    Jerrye Chesnes Memorial Scholarship
Returning to school as a non-traditional student and a mother of five has been both a challenging and rewarding journey. As I pursue my bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership at Cal State Dominguez Hills, I am constantly balancing the responsibilities of raising children, maintaining a household, and working to support my family. These challenges have required resilience, determination, and a clear vision of the future I want for myself and my children. One of the most significant challenges I faced was returning to college after a long hiatus. At age 19, my education was interrupted when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Battling cancer and undergoing surgery and chemotherapy forced me to pause my academic pursuits to focus on my health. Although this detour delayed my goals, it taught me the value of perseverance and strengthened my resolve to complete my education when the time was right. Raising a family while pursuing a degree comes with its own set of obstacles. My children, ranging from a college freshman to a high school freshman, are my greatest motivation but also require substantial time and attention. Managing their educational needs, extracurricular activities, and emotional well-being alongside my coursework demands exceptional time management and prioritization skills. I have learned to plan my days meticulously, ensuring that both my academic and parenting responsibilities are met without compromising the quality of either. Financial constraints are another hurdle I have had to overcome. As a mother, I must prioritize my children’s needs while also funding my education. Returning to school has required sacrifices, such as cutting back on personal expenses and carefully budgeting to cover tuition and other related costs. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to earning my degree because I believe it is an investment in our collective future. Additionally, balancing the demands of work, family, and school can be overwhelming. I years of experience assisting injured employees, a role that requires attention to detail, empathy, and problem-solving. While my job provides financial support, it also requires a significant time commitment. To manage these competing priorities, I have developed a strong support network that includes my spouse, family members, and friends who help ensure my children are cared for while I focus on my studies. Despite these challenges, returning to school has been deeply fulfilling. It has allowed me to set an example for my children, showing them the importance of resilience, hard work, and lifelong learning. They see me working late nights on assignments and attending classes, and I hope this inspires them to pursue their own educational goals with determination and focus. Moreover, completing my bachelor’s degree will enable me to create greater opportunities for my family. It will allow me to advance in my career and achieve financial stability, while also equipping me with the knowledge and skills to contribute more effectively to my community. My education is not just about personal achievement; it is about breaking generational barriers and demonstrating that it is never too late to pursue your dreams. This scholarship would provide much-needed financial support, enabling me to focus on my studies and alleviate some of the stress associated with funding my education. The legacy of Jerrye Chenes supporting parents who work hard to achieve their goals resonates deeply with me. I am committed to honoring that legacy by using my education to uplift my family, inspire others, and contribute to a brighter future for us all.
Frederick and Bernice Beretta Memorial Scholarship
As a non-traditional and first-generation college student, I find myself balancing multiple responsibilities while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership at Cal State Dominguez Hills. My journey is shaped by the challenges of returning to school as a wife, mother, and a full time employee. These challenges have deepened my appreciation for education and strengthened my resolve to succeed. At age 19, my college journey was abruptly interrupted when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I faced a 5-pound tumor, an ovariectomy, and four rounds of chemotherapy. This life-altering experience forced me to leave school and focus on healing. Overcoming cancer taught me resilience, strengthened my faith, and deepened my empathy for others facing adversity. Though this detour delayed my educational goals, it also instilled in me a renewed determination to complete my degree and make a difference in the world. One of my greatest interests is creating opportunities for others to thrive through education. Growing up in a single-parent household, I witnessed my mother work tirelessly to provide for me and my two older brothers. She emphasized the value of education despite never having the opportunity to pursue a degree herself. Her perseverance inspired me to pursue higher education, even as I juggle work and family obligations. This pursuit is not just for my benefit but for my family’s future and the example I set for my children. The path of a first-generation college student is not without its hurdles. Financial constraints, limited academic networks, and the responsibility of providing for a family often weigh heavily. However, these challenges also fuel my determination. I have learned to manage my time effectively, prioritize my goals, and seek support when needed. My children, ranging from a freshman in college to a freshman in high school, see firsthand the importance of perseverance and lifelong learning. By completing my degree, I aim to show them that it is never too late to achieve your dreams. Obtaining a bachelor’s degree will have a transformative impact on my family. Professionally, it will open doors to opportunities that were previously inaccessible, allowing me to advance in my career and provide greater financial stability. Personally, it will fulfill a long-held dream of mine and demonstrate to my children the power of education to change lives. As the first in my family to earn a degree, I hope to break generational barriers and inspire others in my community to pursue their educational goals. This scholarship would alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with pursuing my education, allowing me to focus on achieving my goals. The legacy of Frederick and Bernice Beretta their kindness, resilience, and dedication to others resonates deeply with me. Their example inspires me to leave a legacy success, generosity, kindness and empathy.
