisp Macchiato. The smell of the apple and the hot macchiato bring out the beauty of New York City and connect it to the Hudson Valley. Having traveled to Canada from through the Hudson Valley during the fall is going into a world where the enchanting beauty can not be described only enjoyed and felt with one's heart and forever locked with childhood fondness.
The Apple Crisp Macchiato can be the happiness on a child’s face while they are picking delicious apples from the tree while biting into one and juice running down their chin. This drink is welcomed by my soul and taste buds every year with excitement and intoxicating addiction. Waiting for it to be hand crafted and then the barista calling my name while smelling other espresso drinks and watching people take quick sips of their drinks is a treat that the Apple Crisp Macchiato brings with it every fall.
The color of the autumn leaves reminds me of the Macchiato. Looking outside and seeing all the leaves turn brown reminds me of the color of the drink. It also reminds me that winter will be coming soon and all those leaves will be covered by snow. Drinking the hot cinnamon and apple sugar on a cold day will warm anyone up, and the coffee will provide enough energy to navigate through the day. Whenever there is a feeling of sadness around, the Macchiato allows for a pick-me up. This pick-me up again stems from the flavors of cinnamon and apple, that warm you up from the inside out. Besides giving you energy, the coffee adds a bitter flavor to the otherwise sweet drink, making it the perfect balance of sweet and bitter. The milk that is used also significantly strengthens the taste of the drink. If you use a milk that is too sweet, then the drink will be too sweet and not as relaxing. Drinking the Apple Crisp Macchiato gives nothing but fond and warm memories, and if anyone else were to enjoy it, they would also create fond and enjoyable memories.
