I am an aspiring architect on the path to my master's degree. I will continue to pursue a PhD after my master's in order to become a Dr. of Design and come up with innovative ways to solve the issues of the future through sustainable and durable methods. I aspire to achieve a degree in construction management later in my career as well as real estate and mechanics to have better knowledge of my surrounding fields.

"Go back to the kitchen", "you can't do that you're too weak", "that's for boys". These grotesque calls along with cat calling and childish taunts are all things I've dealt with in my life as a woman. As a Hispanic woman raised in a traditional environment I've been raised to be a housewife. I want to be everything but that. Why should I be restrained to 4 walls and serving a man as the "head of household" just because I am a woman. Ever since I was a little girl I have always reached for the stars. I have always had dreams of wanting to change the world and leaving my impact on this earth. My way of wanting to do this is through the field of Architecture. As a Hispanic woman in STEM I can design structures and facilities around the world to help people in minority countries and within the United States. I will use Architecture to bring better opportunities to the people in my community. I spend my time both in school and during breaks sketching and researching how I can solve present day issues in order to mold a better future for tomorrow.
A very large issue that is seen across my great city of Miami, Florida, is homelessness. Unfortunately, we live in a society where big cities often equal higher poverty rates especially in points where a great deal of immigrants are concentrated. A few months ago I was on a school trip in Downtown Miami and as I walked the streets in the early evening on my way to the bus I couldn't help but notice how there were homeless people sleeping in front of almost every storefront. Many of them are black and Hispanic. It is very hard for these people to recuperate their lives in such a busy and highly priced city. So I got to work.
I am currently designing a complex that would be integrated into the heart of the city of Miami. It would be representative of the city's main features, such as your bright Miami colors and decadent palm trees, so as to draw tourism and people to this neighborhood as to not alienate the residents from society. It would be a complex made only for homeless and low income people of the city. This will eventually turn into a much larger project as when the first complex is proven to be a success more will be created and built across towns and cities in South Florida to reduce the level of homelessness and get people to safer and cleaner places. This complex would consist of apartments ranging from 1-2 bedrooms depending on family size and would have multiple programs put into place to help these people improve their lifestyles. There would be a rehabilitation center on site for substance abuse, mental health, and other issues. There will also be a job center and volunteer community classrooms to assist these people in being able to learn how to get back on their feet through basic financial literacy courses and trade school careers where they can get basic certifications. There will be donation centers for outsiders to come and donate food, clothing, and furniture items as well as a discount grocery store and shopping center exclusively for residents.
This is just one of my many plans that I am developing to make a positive impact on the world. I will work hard to have society wake up to a world where we have less people hoping for a warm meal at night. My place is not in the kitchen.