    Harry & Mary Sheaffer Scholarship
As a first-generation college student, I have faced challenges that have shaped both my character and my purpose. Growing up in a single-parent household, I watched my mother work tirelessly for 35 years to provide for me and my two older brothers. Her dedication instilled in me a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for education as a tool for empowerment. I am now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership at Cal State Dominguez Hills, determined to build a brighter future for my family and serve my community. Overcoming obstacles has been a recurring theme in my life. At age 19, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Enduring chemotherapy and surgery at such a young age taught me to lean on my faith and find strength in adversity. This experience deepened my empathy for others and fueled my desire to uplift those around me. I believe my unique talents and life experiences enable me to connect with people on a human level, creating spaces for understanding and growth. My professional and entrepreneurial journey reflects my commitment to building a more empathetic and supportive community. I have been working since I was 16 years old and now I work assisting employees with injuries and I have advocated for employees navigating complex systems during difficult times. My role requires compassion, effective communication, and the ability to solve problems in high-pressure situations skills that I bring into every facet of my life. Additionally, as a former small business owner, I operated a beauty supply retail store from 2019 to 2023. During this time, I built relationships with local residents and provided resources to customers in underserved communities, my neighbors and peers. I learned the importance of listening to others’ needs and creating inclusive, safe environments where people feel valued. The challenges I face as a first-generation college student—balancing school, work, and family responsibilities while overcoming financial constraints—fuel my determination to make a difference. I want to demonstrate to my children and others that pursuing higher education is not just a personal achievement but a pathway to creating positive change for future generations. My unique blend of resilience, leadership skills, and passion for serving others equips me to inspire, mentor, and empower individuals in my community and beyond. This scholarship would significantly ease my financial burden, allowing me to focus on completing my degree and furthering my mission. My education will enhance my ability to develop impactful initiatives, advocate for underrepresented voices, and contribute to a more compassionate, understanding global community. I believe that every individual, no matter their background, deserves access to resources, opportunities, and a network of support to thrive. I will continue to learn and use my life experiences to make this vision a reality.
    Team USA Fan Scholarship
When I think of Team USA, no athlete inspires me more than Sha'Carri Richardson. Her story embodies resilience, determination, and individuality, making her not only a phenomenal athlete but also a powerful role model. Watching her journey has been a lesson in perseverance, as she has overcome personal and professional challenges to emerge stronger and more focused, all while staying unapologetically true to herself. Sha'Carri Richardson's rise to prominence as a sprinter is remarkable, particularly because she hails from an underserved community where opportunities to excel in athletics or any field are limited. Despite these challenges, she has risen to compete on the global stage, showcasing her blazing speed and ability to defy the odds. Beyond her athletic feats, what makes Sha'Carri stand out to me is her boldness not just in competition, but in how she expresses herself through her vibrant style, hair, makeup, and nails. Sha'Carri’s colorful hair, dramatic makeup, and eye-catching nails reflect her confidence and individuality. Whether she’s rocking a fiery orange mane or a sleek blonde look, her style is as dynamic as her performances on the track. Her outfits, too, often push the boundaries of traditional athletic wear, exuding a fearless energy that inspires those of us watching from afar. To me, her fashion choices symbolize a refusal to conform to societal expectations. She is showing the world that excellence comes in many forms and that embracing your true self can be a strength, not a weakness. What stands out most about Sha'Carri is her resilience. After personal tragedies and a setback that excluded her from the Tokyo Olympics, many doubted her ability to return. But instead of giving up, she used that moment as a turning point. Her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics was a testament to her growth, maturity, and unshakable commitment to her craft. She secured a silver medal in the women's 100-meter final, and the Gold in the women's 4x100-meter relay team. Sha'Carri’s authenticity makes her even more inspiring. In a world that often demands perfection from athletes, she reminds us that they are humans with struggles, emotions, and triumphs. Her style, hair, and nails are not just aesthetic choices—they’re a celebration of her identity, her roots, and her power. She reminds young women, especially those of us from underserved communities, that it’s okay to shine unapologetically and embrace who we are, even when facing the pressures of the world stage. Her achievements extend beyond the track. Sha'Carri has become a voice for underrepresented communities, using her platform to advocate for inclusivity and empowerment. She has shown young people that their dreams are valid and attainable, no matter their starting point. Her unique self-expression and journey inspire me to be bold in my own pursuits and to never shy away from the challenges I face. As a fan of Team USA, I am proud to cheer for Sha'Carri Richardson not only because of her athletic brilliance but also because of the strength and vibrancy she brings to everything she does. Her ability to rise above adversity while staying true to her unique identity inspires me to carry the same spirit in my own life. Sha'Carri Richardson has taught me that success is not just about breaking records but about breaking barriers. Her resilience, self-expression, and unrelenting pursuit of greatness embody the spirit of Team USA dedication, perseverance, and excellence. She has inspired me to embrace my individuality, work hard, and pursue my dreams with the same boldness and determination.
