    Empower Her Scholarship
Empowerment, to me, means having the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take control of your life and make decisions that lead to personal and collective growth. It’s about recognizing your own potential, breaking through barriers, and using your strengths to create positive change—not just for yourself, but for others as well. Empowerment is a force that allows individuals to rise above their circumstances and take charge of their futures, no matter how challenging the road may seem. In my life, empowerment has been both a journey and a goal. Growing up as the eldest in a family of 13+ siblings, I had to learn how to empower myself early on. With limited resources and the challenge of being a first-generation college student, I often felt the weight of having to navigate uncharted territories alone. My parents, though supportive in spirit, couldn’t always provide the guidance or financial resources needed to pursue higher education. This pushed me to seek out opportunities to empower myself through hard work, determination, and resourcefulness. One of the most empowering moments in my life was stepping into leadership roles at school and in my community. As the vice president of the student council and a student sports administrator, I discovered my ability to inspire and uplift others while building my own confidence. These positions taught me how to lead by example, communicate effectively, and make decisions that benefit the group as a whole. Empowerment became more than just a personal pursuit; it became a way for me to help others recognize their own potential. For instance, mentoring younger students through programs like Beyond the Baseline with the Detroit Pistons has shown me how small acts of encouragement and guidance can ignite someone else’s journey toward empowerment. Empowerment also means resilience—choosing to push forward despite the odds. When I wasn’t the first or second choice for a wilderness leadership position, I initially felt defeated. However, my mentor advocated for me, and I seized the opportunity to prove myself. By the end of the experience, I had earned the trust and respect of my peers, with many encouraging me to return as a leader. This taught me that empowerment often comes from believing in yourself even when others don’t see your potential right away. In my personal life, empowerment affects how I interact with my family. Being a role model for my younger siblings has been one of my greatest motivations. I want them to see that, regardless of where we come from, they have the power to shape their futures. Pursuing a degree in business management and finance is not just a step toward achieving my dreams; it’s a way to empower my family by breaking the cycle of financial hardship and creating opportunities for future generations. Ultimately, empowerment is the foundation of my drive to succeed and make a difference in the world. It has given me the strength to overcome obstacles, the courage to lead, and the determination to inspire others. Empowerment is not just a feeling; it’s a call to action—one that I strive to answer every day by working toward my goals, helping others discover their potential, and building a future where empowerment is accessible to everyone.

One of the most unique aspects of who I am is my journey as a first-generation college student in a large family with 13+ siblings. Growing up, I often had to learn how to stand out and work for recognition in a household where resources and attention were stretched thin. This experience shaped my drive for success and gave me the resilience to pursue my dreams, despite the obstacles I faced. While many might see a large family as a challenge, I view it as an asset that has taught me teamwork, empathy, and perseverance—qualities that have influenced my personal and professional goals. My motivations for seeking higher education are deeply rooted in my desire to break the cycle of limited opportunities that many in my family have faced. My parents, though hardworking, were unable to attend college, and the financial resources to pursue higher education were not available to me without support. By pursuing a college degree, I hope to not only create a better future for myself but also to be a source of inspiration for my younger siblings. I want them to see that education is a pathway to new opportunities, regardless of the challenges we face as a family. I believe that my accomplishments—both academic and extracurricular—demonstrate my commitment to making a positive impact in my community. I serve as the student sports administrator, vice president of the student council, and senior coordinator for my school’s yearbook. These roles have given me the chance to develop leadership skills and work with others to create meaningful change. Through my involvement with organizations like Embrace Sportz and Beyond the Baseline with the Detroit Pistons, I’ve been able to share my passion for sports and business with young people in underserved communities, helping them build skills in teamwork, leadership, and financial literacy. These experiences have allowed me to serve as a mentor, guiding others through challenges similar to those I’ve faced. What distinguishes me from other applicants is the combination of my unique background, determination, and my commitment to helping others. I’ve worked part-time to help support my family and save for college, all while maintaining a strong academic record and contributing to my community. I understand the value of hard work, and I’ve developed a strong sense of independence and resilience through my experiences. I am committed to using my education to not only build a successful career in business management and finance but also to mentor others, especially those from marginalized communities, showing them that education is an accessible path to success. First-Gen Futures Scholarship
I have chosen to pursue higher education because I see it as the key to unlocking new opportunities for myself and my family. Growing up as the first in my family to navigate the path to college, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges that come with limited resources and access to education. My parents, though hardworking, were unable to attend college, and the support I received growing up was often focused on survival rather than academic success. I’ve always known that education would be my ticket to breaking this cycle, and it is the tool I need to create a better future for myself, my family, and my community. Pursuing higher education means more than just earning a degree—it means the chance to create financial stability, open doors to professional opportunities, and provide the resources that were often out of reach in my upbringing. College is a way to give back to my parents, who have worked tirelessly to provide for me despite the challenges we’ve faced. It’s also a way to set an example for my younger siblings, showing them that higher education is achievable, even if it feels out of reach at first. As a first-generation student, I’ve had to prepare myself for college in unique ways. I didn’t have a roadmap to follow, so I took it upon myself to seek out resources and guidance to help me navigate the process. I joined programs like Trio-Cranbrook Horizons Upward Bound, which provided me with invaluable support, from college preparation workshops to mentorship from those who have walked the path before me. I’ve learned how to manage the complex aspects of applying for colleges, understanding financial aid, and balancing my academic and extracurricular commitments. Beyond academic preparation, I’ve developed important skills that will serve me in college. Balancing school, sports, work, and leadership roles as the student sports administrator and vice president of the student council has taught me time management, organization, and perseverance. These skills have been crucial in helping me juggle my responsibilities and stay focused on my goals. I’ve also learned the importance of resilience and adaptability, qualities that will help me succeed in the face of challenges that may arise during my college journey. Furthermore, I’ve sought out opportunities to build my knowledge and leadership skills outside the classroom. Programs like Beyond the Baseline with the Detroit Pistons and Embrace Sportz have exposed me to real-world applications of business management, finance, and leadership, areas I am passionate about. These experiences have allowed me to gain practical experience while also developing a network of mentors and peers who have supported me in my educational journey. Being a first-generation college student has shaped my perspective on education and success. It has fueled my determination to excel and my commitment to giving back to others who are navigating similar challenges. I am prepared to face the challenges of college with an open mind, a strong work ethic, and the resilience I’ve developed throughout my life. My goal is to not only succeed academically but to use my education to make a meaningful impact on my community and beyond, showing others that, regardless of background or circumstance, higher education is a pathway to success.

