Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
From an early age, I have been drawn to the idea of service, healing, and advocacy. Nursing, to me, represents the perfect intersection of compassion, intelligence, and action. My decision to pursue nursing is not just a career choice but a calling shaped by my life experiences, my family, and my vision for the future. Becoming a nurse allows me to use my skills to directly impact lives, while also advocating for equity and education in communities like my own.
My inspiration for nursing began with my grandmother, who worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She modeled compassion and discipline, instilling in me the importance of health and preventive care. She emphasized healthy eating and wellness long before I fully understood their impact, and she showed me the difference that even small interventions can make in improving someone’s life. Later, my personal journey solidified this calling. I watched my sister battle epilepsy and schizoaffective disorder, which gave me insight into the struggles families face when navigating chronic conditions. I also endured my own health challenges, including an ectopic pregnancy, which reminded me of the vulnerability patients feel when they are unsure of what is happening to their bodies. These moments opened my eyes to the critical need for compassionate providers who not only treat illness but also listen, educate, and empower.
My professional experience has further shaped my path. Working as a TMS technician in a mental health clinic, I saw firsthand how depression could be transformed into hope with proper treatment and support. That role reinforced my belief that healthcare extends beyond medicine; it includes emotional care, advocacy, and patience. These experiences have deepened my resolve to become a nurse practitioner who can address both physical and mental health with empathy and expertise.
As a nurse, I plan to contribute to my community in several key ways. First, I aim to serve underserved populations who often face barriers to care, such as financial hardship, lack of insurance, or limited healthcare infrastructure. I believe that quality healthcare is a basic human right, and I want to ensure that people in my community, as well as globally, receive equitable care regardless of their background. Second, I am committed to health education and prevention. Chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity disproportionately affect the communities I belong to, yet many of these conditions can be prevented with the right knowledge and support. By teaching individuals about healthy lifestyles, nutrition, and self-care, I hope to reduce preventable disease and empower families to live healthier lives.
Ultimately, my dream is to pair my nursing career with humanitarian work, establishing a nonprofit organization named after my grandmother, Margaret Ann. Through this endeavor, I plan to extend care and resources to underserved populations both locally and abroad. My journey has been marked by perseverance through obstacles, including financial hardship and even homelessness with my young daughter, but these challenges have only strengthened my commitment. Nursing is my way of turning adversity into purpose, serving others with compassion, and showing children who look like me that their dreams, too, are possible.