    Sharon L. Smartt Memorial Scholarship
My name is Amber Osbourne, and I am honored to apply for the Sharon L. Smartt Scholarship. As a first-generation college student pursuing a degree in Organizational Leadership at California State University, Dominguez Hills, I deeply understand the transformative power of education. Like Ms. Smartt, I come from a background where opportunities were not readily available, but through determination and perseverance, I am working to change my life and the trajectory of my family for generations to come. Growing up in a single-parent household, my mother worked tirelessly to support me and my two older brothers. Though she provided love and stability, financial resources were often scarce, and higher education seemed like an unattainable dream. Now, as a 44-year-old mother, I am proud to be pursuing a degree that will allow me to create a brighter future for my children while breaking the cycle of educational barriers in my family. Despite the joy of pursuing my dream, the financial and personal challenges I face are significant. As the primary source of emotional and logistical support for my family, I have had to carefully balance the demands of family life and being a student. My family depends on me for guidance, yet I depend on my faith and unwavering determination to press forward, even when the odds seem overwhelming. Financially, the journey has been equally daunting. The cost of tuition, books, and other academic needs often strains our budget, and I am frequently forced to make sacrifices to ensure that my children’s needs are prioritized. Still, I remain committed to achieving my goal of becoming the first in my family to graduate from college. Returning to school has taught me to value the resilience within myself and the importance of setting an example for my children. Two of my children are already navigating their own academic journeys with the oldest as a college freshman and the youngest as a high school freshman. They see me juggling my studies with the demands of family life, and my hope is that my efforts will inspire them to believe in their own ability to overcome challenges. My degree will not only represent personal triumph but will also stand as proof that persistence and education can open doors, regardless of age or background. The humanities, particularly leadership studies, have always fascinated me because of their ability to connect people and foster growth. Education, to me, is not just about acquiring knowledge but also about gaining the tools to uplift others. My studies are equipping me to better understand organizational structures and community dynamics, which I plan to use to support underserved students and families. Receiving the Sharon L. Smartt Scholarship would be a tremendous blessing. It would alleviate the financial strain of tuition and academic supplies, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies. Beyond that, it would serve as a powerful validation of my journey, reminding me that others believe in my ability to succeed and make a difference. Ms. Smartt’s legacy is one of perseverance, passion, and service, and I am deeply inspired by her story. Like her, I aim to use my education to leave a lasting impact on others, whether by mentoring young people, advocating for educational equity, or fostering a culture of support and encouragement for future generations. Thank you for considering my application. With your support, I am confident that I can overcome the challenges before me, complete my degree, and honor Sharon L. Smartt’s memory by embodying the values we share.
    Kumar Family Scholarship
As a first-generation college student, pursuing higher education has been both a deeply personal mission and a formidable challenge. My name is Amber Osbourne, and I am currently a student at California State University, Dominguez Hills, majoring in Organizational Leadership. At 44 years old, I am on the verge of becoming the first in my family to earn a bachelor’s degree. This journey, though rewarding, has been marked by obstacles that have tested my resilience and determination. Growing up in a single-parent household with two older brothers, I learned the value of perseverance from my mother, who worked tirelessly for over 35 years at a phone company. While her dedication provided for our basic needs, the financial and emotional support needed to navigate higher education was something I had to learn to cultivate on my own. As a Black woman and mother with one child currently in college and another in high school, my goal is not just to achieve academic success but also to inspire my children and community to see education as a pathway to generational change. Returning to school as a non-traditional student has required sacrifices, including balancing my role as a mother and full-time worker. I've worked since I was a teen and I’ve developed problem-solving, analytical, and leadership skills. Despite the demands of my career and family life, I actively engage in community service initiatives that reflect my passion for giving back. For example, I previously operated a beauty supply retail store, providing employment opportunities and mentorship to local youth. Currently, I volunteer with organizations that promote financial literacy for students, a cause close to my heart. This scholarship would provide crucial financial relief to help me manage the costs associated with tuition, books, and other academic expenses. It would also allow me to focus more intently on my studies and entrepreneurial goals, bringing me one step closer to realizing my dream of creating a sustainable support system for students like myself. As someone who has faced both financial and systemic barriers, I understand the weight of this opportunity and the impact it could have not only on my life but also on the lives of others I seek to uplift. Thank you for considering my application. With your support, I am committed to continuing my educational journey and using my degree to advocate for equitable access to education for underserved communities. Your investment in my future would not only change my life but also empower me to be a catalyst for change in the lives of countless others.
    Elizabeth Schalk Memorial Scholarship
Managing my mental health while attending school has been one of the most significant challenges of my academic and personal journey. Living with anxiety disorder and depression has shaped how I experience the world, influencing not only my education but also how I relate to others and approach life’s demands. These challenges often manifest as procrastination and self-doubt, making me question my ability to successfully complete assignments or meet deadlines. At times, I feel overwhelmed by the expectations placed on me, both as a student and in my personal roles as a mother, wife, and professional. Socially, my mental health has made me hesitant to interact with my peers. Instead of embracing opportunities to connect, I have often withdrawn, avoiding situations where I might feel judged or inadequate. This isolation can sometimes perpetuate a cycle of doubt and anxiety, making it even harder to push through my academic responsibilities. Despite these obstacles, I have developed tools and strategies to manage my mental health and stay focused on my goals. The first and most important step has been acknowledging that my mental health requires attention and care. Ignoring it or trying to power through on sheer willpower only exacerbates the problem, so I’ve learned to prioritize wellness as a foundational part of my success. One of my most effective tools is prayer. My faith in Jesus Christ is central to my ability to cope with stress and anxiety. Prayer provides a sense of peace and strength, reminding me that I am not alone in my struggles and that my life has purpose beyond the immediate challenges I face. Leaning on my faith helps me maintain perspective, even during times when my mental health feels particularly burdensome. In addition to prayer, I attend monthly therapy sessions to address my mental health proactively. Therapy has given me the tools to identify and confront negative thought patterns, replacing them with healthier and more productive ways of thinking. These sessions provide a safe space to process my emotions, which helps me feel less overwhelmed and more in control. Through therapy, I’ve learned that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but an act of self-care and empowerment. On a practical level, organization has been a game-changer in managing my mental health alongside my academic responsibilities. I use calendaring and task compartmentalization to structure my time and break large projects into smaller, more manageable steps. For example, instead of focusing on completing an entire research paper at once, I’ll start by creating an outline or gathering resources. By taking one step at a time, I can avoid feeling paralyzed by the enormity of the task. These strategies not only help me academically but also spill over into my personal life. As a mother, wife, and student, I wear many hats, and the pressure to excel in all areas can be intense. By maintaining structure and prioritizing my mental health, I’m better able to show up for my family and myself. Importantly, I also remind myself to celebrate small victories. Whether it’s completing an assignment on time or simply taking a moment to relax and recharge, acknowledging progress keeps me motivated and reinforces the value of perseverance. I’ve learned to extend grace to myself and to understand that it’s okay to have days when I don’t feel at my best. What matters is that I continue to move forward, even if the steps are small. The intersection of mental health, academic performance, and personal life is a delicate balance, but I’ve come to see it as an opportunity for growth and resilience.
