I was born into a single-parent household. My mother is our source of income. She arrived in America seeking refuge from a war in Liberia when she was just sixteen. She has seen a significant amount of trauma no sixteen-year-old should see. I want to make her proud since she risked everything for me to have a better life than she did. She did not have the luxury as I did growing up in America. I have the opportunity of free education. I also did not have to worry about where my next meal would come from, unlike when my mom was on the run trying to escape Liberia. I have the opportunity to better myself, unlike my mom and grandma. My grandma did not go to school. She also did not learn English in Liberia because she had to care for her children. My grandma is someone who helped my mom raise me. She quit her job to care for me while my mom was out working to pay the bills. My mom would tell me that she used to work two jobs just to make sure I had everything I needed. When she would work nights, she would come home and completely pass out from exhaustion. I am grateful for who I am today because without either of them I don't think I would be here. She pushes me to be the best that I can be because she does not want me to take what she has given me for granted. All the hardships that she has gone through are craved into my mind. Being raised by two strong women has developed me into the person I am today. When I put my mind to something I always strive to complete it. I am juggling a job, TCC dual credit classes, and regular school at the same time but I am not done yet. I push myself to my limit and past it because I won't be able to accomplish anything if I just stay in my comfort zone. I am striving to become a first-generation college graduate in my household, and also because the first entrepreneur in my whole family to create a business to help those struggling with mental health. With all the hardships that my mom and grandma have gone through to make sure I don't follow in their footsteps the only way I can repay them is by using all their love and supports to accomplish my plans.
