Bio

Hi! I am going back to school to achieve the dream I have developed while being an undergrad and my first few years out of school. The jobs that I had as a chemical engineer were unfulfilling, and I realized in that time that I wanted to do something more. I thought about the people I learned about in school who created a drug to help with type 1 diabetes. I also thought about the doctors and scientists who helped my dad beat cancer just a few years ago. With all this in mind, I decided to switch gears and develop new medicines for the world. For that, I needed to get a higher education. After getting into Georgetown, it was a no-brainer that I would pursue this goal at such a prestigious university. However, it comes with quite a price. I want it to be known that any scholarship money I obtain will be going towards the greater good of everyone in the world, and I hope you will join me on this ride.

Golf has been a part of my life since I was five years old, when my grandfather gave me my first set of clubs. Some of my earliest memories are of hitting those clubs around the backyard with my older brother. Once, I accidentally hit him in the eye (whoops!). Those moments were full of laughter and learning, but the real lessons came on the driving range at Silver Creek Country Club, where my dad patiently helped me develop my swing. I started with putting, then moved on to chipping, and gradually worked my way up to full irons and woods. At ten years old, although I couldn’t yet play the longer par 4s and par 5s because I didn’t hit the ball far enough, I made the most of playing par 3 courses and even got a hole-in-one. That moment was a huge confidence boost and a reminder that progress is often about making the most of the opportunities you have. I wanted to play the full course right away, but I had to accept that I wasn’t ready yet. Through patience and practice, I improved bit by bit until I was able to play confidently on all the holes. By the time I was 15, I became a valuable member of my high school golf team, ranking among the top five players as a freshman. Golf taught me early on that persistence, steady progress, and a positive mindset are what lead to success. More than just a sport, golf gave me quality time with my family. Those early afternoons on the driving range with my dad, the friendly competition with my brother, and the quiet moments on the course all created memories that shaped who I am. Golf taught me patience, not just in the game itself, but in life. It showed me the value of setting goals, working toward them step by step, and celebrating each small victory along the way. That mindset has carried over into my studies and career in pharmacology. Just as golf requires patience, persistence, and dedication to improve, developing new drugs demands the same qualities. The process of discovering and bringing safe, effective medications to the public takes time, careful research, and problem-solving at every step. My journey to becoming a skilled golfer taught me that steady progress and resilience are essential for success, lessons I apply daily in my pursuit to work in drug development. I am passionate about being part of the process that transforms scientific discoveries into treatments that give families more precious time together. The same kind of quality time that golf helped create for me growing up. I am honored to apply for the Samuel D. Hartley Memorial Scholarship, which celebrates not only a passion for golf but also the values that the sport instills which are values I carry with me every day.

Cancer has always been a distant word until it became part of my story in 2017, when my father was diagnosed. The emotional toll was overwhelming, but the financial strain was just as tough. Watching my dad battle cancer while our financial stability crumbled made me realize how much cancer impacts not just the individual, but their entire family. When my father was diagnosed, my mother had to return to work, adding stress to an already difficult situation. We had to sell our house, move into a rental, and I had to change high schools halfway through my freshman year. It was a lot for anyone, let alone a teenager. I saw firsthand how cancer disrupted everything—our finances, relationships, and sense of security. At a young age, I had to mature quickly and learn how to navigate these challenges. Despite the emotional and financial struggles, I focused on what I could control: my education. The challenges my family faced because of cancer only fueled my determination to succeed in school. While I couldn’t change my father’s diagnosis, I could control my academic future and work toward a career that could help others facing similar battles. As my father’s treatment continued, I realized the importance of science, research, and medicine. Watching my dad fight for his life and seeing the limitations of treatments made me want to be part of a field that could develop better treatments for people like him. This sparked my passion for pharmaceutical research and drug development, motivating me to pursue a Master’s in pharmacology. In my studies, I’m learning how drugs can change lives and offer hope to families battling illnesses like cancer. The financial burden of cancer treatment impacted our ability to plan for the future. The money that could have gone toward my education was spent on medical bills, making higher education feel like an impossible dream. But I refused to let these struggles derail my goals. I worked hard, maintained a strong GPA, and sought out scholarships to help me continue my education. Watching my father battle cancer and the toll it took on our family taught me resilience and how medicine can profoundly impact not just the patient, but their entire family. These lessons have stayed with me throughout my academic journey. The Sharra Rainbolt Memorial Scholarship resonates with me because cancer has had such a profound impact on my life. Sharra’s story of courage and strength in the face of cancer mirrors my family’s experience. Like Sharra, who faced immense struggles but remained hopeful, I am driven by a desire to create meaningful change through drug development and support others facing similar challenges. This scholarship would help alleviate some of the financial burden that has followed me through my education, allowing me to continue my studies and focus on making a real difference in pharmacology. I am committed to using my experiences to create positive change, just as Sharra’s legacy continues to inspire others to overcome adversity and give back to their communities. Thank you for considering my application. The opportunity to continue my studies would not only honor my father’s fight but also pay tribute to Sharra Rainbolt’s resilience and the lasting impact she continues to have.