    Michele L. Durant Scholarship
Returning to school later in life has been one of the most transformative and courageous decisions I have ever made. As a 44-year-old wife, mother of five, and full-time professional, my life journey has been shaped by resilience, perseverance, and a commitment to growth. Each challenge and triumph along the way has influenced my values and goals, and I am now pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership. My journey toward higher education has been anything but linear. I was attending community college when I received a life-changing diagnosis of ovarian cancer at the age of 19. The sudden onset of treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy, derailed my education plans. However, surviving cancer taught me to prioritize quality over quantity and embrace a life filled with meaningful experiences. After recovering, I focused on doing things that were important to me at the time—having fun, experiencing new things, and starting a family. Those years enriched my life in countless ways and gave me perspective, but I always knew I would return to education to complete what I started. College was not an expectation for me; instead, I was encouraged to find a secure job with good benefits and a pension. I did build a career with the City. However, despite my experience and commitment, I have repeatedly hit barriers to promotion due to not having a college degree. These limitations motivated me to return to school, not only to advance my career but also to set an example for my children and show them that it is never too late to pursue their dreams. As a cancer survivor, I now want to leave a legacy that reflects the lessons I have learned about resilience and purpose. Pursuing my degree is a way to create that legacy not just for myself, but for my children and the community I hope to impact. Balancing the demands of my family while working full-time and attending school is challenging, but I am driven by a vision of the future where my education will open doors for my family and inspire others in my community. My decision to pursue a degree in Organizational Leadership aligns with my career aspirations and my commitment to community service. My goal is to use my education to create initiatives that support underserved populations, particularly in areas of education and financial literacy. I have already begun this journey through my entrepreneurial efforts, including developing ProudlySubscribe, a platform aimed at supporting college students by connecting them with financial and emotional resources from their families and communities. My education will provide the skills and knowledge I need to expand these efforts and bring innovative solutions to systemic challenges. This scholarship will play a crucial role in helping me achieve these goals. As a non-traditional student balancing work, family, and academics, financial support is vital to alleviating the burdens associated with tuition and other educational expenses. The scholarship will allow me to focus more fully on my studies and invest the time and energy required to excel academically. More importantly, it represents a vote of confidence in my ability to achieve my dreams and make a difference in my community. By completing my degree, I hope to inspire others, particularly my children, to view education as a powerful tool for change and a pathway to fulfilling their potential. Returning to school has given me a renewed sense of purpose, and with the support of this scholarship, I am confident in my ability to achieve my goals and make a positive impact.

    Elevate Black Entrepreneurs Scholarship
Talent may be evenly distributed, but opportunity is not—a truth I have witnessed firsthand. As a Black woman, first-generation college student, and entrepreneur, I understand the barriers that prevent talented individuals from accessing the resources and support they need to succeed. This reality has inspired me to build a business that not only challenges these inequities but also empowers others to overcome them. My entrepreneurial journey began with a simple but powerful observation: the lack of financial and emotional support available to college students, particularly those from underserved communities. As someone who returned to college as a non-traditional student while raising children and working full-time, I know how vital support systems are to success. Yet, many students, especially first-generation and BIPOC students, struggle to meet their basic needs, let alone thrive in their academic pursuits. This gap inspired me to create ProudlySubscribe, a digital subscription service designed to bridge this gap and support students in need. ProudlySubscribe connects high school seniors and college students with their friends and family, offering a monthly subscription service to provide consistent financial and emotional support. Built on the belief that education is one of the most powerful tools for generational change, the platform focuses on removing financial barriers that hinder academic achievement. Through this service, supporters can contribute to a student’s daily needs whether for food, toiletries, transportation, or social activities ensuring they can focus on their studies without the stress of unmet basic needs. Beyond financial assistance, the platform fosters a sense of community by strengthening relationships between students and their supporters. The inspiration for ProudlySubscribe comes from my personal experiences and the barriers I’ve faced as a first-generation college student and working mother. Growing up, college was not presented as a requirement but rather an aspiration secondary to securing a stable job with good benefits. While I have built a career, I have encountered barriers to advancement due to not having a degree, despite my years of experience. These limitations underscored for me the critical importance of education and inspired my commitment to creating pathways for others to achieve it. As a cancer survivor, I’ve also learned to value quality over quantity and the importance of living a purposeful life. Facing such a life-altering challenge at the age of nineteen gave me a unique perspective on the fragility of time and the importance of pursuing meaningful goals. I’ve channeled this perspective into building something that will outlive me and continue to benefit others. Entrepreneurship, for me, is not just a personal aspiration but a means to effect systemic change. Black entrepreneurs often bring unique insights and solutions to underserved markets, yet we are underrepresented in the venture capital landscape. With ProudlySubscribe, I aim to address a critical, solvable problem that directly impacts underserved communities. By supporting college students and reducing their financial stress, we can increase graduation rates, empower future leaders, and create a ripple effect of generational impact. I also hope to be an example for my children and my community. It is not enough to tell others to dream big I want to show them that it is possible to overcome systemic barriers and turn a vision into reality. Pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership as a non-traditional student is part of this effort. I want my children to see that learning is a lifelong journey and that education is not just about personal success but about creating opportunities for others. This scholarship represents more than financial assistance; it represents the belief that my idea has the potential to create meaningful change. In pursuit of my degree I am learning that the skills that will enable me to focus on refining the platform, develop strategic partnerships with schools and community organizations, and launching a comprehensive marketing campaign to reach students and their families. Through education and entrepreneurship, I hope to elevate not only my own family but also countless others, proving that when opportunity meets talent, the possibilities are limitless. By building ProudlySubscribe, I am not only creating a business but also contributing to a movement that ensures education becomes a bridge to a brighter future for all.
