    Women in Healthcare Scholarship
    The last time I visited the Uganda Virus Research Institute Clinic in Entebbe, I walked through the crowded hallways and watched the healthcare workers do their best with limited resources. A nurse struggled with an IV line while a patient with severe dehydration waited for treatment. The problem wasn’t the skill of the nurses: it was the lack of medical supplies. From that day, I learned that temporary fixes, like bringing in donations, only scratch the surface of a much deeper issue. True change requires understanding how healthcare systems work, from biological sciences to public health policies, and finding long-term solutions. My experiences in Uganda, where social class and wealth often determine access to healthcare, started my interest in exploring how science can drive systemic reform. More intriguing is that these challenges aren’t confined to developing countries. In neighbourhoods like Dorchester in Boston, my birth city, similar healthcare inequities persist, with residents facing higher rates of asthma, diabetes, and premature mortality. I realised that the healthcare problems I care about are both local and global, and I need to approach them from an interdisciplinary perspective. Through the kind of comprehensive education I’m looking for, in biological Sciences major with a concentration in Neurobiology and Behavior, I want to study how neurological disorders disproportionately affect marginalised communities and how factors like nutrition, environmental exposure, and socioeconomic status contribute to these health disparities. This excites me because it will allow me to work with cutting-edge technologies like optogenetics and neuroimaging to better understand how neurological disorders can be addressed from a scientific perspective. Beyond research, I want to understand how policies and social determinants of health play into these disparities. Global Health at CALS will provide the perfect opportunity for me to engage with public health issues on a broader scale. I’m particularly excited about working in settings where I can apply my knowledge to address global healthcare challenges, both in Uganda and underserved areas in the U.S. The opportunity to combine coursework, research, and hands-on public health experience is exactly what I need to gain the tools to build sustainable, systemic solutions. At university, I can develop the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to drive real change in healthcare systems. Moreover, by combining insights from biological science, public health, and policy, I hope to work toward a future where access to healthcare is not a privilege but a right for all communities.

I’ve utilized free or discounted resources wherever possible, spent countless hours borrowing prep books from libraries, and leaned on community support networks to stay focused on my goals. However, these stopgaps come with trade-offs, such as limited access to the most up-to-date study tools or additional stress from juggling work and school responsibilities to cover costs. Receiving this scholarship would be a transformative relief. With financial support, I could allocate more time and energy to academic preparation rather than worrying about how to fund the next critical step in my journey. It would allow me to invest in high-quality study materials, attend preparation courses, and cover application fees without hesitation. This support would also grant me the mental clarity to focus on excelling academically and building a strong foundation for my future career in healthcare. My ultimate goal is to address health disparities through innovation and community engagement. I aspire to specialize in public health and medical innovation, working to develop affordable healthcare solutions that serve underserved populations. Whether it's implementing telemedicine in rural Ugandan clinics or reducing healthcare inequities in inner-city Boston neighborhoods, I aim to use my expertise to make a tangible difference. Equally important to me is giving back to others who face similar challenges in pursuing STEM careers. I want to mentor students from underrepresented and financially constrained backgrounds, providing guidance and resources to navigate the barriers I have encountered. I hope to establish scholarship programs and initiatives that expand access to professional programs for students like myself.     When I recently visited the Uganda Virus Research Institute Clinic in Entebbe, the hallways were packed: people waited in long queues in an uncomfortable and uncertain atmosphere. I saw a pregnant woman sitting with her legs spread in her chair like a dried tilapia, her face lined with exhaustion. A few meters away, a young boy gasped for breath while his panicking mother begged the nurses for help. The nurses were doing their best, but the oxygen tanks had run dry. I watched helplessly as the boy's condition worsened, and the hospital remained ill-equipped to help him. This moment burned into my memory. It underscored for me the harsh reality that, in some places, a lack of resources can mean the difference between life and death. This wasn’t just an isolated issue in the UVRI Clinic or Kampala. Across Uganda, social class and wealth dictate access to healthcare, leaving many without even basic services. The disparities are particularly stark for people in rural areas or urban slums, who often face long travel distances to reach underfunded and overcrowded clinics. Yet, when I learned about neighborhoods like Dorchester in Boston, I saw similar patterns repeating themselves. In these communities, life expectancy is almost 23 years lower than in wealthier areas like Back Bay. Residents face higher rates of premature mortality due to chronic illnesses, inadequate preventive care, and systemic barriers to health equity. People with conditions like asthma or diabetes, particularly in predominantly Black and Latinx communities, encounter fewer resources and higher rates of emergency room