My decision to pursue nursing has been deeply shaped by my life experiences and the values instilled in me from an early age. My grandmother, who worked as an LPN, was a powerful role model who emphasized the importance of health, wellness, and preventive care. She taught me about healthy eating habits and showed me the impact that even small lifestyle changes can have on long-term health. Growing up, I also became aware of how disproportionately certain diseases and conditions affect the communities I belong to. These early lessons and observations sparked my desire to become a nurse, where I can combine both skill and compassion to serve others.
My personal and family health experiences further strengthened this calling. Watching my sister navigate epilepsy and schizoaffective disorder opened my eyes to the need for greater advocacy, empathy, and accessible care for individuals and families facing such challenges. My own experience with an ectopic pregnancy gave me a firsthand understanding of the physical and emotional toll that health crises can bring. These experiences motivated me to bridge the gap in healthcare by ensuring that people who look like me and others in underserved communities have access to accurate information and compassionate care. Ultimately, I see nursing not just as a profession, but as a way to fulfill my mission of serving humanity, both locally and globally, because healthcare is a basic human right.
I also recognize that nursing is about more than treating illness; it is about empowering people to live healthier lives and creating trust within communities that often feel overlooked by the healthcare system. Many individuals in underserved populations struggle not only with access to medical care but also with education and resources. My goal as a nurse is to help break down these barriers by providing knowledge in a way that is compassionate, culturally sensitive, and easy to understand. I want to be the person who sits with a patient, listens to their fears, and reminds them that they are not alone. By combining education with empathy, I can equip people with the tools they need to take control of their health and enhance their quality of life.
Furthermore, my long-term goal is to expand my nursing career into humanitarian work, traveling to underdeveloped countries where access to basic healthcare is not guaranteed. I feel a strong responsibility to utilize my skills to help those who would otherwise go without care because I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life, regardless of their circumstances. My journey has taught me perseverance, compassion, and the value of service. With these guiding principles, I intend to become the type of nurse who not only treats patients but also inspires hope, advocates for equity, and works to create lasting change in the world.
Phoebes in Philanthropy Scholarship
In 2018, while working a job that would later change my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined, I met a friend who became like family or what you would call my Phoebe. Her name is Ebonie, and she has been one of my greatest sources of strength through some of the darkest moments of my life. When I was faced with homelessness with my daughter, I felt completely defeated and unsure of how I would find the strength to keep going. There were nights where I wanted to give up entirely, overcome with fear, self-doubt, and exhaustion. But it was Ebonie who stood beside me, offering not only her home but her unwavering encouragement and love. She listened patiently as I cried, as I questioned myself, and as I doubted my ability to create a better future. More than just listening, she reminded me of my resilience, praying with me and for me, speaking life into me at a time when I could not find it within myself. She also took the extra step of connecting me with individuals who could provide guidance and resources, helping me see opportunities where I thought none existed. Without her presence, support, and faith, I truly believe I would have given up a long time ago. Her friendship has been a lifeline, grounding me in moments of despair and reminding me that I am never alone.
Because of the profound impact Ebonie has had on my life, I am deeply committed to paying it forward. I know firsthand how important it is to have someone who not only believes in you but also walks alongside you when you feel like you cannot take another step. I plan to use my personal experiences and the lessons I’ve gained to uplift others, particularly single mothers who, like me, are striving to create better lives for themselves and their children. My goal is to be the kind of listening ear that Ebonie was for me, to offer words of encouragement when hope feels distant, and to remind others that no matter how difficult the present may seem, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Through my career in nursing and beyond, I will continue to advocate, motivate, and support those who feel unseen and unheard. Just as Ebonie’s compassion and generosity helped me find my way, I want to be that same source of hope and strength for others positively impacting their lives in ways that ripple far beyond the moment of need.
Arthur and Elana Panos Scholarship
Throughout my life, God has been my source of strength, guidance, and perseverance. There have been countless moments when I felt lost, overwhelmed, and unsure of what my future held. I have experienced hardships that left me feeling like giving up, moments of darkness where I questioned my purpose, and times when I could not see a way forward. But through it all, God has never abandoned me. His presence in my life has given me the strength to push forward, recognize my worth, and trust that I am capable of achieving my dreams through faith and hard work.
There were times when I felt like I had reached my breaking point. Losing my job, being evicted, experiencing homelessness with my daughter, and struggling with my mental health made me feel as though my dreams were slipping away. I wondered if I would ever have the stability and success I longed for. In those moments of despair, it was God who reminded me of my perseverance, my ability to rise above any obstacle and keep moving forward. Instead of allowing my struggles to define me, I turned to prayer and asked God for clarity and strength. He reminded me that I was not alone and that my struggles were part of my journey, shaping me into the person I needed to become.
Through my faith, I found the courage to return to school and pursue my passion for nursing. I have always had a heart for helping others, but I now see that God has been guiding me toward this career all along. Every challenge I have faced has deepened my compassion for those who are struggling. I know that my purpose is to be a healer, a source of comfort, and a reflection of God's love for those in need. Nursing is more than just a job to me, it is my calling, a way for me to serve others and fulfill God's work on earth.
God has shown me that my life's purpose is to use my intelligence, kindness, and strength to care for others, especially those who feel lost and alone. Whether it is holding the hand of a frightened patient, offering words of encouragement to a struggling family, or advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves, I will strive to be a vessel of God's love and support. Through nursing, I can show people that they are valued, that they are not alone, and that healing is possible, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well.
As I continue on this journey, I know that God will be with me every step of the way. When I face difficulties in my career, when the emotional weight of caring for others feels heavy, or when I doubt myself, I will lean on my faith. I will trust that God has placed me in this position for a reason and that He will equip me with everything I need to make a difference. My perseverance, my dedication, and my faith will allow me to not only achieve my dreams but to help others find hope and healing in their own lives.

My indirect, personal experience with cancer has shaped my perspective on caregiving and the impact of cancer. Over the years, I have had the privilege of witnessing my close friend take care of her father, who has been battling stage 4 prostate cancer. Watching her navigate the complexities of his care, from managing his medical needs to offering emotional support, has profoundly impacted me. It highlighted not only the physical toll cancer takes on a person but also the emotional and psychological challenges faced by both patients and their families.
This experience has fueled my desire to work with cancer patients, as I've seen firsthand the importance of compassionate care, not just in terms of medical treatment but in providing emotional and mental support. I want to be someone who can offer that same care and understanding to patients and their families, helping them navigate the difficult journey that cancer brings. I've learned that cancer care isn't only about treating the disease, but about supporting the individual in a holistic way, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and valued during one of the most challenging times in their lives.
One of my biggest dreams is to start a nonprofit organization named after my grandmother, Margaret Ann, a woman who has lived a life dedicated to giving to others. She has been a beacon of hope and love, teaching me the value of compassion, generosity, and service. Her legacy inspires me to create a platform that will provide resources, support, and opportunities to those in need, particularly children and families in underserved communities battling an illness that does not only affect the individual, but their families. Through this nonprofit, I want to make a meaningful difference, just as my grandmother has done throughout her life.
My friend's dedication to her father has inspired me to pursue a career in oncology nursing, where I can make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. I hope to provide the same level of care and empathy that I saw in her and help ease the burdens of patients and their families as they face cancer together.
Nursing is my calling, and I am committed to finishing what I started. I know that once I obtain my degree, I will not only have secured a stable and rewarding career but also the opportunity to touch countless lives through my compassion, knowledge, and dedication.

