    Team USA Fan Scholarship
My Favorite Team USA Athlete: Simone Biles As a former gymnast who began tumbling at the age of two, I've witnessed numerous Olympic games and cheered for many extraordinary athletes. However, one star shines brightest in my eyes: Simone Biles, the undisputed GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of gymnastics. Biles embodies the qualities of ambition, drive, and impact that I most admire in an athlete, making her my favorite to cheer for on Team USA. Simone Biles' list of achievements is nothing short of awe-inspiring. With 11 Olympic medals and 30 World Championship medals, she has redefined what's possible in gymnastics. Her innovative skills, like the "Biles" on floor exercise and the "Biles II" on balance beam, have pushed the boundaries of the sport, showcasing her unparalleled ambition and drive to excel. As an African American female athlete, Biles represents more than just athletic excellence. She follows in the footsteps of trailblazers like Dominique Dawes and Gabby Douglas, continuing a legacy of breaking barriers and records. For young gymnasts like myself who are African American, seeing Biles dominate on the world stage is profoundly inspiring. Her success reinforces the belief that with dedication and hard work, we too can achieve our dreams, even reaching the Olympics. However, it was during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics that Biles demonstrated her most significant impact. By withdrawing from multiple events to prioritize her mental health and safety, she sparked a global conversation about athlete well-being. Initially, I was devastated by her decision, but I quickly realized the powerful message she was sending: even the greatest athletes need to take care of their mental health. Biles' courage in Tokyo profoundly affected my journey in gymnastics. Inspired by her example, I began to focus more on my mental well-being in the sport. This led me to take a year-long break from gymnastics - a decision I initially regretted but now recognize as crucial for my overall health and longevity in the sport. Biles taught me that true strength isn't just about physical prowess, but also about knowing when to step back and prioritize self-care. Simone Biles is more than just my favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA; she's a role model who has shaped my perspective on sports, mental health, and personal growth. Her ambition drives her to attempt seemingly impossible feats, her drive pushes her to break records and set new standards, and her impact extends far beyond the gymnastics mat. Biles has shown me that being a champion isn't just about winning medals - it's about using your platform to make a difference and inspire others. That's why I'll always be her biggest fan, cheering her on in every competition and life endeavor.

Picture this: a two-year-old me, tumbling into the world of gymnastics. Fast forward 18 years, and I'm still flipping – but now it's between screens, designing user interfaces that make people's lives easier. Talk about a plot twist, right? Growing up, gymnastics was my whole world. The discipline, precision, and thrill of nailing a perfect routine – it was addictive. I remember my first state championship like it was yesterday. The nerves, the chalk dust in the air, the moment I stuck that landing on the vault – it was electric. That feeling of accomplishment, of pushing my limits, it's something that's stayed with me, even as my path has changed. But there was always this little voice in the back of my head, whispering about art and design yet I'd push it aside. Little did I know, that voice was leading me to a whole new kind of challenge. Then life threw me a curveball. We relocated from Honolulu to Virginia, and suddenly I'm attending a performing arts high school as a visual arts student. The program was like gymnastics for my creativity – challenging, intense, and totally awesome. I was juggling beam routines and keystrokes, and loving every second of it. One project that stood out was when we had to create a visual representation of a social issue. I chose to focus on mental health in sports. Using a mix of drawings and digital manipulation, I created a series of images showing athletes with their "invisible" struggles. It was the first time I realized how powerful visual design could convey complex emotions and ideas. But then? Bam! COVID hits. There I was, a senior, stuck at home, trying to figure out what the heck I was going to do with my life. Gymnastics was off the table and that little voice about art? It wasn't so little anymore. That's when I fell head over heels for UI/UX and graphic design. I mean, have you seen those YouTube videos of people building gorgeous apps and websites? It looked like so much fun, and I thought, "I want in on that!" It was like finding the perfect balance between my love for precision and my itch to create cool stuff. My mom always said, "Find what you love and stick with it." And let me tell you, when I started exploring UI/UX design, it felt like everything clicked. All those years of gymnastics taught me