My life goals are to own a successful sweet business and to achieve my dream job as a therapist. Both of these dreams reflect my passion for connecting with people whether it’s through bringing joy with my creations or helping others navigate life’s challenges.
Growing up, I didn’t have much, and that shaped my work ethic and resourcefulness. I helped my mom around the house from a young age, and by 12, I was taking care of myself in many ways. Since I couldn’t work, I would collect loose coins wherever I could find them, saving them in a bottle and cashing them in so I could have a little money of my own. My mom always did her best to support me, and I’m grateful for her example, which taught me resilience and determination.
I believe I’m a great candidate because of my drive, empathy, and strong sense of responsibility. My background has made me resourceful and hardworking, and I’m determined to achieve my goals not just for myself, but so I can inspire and support others as well.

Growing up in a single-parent household with three siblings taught me the importance of responsibility, empathy, and community at an early age. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for us, and I learned to appreciate every little thing we had. Since we didn’t have much, I became resourceful, I’d collect loose change in bottles and cash it in just to have some money of my own. That experience built my appreciation for hard work and shaped the person I am today: someone who values effort, kindness, and helping others feel seen and supported.
Throughout my life, I’ve been drawn to helping others, especially those who feel misunderstood or unheard. I know what it’s like to feel invisible. Growing up, I struggled with social anxiety and shyness, which made expressing myself difficult. Those experiences inspired my goal of becoming a therapist, someone who creates a safe, nonjudgmental space for others to talk, heal, and feel understood. I want to provide the support I once needed, helping people know that their feelings matter and that they’re not alone.
Community involvement has always been part of that mission. I’ve worked with younger students, offering encouragement and guidance, especially those struggling with confidence or fitting in. I also use my baking business to bring people together, whether I’m selling cupcakes or Kool-Aid pickles, I love seeing the joy my treats bring to others, so I often randomly make desserts just to gift out for free. In my current job at HEB, I continue to serve my community, learning valuable teamwork and leadership skills while making everyday connections with people.
Financially, I face challenges that make scholarships like this one incredibly meaningful. My family has always lived on a limited income, and while my mother has done everything possible to support us, higher education comes with costs that go beyond what we can afford. I’m currently earning both my high school diploma and associate degree, and I plan to continue on to earn my bachelor’s degree in therapy. I’m determined to make my goals a reality, but I need financial assistance to cover tuition, books, and living expenses. Every bit of support brings me closer to a future where I can give back through my career in mental health.
As someone who cares deeply about emotional safety, I also take the issue of bullying, both in person and online, very seriously. When working with children and youth, I focus on creating safe, judgment-free spaces where everyone feels valued. I make it a point to listen and to speak up when I see unkind behavior. Online, I promote kindness and awareness by sharing positive content and reminding others to think before they post or comment. I also encourage younger peers to talk to trusted adults if they ever experience cyberbullying or harassment. Everyone deserves to feel safe, whether they’re in a classroom or behind a screen.
I’ve learned that even small acts of compassion can make a big difference. Through my journey, from overcoming illness and social anxiety to working hard toward my education, I’ve realized that strength comes from caring for others and believing in yourself. I hope to continue spreading that message throughout my community and into my future career as a therapist.

