Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
From a young age, I was deeply inspired by my parents, whose dedication to serving their communities shaped my own desire to help others. My mother worked as a community mental and physical health advocate, and my father was a volunteer coach and male mentor to many of my friends who didn't have one. Together, they demonstrated the profound impact that one person can have on the well-being of others, whether through providing support in times of need or guiding youth toward personal success. This passion for giving back to the community became ingrained in me and ultimately led me to pursue a career in nursing.
Nursing, to me, represents an extension of the caring and compassionate principles I’ve seen modeled in my parents’ lives. Their unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those around them sparked a similar drive within me to pursue a profession that would allow me to actively contribute to the health and well-being of others. Whether it was my father mentoring young athletes or my mother organizing health awareness campaigns, their work showed me that serving others is not just a job but a calling.
I’ve always been drawn to helping those in need, and as I began to explore my own path, I realized that nursing would provide the perfect avenue for me to do so. Through my volunteer work and academic achievements, I’ve been able to see firsthand how vital it is to have compassionate individuals in healthcare roles. As an aspiring nurse, I envision myself not only providing direct care but also advocating for better health outcomes within my community—just as my parents did in their own careers.
I have worked diligently to gain experience and skills that will prepare me for a nursing career. In high school, I was fortunate enough to receive the Stephen A. McLaughlin Fairfax County Champions of Character Award for my sportsmanship, community service, and character. These attributes are central to nursing, where empathy, integrity, and professionalism are essential. My time as a Youth Public Health Ambassador with the Fairfax County Health Department and as a program mentor with LAZERA Ministries has allowed me to build strong relationships with diverse groups, and I’ve seen how small interventions can make a big difference in people’s lives. I am particularly proud of my work on mental health programs, which not only educated teens on important health topics but also provided them with the tools to make better choices for themselves and their communities.
Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to receive recognition for my efforts, including the LAZERA Anthony Thompson Public Health Award for promoting health and well-being in my community. These experiences have reinforced my belief that the healthcare profession, particularly nursing, offers an extraordinary platform to make a real difference.
In pursuing a nursing career, I hope to continue the legacy of service my parents started and take it even further by working on the frontlines of healthcare. My passion for helping others, coupled with the skills I’ve developed through my academic and extracurricular experiences, drives me to make a lasting, positive impact. I look forward to the day when I can help patients directly while also working to improve health outcomes within the community, just as my parents did before me.
Thank you for your consideration of my application for the Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students.
Sincerely,
Anthony Thompson

I aim to positively impact the nursing profession by blending my passion for community engagement, leadership skills, and academic commitment. As an aspiring nursing professional, I am deeply committed to improving public health outcomes, fostering health equity, and empowering individuals within underserved communities. Through my educational journey and hands-on experiences, I have developed a unique skill set that I believe will enable me to contribute to the future of nursing in meaningful ways.
My background in community outreach and public health equips me with the knowledge to address the root causes of health disparities. As a Youth Public Health Ambassador with the Fairfax County Health Department, I designed and implemented a mental health program focusing on drug and alcohol abuse. This role sharpened my ability to develop health interventions tailored to specific populations, a skill that will be invaluable in nursing practice. I also participated in the Health Education Leadership Program, where I explored diverse health professions and gained insight into workforce development and community collaboration. These experiences sparked my desire to pursue nursing and solidified my commitment to making healthcare more accessible and equitable.
As a leader and mentor with LAZERA Ministries, I work with youth to promote mental health awareness, college readiness, and career development. These experiences have strengthened my communication and teamwork abilities, essential in nursing practice. Nurses often work in interdisciplinary teams, and my ability to collaborate with peers, engage with diverse populations, and adapt to new challenges will help me thrive in the nursing field. Additionally, I understand the importance of cultural competence in delivering patient-centered care, and I am committed to continuously learning and growing to meet the diverse needs of patients.
My academic success, maintaining a 4.0 GPA at Morgan State University, demonstrates my dedication to excellence and ability to handle the rigorous demands of nursing education. I am eager to apply this work ethic to my future nursing practice, where I plan to pursue specialties in public health and administrative support. I believe these areas of focus will allow me to merge my passion for healthcare with my organizational and leadership skills, ultimately helping to create more effective healthcare systems and better patient outcomes.
In summary, my diverse experiences in community engagement, public health, leadership, and teamwork, combined with my academic dedication, position me to make a positive impact on the nursing profession. I am excited to contribute to healthcare by improving patient care, advocating for health equity, and inspiring future generations of nurses.
Thank you for the consideration of my application for the Jase Davidsaver RN Memorial Scholarship.