to pay attention to the tiniest details and to keep pushing until everything's just right. Turns out, that's exactly what you need in design too! Now, I'm not the type to fangirl over traditional artists. But show me a slick app interface or a website that just flows? I'm all over it. These digital designers, they're my rock stars. They're out there solving real problems, making technology feel less like, well, techy. Since diving into this world, I've fallen in love with everything from typography to web layouts. It's like solving puzzles, but instead of a finished crossword, you end up with something that makes people's lives easier. How cool is that? That's why I'm going all in on a B.F.A. in UI/UX Design, with a side of Graphic Design. It's the perfect mash-up of everything I love – creativity, problem-solving, and making stuff that matters. I want to be the one designing apps that people can't live without, creating websites that are a joy to use, not a pain in the neck. But I'll be honest – I've got some hurdles to overcome. Creativity doesn't always come easy for me. When I'm staring at a blank Figma canvas, sometimes it feels like I'm facing a balance beam for the first time all over again. Finding inspiration and generating ideas for my UI/UX and graphic design projects can be a real challenge. It's like my brain does a mental somersault, and not always in a good way. That's why one of my big goals is to find what works for me when it comes to sparking that creative fire. I want to develop a process that helps me consistently come up with fresh ideas and find inspiration, even when I'm feeling stuck. Maybe it's creating mood boards, maybe it's people-watching in a busy café, or maybe it's something I haven't even discovered yet. Whatever it is, I'm determined to find my creative groove. Look, I know the tech world moves at lightning speed. But that's what excites me. I want to be right there, in the thick of it, using my designs to make life better, easier, and a bit more beautiful for everyone. So here I am, reaching out to the Gracefully Chosen Foundation. I've got the drive, passion, and trust me, after years of gymnastics, I know a thing or two about perseverance. With your support, I'm ready to take on the design world, one pixel at a time. Just like in gymnastics, I know there will be falls and stumbles along the way. But I also know that with hardwork, dedication, and a little bit of creative flair, I can stick the landing in the world of UI/UX design. I'm ready to push my limits, to challenge myself, and to create designs that not only look good but make a real difference in people's lives. Let's make some digital magic happen! Artist Statement: From Flips to Pixels Art, for me, is a bridge between creativity and functionality. I am a UI/UX and graphic designer, passionate about blending visual aesthetics with practical user experiences. My work is centered on creating designs that are not only visually compelling but also serve a purpose in enhancing user interaction. Inspired by the collaborative and problem-solving aspects of design, I strive to create user-centered designs that simplify and enrich digital experiences. Whether it's through clean typography, intuitive layouts, or vibrant color schemes, my goal is to craft designs that resonate with users on both a functional and emotional level. Through my design process, I aim to make the digital world more accessible, enjoyable, and reflective of the human experience. By focusing on the intersection of beauty and utility, I hope to leave a lasting impact on the way people engage with technology.
Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
My journey has been one of resilience, adaptation, and self-discovery. My name is Rain, and for the majority of my life, I dedicated myself to competitive gymnastics. However, at the age of 18, circumstances beyond my control forced me to bid farewell to the sport I loved dearly. This transition marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life, one defined by adversity, but also by newfound passion and determination. As a "COVID senior," I missed out on opportunities for scouting and advancement in gymnastics, a sport that had been central to my identity. Nevertheless, I refused to let this setback define me. Drawing from my family's history of gaming, I turned to content creation and Twitch streaming as a new outlet for my creativity and competitive spirit. It was a natural transition, as gaming had always been a shared passion within my family. Little did I know, this decision would ignite a fire within me and lead me down an unexpected yet fulfilling path. Embracing content creation and streaming, I embarked on a journey to turn my hobby into a career. Setting ambitious goals became my driving force, propelling me forward even in the face of challenges. My aspirations are clear: to become a full-time streamer and a prominent content creator, and above all, to foster a nurturing and inclusive community within the gaming space. However, my journey has not been without its obstacles. Throughout my life, I have grappled with a learning disorder