One of the most memorable projects I worked on during my time at Salisbury University was a fitness app called "Walking For Wellness," which I developed in an object-oriented design class. This project was particularly exciting because it combined my interest in technology with my passion for fitness, allowing me to create something that could genuinely benefit others. The class itself was project-based, with a series of challenging assignments that pushed us to apply the principles of object-oriented design in practical ways. For this particular project, we were tasked with building a fitness app on Android Studio using Java. The app needed to include features such as user login and logout, a manager account that could oversee other accounts and send push notifications, a way to track various fitness activities like cardio exercises and weight-lifting, and a system to display this information through statistics. Beyond these basic requirements, we were given the freedom to implement the app in any way we saw fit, which allowed for a lot of creativity and innovation. The inspiration for my project came from a movement initiative at our school, which hosted a Spring walking steps challenge. I decided to incorporate this step challenge into my app, even though it wasn’t a required feature. This became my favorite part of the project. I added challenge widgets to the home page of the app, which would activate as soon as spring started. The challenge was based on each user's walking step count over a two-week cycle and continued until the end of spring. The app provided the total number of steps for each participant during each cycle, displayed the percentage of the challenge completed, and showed the rankings for each user. It was a fun and engaging way to motivate users to stay active, and I was thrilled with how it turned out. In addition to the step challenge, I included features that allowed users to manually enter their daily activities, such as cardio or weight-lifting. I also implemented various charts that displayed the activity data for each day, week, or month. This was made possible by connecting each data entry to a database, which was crucial for accurately tracking and displaying the information. The database integration was one of the more challenging aspects of the project, but it was essential for ensuring the app functioned correctly. The entire project took around 130-140 hours over the course of two months. It was a demanding and sometimes frustrating experience, with plenty of hurdles to overcome, but it was also incredibly rewarding. Seeing the final product come together, knowing how much work I had put into it, filled me with a sense of accomplishment that I hadn’t experienced before. Working on this project reinforced my passion for technology and its potential to make a positive impact on people’s lives. The ability to create something that could help others manage their fitness goals more effectively was deeply satisfying. It also made me realize how much I enjoy the process of designing and building applications that solve real-world problems. Technology inspires me because it offers endless possibilities for innovation and improvement. With the rapid advancements in fields like artificial intelligence and machine learning, there are so many opportunities to create new tools and make breakthroughs that could benefit society as a whole. This project was a powerful reminder of why I chose to pursue a degree in computer science, and it motivates me to continue exploring new ways to use technology to make a difference.

Attending a majority-white school, I initially felt the weight of being an outsider, but meeting other students who shared similar backgrounds and experiences allowed me to find my footing. These relationships have given me a reason to work hard and have provided a sense of belonging that has been invaluable in my educational journey. Cultural groups on campus have been particularly significant, offering spaces where I can share my experiences, learn from others, and build a support network that makes the challenges of higher education more manageable. However, the journey has not been without its concerns. One of the most persistent is the fear of not fitting in, a feeling that many first-generation immigrants grapple with. While it is not a concern that I allow to dominate my life, it is one that lingers in the background. The fear of being an outsider can sometimes create barriers to forming the connections that are essential for personal and academic growth. Without these connections, the quality of work can suffer, as collaboration and networking are often key to success in higher education and beyond. Yet, I believe in the power of turning challenges into opportunities. Recognizing this potential obstacle has driven me to actively seek out ways to feel more integrated into my environment. Whether through joining cultural organizations, participating in campus events, or simply reaching out to peers, I am committed to ensuring that I feel welcomed and valued in the spaces I inhabit. This proactive approach not only helps me maintain a positive mindset but also ensures that I am positioned to produce my best work. Looking to the future, I see my status as an outsider not as a disadvantage but as a unique perspective that can contribute to my success. My experience as a first-generation immigrant has instilled in me a strong work ethic, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the opportunities I have been given. These qualities will continue to drive me as I pursue my goals in higher education and beyond. My involvement in my local church has been a cornerstone in my commitment to serving the community. Joining our church's youth group opened the door to various service opportunities, each of which has allowed me to give back in meaningful ways while growing spiritually and personally. One of the most impactful experiences has been participating in mission trips across the country. These trips exposed me to communities vastly different from my own, highlighting the diversity of needs and the universal power of kindness. Whether we were rebuilding homes in disaster-stricken areas or offering support to those in underprivileged neighborhoods, these experiences instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a drive to make a positive impact wherever I can. In addition to these larger-scale efforts, our youth group regularly dedicates time to help local households with various tasks. From raking leaves to mowing lawns and even assisting with grocery shopping, these small acts of service have taught me the importance of being a good neighbor. These moments of direct, personal connection with those we help are often the most rewarding. It's a reminder that even the simplest gestures can significantly improve someone's day, especially for those who may struggle to accomplish these tasks on their own. Another crucial aspect of our service is Brother's Pantry, a food drive initiative where we organize and distribute food to people in need. This project not only provides essential resources to our community but also fosters a spirit of giving and compassion among our youth group members. Being part of this initiative has taught me the value of organization, teamwork, and the importance of addressing food insecurity at a local level. It's an ongoing effort that directly impacts the well-being of our community, and I take pride in contributing to it. Beyond meeting physical needs, our church places a strong emphasis on building relationships and sharing our faith. Hosting community potlucks has been a beautiful way to bring people together, creating bonds over shared meals and open conversations. These gatherings are more than just social events; they are opportunities to share the gospel in a welcoming and non-intrusive manner. It's in these moments that I’ve seen the power of community and the importance of creating spaces where people can connect and support one another. One of the highlights of our service activities is the Vacation Bible School (VBS) we run each summer. This camp is designed for kids across the community, offering them a fun and engaging way to learn about the Bible. Through games, crafts, and storytelling, we create an environment where children can explore their faith in a joyful and interactive way. Being a part of VBS has been particularly rewarding, as it allows me to combine my passion for teaching with my desire to serve. Watching the kids grow in their understanding and excitement for the Bible is incredibly fulfilling, and it reinforces the importance of nurturing the next generation's spiritual journey. In all these efforts, my involvement in the church has deepened my understanding of service. It’s not just about the actions we take, but the love and intention behind them. Whether on mission trips, helping neighbors, organizing food drives, or engaging with the community through potlucks and VBS, I’ve learned that service is a powerful expression of faith. It’s about meeting people where they are, offering support, and building a stronger, more compassionate community. Through these experiences, I've discovered that serving others is not just a duty but a privilege and a calling that I hope to continue throughout my life.
