Being Native American has shaped every part of who I am and how I see the world. I am a proud member of the Koi Nation of Northern California, and my connection to my tribe, my family, and our traditions runs deep. Growing up, I learned early on that being Native means carrying both the weight of history and the pride of our culture. It means honoring those who came before us and continuing to fight for our future. One of the most meaningful ways I stay connected to my roots is through powwow dancing. I dance for my grandpa, who has always been a role model and source of strength in my life. He takes the time to teach me how to put together my regalia, showing me the meaning behind each piece and how everything we wear and do in the circle has purpose. When I dance, I am not just moving to the rhythm. I am honoring my family, my tribe, and my ancestors. It is one of the strongest feelings of pride and identity I have ever experienced. Another tradition that holds a special place in my heart is beading. My cousin taught me how to bead, and I have learned to appreciate the patience, skill, and care it takes to create something meaningful. Whether I am making beadwork for regalia or small gifts, I know that I am continuing something passed down through generations. Beading allows me to express who I am while keeping our culture alive. While these cultural practices bring joy and strength, I have also witnessed the struggles my tribe faces. The Koi Nation has spent years working to establish a casino as a way to bring economic stability, create jobs, and provide better housing, education, and healthcare for our people. But we have faced constant legal and political roadblocks that make it hard for smaller tribes like ours to be seen and heard. Watching our leaders continue to push forward despite the odds has been both inspiring and motivating for me. That is why I am working toward my degree, because I want to help lead my people. My education is not just for me. It is for my community. I want to serve on tribal council and eventually become tribal chairman. I believe in protecting our sovereignty, preserving our traditions, and building a stronger future for the next generation. Everything I have learned, from powwow dancing to beading to witnessing my tribe’s struggle, is pushing me toward that goal. I know I will be ready to carry that responsibility with pride.