Most middle schoolers worry about grades or fitting in, I worried about whether I would live to see another day. Sepsis was just a word I had never heard, until it nearly took my life. My name is Aniya Bell, and my life changed dramatically during seventh grade, when I experienced a severe case of COVID-19 that led to sepsis. At the time, I was just 12 years old, navigating school and adolescence like any other middle schooler. I had never imagined that an illness could take over my body so quickly, leaving me fighting for my life in ways I had never known.
It started subtly. I felt weak, tired, and disoriented, with a loss of taste and difficulty standing. My family noticed my decline and immediately called for medical help. I was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, and over the next few days, my condition worsened rapidly. I spent about two weeks in the hospital, including a week in the ICU on life support. During this time, I barely slept, was constantly monitored by doctors, and wore a breathing apparatus to help me survive. For 5 days, I could not eat and could only drink water.
Experiencing sepsis at such a young age was terrifying. I had to confront my vulnerability and the reality that my body could fail despite my willpower. Yet, even in those darkest moments, I felt the unwavering support of my family and the dedication of the medical staff. Their encouragement reminded me that I was not alone, even when my body felt like it was betraying me.
Recovering from sepsis was another challenge entirely. I had to relearn how to walk and take daily injections and medications. Over time, I regained strength and endurance. I was obsessed, waiting 270 pound and eventually losing 90 pounds and feeling healthier and more active than I had in years. This journey was not just physical, it reshaped my perspective on life, resilience, and self care.
Sepsis taught me lessons that extend far beyond medicine. I learned the importance of listening to my body, advocating for my health, and appreciating the support of loved ones. Most importantly, I discovered my own strength and ability to persevere through adversity. Today, I carry this experience with me as a reminder that even the most daunting challenges can foster growth, resilience, and gratitude.
Sharing my story allows me to raise awareness about sepsis and severe illness, encouraging others to recognize symptoms early and seek help. My experience shaped who I am today; someone who values health, resilience, and the power of support and it drives me to make the most of every day.
Leading Through Humanity & Heart Scholarship
Growing up in a single parent household with three siblings, I quickly learned the importance of responsibility, resilience, and compassion. By the age of twelve, I was helping my mother manage household responsibilities and caring for myself, while also beginning to explore entrepreneurial opportunities to support my family. These experiences taught me the value of resourcefulness, patience, and hard work.
My passion for human health and wellness stems from my own journey of feeling misunderstood and struggling to express myself. I realized that emotional support and understanding can be just as vital as physical care. Over time, helping others, whether mentoring younger students, offering guidance, or simply listening became deeply meaningful to me. These experiences shaped my desire to pursue a career in therapy, where I can provide a safe, non judgmental space for individuals to be heard and supported. I am committed to fostering wellbeing in a way that acknowledges both the challenges people face and their unique strengths, helping them thrive in mind, body, and spirit.
To me, empathy is the ability to genuinely understand and share in another person’s experiences and emotions. It requires active listening, awareness, and the willingness to connect on a human level. Unlike sympathy, which can feel distant, empathy demands engagement and presence, allowing one to see the person behind the struggle.
In therapy, empathy is essential because trust and connection form the foundation of effective care. When clients feel truly understood, they are more willing to open up, confront challenges, and embrace strategies for growth. Empathy allows a therapist to see beyond surface behaviors, recognize underlying needs, and respond with care that is both respectful and effective.
I strive to ensure my work is always human centered by prioritizing listening over judgment and valuing each person’s unique perspective. This includes practicing cultural sensitivity, reflecting on my own biases, and adapting my approach to meet the specific needs of every client. I aim to collaborate with clients, empowering them to be active participants in their own healing, while providing guidance that addresses both emotional and practical dimensions of wellbeing.
Ultimately, empathy is the bridge between professional expertise and genuine human connection. It allows me to create a space where individuals feel seen, heard, and valued, which is the cornerstone of effective therapy. By committing to empathetic, human-centered practice, I hope to make a lasting impact on the lives of those I serve, helping them find both understanding and empowerment.
Marcia Bick Scholarship
Growing up in a household with limited income, I quickly learned the value of responsibility and perseverance. By the age of 12, I was taking care of myself while also helping my mother manage household responsibilities. I discovered early on that life doesn’t always provide a smooth path, but determination and creativity can help overcome obstacles. For example, I saved loose coins in a bottle for small personal goals, learning the importance of resourcefulness and patience. These experiences shaped my work ethic, resilience, and desire to build a better future.
Students from disadvantaged backgrounds often face barriers that go beyond finances, including limited guidance, few educational resources, and minimal support networks. Despite these challenges, many motivated students possess talent, intelligence, and a strong drive to succeed, they simply need opportunities to realize their potential. Scholarships and grants provide more than financial aid; they offer validation, encouragement, and the chance to focus on growth rather than survival. Every student deserves the opportunity to pursue higher education and achieve their goals, regardless of the circumstances they were born into.
I have faced my own share of challenges, but I have worked hard to rise above them. In addition to managing personal responsibilities, I have sought ways to contribute to my community and develop skills that prepare me for college and a career in therapy. I enjoy helping younger students, sharing knowledge, and providing support to those who might struggle academically or emotionally. These experiences have strengthened my compassion, patience, and leadership qualities I know will help me succeed in higher education and beyond.
Receiving the Marcia Bick Scholarship would allow me to focus on my studies and fully dedicate myself to my career goals without the constant stress of financial burden. It would enable me to eventually become a therapist, a profession where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, especially those facing challenges similar to my own. This support would not only help me achieve my academic goals but also empower me to give back to my community, mentor others, and help students overcome obstacles just as I have.
I am motivated, hardworking, and committed to turning challenges into opportunities. With the support of this scholarship, I can continue to pursue my dreams and build a future where my potential is fully realized. I want to show that financial hardship does not define a person’s ability to succeed, and that determination, resilience, and compassion can transform obstacles into stepping stones toward success.