    Golden State First Gen Scholarship
As a Black, first generation college student, I’ve faced challenges that have shaped my determination to pursue higher education. Growing up in a single parent household, I was not raised with the expectation of attending college. Instead, I was encouraged to find a good job with benefits and a pension, the kind of stability my mother worked tirelessly to provide for our family. Her sacrifices and resilience inspire me daily, and they ultimately motivated me to break barriers and seek a degree not just for myself, but for my children and my community. For many years, I followed the path laid out for me. I secured a career with a municipality, a position that provides financial stability and benefits. However, I soon realized that even with my extensive experience and commitment, I hit brick walls when trying to advance due to not having a degree. These limitations were frustrating and eye opening, as I had the skills and expertise but lacked the credential that often serves as the key to promotion and leadership opportunities. This realization, coupled with my desire to set an example for my children, drove me to pursue higher education as a non-traditional student. It’s one thing to tell my children the importance of education, but it’s another to show them through my actions. I want them to see that learning is a lifelong journey and that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. Balancing my career, family responsibilities, and education has been challenging, but it’s a challenge I embrace because of the example it sets for them and others in my community. Pursuing a degree in Organizational Leadership is a crucial step in achieving my goals. Beyond advancing my career, I aim to create opportunities for others through my entrepreneurial endeavors, with a platform that bridges the gap between students and their families, providing consistent financial and emotional support to help students thrive. My degree will equip me with the tools to expand this venture, ensuring it has a meaningful and lasting impact. Growing up, I wasn’t exposed to conversations about higher education, mentorship, or representation in the workforce. As a result, I’ve had to navigate the complexities of college applications, financial aid, and balancing academics with a full-time career largely on my own. These experiences have made me acutely aware of the barriers first-generation and BIPOC students face. Limited financial resources, the lack of mentors, and systemic inequities make higher education seem unattainable for many. I want to change that narrative by not only earning my degree but by creating initiatives that promote access and equity for others. Representation in education and the workforce matters deeply to me. As a Black woman pursuing a leadership degree, I understand the importance of having diverse voices at decision making tables. I plan to use my education to address systemic inequities in workplaces and communities, mentor young people, and demonstrate that breaking through barriers is possible. Higher education is more than a personal milestone it is a tool for systemic change and generational transformation. My degree will allow me to lead with purpose, inspire others to dream bigger, and create pathways for financial stability and career advancement within my community. This scholarship represents more than financial assistance; it is a recognition of the potential that first-generation students like me hold to effect meaningful change. With this support, I can continue to set an example for my children, uplift my community, and fulfill a vision of equity and representation in education and the workforce.

The decision to pursue a business degree stems from my personal journey and the values instilled in me by life’s challenges and triumphs. Growing up, I witnessed the sacrifices of my father, a Vietnam veteran, whose service to his country and early passing left a profound impact on my perspective. Losing him at a young age made me realize the importance of resilience, independence, and purpose. Surviving ovarian cancer as a teenager further deepened my understanding of life, teaching me the value of quality over quantity and the need to seize every opportunity with intentionality. These experiences have shaped my belief that the key to the life you want is to be your own boss or the Boss, and a business degree provides the tools I need to achieve that vision. My father’s legacy of service and strength continues to inspire me. His role as a soldier reflected dedication and discipline, qualities I strive to emulate in my educational and professional pursuits. While his passing left a void, it also taught me to channel my energy into building a life he would be proud of. His memory motivates me to honor his sacrifices by creating opportunities for myself and others, ensuring that my efforts leave a lasting impact on my family and community. Surviving cancer at the age of 19 was a turning point in my life. The experience gave me a unique lens through which I view the world: one that prioritizes purpose, relationships, and meaningful contributions over fleeting pursuits. It reinforced my belief in the importance of self-reliance and inspired me to seek out ways to empower others. I have come to understand that entrepreneurship is not just about personal success but also about creating opportunities for others to thrive. A business degree is a crucial step toward realizing my entrepreneurial dreams. It will equip me with essential skills in management, finance, and marketing, all of which are vital to running a successful business. My ultimate goal is to create and sustain businesses that not only generate financial success but also contribute to the betterment of my community. Whether through my past experience owning a beauty supply store or my current project, ProudlySubscribe, I am committed to fostering financial literacy, supporting education, and building pathways for generational wealth. ProudlySubscribe, a digital subscription service designed to support college students, is a reflection of my passion for education and empowerment. Through this platform, I aim to bridge the gap between students and their families, making it easier for loved ones to provide consistent financial and emotional support. The tools and knowledge I gain from my business degree will strengthen this venture, allowing me to refine its operations, expand its reach, and maximize its impact. Beyond my entrepreneurial aspirations, I plan to use my education to mentor and uplift others in my community. As a first-generation college student, I understand the challenges of navigating higher education without a clear roadmap. I want to use my experiences to guide others, particularly young people, as they strive to achieve their goals. I hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams and equip them with the resources they need to succeed. In pursuing a business degree, I am not just investing in my future but also in the potential of my community. My father’s legacy, my journey as a cancer survivor, and my vision for entrepreneurship drive me to make a difference. This degree will give me the tools to build a life of purpose and impact, a life that honors my past, celebrates my resilience, and empowers others to dream big.

