Hi! I'm a first-year student at Washington University in St. Louis with a passion for blending creativity and community impact. As a Korean American who grew up constantly moving between places and cultures, I’ve learned to adapt quickly. I love crafting personalized gifts for friends, making clothes for myself and those in need, and business management. I have started many entrepreneurship endeavors from baking to hand-made crafts that reflect my identity. I bring care, intention, and am a very hard worker in everything I do.
I’m pursuing my interests at the intersection of design and business. My goal is to someday start my own business with my personal designs. I want to create work that is both meaningful and innovative that will also help the underprivileged. I am deeply committed to equity, especially for immigrant communities and underrepresented voices, as a low-income immigrant myself. Scholarships that I receive will help me push these dreams into reality and help me fund for expensive tuition costs. It will allow me to keep pushing boundaries and give back to the people that shaped me.

I am my school's fairy godmother. In my diverse community, some students spend over $500 on prom dresses, while others can't afford one at all. While I've never faced that problem, sewing my own dress each year, my best friend was one of many. A few days before homecoming, she called, panicking about her cheaply-made $10 dress. Not wanting her high school dream to be ruined, I sewed her a last-minute dream dress.
This made me aware of how many students skip prom because they can't afford a dress. Milestones like prom, meant to be filled with joy and confidence, instead became sources of stress and exclusion from financial barriers. Without affordable, well-made clothing, many students were missing out on creating cherished memories or feeling like they belong in a community that celebrates diversity. I wanted to change that. I began reaching out to low-income friends, offering to fix or create clothes for them. Whether hemming a dress, repairing a hole, or making one from scratch, I ensured they had outfits they felt confident in.
Word spread quickly. Soon people from my school, church, and neighborhood called for help. I became known as the community's sewist. In three months, I had altered, hemmed, and fixed over fifty apparels, along with creating eight custom dresses. To further fund these efforts, I started a small business selling handmade items. I used the profit to invest in fabric and supplies for these projects, granting one student's dream at a time.
As demand grew, people asked for sewing lessons. I started leading weekly sewing workshops at my house to teach people how to design their own dresses. Still, recognizing I couldn't reach everyone on my own, I encouraged my school's fashion club to host a prom dress donation so students could access dresses for free.
When prom came around, my teacher shared that attendance had noticeably increased that year, no longer held back by the barrier of not having a dress. I realized then, it was less about making people dresses and more about giving them the confidence, happiness, and opportunity they deserved.
This experience shaped my sense of hope for the future—not just in what I can do, but in what we can do when we care for one another. Every stitch, every late night at my sewing machine, became a way to connect with others—to say, “You belong here, too.” It taught me that kindness isn’t always about grand gestures; sometimes it’s just about showing up with your time, your skills, or your hands.
Helping others feel seen and celebrated reminded me that change starts in the smallest places: living rooms turned into sewing studios, school clubs transformed into support systems, and prom nights made magical not by price tags but by people. Knowing I helped create a community where everyone could feel beautiful, I discovered my power to make change and the joy that comes from using my talents to serve others. This journey sparked my interest in design as a tool for social impact and gives me hope that, no matter where life takes me, I’ll carry forward this same spirit of connection and compassion—continuing to combine creativity and service to create inclusive spaces wherever I go.