My inspiration to continue my education comes from both my personal experiences and my passion for helping others. Growing up, I learned the importance of perseverance and responsibility at a young age. I had to become independent and responsible, often helping my mother while she worked hard to provide for our family. Those experiences taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of pursuing opportunities that can create a bright future. Education is the path that will allow me to grow, achieve my goals, and helping others in meaningful ways.
What truly motivates me to keep to keep going is my dream of becoming a therapist. I have always been passionate about listening to others and being the source of support and encouragement. I know what it feels like to struggle, and I want to dedicate my career to making people feel seen, heard, and valued. This will give me the foundation I need to become a licensed professional and follow my passion for helping others.
This scholarship would play a very important role in helping me achieve these goals. It would ease the financial challenges of tuition and supplies, allowing me to focus fully on my studies and future career. Receiving this support would not only help me take steps towards becoming a therapist, but it would also serve as encouragement that my determination and commitment are leading me in the right direction. With this opportunity, I will be able to dedicate myself to learning, growing, and becoming the type of professional who can make a true difference in people’s lives.

I plan on using my education to pursue a career in therapy, where I can support people who are struggling and having a hard time to express their selves, giving them a safe and nonjudgmental space to heal and grow. I've always had a heart for helping others, and i want to use what I learn in college to provide guidance and encouragement for people who may not have anyone else to turn to. By gaining the skills and knowledge needed to be an effective therapist, I hope to make a difference in people lives while also contributing to healthier families and stronger communities.
Growing up, my family did not have a lot of financial resources, and i had to take on responsibilities at an early age. I began helping my mom at an early age, and by the time i was 12 years old, I was learning to take care of myself. Even though money was tight, i found creative way to make it happen. for example, I saved loose change that i found on the ground in a bottle until i had enough to cash in and use for my needs. My mom hard work and determination, and those experiences has inspired me to keep going and the importance of hard work.
These challenges inspired me to want to help others. I know what it feels like to go through hardship and still push forward, and i want to use that perspective in my career. My education will not only allow me to achieve my dreams of becoming a therapist, but it will also give me the chance to give back and to be there for others the way I wished someone could have been there for me. By overcoming adversity and pursing my passion, I plan to make the world a little better, one person at a time.
I also want my education to encourage young people to speak openly about their feelings without fear of judgment. Mental health struggles often begin early, and many teenagers do not know how to handle them or who to turn to. I want to create outreach opportunities that promote emotional wellness and remind people that they are not alone. My background has given me empathy, patience, and the ability to listen others. Education will give me the knowledge, but my personal experience will give me the heart and motivation to make a difference.

One of my favorite local community events that I have participated in is the community food drive. Every year, people gather to collect, sort, and distribute food to families that's in need. I became involved in this event a few years ago, I heard about helping volunteering from my pastor after and ever since it has become an experience that means a lot to me. Growing up in a household with limited income, I understand the challenges of not having much food. Knowing what it feels like to go without food makes this event even more significant. I know how much of a difference a simple box of cereal can make in someone’s life.
The food drive brings everyone together from all over to make sure that no one in our community goes hungry. Volunteers, local businesses, and donors all get together and collaborate to provide useful items such as canned goods, fresh produce, and household products to families that are struggling to help out with any challenges they're facing and to make ends meet. One of the most memorable moments for me was handing a food box to a mother who reminded me of my own, she was in a vehicle with 5 kids in the back. She thanked us with tears in her eyes, explaining how this would help her feed her children for the week. That moment I knew that I was there for a purpose. It made me feel proud to be a part of helping the community.
Although the food drive isn't about providing food it's also providing love and showing our community that we care. It's about letting families know that they are not alone in these situations and that we are here to support them. When I watched that lady drive away with her car full of kids, I felt that I was more excited than her because that had really made my day.
Since then, I've made it my business to volunteer at the food drive every year, and thanks to my pastor for telling me all about it. I've seen the impact it has on our community, and I've witnessed the difference that it has made in people's lives. To see how grateful people are leaving and driving off with smiles on their faces. It shows me that even the smallest act of kindness can affect and touch people's lives in ways that we never thought.
As I continue to be a part of this amazing community and event, I am always reminded of compassion. And I know that long as we continue to come together as a community and support each other, no one in our community will ever have to face hunger.