Losing my father to heart disease was a defining moment in my life. It left a void that no one else could fill and shaped how I approach relationships, resilience, and purpose. My father, Frank Russell, passed away when I was young, and though my mother, a single parent, did a wonderful job raising me and my siblings, I often longed for his presence, especially during pivotal moments in my life. The absence of my father was deeply felt as I navigated childhood and adulthood. I missed out on the unique bond between a father and daughter the encouragement, guidance, and unwavering support he could have provided. I named my son after him, Frank, as a way to honor his memory and keep his legacy alive within our family. Every time I call my son’s name, I feel a connection to my father and the hope that his spirit lives on in my child. One of the most challenging times in my life was when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 19. Facing such a life-threatening illness at a young age was terrifying, and I often thought about how much I would have loved to have my father’s support during that time. While my mother and loved ones were incredible pillars of strength, I wished for my father’s comforting words and his protective presence. I know he would have helped me find strength in moments when I felt defeated, and his encouragement would have meant the world to me. Although I miss my father dearly, I am grateful for the relationship I share with his sister, my aunt, who lives in Texas. She has been a consistent source of love and connection to my father’s memory. Through her stories, I’ve learned more about who he was his humor, his love for his family, and his dreams. These stories keep him alive in my heart, but I still feel the weight of being distant from the rest of his family in Louisiana. Not having a stronger connection with them is a lingering sadness, as I often yearn for more ties to his history and legacy. Despite these challenges, I strive to honor my father through my actions and achievements. His passing has motivated me to work hard and make him proud. I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership, a significant milestone as the first in my family to earn a college degree. This accomplishment is deeply personal because I know how much it would have meant to him. Balancing my education, career, and family life is no easy feat, but the thought of my father cheering me on from above gives me strength to keep going. His death also serves as a reminder of the importance of health and the need to address heart disease within families. Losing him has inspired me to take proactive steps to prioritize my own well-being and educate my children about the importance of living a heart-healthy lifestyle. I want to ensure that my father’s story serves not only as a memory but also as a catalyst for positive change. My father’s absence has been one of the greatest obstacles in my life, but it has also been a source of inspiration. His memory drives me to achieve my goals, nurture my family, and live a life full of purpose. I hope that by living in his honor, I can make him proud and ensure that his story lives on not just through me, but through my children and the lives I touch along the way.

I have always believed that learning is not confined to the classroom, but rather, it is a lifelong journey of discovery, growth, and self-improvement. As someone who embodies the attribute of being a continual learner, I approach life with an open mind and a desire to understand more deeply. My experiences, challenges, and aspirations have shaped my commitment to lifelong learning and fuel my passion for personal and professional growth. One of the most defining moments of my life came when, as a 19-year-old, I faced and overcame ovarian cancer. This life-altering experience taught me resilience and instilled in me a profound appreciation for the gift of life and the power of knowledge. Through my healing journey, I learned to lean on my faith, to empathize with others, and to find strength in adversity. These lessons have stayed with me, motivating me to continually grow and expand my understanding of myself and the world. Professionally, my role in the Workers’ Compensation field, where I’ve built a 15-year career, has been an ongoing education. In this field, laws and procedures evolve constantly, requiring me to stay ahead through certifications and self-study, further demonstrating my commitment to professional growth. Beyond my career, my educational journey is a testament to my dedication to learning. I received my associates’ degree in Communications Studies and am returning as a first-generation college student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership. I am setting an example for my five children, including my oldest, who is a college freshman. Balancing work, family, and academics is challenging, but it underscores my belief that learning never stops and inspires me to pursue knowledge even in the face of obstacles. As an entrepreneur, I have also embraced learning through innovation. From owning a beauty supply store to developing my current venture, I have sought to bridge gaps through creativity and understanding. Throughout the twists and turns of life I am continuing to seek knowledge as every stop has its own curriculum but obtaining this will be the success that sets the standard for generations to come. I embody the spirit of a continual learner by embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and by striving to inspire others through my actions. Time management is a skill I have long admired but recognize as my greatest area for improvement. Balancing the demands of being a full-time worker, a student, a wife, and a mother of five has taught me that while I am adept at handling multiple responsibilities, there is always room for growth in organizing my time effectively. Improving this attribute is critical to achieving my personal, academic, and professional goals, and I have developed a clear plan to enhance my ability to prioritize and manage time. One challenge I face is balancing long-term projects with immediate tasks. For instance, as I work toward completing my bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership at Cal State Dominguez Hills, I must manage assignments while also supporting my children’s academic needs, especially my youngest, a high school freshman, and my oldest, a college freshman. Additionally, my career and my entrepreneurial pursuit require focused, intentional scheduling. To improve, I’ve begun implementing strategies to ensure my time is allocated wisely and effectively. First, I’ve committed to using tools like digital calendars and task management apps to break down large goals into smaller, actionable steps with specific deadlines. These tools not only keep me accountable but also help me identify and allocate time for high-priority tasks. Second, I’ve started practicing time-blocking, dedicating uninterrupted periods to focus on specific areas of my life. For example, I reserve early mornings for academic work, evenings for family, and weekends for entrepreneurial planning. This structured approach reduces overlap and ensures each area receives the attention it deserves. Third, I am working to delegate responsibilities when possible. As someone who naturally wants to manage everything, I’m learning to involve my family in shared tasks, like meal planning or errands, and rely on coworkers and collaborators for professional support. Finally, I’ve committed to protecting time for self-care. As someone deeply invested in others, I’ve learned that personal health and mental clarity are essential for maintaining productivity and focus. By improving my ability to prioritize and manage time, I hope to set a strong example for my children and establish a solid foundation for future success. This commitment to growth not only benefits me but also empowers the community I seek to inspire and serve.