that has posed significant challenges in academia and communication. This disorder has made it difficult for me to absorb learning material in traditional educational settings and has hindered my ability to articulate thoughts in proper English. Yet, instead of allowing these obstacles to thwart my dreams, I have chosen to confront them head-on. Overcoming adversity has become an integral part of my journey towards achieving my goals. Through perseverance and resilience, I have learned to navigate the complexities of my disorder, finding alternative methods of learning and communication that work best for me. Each obstacle I have faced has served as a catalyst for growth, pushing me to adapt and evolve in pursuit of my dreams. As I continue to navigate the challenges that lie ahead, I am reminded of the strength and determination that have brought me this far. Every setback I encounter only fuels my determination to succeed, driving me closer to realizing my aspirations as a content creator and streamer. More importantly, my experiences have instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and compassion, shaping the kind of community I aspire to build—one founded on acceptance, support, and inclusivity. In conclusion, my journey from competitive gymnast to aspiring content creator has been marked by resilience, determination, and the willingness to embrace change. While adversity has been a constant companion, it has also been a source of strength, shaping me into the person I am today and propelling me towards a future filled with endless possibilities.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
From the shadows of depression emerged a profound journey that sculpted not only my aspirations but also my perceptions of the world and the essence of relationships. As I navigate the corridors of my mind and heart, I realize how my battle with mental health has intricately woven its threads into the fabric of my existence, shaping my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. The specter of depression has been an enduring companion throughout my life, casting its long shadow over my aspirations and relationships. In the depths of despair, suicide once seemed like the only escape from the relentless darkness that enveloped my soul. However, with each passing day, I found the courage to confront my demons and seek solace in the warmth of hope. My journey through the labyrinth of depression has not been without its challenges. Untreated and unrecognized, it insidiously gnawed at the foundation of my being, leaving behind a trail of shattered dreams and fractured relationships. The scars of my past experiences serve as poignant reminders of the battles fought and the resilience gained. In my quest for acceptance and belonging, I found myself grappling with the ever-elusive concept of friendship. The fear of rejection loomed large, compelling me to don masks of conformity and artificiality in a desperate bid to fit in. Yet, despite my best efforts, the walls of isolation remained steadfast, leaving me adrift in a sea of loneliness and despair. As I traversed the tumultuous terrain of adolescence, I realized the futility of seeking validation from external sources. The pursuit of popularity and acceptance proved to be a fruitless endeavor, as I grappled with the harsh realities of human nature. It was amidst the wreckage of broken friendships that I discovered the true meaning of authenticity and self-acceptance. With the passage of time, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and introspection, unraveling the intricacies of my innermost desires and aspirations. As an athlete, setting goals came naturally to me, yet the prospect of charting a course for my future seemed daunting and nebulous. However, through perseverance and determination, I began to carve out a path for myself, guided by the light of my aspirations and fueled by the flames of resilience. My enrollment at the Savannah College of Art and Design marked a pivotal turning point in my journey, offering me a sanctuary of creativity and self-expression amidst the chaos of life. It is here that I found the courage to confront my demons and seek assistance for my mental health struggles. Through counseling and support, I am slowly reclaiming control over my life and forging meaningful connections with others. As I stand on the threshold of a new chapter in my life, I am filled with a sense of optimism and possibility. My experiences with mental health have imbued me with a newfound empathy and understanding for the struggles of others, prompting me to advocate for mental health awareness and destigmatization. In conclusion, my journey through mental health challenges has been a crucible of transformation, shaping my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. Though the shadows of depression may linger, I am emboldened by the resilience gained and the lessons learned along the way. Armed with courage and compassion, I am ready to embrace the future with open arms, knowing that my experiences have endowed me with the strength to weather any storm that may come my way.