visits. Recognizing that these issues play out in both my home country and my birth state of Massachusetts made me realize that healthcare inequities are not confined to so-called third-world regions—they are systemic, deeply entrenched global problems. Growing up between Uganda and the United States, I became keenly aware of these disparities. My family’s financial situation meant that my access to opportunities was often limited. In Uganda, my parents worked tirelessly to ensure we had the basics, but there were moments when a doctor’s visit or a prescription would strain our budget. Back in Boston, navigating our dual identities as immigrants meant balancing tight finances while seeking better educational opportunities. I distinctly remember attending school in the U.S. and feeling the tension between what was available to others versus what my family could afford. This duality—living between two worlds, both rich in culture but often lacking in resources—taught me resilience and adaptability. These qualities became essential as I started seeking ways to contribute meaningfully to my communities despite our financial challenges. In Uganda, I’ve tried to help in small but impactful ways. Volunteering in clinics like the one at UVRI allowed me to organize supplies and assist with basic tasks. During last summer's outreach, I saw a nurse struggle with IV therapy to treat a patient with severe dehydration. It struck me that the need for change goes far deeper than just providing supplies. It requires rethinking the entire healthcare system to ensure sustainability and equity. In Boston, I’ve engaged with community initiatives aimed at addressing health disparities in underserved areas like Roxbury and Dorchester. These experiences taught me that real change demands both systemic reforms and grassroots engagement. Whether in Kampala or Boston, the need for affordable, accessible, and culturally competent healthcare is urgent. Despite the obstacles I’ve faced, these experiences have driven my passion for STEM, particularly in fields like public health and medical innovation. STEM offers a way to not only understand the root causes of healthcare inequities but also to devise tangible solutions. I’m particularly interested in harnessing technology to bridge healthcare gaps in resource-poor settings. For example, telemedicine has the potential to bring expert consultations to remote clinics in Uganda, while data analytics can help identify and address disparities in urban areas like Boston. These tools can democratize healthcare, ensuring that quality care reaches those who need it most. The adversity I’ve faced, particularly in terms of financial constraints, has shaped my perspective and driven my determination. It has taught me that barriers, while formidable, are not insurmountable. I’ve learned to find creative solutions, to persevere when resources are scarce, and to dream of a better future even when the odds seem stacked against me. These lessons inform my passion for STEM and my commitment to equity. They fuel my desire to make a tangible impact on the lives of others. Looking to the future, I hope to work at the intersection of healthcare innovation and community development. My dream is to co-create sustainable healthcare solutions with local communities, ensuring that access to life-saving treatments is not dictated by geography or socioeconomic status. In Uganda, I imagine establishing a network of community-based health centers equipped with affordable diagnostic tools and preventive care programs. In underserved neighborhoods like Roxbury, I envision initiatives that combine local knowledge with modern technology to reduce health disparities and improve outcomes. Ultimately, I want my work to bridge the gap between what is and what could be. Whether it’s ensuring that no child in a Ugandan clinic dies because of a lack of oxygen or that no resident in Dorchester has to skip life-saving treatment due to financial barriers, my mission is clear. I believe that through education, innovation, and collaboration, we can build a world where healthcare systems serve everyone, not just the privileged few. This is the legacy I hope to leave—one of equity, compassion, and transformative change.

    The road to Kibera was filled with potholes that rattled the bus as we made our way to the village. When we arrived, we walked into a classroom that had never seen better days—the roof was patched, the walls cracked, and the windows were long gone. I sat with a group of young girls, and one of them opened up about how she missed school for several days each month because her family couldn’t afford sanitary products. I remember her voice dropping as she admitted that, when she felt defiant, she used old, washed rags as makeshift pads, but it often resulted in yeast infections. The pain and frustration in her story hit me hard and made me realise how something so basic could stand in the way of a girl’s education. Back at church the next day, I couldn’t stop thinking about her words. I knew I had to do something. Leaning on the values I had grown up with compassion, service, and responsibility—I organised a small fundraising project. I reached out to friends, family, and church members and we raised some money to provide sanitary towels for the girls. When I returned to Kibera weeks later, I saw the difference. The girls were back in school, and their smiles and gratitude made me appreciate how small actions can lead to real change. When I joined boarding in U. S. A, instead of withdrawing, I stepped up and became the president of the Diversity,Equity, and Inclusion Club. I led this group to create spaces where students could share their experiences and feel a sense of belonging, just as I had tried to do for the girls in Kibera. My school community has taught me that true service goes beyond words and requires action. Whether helping girls in Kibera or working toward inclusivity in a school setting, I have learned that real community means stepping up when others need support.
