Bio

IIn August 2016, I went floating on the Clackamas River in Oregon with some friends and about 300 other summer enthusiasts. I had a small cut on my leg, which I barely noticed, but that cut led to an infection that would change the course of my life forever. I contracted Necrotizing Fasciitis, commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria, that day on the river. Eventually, I lost both legs below the knee and nine of my fingers due to sepsis and the subsequent coma. It took me a long time to recover physically from what had happened, and much, much longer to recover mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I remember cursing the angry God I believed had punished me for vanity and selfishness. But I have since realized that whoever or whatever God may be, it wasn't a punishment they were sentencing me to, but a chance to live a life with eyes wide open. I have a unique perspective and outlook on life that I could only have gained from experiencing what I have. Not one single aspect of my life has been unaffected by what happened to me. Life is challenging every single day. I deal with issues of pain and mobility, being low-income, and the looks and judgments passed by people who don't know anything about me. Sometimes, I think that if I had all the money in the world, I wouldn't have to deal with any of that. But, of course, I would. There will always be pain, and there will always be people who are ignorant. The only thing I can control is how I choose to deal with it. My perspective has a great deal to do with my level of peace with my life.

On December 30th, 2024, at 2:37 p.m., my life changed forever. My chosen sister sent a message to our family group chat informing us that our mother, Lexus Walker, was killed in a wrong-way accident in the Downtown Portsmouth tunnel. She had texted me fifteen minutes before the accident. I was with two of my other trans brothers when I found out. The sky became overcast. It was a dark day in Hampton Roads. You see, Lexy wasn't just a "gay mother" or a "chosen mother." Her essence was more significant than her big-boned body frame. She was the embodiment of forgiveness and resilience. She treated everyone in the community with more respect than she received. And she did so with a genuine smile, belly laughs, and "mama bear" hugs. When I struggled to find light and purpose, I asked her to be my mother in 2015. She stood by me, demonstrating what leading with love looked like. She accepted me unconditionally and loved me unapologetically. When I was hosting and planning events, she was there. Most importantly, she told me she loved me every chance she got followed up with, "Make me know it, baby!" Lexy's love for me softened my heart. When I became her child, I was her "last." Supposedly. Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
I think information about mental health has created such a bad stigma about it and people don't want to get help. But I decided to be honest about my struggles and because of that I have gained so much insight about myself and how people treat each other and mostly how I want to treat other people. It doesn't matter if someone is perfectly healthy mentally or if they are unstable they should be treated the same by people around them. Especially people who don't know them because they don't know how much they're affecting that person's day to day ability to be okay. When someone's mean to you it stays with you for a long time. So I try to be very very aware of how I'm behaving towards other people who may not have at all together at the time. And in the end it's allowed me to notice people who are treating me poorly or those who are treating me with kindness and I appreciate those people who treated me with kindness so much more because of that's it I know that they don't have to but they're choosing to. It makes a big difference in how I feel about myself.
