Softball has been a foundational part of my life, shaping me not only as an athlete but as a person. As a varsity player and first-team shortstop/third baseman, I’ve learned perseverance, leadership, teamwork, and the importance of community—lessons that extend well beyond the diamond. Every practice, every game, and every season has pushed me to grow stronger, adapt under pressure, and become a more disciplined and compassionate individual. Throughout my softball journey, I have experienced multiple coaching changes. My first coach had a rigid, emotionless approach, failing to truly teach us the game. While this was frustrating, it became an opportunity to learn what leadership should and should not look like. I realized that being a strong player isn’t just about skill; it’s about fostering a positive team environment and lifting others. I made it my priority to support my teammates, offer encouragement, and lead by example. One of the greatest gifts that softball has given me is the value of mentorship. I am a passionate and curious student with a strong interest in forensic science, and more recently, neurology. I’ve always been fascinated by how the body functions, how it survives trauma, and why it reacts the way it does. I’m especially intrigued by the brain’s ability to influence our actions without conscious permission. Understanding how the brain and body work together has deepened my passion for science and my desire to explore it further. My career goal is to work in a forensic science lab or possibly at a body farm, where I can study decomposition and other post-mortem processes that provide critical information in criminal investigations. I would also love the opportunity to work in labs that study the brain and body mechanics, uncovering how neurological and physiological systems interact, and how they contribute to behavior, memory, and trauma response. I want to use this knowledge to help solve real-world problems and support justice through science. Beyond academics, I am deeply committed to giving back. I have volunteered at the Kettle Falls Woodland Theatre, where I supported community productions and connected with others through creativity. I’m also an active student leader in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 4980, the Canine Crusaders, where I’ve developed leadership, problem-solving, and mentoring skills while encouraging younger members to discover their potential in STEM. Currently, I volunteer as an assistant coach for a 12U travel softball team, helping young athletes build confidence and grow on and off the field. I also love catching up with my younger cousin, giving him book recommendations and receiving his in return, which helps us both grow and bond. I love helping youth find and pursue their passions, whether that’s through science, sports, or the arts. Mentoring and encouraging the next generation brings me just as much joy as learning science does. I grew up in a very artistic family, surrounded by remarkable talent in drawing, painting, and other traditional forms of art. Yet, drawing was never my strength, and for years, I struggled to find a creative outlet that truly felt like mine. My life revolved around school, sports, and work, activities that were productive but lacked expression. That all changed the day I picked up a camera. In an instant, it felt as if I was seeing the world with new eyes, literally and figuratively. Photography became my gateway to creativity, offering a fresh perspective and a deeper connection to the world around me. With every frame, I found the opportunity to explore light, emotion, and detail. I started asking myself questions: How does this angle shape the story? What captures the viewer’s attention? How can this photo convey meaning without words? Through the lens of a camera, I not only discovered a way to express myself but also uncovered my own voice. It awakened a passion I didn’t know I had, and for the first time, I felt truly connected to the art I was creating. As an Asian woman pursuing a career in anthropology and anatomy, I have always been driven by a deep desire to challenge the status quo and break down barriers. Throughout my journey, I have sought not only to advance my technical skills but also to advocate for equal representation and opportunities for women, particularly women of color, in STEM. The Eric W. This scholarship represents an opportunity to further my education and leadership in STEM and, in turn, help bridge the gap in access to STEM resources for students in rural areas like my own. I grew up in a rural area where financial resources are scarce, and access to quality STEM education is limited. Many of the children in my community, including myself, have had to overcome significant barriers to pursue our interests in STEM. Few local programs offer hands-on experience in fields like robotics or engineering, and many students are unaware of the opportunities that exist beyond our small town. I’ve often found myself searching for resources and guidance that weren’t readily available, and it has been a struggle to access the tools and mentorship I needed to thrive. Despite these challenges, I’ve remained determined to succeed. I realized that the children in my community deserve the same opportunities as those in wealthier, more urban areas. They deserve access to quality STEM resources, mentorship, and a chance to explore careers that can empower them to reach for the stars. That’s why I’ve taken it upon myself to become a mentor and advocate for the youth in my community, working to provide them with the support they need to pursue their dreams in STEM. Math connects us to every aspect of reality, from the acorn in your backyard to the fixtures in a new house. I developed a deep appreciation for math in middle school, where I found my pre-algebra class particularly satisfying. There was something refreshing about its clarity—each problem had a definitive answer, leaving no room for ambiguity. I also enjoyed being part of the 'Math I Cool' club, where we tackled challenging math questions in a competitive yet supportive environment. Even though I might not have been the fastest competitor, I thoroughly enjoyed the process and the camaraderie. When I transitioned to high school, I was blown away by the subject's depth and complexity. What had once seemed straightforward now revealed layers of intricacy and nuance. It has been challenging to continue after transferring to an online course, but my mother played a significant role in keeping me motivated to continue with the class. Her support was crucial in helping me navigate the complexities and stay engaged with the subject. Math is my foundation, the rock upon which I’ll always build and grow. Though the term 'math' may seem simple, it represents something profoundly vast and fundamental. It builds upon itself, weaving threads into an ever-expanding and intricate system. This evolving nature of math fascinates me, as each concept and principle contributes to a broader, more interconnected whole.

Ever since I realized there was a world outside of my town, outside of my family, I wanted to leave and explore. As I grew, I became more aware that with freedom comes responsibility. I started working at 12 years old for my neighbor Daniel. He is a very extroverted man who is both strongly opinionated and open-minded. He needed someone to dig holes in his yard to find leaking pipes. My father was happy to get me out of the house, so I started digging.  After two weeks we found the buggers. Ever since then I would cut his grass, trim his apple tree, and even make sure his hot tub had the right chemicals added. I worked hard to make sure he was satisfied with my work and eventually, when I turned thirteen, he let me work in the field. He had two main farm fields with strong alfalfa. Daniel liked to talk to me about college, telling me about his time studying to be a lawyer, how leaving here was the best experience and he never regretted it. He believes I have what it takes to go to college and become amazing at what I study. Some of the colleges I’m applying to I wouldn’t even be looking at if he hadn’t cheered me on. My location can make certain activities hard. I am a First Robotics student and participate in researching, designing, creating, testing, and presenting robots! Usually, students are split into these categories and more to divide the work properly, but not us. We have such a small number of students participating that everyone must do a little bit of everything. All the students participate in another sport and 50% of them, including me, participate in all three seasonal sports. I run cross country in the fall, play basketball in the winter, and play softball in the spring. Many students I speak to from larger schools struggle to be accepted into one sport let alone three. One of my top priorities though is the younger kids of my town.  I’m currently invested in the next generation of children, guiding them to higher expectations and helping them find their spark. My hope is for these kids to utilize the experiences we can give them and grow into someone they are proud to be. In my town, high schoolers are told to go to college and reach high but once we graduate that all stops. I can’t name how many kids leave for college and then come back a month later having dropped out from all their classes. They work at the grocery store now. My cousin Mya, the first of our families’ grandchildren to graduate high school. She left for Oregon and 6 months later she came back. It made me question some things. If my amazing, valedictorian, basketball star cousin Mya couldn’t stay in college, how was I supposed to do any different? It scared me but not anymore, I grew up these past three years. With my loving family and their great advice, I learned that this town is a small pin on the map.  I understand who I am and who I want to be. I don’t have all the answers, but I will adapt and work hard. Through the highs and lows, I will make a name for myself.
