Good Vibes Only Scholarship in Memory of C. Spoon
As a 24-year-old African American woman and a first-generation college student, I have chosen to pursue a degree in psychology because I believe in the life-altering power of mental health services to break cycles of generational trauma within BIPOC communities. Currently enrolled at Medgar Evers College with a 3.8 GPA, I am committed to understanding the difficulties of mental health and using my education to create a meaningful impact in the mental health community. Generational trauma has deeply affected BIPOC communities. Portrayed as a prevalent unspoken issue that impacts one's mental, spiritual, and economic well-being. In my own life, I have first-hand experienced, how trauma -- when passed down generations -- can hinder self-growth. I have also seen how the fear and anger stemming from such trauma can lead to self-destructive behaviors and how a lack of access to mental health resources intensifies these challenges. Mental health services are essential in helping BIPOC individuals confront and overcome generational trauma. Therapy and counseling can provide safe spaces to explore and address deep-seated pain, which can help with understanding and self-acceptance. In addition to therapy, culturally competent care — handled by professionals who recognize and honor the lived experiences of BIPOC individuals—is an important factor in dismantling the stigma around mental health. When paired with increased access and community education, these services can inspire resilience and allow individuals to break free from cycles of trauma. My ultimate goal is to become a licensed therapist specializing in trauma and family counseling with a focus on underserved BIPOC communities. I envision myself working in communities where mental health resources are scarce. I aspire to establish programs that fuse traditional therapeutic methods with innovative approaches like mindfulness and creative expression, such as art and music therapy. By leveraging these tools, I aim to create safe and supportive environments where individuals can confront their pain, rediscover their strengths, and build healthier futures. This scholarship represents an opportunity to continue my educational journey and contribute to a greater mission of healing generational trauma within BIPOC communities. By selecting me as a candidate for this scholarship, it will enable me to advocate for mental health awareness, address the systemic barriers that prolongs trauma, and create pathways towards a collective well-being. I am deeply grateful for the chance to apply and for the opportunity to align my goals with this scholarship's purpose of fostering resilience and success through mental health.
    Ethan To Scholarship
My name is Arianna Andrews, and I am currently pursuing a degree in Psychology at Medgar Evers College, where I have successfully accumulated a 3.8 GPA. As a first-generation college student from a low-income background, I understand the importance of resilience and determination in overcoming obstacles to achieve one’s goals. My passion for psychology stems from my personal experiences and a deep desire to make a positive impact on others’ mental health and well-being. I chose to pursue a career in psychology because I have witnessed firsthand how mental health challenges can affect individuals and their ability to thrive. Growing up, I saw many loved ones struggle with depression and anxiety without access to support. These experiences curated a curiosity in me about how the mind works and a commitment to becoming a resource for those who don't know where to go for the proper resources. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to heal and grow, and I am dedicated to providing the care and understanding that can make that possible. My ultimate goal is to become a licensed therapist specializing in trauma and family counseling. In the short term, I plan to complete my undergraduate degree with honors and continue my education in a graduate program. Beyond academic achievements, I aim to advocate for accessible mental health resources in underserved communities. My experience with mental health is both personal and professional. On a personal level, I have faced periods of stress and self-doubt, particularly as a first-generation college student. Learning to seek help and prioritize my mental health has been a life-changing journey that has strengthened my motivation to keep going. Professionally, my roles in daycares and after-school programs have given me insights into the importance of emotional support for children and families. These experiences have strengthened my belief that early intervention and consistent guidance can make a significant difference in someone’s life. This scholarship represents more than financial assistance, it is an opportunity to create a world where mental health support is accessible to all. By reducing the financial barriers to my education, this award will enable me to focus more fully on my studies and advocacy efforts. With this support, I will strive to honor Ethan To’s legacy by fostering healing, hope, and empowerment in the lives of others. Thank you for considering my application and for supporting students who are passionate about mental health awareness and change.

As a first-generation African American woman and the daughter of resilient parents, I have always been motivated to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and pursue my dreams. My journey consists of determination, self-discovery, and perseverance. While there have been obstacles along the way, my commitment to education and my desire to uplift others have kept me moving forward. This scholarship represents not just financial assistance, but also an promise of my potential and the possibilities that lie ahead. Growing up, I faced numerous challenges that shaped the person I am today. My family’s limited financial resources meant that I often had to work twice as hard to seize opportunities. Despite these difficulties, I found strength in my heritage and the sacrifices of those who came before me. My parents ingrained in me the importance of education as a gateway to opportunity and a tool for creating positive change. After graduating high school in 2018, I enrolled in college, but I struggled to balance the demands of academics, work, and personal challenges. Ultimately, I made the difficult decision to take a break from college, a choice that weighed heavily on me but also served as a turning point. During this time, I worked in various jobs—from retail to childcare—which deepened my understanding of the importance of empathy, resilience, and adaptability. These experiences also rekindled my passion for learning and my desire to contribute meaningfully to my community. When I returned to college, I chose to major in psychology at Medgar Evers College, recognizing my deep interest in mental health and the role it plays in personal and societal well-being. With a 3.8 GPA, I am proud of the progress I have made and the knowledge I have gained. I want to use my education and experiences to support individuals who are navigating challenges similar to those I have faced. As someone who understands the power of a helping hand, I am committed to being that source of support and encouragement for others. This scholarship would have a huge impact on my journey. It would help alleviate the financial burdens that often accompany pursuing higher education, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and professional development. With this support, I would be better equipped to achieve my goals of completing my undergraduate degree in psychology. Beyond academics, receiving this scholarship would be a reminder that my efforts are recognized and that I am not alone in my pursuit of a better future.
