I am Anthony Hines, a proud Cyber Engineering major at Houston Christian University (HCU). Born and raised in Long Beach, California, I've always been fascinated by how technology connects people, communities, and even entire nations. Growing up, I witnessed both the incredible power of technology to improve lives and the dangers it presents when used unethically or without proper protection. These experiences are what inspired me to pursue Cyber Engineering, a field that combines both cybersecurity and electrical engineering. This is a great step for me to be part of creating a safer, more secure digital world. My experiences have taught me that relationships are everything. Whether I would play American football at HCU as a linebacker, or perform in track & field as a decathlete at Cerritos Community College (Norwalk, California). Throughout those moments, I am blessed to have the support of my family, mentorship from professors, and friendships with peers. My family, in particular, has always been my foundation. As the child of a veteran, I learned discipline, respect, and the value of service to others. My parents taught me that success isn't just about personal gain, it's about using your skills to lift others and protect those who can't protect themselves. Throughout this past year, my professors and classmates have encouraged me not only to develop my technical skills but also to grow as a leader and a servant to the community. In the Cyber Engineering program, I’m learning how to defend critical systems from cyberattacks and how electrical engineering plays a role in building reliable and secure infrastructure. These skills are especially important today, as technology touches nearly every aspect of our daily lives. Receiving this scholarship would mean more than financial support; it would be an investment in my ability to make a real difference. With less financial burden, I could focus more of my energy on gaining the knowledge and experience I need to serve both my immediate community and the broader world. I plan to use my education to help improve Microsoft, Google, or Apple’s hardware and software to become more cyber-safe and electrically safe. As I work towards that goal, I want to be part of efforts that increase digital safety in under-resourced communities, where cybersecurity often takes a backseat to other concerns. More importantly, I want to use my knowledge and experiences to inspire others, especially young people from communities like mine. Coming from the north side of Long Beach (right next to Compton), I know how easy it is to feel like success in a field like engineering is out of reach, but I believe that with hard work, mentorship, and support, like this scholarship, anyone can make an impact. Thank you for considering me for this opportunity. I am committed to using the resources and education I gain not just for my benefit, but to create a safer, stronger community for everyone.
