Video editing is an intersection between math and art. Mathematical precision is necessary to create a functional 3D element. Artistic style is necessary to transform the element into a visually pleasing work. Experimenting with 3D elements introduced me to complex three-dimensional planes in editing and combined my passion for mathematics and video editing. Over the years, my understanding and skills in video production improved. As the publicist for many clubs, I have had to explore unfamiliar ideas to appeal to attendees of the events. While searching for new, unique visual effects, three-dimensional elements in video editing sparked my interest as they required more than the standard coordinate inputs. I researched the basics and practiced my newfound skills in Adobe After Effects and realized that the 3D graphic on my screen required three coordinates to output visuals, just as a three-dimensional graph would. My experience exploring 3D graphics reminded me of how I felt when I began learning the art of video editing. I found joy in learning an unfamiliar concept that connected two of my greatest passions. By connecting seemingly unrelated things—such as math and video editing—I developed an unconventional understanding of a skill or topic. The overlaps between computing visual effects and animation and the coordinates I often used inside my Calculus classroom fascinated me. I believe I can present information in an appealing way and educate others. I aspire to use my skills to inform, teach, and create.Growing up as an Asian-American daughter with immigrant parents, they had the expectation and hope that I would be proficient in mathematics and science. Throughout my childhood, teenage years, and into young adulthood, my schoolwork reflected my skill and interest in mathematics. For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed working with numbers and exploring the field artistically and practically. With my prowess, I continue to explore the study of mathematics in college. I believe that partaking in a community in which I meet like-minded and different individuals alike will help me better understand myself and expand my knowledge.
