FinalistBio
Ani Young was born in New Orleans on March 10, 2008, after Hurricane Katrina, meaning she did not get to experience the world as her parents did. Even though they did sports, her parents’ generation were outside kids; the city was full of a whole bunch of black kids who were comfortable and knew each other well. Now, the only pastime she has is playing sports (track & field and tennis, if you’re curious). She lives in a city that is undergoing current gentrification and has a heavy police force that would arrest her for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It does not help that she is a radicalist. Ani looks up to icons like Angela Davis and Malcolm X while also attending protests at the governor's office for the Freedom of Palestine, the reintroduction of Gay rights, and she promotes anti-capitalist ideals. When she is not being a baby activist, she is attending ballet shows and watching musicals on illegal websites while crocheting bags and knitting sweaters. Ani loves the art of crafting and the promotion of human rights, and can’t wait to be more involved in her community so she can share her art and plans with them.