    Mental Health Scholarship for Women
In addition to prayer, I attend monthly therapy sessions to address my mental health proactively. Therapy has given me the tools to identify and confront negative thought patterns, replacing them with healthier and more productive ways of thinking. The overlapping of mental health, academic performance, and personal life is a delicate balance, but I’ve come to see it as an opportunity for growth and resilience. By prioritizing my mental health through prayer, therapy, and organization, I am not only overcoming obstacles but also building a foundation for long-term success. This journey is far from easy, but it is shaping me into a stronger, more empathetic, and determined individual.

At 19, I faced a profound life challenge when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. With a 5-pound tumor, I underwent an ovariectomy and four rounds of chemotherapy, an experience that tested every part of my being. As a first-generation college student, a Black woman, and a mother of five, I’ve always been accustomed to overcoming challenges, but this one was different. I believe it was the prayers of my mother and church family that carried me through this time, alongside my faith in Jesus Christ. Their unwavering support became my anchor, reinforcing my trust in God’s healing power. One night, when the effects of my medication prevented me from resting, I felt completely drained. I couldn’t articulate my needs or ask for relief, so I turned to prayer, letting my spirit communicate when my words fell short. It was then, for the first time, that I spoke in tongues. My body felt weak, but I was enveloped by a peace that only God could provide, and I finally drifted off to sleep. Since then, in moments of stress or uncertainty, I continue to put my faith in the Lord, knowing He will guide me through any challenge. Today, as a 44-year-old wife and mother, I continue to draw strength from my faith, and I’m more determined than ever to build a lasting legacy for my family. My goal is to earn my degree in business and establish a company focused on financial literacy and support for college students, especially those from underserved communities. I have always believed that a lack of knowledge can be a barrier to success, as Scripture says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). I’ve seen how financial challenges can hinder dreams, and I am passionate about breaking this cycle. This $5,000 scholarship would be a tremendous blessing, enabling me to pursue my degree without adding financial strain to my family. My education journey has been long, and this scholarship would bring me closer to my goal of using my knowledge to create resources that empower college students to make wise financial decisions, avoid debt, and achieve their dreams. Through my experiences, I’ve come to understand the value of empathy, resilience, and faith. My hope is to be a blessing to others, using my education and life lessons to uplift those facing similar obstacles. As a mother, a survivor, and a believer, I am committed to serving my community and helping others achieve the knowledge and resources they need for a brighter future.

My mother’s hard work taught me that, despite adversity, perseverance can overcome obstacles. These early lessons drive me, even as a 44-year-old mother of five, to pursue higher education and a meaningful career, building a legacy of resilience and success for my family. My goal is to make a lasting impact by creating a business that supports college students from low-income backgrounds, helping them avoid financial pitfalls and focus on their studies. I want to create resources that provide students and their families with practical financial solutions. I am actively working toward my goals through education and entrepreneurial planning. Education has always been a cornerstone of my life, shaping my growth, career, and vision for the future. As a 44-year-old Black woman, wife, mother of five, and a first-generation college student, I’m on a path to achieve what many in my family could not. My journey has taught me that education is more than acquiring knowledge; it’s a vehicle for empowerment, community uplift, and the creation of generational wealth. Being the first in my family to earn a college degree is profoundly meaningful to me. It represents breaking cycles and setting a new standard for my children, who will have the support and guidance that I lacked. As an "Upstander," I believe in using my education and experience to advocate for change, empowering those around me to realize their potential. This commitment fuels my drive to create a business that will directly support college students, especially those from first-generation backgrounds, like myself. In college, I’m pursuing a degree in business to develop a platform that promotes financial literacy and provides students with resources for financial stability. Through this platform, I hope to address one of the largest challenges faced by college students today: maintaining financial health while pursuing a degree. My business will promote degree completion by easing financial pressures and creating a support system that fosters open communication between students and their families and friends. I want to ensure that students, especially those without a financial safety net, have access to the support they need to stay focused on their academic goals without turning to high-interest loans or other harmful credit options. My entrepreneurial vision extends beyond individual support—it aims to empower entire communities. Education empowers individuals, and when supported across generations, it has the power to create lasting change. By encouraging financial literacy, I am not only helping students to manage their current needs but also equipping them with skills to build a financially secure future. This kind of stability and empowerment is key to creating generational wealth, allowing families to pursue educational and entrepreneurial opportunities with a stronger foundation. Through 15 years in corporate America, earning my associate degree, and obtaining career-specific certifications, I have seen firsthand the obstacles and sacrifices required to succeed without a degree. These experiences have instilled in me the importance of education, not only as a path to personal advancement but as a means to reclaim valuable time and resources, which I am now using to inspire my children and others in my community. My long-term goals are rooted in building generational wealth and empowering the next generation. I want my children to understand that education is the strongest tool they have to create a life of opportunities, and that with education comes the responsibility to uplift others. Completing my degree is not only a personal milestone; it represents my commitment to creating a legacy that fosters financial literacy, degree completion, and community empowerment. Education has given me the tools to advocate for others, build a lasting foundation, and inspire a future where my family and community can thrive together.

