“Knowledge is power” said Sir Francis Bacon in his book Meditationes Sacrae (1597). I hold this quote near and dear to my heart because for the goal I am pursuing I will need a lot of power. That is why my degree in Business Administration at Bowie State University. The knowledge that I accumulate throughout my tenure in college has the potential to greatly support my Foundation’s venture. My foundation, Promisedland, Incorporated is a non-profit organization with the purpose of offering mentorship for young people and workforce development training to adults in underprivileged communities. Presently the Foundation is in the early-stages of development. I will furthermore detail the vision of Promisedland, Incorporated throughout the course of this essay. Let’s begin. According to a study conducted by the Brookings Institute: children born into the bottom 10% of earners are more than twenty times as likely to be sentenced to prison, than the children of the top 10% of earners. One of the key aspects of Promisedland Incorporated is mentorship for young people that have grown up in less than fortunate circumstances to build a vision for their future beyond the typical nonsensical traps that are prevalent in the impoverished communities they’ve grown up in their whole lives. In my early youth I went through the struggle of growing up in the hood. I was caught up in all the typical stupid stuff that you could get caught up in growing up under those circumstances. However, when I turned 13 I met a beautifully spirited Financial Advisor named Mrs. Sharon Weaver who went on to become not only my mentor, but the person that helped me find my passion and love for Finance. She taught me as much as she could while she was still alive, and thanks to that I became focused on being successful at my craft; which in-turn helped begin to distance myself from the things that I had become accustomed to in the ‘hood’ that were holding me back. This can be done for other children / young people by introducing these kids to Professionals in different career paths, in an effort to help them find what they are passionate about. Long-term, nurturing these children educationally throughout their pursuit of finding a career that brings them fulfillment, would give them a substantial advantage in a society that is structured to have them stuck in a cycle of poverty. As for the Job-Training Development portion, that would be more-so geared towards the adults in the communities. Many businesses are afraid to hire people that come across as ‘ghetto’ (which is only a series of mannerisms that come from growing up in specific circumstances), and even more of them are opposed to hiring felons. When someone is released from prison the prospects of them securing a job that pays a decent living-wage are drastically cut. Which typically leads to them resulting to lives of crime just to support themselves, landing them back in prison. So my Foundation has the potential to become a place that these people could turn to for help with becoming better suited for the workforce. Via customer service and workplace etiquette training. This has the potential to make a major impact in this battle to improve the standards of living in impoverished communities. For these reasons I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree at Bowie State University. Thank you for your time. I am glad that I was able to share the vision with you.

The biggest problem facing the world right now is poverty. According to a study conducted by the Brookings Institute: children born into the bottom 10% of earners are more than twenty times as likely to be sentenced to prison, than the children of the top 10% of earners. Many businesses are afraid to hire people that come across as ‘ghetto’ (which is only a series of mannerisms that come from growing up in specific circumstances), and even more of them are opposed to hiring felons. Additionally, when someone is released from prison the prospects of them securing a job that pays a decent living-wage are drastically cut. Which typically leads to them resulting to lives of crime just to support themselves, landing them back in prison. This issue can be solved by my foundation: Promisedland, Incorporated. It is a non-organization based the state of Maryland; with the purpose of offering mentorship to young people and workforce development training to adults in underprivileged / impoverished communities. My business will be a non-profit organization aimed towards providing mentorship to youth living In poverty-stricken communities across the nation, as well as job preparation training for convicts upon their release. I need to create this company because growing up I also fell victim to some of the typical obstacles that that effect young people growing up in poverty. Living under those circumstances caused me to develop a mere survival mindset at a young age. However, I was blessed enough to meet someone that saw the potential in me. That person was my Finance teacher, Mrs. Sharon Weaver. She saw beyond my circumstances, and inspired me to use my gifts to strive for more than basic survival. The job readiness training aspect of my non-profit organization stems from the effects that the penal system has had on my family, friends, and countless people in my community. These people are typically influenced into a life crime due to their impoverished circumstances. Then they inevitably end up in the penal system they are labeled as “convicts”. In this country, once someone is labeled a “convict” finding affordable housing and decent job becomes exponentially more difficult. This in-turn leads to them returning to the the same criminal lifestyle that lead to them being imprisoned in the first place. So the purpose of my non-profit organization is to offer them an opportunity to step out of that cycle of poverty and crime. My non-profit will provide job readiness training to convicts and people in impoverished communities. We will then partner with local businesses and government to help find employment for these people after they are prepared to enter the workforce. My interest in entrepreneurship came naturally. Entrepreneurship is centered around approaching an industry in an innovative fashion. My mindset has always been innovative, so entrepreneurship is like second nature to me. That also ties into what I will do in the non-profit space, because non-profit business models have been relatively stagnant in recent history. So I plan on establishing a completely new, self-sustaining business model, that implements new technological concepts, such as crypto-mining. I will also pull from some of the key principles that have been used in the non-profit space for years, such as government funding and donations. This business is a labor of love. I will forever be grateful for the role that Mrs. Weaver played in my life. So it is my duty to establish an infrastructure for the generation under me to have a place to turn and seek mentorship. I will help break the ‘revolving door cycle’ of the penal system in my community because I love my community. Those are my goals and my motives. Thank you for your consideration.