My educational journey has been a winding road filled with career switches, personal challenges, and moments of inspiration that led me to where I am today. When I first started college at Florida A&M University (FAMU), I had no clear direction on what I wanted to do. Like many first-year students, I felt the pressure of choosing a major without truly knowing what career path would fulfill me. Over time, I changed my major four times--from business to criminal justice to radiology, before finally discovering my true calling in nursing.
The turning point came when a nurse visited our school and spoke about her career. She shared how nursing had given her a sense of purpose, allowing her to make a real difference in people's lives while also providing job stability and personal fulfillment. Her words resonated deeply with me, and for the first time, I felt a strong conviction about what I wanted to do with my life. I realized that nursing would not only give me the job security I needed but would also allow me to use both my intelligence and my good heart to help others in meaningful ways.
I enrolled in a nursing program, eager to pursue my newfound passion. However, financial hardships forced me to make one of the most difficult decisions of my life. Struggling to make ends meet, I had to leave my hometown of Miami and, ultimately, drop out of my nursing program. It was a heartbreaking setback, but I refused to give up on my dreams.
Even during the times when I was not in school, my passion for nursing never faded. Whenever I spoke to my professors or mentors about the profession, I felt inspired and reassured that I was meant to be in this field. Their encouragement kept my dreams alive, reminding me that nursing is not just a career but a calling. One that aligns perfectly with my compassion for others and my desire to make a lasting impact.
Despite the obstacles, I returned to school after having my first child, determined to provide a better future for both of us. Becoming a mother strengthened my resolve to pursue a stable and fulfilling career, one that would allow me to support my family while also making a difference in the world. I knew that nursing was that career.
Now, I am proud to say that I am halfway through my nursing program, with only a few classes remaining to obtain my Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN). Every challenge I have faced has only made me more determined to succeed. My journey has not been easy, but it has taught me resilience, perseverance, and the value of never giving up on one's dreams.
Looking back, I see how each step, every major change, financial struggle, and moment of doubt has shaped me into the person I am today. Nursing is my calling, and I am committed to finishing what I started. I know that once I obtain my degree, I will not only have secured a stable and rewarding career but also the opportunity to touch countless lives through my compassion, knowledge, and dedication.

Mental health has profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Over the years, my personal experiences with mental illness, coupled with my role as a caregiver for my sister who has schizoaffective disorder, have given me a deep understanding of the challenges that individuals and families face when navigating mental health struggles. These experiences have not only influenced my perspective on mental health but have also inspired me to pursue a career as a nurse, specializing in mental health care, with the goal of making a positive impact on others who are facing similar battles.
Having battled my own mental health issues, I understand the emotional, psychological, and physical toll that mental illness can take. My experiences with anxiety and depression have taught me how isolating it can feel to live with a mental health disorder. This personal struggle has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy for others facing mental health challenges. It has also reinforced my belief that mental health is just as important as physical health, and it is essential to treat the whole person--body, mind, and spirit. I now believe that everyone deserves access to mental health care, understanding, and support, and I am dedicated to advocating for those who may not always have a voice in their treatment or care.
Caring for my sister, who has schizoaffective disorder, has further shaped my perspective on mental health. As her primary caregiver, I have witnessed the difficulties that come with managing a severe mental health condition. From coordinating her treatment to providing emotional support, I have gained firsthand experience in the complexities of living with and caring for someone with a mental health disorder. I have learned that those living with mental illness need not only medical care but also a support system that helps them navigate the emotional and practical aspects of their condition.
In addition to my personal experiences, my work as a TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) Technician in a mental health clinic has expanded my understanding of mental health treatment options. In this role, I have worked directly with patients undergoing TMS therapy, a non-invasive treatment for depression and other mental health disorders. Through this experience, I have seen firsthand the positive impact that innovative treatments can have on patients' lives. I have also learned the importance of being a supportive, empathetic presence for individuals who are in the process of healing. Working in the mental health field has solidified my passion for becoming a nurse specializing in mental health and has inspired me to explore how I can contribute to the ongoing development of effective mental health care treatments.
Looking to the future, I plan to use my career as a nurse to make a positive impact on mental health. I aspire to work in settings where I can offer not only clinical expertise but also emotional support and understanding for those experiencing mental health challenges. I hope to become a mental health nurse who advocates for better access to care, fights the stigma surrounding mental illness, and helps create environments where patients feel safe and empowered. Through my career, I aim to educate others about mental health, provide compassionate care, and make a lasting difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health disorders.
Ultimately, my personal journey, my experience as a caregiver, and my work in the mental health field have all influenced my career aspirations. I am committed to using my skills, compassion, and understanding to help others navigate their mental health challenges and make a positive impact on the world.

By promoting awareness and prevention, I hope to reduce the burden of preventable diseases in the communities I serve and improve overall quality of life.
My work as a TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) Technician in a mental health clinic has expanded my understanding of mental health crisis and treatment options. Working in the mental health field has solidified my passion for becoming a nurse advocating for patients in mental health and has inspired me to explore how I can contribute to the ongoing development of effective mental health care treatments.