As a 44-year-old Black woman, wife, mother of five, and a first-generation college student, I am navigating the complexities of balancing family, work, and my dreams of achieving a college degree. My journey has taught me that education is more than just acquiring knowledge; it’s a pathway to opportunities, financial security, and creating a legacy for my children. Being the first in my family to earn a college degree is incredibly meaningful to me. It represents the fulfillment of dreams that my family has held but could not always achieve due to systemic barriers and financial challenges. Earning my degree signifies breaking the cycle and setting a new standard for my children, who will have the opportunity to pursue higher education with my support and guidance. I want my children to understand that education is an empowering tool that can help them achieve independence, create opportunities, and leave a positive impact on the world. My goal in college is to major in business, which aligns with my aspirations to start a company that supports college students. Throughout my journey in corporate America, I’ve encountered firsthand the financial and academic challenges many students face, especially those who are first-generation, like myself. I’m passionate about creating a business that provides financial resources and support services to help students stay in school and thrive academically without the added stress of financial instability. For 15 years, I’ve worked in corporate America, gaining experience, earning an associate degree, and completing certifications specific to my field. These qualifications have allowed me to secure roles comparable to those of my peers with bachelor’s degrees, but their journeys were often shorter. This experience has shown me how valuable time is and how education can be the key to reclaiming it, enabling quicker access to higher-level positions and better opportunities. Long term, my goals extend beyond my career to building a foundation for generational wealth for my family. Growing up, I saw how financial limitations could impact dreams and potential. Now, as a mother, I am determined to break that cycle. By pursuing a business degree, I am not only investing in my personal and professional growth but also in a future where my family can thrive without the financial burdens that previous generations endured. Education is my way of securing financial literacy, stability, and a legacy that will empower my children and future generations. My journey through education has been long and challenging, but each step is a testament to resilience, growth, and purpose. Completing my degree is not just about reaching a personal milestone; it is about showing my children the value of persistence, creating opportunities for others through my future business, and building a lasting legacy. Education is the key to achieving these goals, helping me overcome obstacles, reclaim time, and lay a strong foundation for my family’s future.
    Augustus L. Harper Scholarship
Education has always been a driving force in my life, shaping my personal growth, career, and vision for the future. As a 44-year-old Black woman, wife, and mother of five, I’ve had to navigate the complexities of balancing family, work, and my goals. My journey has shown me that education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about unlocking opportunities, achieving financial security, and building a legacy for future generations. For the past 15 years, I’ve dedicated myself to corporate America, earning an associate degree and various career-specific certifications along the way. These certifications have allowed me to grow in my field and have put me in positions that are often comparable to those of my peers who hold bachelor’s degrees. However, while certifications and experience have enabled me to progress, my path has taken longer than others who achieved similar roles with a bachelor’s degree. Their journeys were often shorter, and that difference in time has highlighted the inherent value of having a degree early on. For me, education is about reclaiming that time and leveling the playing field to build a better future for my family. Despite my certifications and dedication, I have faced limitations in advancing my career due to not holding a bachelor’s degree. Many of my applications and promotions have been denied, underscoring the importance of education as a gatekeeper to career advancement. This barrier has only strengthened my resolve to complete my bachelor’s degree, not just for myself but also to serve as an example for my children. I want to show them that persistence and dedication can overcome even the toughest challenges. Beyond career advancement, education is about securing financial stability and creating generational wealth. Growing up, I witnessed how financial limitations could limit opportunities and dreams. Now, as a mother, I am determined to break that cycle. Pursuing my bachelor’s degree is more than just gaining credentials—it’s about opening doors that have remained closed to me and securing a future where my children can dream bigger and achieve more. By investing in my education, I am taking a critical step toward building financial literacy and stability for my family, something that will enable us to pursue and realize our full potential. My educational journey has been long and challenging, but it has taught me the value of resilience and resourcefulness. I know that each of my accomplishments has a deeper meaning for my family and future generations. In obtaining my bachelor’s degree, I am setting a new standard for my children, emphasizing that education is not only a tool for career growth but also a pathway to independence, empowerment, and lasting impact. Through this journey, I hope to show my children that education is not simply a requirement but a transformative experience. It can empower them to break through barriers and build lives filled with opportunity. Earning my degree will stand as a testament to the power of persistence and lifelong learning, reinforcing that education remains the most powerful tool for creating a lasting legacy. In essence, education is foundational not only to my personal and professional growth but also to breaking cycles and creating a future where my family can thrive. Pursuing my bachelor’s degree is the key to overcoming obstacles, reclaiming time, and ultimately establishing generational wealth that will benefit my family for years to come.
