Jorian Kuran Harris (Shugg) Helping Heart Foundation Scholarship
My name is Anthony Leon I am a first-generation student and the first in my family I will be attending the University of Houston Downtown in the school of The Marilyn Davies College of Business as a freshman undergraduate. The Jorian Kuran Harris (Shugg) Helping Heart Foundation Scholarship will help my financial situation in attending college and paying for my tuition and supplies which will make a difrence in aiding me and giving me less stress about money while attending classes. I am studying to become a finance manager and help people and businesses to flourish financially. Learning finances in this future is essential especially with the world's market changing constantly and a person must know how businesses and finances work which can help me be as successful as possible. I would also love to use what I learn to aid my family who as immigrants to the United States do not have a full understanding of how businesses work and help them be financially free with the use of education. To accomplish this goal I plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in business finances which will teach me valuable education to help my family and get my dream job. A time when I felt emotionally weak was when I came into despair after my school Yes Prep Southwest was shot up I lost hope in the world and everyone around me. I shut myself away from the world, I felt lonely and was lacking motivation in anything especially coming back to school. While I was at my lowest classmates who experienced the shooting along with me had come back in a much more healthier mindset and began to speak openly in class about the importance of mental health and the need to speak with your loved ones. it took my friends and family to remind me that my actions affect me, they reminded me that matter to him and that I have high potential and I cannot allow such a traumatic event to stop me. I must keep hope that in a world that is filled with malice and evil that pursues does who can't defend themselves. Fear, despair and loneliness because of my classmate's inspirational rants he gave me to keep on going and keep on fighting for what I believe in. I gained motivation to focus more on my class work in life to improve myself to become successful in the future in business finance.
Kristie's Kids - Loving Arms Around Those Impacted By Cancer Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have known people who have contracted cancer and sadly the majority of them have passed away. Although losing so many people to this dangerous disease would make me lose absolute hope for a person when they find cancer in their system one case changed my entire perception of the idea that it's all over for them. An aunt who is a single mother to my 5-year-old cancer had found a tumor in their throat. The news devastated everyone when they heard, no one could properly sleep at night, especially my parents. My mom is haunted by the Idea of her little sister dying before her at such a young age and my father is already too traumatized by his father’s death due to liver cancer. My self I would cry believing she was going to die, and her little girl didn’t understand what was going on. Religion is a huge part of my family and is something I wouldn’t involve my self in much, but for the very first time in my life, I begged along with my entire family to save her from any pain and to get rid of cancer. As a family, we united being there for her every single day with my aunt and my little cousin. After 3 months of chemotherapy and lots of surgeries, she did it. She was cancer free. Cancer has changed me in many ways I’ve never thought, I’ve always been the hopeless guy who would come to despair at any sort of challenge in life coming my way. Life doesn’t throw challenges at you one after another, they come while you are curled up in a corner or in stressed out from what you already have. I’ve learned that I can’t keep doing this to myself, I can’t cry over everything I have going through, just like my aunt through the 3 months of her knowing she has a deadly disease, I can’t give up I have people counting on me like my cousin to my aunt. Life is filled with negativity and challenges, not about everything being handed to me. Coming to college I am now mentally prepared for all kinds of challenges coming my way, especially as a first-generation student trying to be the change in my family to attend college. In college, I want to pursue my bachelor’s degree not just for myself but for the rest of my family and the generation that comes next. Cancer can be the worst someone can experience in life for them and their loved ones, but these kinds of experiences shape people in ways that can make them stronger mentally. I will peruse my education no matter what comes my way, I’ll find my way to get through any obstacle thrown at me.

As a Hispanic student pursuing an accounting degree, I have a clear vision of how I want to make a positive impact with my career. I strongly believe that I can use my skills and knowledge to benefit not just myself, but also my community and those who are in need. First and foremost, I aim to serve as a role model and mentor for other Hispanic students who are interested in pursuing careers in accounting or finance. I understand that many students from minority backgrounds face unique challenges and obstacles that may hinder their academic and professional pursuits. Therefore, I want to be a source of guidance and support to those who need it most. I plan to achieve this by actively participating in student organizations that promote diversity and inclusion, as well as by volunteering my time to mentor students who may be struggling academically or professionally. By sharing my experiences, offering advice, and providing encouragement, I hope to inspire other students to follow in my footsteps and pursue careers in accounting or finance. Secondly, I plan to use my accounting skills to provide financial services to Hispanic individuals and small businesses in my community. I understand that many people in my community may not have access to professional financial services or may not be able to afford them. Therefore, I want to use my knowledge to help these individuals and businesses manage their finances more effectively. For example, I could offer assistance with tax preparation, budgeting, financial planning, and other related services. By doing so, I can help these individuals and businesses save money, make informed financial decisions, and ultimately improve their financial stability. Lastly, I plan to work with non-profit organizations that serve the Hispanic community. I believe that many of these organizations are underfunded and understaffed, which limits their ability to provide much-needed services to those in need. As an accountant, I can help these organizations manage their finances more efficiently, develop sustainable budgets, and secure funding from donors and sponsors. For instance, I could offer assistance with grant applications, financial reporting, and budget development. By doing so, I can help these organizations achieve their missions, serve more people in need, and make a meaningful impact on the Hispanic community. In conclusion, as a Hispanic student pursuing an accounting degree, I have a clear vision of how I want to make a positive impact on my career. I plan to serve as a role model and mentor to other students, provide financial services to individuals and small businesses in my community, and work with non-profit organizations that serve the Hispanic community. Through these efforts, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and leave a positive legacy that inspires others to pursue their passions and dreams.