Naruto holds a special place in my heart as the anime series I can watch endlessly, transcending the boundaries of time and age. Having been introduced to it at the tender age of 7, Naruto has been a constant companion throughout my formative years and beyond. Its enduring appeal lies in its multifaceted narrative, complex characters, and the profound life lessons woven into its fabric. One of the most captivating aspects of Naruto is its rich and evolving storyline. The series starts with the journey of Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja ostracized by his village due to the sealed Nine-Tailed Fox spirit within him. As Naruto matures, so does the narrative, seamlessly transitioning from his struggles as an outcast to his quest for acknowledgment, and eventually, his role in saving the world. The immersive world-building and the intricate lore of the Naruto universe further contribute to its enduring charm. The Hidden Leaf Village becomes a second home for viewers, and its lore adds depth to the narrative. Whether it's exploring the mysteries of chakra or witnessing epic battles between powerful ninja, the world of Naruto is a vast playground that invites repeated exploration. Lastly, the nostalgia associated with Naruto adds an extra layer of sentimentality. Having grown up with the series, each episode is not just a piece of entertainment but a nostalgic journey back to childhood. Growing up, many of us have cherished memories of playing Nintendo games with friends or family. For me, the quintessential choice for co-op gaming has always been Mario Kart. Its enduring charm lies not only in the exhilarating races but also in the unforgettable moments shared with loved ones. The vivid colors and playful graphics of Mario Kart have a magical ability to transcend age barriers, making it the perfect game for family gatherings. The chaotic races, iconic characters, and whimsical tracks create an atmosphere of joy that is contagious. One can't help but smile as the familiar tune of "Doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo" fills the room, signaling the beginning of another round of racing mayhem. What makes Mario Kart truly special is its accessibility. Even those unfamiliar with video games find themselves easily drawn into the world of Mushroom Kingdom racing. The simplicity of controls ensures that everyone, from grandparents to young children, can participate, fostering a sense of inclusivity that is crucial for a family gaming experience. My favorite multiplayer moment unfolded during a family gathering last summer. Gathered around the television, we embarked on a Grand Prix adventure. Laughter filled the room as we selected our characters – each family member vying for the chance to control their beloved racer. My younger brother, a fan of Mario, eagerly grabbed the controller, while I, loyal to Yoshi, prepared for the race ahead. As the race commenced on the vibrant Rainbow Road, chaos ensued. Shells whizzed through the air, banana peels scattered across the track, and the ever-dreaded blue shell loomed on the horizon. Amidst the frenzy, my grandmother, who had been a mere spectator until then, decided to join the fun. With a mischievous glint in her eye, she picked up a controller and joined the race as Princess Peach. What followed was a hilarious spectacle of intergenerational competition. The dynamic shifted as alliances formed and dissolved within the span of a few laps. My brother and I, initially focused on outdoing each other, found ourselves teaming up against our unsuspecting grandmother. The race became a symphony of laughter, shouts, and playful taunts. In an unexpected turn of events, my grandmother, who had never played Mario Kart before, skillfully dodged obstacles and launched well-timed attacks. Cheers erupted as she crossed the finish line in first place, leaving us in awe of her newfound gaming prowess. That moment, etched in our memories, solidified Mario Kart as our ultimate family co-op game. Mario Kart's enduring appeal lies not just in its gameplay mechanics but in the connections it fosters. It transforms ordinary family gatherings into lively, shared experiences where generations come together to celebrate the simple joy of racing through fantastical worlds. As we reminisce about that memorable summer day, the laughter, camaraderie, and the unexpected triumph of Princess Peach, Mario Kart stands as a testament to the timeless magic of Nintendo's multiplayer masterpiece.

