Education is what truly saved my life. Since I was born my life isn’t what you think a typical childhood would be. My biological mother was very poor, and my three sisters and I have almost been homeless multiple times. My older sisters were like mothers to me. They wanted more out of life than letting our family situation determine our future. So all of my sisters grew to have a passion for learning. I remember that my oldest sister taught me how to read, and that's when I fell in love with books. I have dyslexia, so it’s harder for me to read and write. That didn’t stop me and I persevered and I’m still persevering! Reading was my lifebuoy in the sea we call life. When I didn’t want to think about the hardships I was going to have to face, I would read to transport my mind to a magical place. When I felt alone reading was my best friend when I felt like I had none. It took me a longer time to read books and understand them but I'm glad I didn't give up. I remember when my life was descending and I felt like I couldn’t read. I was taken into foster care and I felt like books weren’t what I needed. I just wanted my family back and not scattered all around. The books I read as a seven-year-old kid always had a happy ending and I started to resent books because I didn’t see my situation turning around. Something happened to me that changed my whole viewpoint around. I went to the library and saw this older lady knitting, and she called me over to show me. I really got to get to know her and she told me she had a similar story when she was younger. Then she told me something I’ll never for “strive for your education and take your life back”. That’s what I’ve been doing since. Education was a new start for me and in the words of Hunger Games “let the games begin”. At that change of my mindset and situation, I took my education and reigned it in. I fell in love with all subjects not just reading. I feel accomplished to learn and succeed fall down, grow, and blossom into the young lady I am now. I’m not one to have a breakthrough and not do anything about it. My life goal is to write books for kids in foster care and similar situations. So my books can be that person what that old lady was to me. I'm choosing to not let my dyslexia define me anymore!
