My passion for helping my community drives me in this mission. Currently, I serve as the National Honor Society's vice president and an Olympia Snowe Leader. I am also involved in my school’s student council, lend my time as a tutor, and participate in the Empower program, which educates young people about the serious issues of bullying and substance abuse. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to have their full potential recognized. Yet it’s also important to acknowledge that students like myself often have to go above and beyond to prove our abilities and break through expectations shaped by our circumstances. Throughout high school, I have faced challenges that many of my peers could not imagine navigating—let alone while maintaining strong grades and enrolling in the highest-level courses available. Balancing personal obstacles with academic ambition has required resilience, discipline, and determination. For these reasons, I believe that students who overcome hardship while continuing to excel deserve to be considered for scholarships and grants that support their growth and help level the playing field. Having gone through incredibly challenging hardships has shaped who I am and why I work so hard to reach my goals. Right before the summer of my freshman year, my grandfather passed away after living with my family for six months while he became increasingly ill. Only a few months later, I learned that my brother would be imprisoned for 29 years, which changed my entire family dynamic. Shortly after, my parents became foster parents to my half-brother and half-sister—a moment that brought hope, but was rooted in heartbreak, as my biological mother had left them home alone for two nights and three days. During my junior year, my sister’s mental health declined severely, and she began losing control and unintentionally hurting me and other family members. She was in and out of emergency rooms until she was ultimately admitted to residential care in March of 2025. All of this happened while I continued taking the highest-level classes, pushing myself academically, and working toward my long-term goal of pursuing psychology and law. These experiences forced me to grow up quickly, remain resilient, and stay dedicated to my education despite the chaos around me—proving why motivated students from backgrounds like mine deserve opportunities such as scholarships and grants. I am a motivated person who cares deeply about making a difference in my community, and that drive pushes me to do well in everything I take on, even when my personal life feels overwhelming. Being one of the top students in my school has not been easy, but knowing that I am opening new doors for myself and working toward a future I once only imagined makes every challenge worth it. Support through this grant would allow me to continue focusing on my goals without the constant worry of financial barriers. It would help me pursue my studies in psychology and pre-law, participate in meaningful opportunities, and eventually become a lawyer who supports others with fairness and compassion. I have proven that I will persevere, and with this support, I will continue turning my hardships into motivation and my motivation into impact.

I am an actively engaged community member driven by determination, hard work, and a passion for creating a positive impact through my involvement in various executive committees. My role at a local childcare center focuses on the vital mission of keeping children safe and protected. Having seen young children's challenges while navigating the internet, I understand the importance of proper supervision. From a young age, I set clear goals and developed plans to achieve them, which instilled in me the values of being goal-oriented and diligent. One of my most cherished qualities is my deep care for others, and I am dedicated to ensuring that everyone feels included and happy. My peers and teachers recognize me as a leader who honors and amplifies everyone’s voice. I aspire to be a young woman whose voice can help and uplift others during their struggles. At school, I embrace my role as a leader. As the Vice President of the National Honor Society, I leverage my voice to uplift my community. I also co-chair the school’s EMPOWER group, where we engage local schools through puppet shows and skits that spark essential discussions about drugs, bullying, and cyberbullying, as well as the perilous situations students may encounter. After performances, we facilitate discussions to address any questions or comments. Additionally, as an Olympia Snowe Leader, I have effectively honed my ability to articulate my values, voice, and vision over the past three years, enhancing my listening and interpersonal skills through various leadership roles. Since the summer of 2024, I have been part of the YMCA of Greater Waterville. I started as a summer employee and discovered my passion for working with children. This realization motivated me to join the after-school program. Experiencing the realities of some children in unsettling home environments has opened my eyes to the profound difference that spending genuine time with them can make. I strive to provide these kids with a haven and a happy place, ensuring they know I am always here to listen and support them. In my work, I am dedicated to being present in their lives, recognizing that I am a vital source of support for many. Regarding technology, I use my voice to inform parents and children about the importance of playing safe games. A recent game I had to discuss with parents was Roblox. Growing up in a society that revolves around technology, video games, and the internet, I aim to make a difference in my community. My goal is to protect the safety and well-being of the youth in my care by sharing tips and tricks to help parents and families.
Patrick Roberts Scholarship for Aspiring Criminal Justice Professionals
I believe one of the most pressing issues facing the criminal justice system today is the way individuals with mental illnesses are incarcerated with little to no access to proper mental healthcare. Too often, people suffering from severe mental health conditions are placed in prisons instead of receiving the treatment and therapy they desperately need. Instead of being offered compassion, resources, and rehabilitation, they are left to navigate their illnesses in environments that are not designed to address them. This fails to address the root causes of their struggles but also increases the likelihood of recidivism. Without the proper support, many individuals end up cycling in and out of the system, further burdening prisons and preventing them from ever reaching stability in their lives. I plan to pursue law to address this systemic failure in my future career. I want to advocate for and lobby for stronger partnerships between jails, prisons, and mental health clinics. My vision is that every inmate, regardless of their circumstances, has access to consistent therapy, counseling, and support groups while incarcerated. With proper treatment and resources, I believe people leaving incarceration would be far more prepared to reintegrate into society, reducing the chances of reoffending. My long-term goal is to help shift our justice system away from being purely punitive and toward a reformative model—one that heals individuals from within, particularly those struggling with untreated mental health conditions. This change would support individuals and strengthen communities by lowering recidivism and giving people a chance to rebuild their lives. Although I have not yet worked directly with jails or prisons, I have taken every opportunity to advocate for mental health awareness in my daily life. My passion for this issue is deeply personal. Growing up with a biological mother who has bipolar disorder has given me firsthand insight into how devastating untreated mental illness can be. I have seen how hard it is for someone to function when they lack consistent access to resources, therapy, and medication. Watching her struggle has fueled my determination to ensure others in similar positions receive the care they need. I know from personal experience that mental illness does not define a person’s potential—it is the lack of treatment and support that can hold someone back. Beyond my family experience, my work at a childcare center has also shaped how I approach mental health and advocacy. Every day, I prioritize ensuring each child feels seen and heard under my care. When children have a safe space to express themselves and know someone is listening, their behaviors and emotional regulation improve dramatically. I have witnessed the power of simple compassion and consistency in helping prevent escalations. While the children I work with are not incarcerated, this experience has reinforced my belief that early intervention, empathy, and access to support can change lives. These experiences—both personal and professional—have strengthened my commitment to combining mental health advocacy with criminal justice reform. They serve as the foundation for my future legal career, where I hope to make meaningful changes that ensure people struggling with mental illness receive care instead of punishment. By addressing the issue at its root and creating stronger support systems, I believe we can transform the criminal justice system into one that not only holds individuals accountable but also gives them the tools to succeed when they return to society. Ultimately, my goal is to be part of the movement that reimagines justice as not just about consequences but healing, rehabilitation, and second chances.

As a lawyer, my passion lies in advocating for transformative change that truly makes a difference in people's lives. I believe universal health care is essential for ensuring everyone has access to affordable and compassionate mental health care. Through my work with a non-profit organization, I will stand up for individuals facing injustice and discrimination within the mental health system, understanding their unique challenges. I am committed to addressing unfair sentences and to promoting alternatives to incarceration for those struggling with mental health issues, recognizing the deep-rooted complexities of their circumstances. My ultimate goal is to redefine our approach to mental health care, fostering a framework that recognizes mental health as a fundamental human right for all, rather than a privilege that only some can access.