    Your Health Journey Scholarship
For over 16 years, I have been deeply involved in the world of competitive gymnastics, and I can confidently attest to the myriad of health benefits it offers to young participants. Gymnastics is a comprehensive sport that demands physical, mental, and emotional dedication. Engaging in this rigorous discipline from a young age provides young athletes with a unique opportunity to develop not only athletic prowess but also a strong foundation for a healthy lifestyle. This essay delves into the numerous health advantages of participating in gymnastics as a young person. At its core, gymnastics is a sport that emphasizes body control, flexibility, and strength. Young gymnasts are exposed to a wide range of physical activities, such as tumbling, vaulting, bars, and balance beam routines. Through consistent training, they develop exceptional strength in their upper body, core, and lower body muscles. Moreover, gymnasts learn to manipulate their own body weight efficiently, leading to improved balance, coordination, and agility. Gymnastics places a significant emphasis on flexibility by performing stretches and exercises that enhances range of motion. Increased flexibility not only allows us as gymnasts to execute movements with grace but also reduces the risk of injuries in daily life and other physical activities. Yet it is still possible to get injured. While practicing a double backhand spring, I suffered a break to my left ring finger when landing wrong. Young gymnasts are taught to prioritize warm-ups and cooldowns, creating a habit that carries over into adulthood, promoting lifelong injury prevention. While gymnastics is not an aerobic sport in the traditional sense, many aspects of training involve constant movement, leading to an improvement in cardiovascular endurance. Routines, practices, and drills often demand high energy output over prolonged periods, helping young athletes develop a strong heart and lungs. This enhanced cardiovascular fitness can benefit them in other sports and daily activities, promoting overall health. Beyond the physical benefits, gymnastics nurtures mental discipline and focus. To excel in this sport, young athletes must commit to rigorous training schedules and set goals for improvement. The demanding nature of gymnastics instills resilience and perseverance, as gymnasts face challenges and setbacks, teaching them the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving their objectives. These mental attributes transcend the gymnasium, benefiting young individuals in their academic pursuits and personal growth. Participating in competitive gymnastics nurtures a positive body image among young athletes. Gymnasts learn to appreciate their bodies for their strength and capabilities rather than solely for their appearance. The sport celebrates diverse body types and sizes, creating an environment that fosters self-confidence and self-esteem. As young gymnasts master new skills and conquer challenges, they gain a profound sense of accomplishment, empowering them to face life's hurdles with confidence. Gymnastics is not solely an individual sport; it also encompasses team competitions and group training sessions. Young gymnasts learn the value of teamwork, cooperation, and communication, as they collaborate with coaches and teammates to achieve common goals. These social skills prove invaluable throughout their lives, enhancing their ability to build strong relationships and work effectively in various group settings. In conclusion, participating in competitive gymnastics as a young person brings about a host of health benefits that go beyond physical fitness. From fostering mental discipline and focus to promoting self-confidence and positive body image, gymnastics molds young athletes into well-rounded individuals. The sport encourages lifelong habits of maintaining physical fitness, injury prevention, and overall well-being. As a long-time gymnast myself, I can confidently assert that the impact of gymnastics on young athletes' health is profound, setting them on a path towards a lifetime of wellness and success.

I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was 3 years old. Pushing myself a little too hard, I ended up fracturing my finger causing me to be out for a full season. My passion for the sport made me determined to return. At the 2019 VA USA Gymnastics State Championships, I earned the Floor State Champion and ranked 4th All-Around for the state. At the end of the season, my coach gave me one of the biggest awards I’ve received which was the Xcel Diamond MVP award. This award is given to gymnasts that demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship. It meant a lot to know that my hard work paid off even after my setback. I had hoped to finish my final year of gymnastics strong yet COVID canceled the entire season. Without a competitive season, I looked for an alternative that I could participate in. I had always wanted to do a high school sport or join a club and now was my chance. I joined my school’s Esports team and instantly loved it. I was happy when I was told that this year Esports would be offered again but unfortunately, we haven't had any tournaments yet. I'm afraid I won't be able to participate at a college level due to my lack of experience. I have always enjoyed playing video games and even considered pursuing video game design in college. My participation in Esports led me to research other careers in graphic design to include UI/UX design which is now my intended major. It was during my final year in my middle school art class that my 8th-grade art teacher told me about a program that she thought I should consider. As I was set to attend a performing arts high school, I decided to look into the program and the requirements. After days of planning my portfolio and waiting, my teacher told me to stay after class. My gut was telling me she has bad news for me and it was right. She told me that I was not accepted into the program which left me devastated. life and explore other things I liked. I attempted a second time and reapplied to the program. And I got in! At first, I thought my ideal career would be graphic design. Then I was introduced to UI/UX design and my heart knew that was the career I would love to be in. I think going to college is the perfect way to explore that path and learn how to make it into whatever my heart desires. I have applied to multiple schools that have UI/UX and Art Design majors and was accepted into my top choice school. By attending Savannah College of Art and Design, I intend to learn the fundaments of design to build my own business which will include making my own merchandise and digital products. I would like to use Etsy and Fiverr to showcase my designs. My goal is to continue my streaming efforts to ultimately become a full-time Twitch streamer while running my own business.