One of the biggest obstacles was feeling unseen and overlooked, which made me realize early on that I had to fight for my place and recognition. In a household where resources and attention were spread thin, I became fiercely independent, learning to manage my time and responsibilities effectively. Balancing schoolwork, sports, jobs, and leadership roles taught me resilience and determination. I had to push myself to succeed despite feeling invisible at times. Financial struggles have also been a major part of my life. My parents, though hardworking, have not been able to provide the financial support I need for college. This has left me to find ways to cover tuition and other expenses on my own. I have worked part-time jobs to help my family and save for my future, all while maintaining a strong academic record and participating in extracurricular activities. These financial pressures have made me even more determined to pursue a degree in business management and finance, as I believe that education is the key to breaking financial cycles and creating opportunities for my family and community. This scholarship would have a profound impact on my ability to attend college and pursue my goals without the constant worry about financial barriers. It would ease the burden of tuition and living expenses, allowing me to focus on my studies and my career aspirations. Being a first-generation college student has profoundly influenced my career goals and sense of responsibility. Growing up in a large family with 13+ siblings, I’ve seen firsthand the struggles my parents faced, especially when it came to providing educational opportunities. As the first in my family to pursue higher education, I am determined to break the cycle of limited access to resources and create a better future for myself and my family. My career goal is to pursue a degree in business management and finance, where I can build a successful career and give back to my community. I want to show my younger siblings and others in similar situations that higher education is not only attainable but transformative. My experiences as a first-generation student have also driven me to focus on financial literacy. Many families in my community face financial challenges because of a lack of understanding of how to manage money. I want to help bridge that gap by offering resources and mentorship to those who need it most, ensuring that others can make informed decisions to improve their long-term financial well-being. Being a first-generation student has also taught me resilience, independence, and the importance of seeking support. Through programs like Trio-Cranbrook Horizons Upward Bound, I’ve gained valuable skills that will help me succeed in college and beyond. These experiences have motivated me to mentor others who are navigating similar challenges, creating a more supportive environment for future first-generation students. In the end, being a first-generation college student has not only shaped my career goals but has also instilled in me a drive to help others overcome the barriers I’ve faced, making a positive impact on my family and community.

