Ultrafabrics Inc. Scholarship Award
I did not begin my fashion journey in a classroom. I began it in a fabric store.
In 2022, I was accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Fashion Design program, one of the most competitive in the world. But instead of going, I made a choice that changed my life. I met my mentor, Mr. Nasir Mahmud, a retired fabric broker who spent decades sourcing textiles for New York labels before founding Pennie Fabrics, the only apparel fabric store in our part of Florida. I turned down FIT and decided to train under him.
Since then, I have worked as the Lead Fabric Consultant at Pennie Fabrics, sourcing luxury and deadstock fabrics, guiding designers through consultations, and building a hands-on understanding
of sustainable materials. I have worked there since 2022 and continue remotely, even now that I am back in New York as a BFA Fashion Design student at FIT and a design intern at TWP, a luxury womenswear label.
My foundation in fabric sourcing changed the way I think about design. I am not interested in fast trends. I focus on understated, convertible garments made from ethically sourced, environmentally conscious fabrics. I design with longevity, adaptability, and material honesty in mind. Sustainability is not a trend to me. It is how I was trained from the beginning.
This mindset also comes from my personal life. I balance full-time school, internships, and multiple jobs to support my family. My brother is in medical school, and my family has been impacted by the
hurricanes that frequently hit Florida. I have had to work harder than most to make this dream real. It has not been easy, but I use my work ethic to my advantage.
For my submission, I am sharing several design projects that reflect my values. Each is made with natural fabrics and vintage or biodegradable trims. These garments reflect my belief in understated,
modular design, and long-term wear. Every piece is meant to last, adapt, and move with the wearer.
My long-term goal is to become a creative director at a luxury fashion house and help reshape how we approach sustainability in design. I want to create clothing that invites people to consume more intentionally and to buy fewer, better, and more versatile things. Through this work, I aim to design better garments, pieces that reduce waste, extend wear, and lower their environmental footprint without sacrificing beauty or function.
Winning this scholarship would not only support that mission, it would quite literally change life for my family and me. It would lift a weight I have carried quietly for years and give me the space to focus on what matters most: thoughtful experimentation, deeper development, and sustainable innovation. It would allow me to create without fear and keep building work rooted in care and conviction.