Throughout my life, I have been passionate about making a positive impact on marginalized and underserved populations. Growing up in a large family and being part of a community where opportunities were often limited, I’ve developed a strong sense of empathy and a desire to help others who face similar challenges. My involvement in various projects and activities reflects my commitment to supporting those in need, particularly within underrepresented communities. One self-initiated project that I’m particularly proud of is my work with the local youth sports organization, Embrace Sportz. As a coordinator for this program, I helped create opportunities for young people from underserved neighborhoods to participate in sports and leadership development. Many of the kids in the program come from families that struggle financially and don’t have access to the resources needed to be involved in extracurricular activities. I recognized that sports provide not just physical exercise, but also valuable lessons in teamwork, discipline, and confidence. To make this accessible, I organized fundraisers and partnered with local businesses to cover the costs of equipment, uniforms, and transportation. By providing these kids with the chance to participate in sports, I hoped to instill a sense of belonging and show them that they, too, can achieve their goals, no matter their circumstances. Additionally, I have been involved with Beyond the Baseline with the Detroit Pistons, a program that uses basketball as a platform to teach financial literacy to youth in Detroit. Understanding that financial literacy is a critical skill that can help individuals break the cycle of poverty, I took the initiative to help expand this program by recruiting more participants and working closely with the team to design workshops that were both educational and engaging. This experience gave me the opportunity to combine my passion for sports with my desire to empower young people with the tools to succeed financially. I was also able to mentor participants, helping them develop the skills they need to manage money effectively, which is crucial for their long-term success. On a more personal level, I have worked with my school’s student council to create initiatives that provide resources for students in need. This included organizing donation drives for food, clothing, and school supplies, as well as creating a mentorship program for first-generation students who were struggling with the college application process. Many students at my school come from low-income backgrounds, and I wanted to ensure that they had the support they needed to succeed academically and personally. By creating these programs, I aimed to level the playing field and make sure that every student, regardless of their background, had the chance to succeed. These self-initiated activities have taught me the value of perseverance, leadership, and collaboration. I’ve learned that real change comes from listening to the needs of the community and taking action to address those needs. My experiences have reinforced my desire to continue working with marginalized populations, whether it’s through financial literacy programs, youth development initiatives, or creating more accessible opportunities for those who face barriers. Through these projects, I’ve seen firsthand how empowering others with knowledge, resources, and opportunities can lead to positive, lasting change. As I continue my journey, I am committed to using my education and experiences to serve and uplift underserved communities, creating a more equitable and supportive world for those who need it most.

A college degree will be a pivotal step in shaping my future and the future of my family. As the first person in my family to navigate the path to higher education on my own, it represents not just personal success, but the chance to break generational cycles and create new opportunities for the generations that follow. My passion lies in business and finance, specifically in using my skills to help organizations and individuals manage their resources more effectively. Growing up, I saw firsthand how important it is to have a solid financial foundation. My family’s financial struggles motivated me to pursue a career where I could help others make better financial decisions, whether it’s for a business or for their personal well-being. I’m particularly passionate about promoting financial literacy in underserved communities, as I believe knowledge of finance is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for economic mobility. A college degree will allow me to take my passion to the next level, equipping me with the knowledge to make smarter financial decisions and provide value to organizations and individuals alike. Resilience has been a constant theme in my life, especially growing up in a family of 13+ siblings. It’s easy to feel overlooked in such a busy household, but I’ve used those challenges to fuel my drive and determination. One moment that stands out to me is when I became a wilderness leader—a role I wasn’t originally chosen for but one where I proved my resilience and inspired others. At first, I wasn’t the first or even the second choice for the position. I felt frustrated and doubted whether I was capable, but I refused to let that define me. One of my mentors believed in me and fought for me to have the opportunity. That gave me the push I needed to step up and prove myself. Leading a group in the wilderness required me to stay calm under pressure, adapt to unexpected challenges, and guide others through difficult situations. By the end of the program, I earned the respect of my peers and supervisors. Many praised my leadership and insisted that I return for future roles. That experience taught me that resilience isn’t just about getting through challenges—it’s about showing others what’s possible when you refuse to give up. My resilience doesn’t end there. Balancing academics, sports, extracurricular activities, and work has always been a challenge, but I’ve learned to persevere. As a student sports administrator, vice president of the student council, and senior coordinator for my yearbook, I’ve faced overwhelming schedules and countless responsibilities. Instead of letting the stress break me, I’ve stayed focused, leaned on my time-management skills, and found ways to succeed. These experiences have inspired my peers, showing them that it’s possible to handle challenges and still achieve your goals. One of the most meaningful moments of resilience came within my own family. As the first in my family to navigate the college and scholarship application process on my own, I’ve had to figure out each step by myself. At times, I felt lost and unsure, but I kept pushing forward. My determination to succeed has motivated my younger siblings to start thinking about their own futures. They’ve seen me working hard to create opportunities for myself, and it’s inspired them to set higher goals for themselves, knowing that they, too, can overcome obstacles with effort and persistence. Resilience, for me, is about showing others what’s possible. Whether it’s leading in challenging situations, balancing responsibilities, or breaking barriers in my family, I’ve learned that my ability to stay determined not only helps me succeed but also inspires others to believe in their own potential. I hope to continue inspiring others by showing that resilience and hard work can lead to success, no matter the odds.

By sharing what I’ve learned, I hope to help others take control of their finances, achieve their goals, and build a better future for themselves and their families. My ultimate goal is to inspire others who feel invisible or overlooked, just like I once did. I want to prove that with hard work, determination, and the right tools, anyone can rise above their circumstances and make a difference. College is the first step in this journey, and I’m excited to gain the knowledge and experience I need to turn my dreams into reality. Through accounting, I see the opportunity to make an impact—not just in businesses but also in the lives of people in my community. I’m ready to take on the challenges ahead and create a career that is both meaningful and impactful.
