My interest in technology did not come from a single perfect moment, it grew from curiosity, challenge, and the desire to understand how things work. One experience that truly sparked my passion happened when I first began exploring computer science in school. At the time, coding felt intimidating. The screen was filled with symbols and logic that did not immediately make sense. But instead of stepping back, I leaned in. I remember working on a small project where I had to create a simple program. After multiple failed attempts and errors, I finally got it to run correctly. That moment seeing something I built come to life changed everything for me. It showed me that technology is not just something we use, but something we can create, shape, and improve.
That experience taught me persistence. It showed me that failure is not the end, but part of the process. Every error message became a lesson, and every challenge became an opportunity to grow. This mindset has shaped my goals in a powerful way. I no longer see obstacles as barriers, but as steps toward success. Because of that, I am committed to pursuing a career in computer science, where I can continue learning, building, and solving problems that matter.

Mary Jane Chavez Memorial Scholarship
My family life and my Catholic faith have been the strongest forces encouraging me to pursue a college education. They have shaped how I see the world, how I respond to challenges, and how I understand my purpose beyond myself. Through prayer, perseverance, and example, my parents taught me that education is not just a personal achievement but a responsibility.
I was raised in a Catholic household where faith was not something we spoke about only on Sundays, it was lived daily. My mother prays constantly, especially in moments of uncertainty. Before my father passed away, he also prayed regularly and encouraged us to trust God even when life felt heavy or unclear. Watching my parents rely on prayer taught me that faith is not about having all the answers but about continuing forward with hope. That mindset has deeply influenced my decision to attend college. Higher education, to me, is an act of faith: believing that the hard work I put in now will prepare me to serve others later.
After my father’s death, my family faced emotional and financial challenges that could have made it easy to give up on long-term goals. Instead, my mother became my greatest example of strength. She carried our family through grief with faith, reminding me that God’s plans are often revealed through perseverance. Seeing her continue to pray, work, and encourage my education showed me that college is not just a dream, it is a way to honor the sacrifices my parents made for me.
My Catholic faith teaches that every person has a God-given purpose and that we are called to use our gifts in service of others. This belief motivates me to pursue college not only for personal success, but so I can give back to my community. Education equips me with the knowledge, discipline, and confidence to make a meaningful impact. Whether through leadership, service, or my future career, I want to be someone who uplifts others, just as my family and faith have uplifted me.
College also represents growth: intellectual, spiritual, and personal. My faith encourages me to seek wisdom, ask questions, and develop my talents fully. Catholic teachings emphasize the value of learning and moral responsibility, reminding me that education should strengthen both the mind and the heart. In college, I hope to deepen my understanding of the world while staying grounded in my values.
Ultimately, my family life and faith have taught me resilience, discipline, and purpose. My parents’ prayers, my mother’s unwavering belief, and my Catholic upbringing have all shaped my determination to succeed. Attending college is my way of honoring their sacrifices, trusting in God’s guidance, and preparing myself to contribute positively to society. It is not just a step toward a career, it is a continuation of the values my family instilled in me and a commitment to becoming the person God calls me to be.
Ella's Gift
Life has a way of testing people at moments when they least expect it. For me, one of the most difficult challenges I faced was losing my father at a young age. His passing changed everything for my family. My mother and I suddenly had to navigate life with grief, uncertainty, and responsibility that felt much heavier than before. That experience shaped my understanding of mental health, resilience, and the importance of having support during difficult times. Grief can deeply affect a person’s mental health. When my father passed away, my mother and I had to learn how to cope with the emotional weight of that loss. There were moments when everything felt overwhelming, but those experiences taught me how important it is to take care of one’s mental well-being. I learned that healing does not happen overnight. It requires patience, reflection, and the willingness to seek support from others. Moving to the United States with my mother brought both opportunities and new challenges. We had to adapt to a new country, a new culture, and a new education system while still processing the loss we had experienced. Starting over in a different environment was not easy, but it strengthened my determination to succeed. I realized that the hardships we faced could either hold me back or motivate me to grow stronger. I chose to let those experiences motivate me. Through these challenges, I developed a deeper awareness of how mental health struggles can impact people, especially young individuals who are trying to find their path in life. I have seen how stress, grief, and lack of support can lead people toward unhealthy coping mechanisms, including substance abuse. This understanding has motivated me to focus on maintaining a healthy mindset and making choices that support my well-being and future goals. My personal growth has been shaped by resilience and the support of my mother, teachers, and community. I have learned the importance of discipline, staying focused on my goals, and surrounding myself with positive influences. Activities in school and my community have helped me stay engaged and develop leadership skills while reminding me that I am capable of overcoming obstacles. Education has always been a central part of my journey forward. I plan to study computer science and engineering in college because I am passionate about technology and the opportunities it creates. Technology has the power to change lives, improve communities, and solve real-world problems. My goal is to build a career in the technology industry where I can contribute to innovation while also creating opportunities for others. Continuing to manage my personal growth and mental well-being will remain a priority as I move forward. I plan to do this by maintaining healthy routines, seeking mentorship and guidance, and staying connected to supportive communities. I also believe in the importance of open conversations about mental health, because talking about challenges can help people realize they are not alone. My experiences have taught me that difficult moments can shape a person’s strength and purpose. Losing my father and adapting to life in a new country were not easy experiences, but they helped me develop resilience, empathy, and determination. These lessons will continue to guide me as I pursue higher education and work toward a future where I can make a meaningful impact. Receiving this scholarship would not only support my educational journey but also help me continue building a life defined by perseverance, growth, and opportunity. I am committed to using my experiences to motivate myself and inspire others who may also be overcoming challenges in their own lives.
Maggie's Way- International Woman’s Scholarship
Malgorzata “Maggie” Kwiecień’s story reflects the quiet strength it takes to navigate life when circumstances force you to grow up faster than expected. Her challenges—adjusting to a new environment, carrying responsibility beyond her years, and learning how to remain hopeful despite uncertainty—are struggles I deeply relate to. Like Maggie, I have faced moments where life demanded resilience before I felt ready, and where perseverance became less of a choice and more of a necessity.
One of the challenges Maggie faces is adapting to unfamiliar surroundings while holding onto her identity. Whether it is cultural displacement, emotional isolation, or the pressure to fit in, Maggie must learn how to survive in a space that does not always understand her. I relate to this because I, too, have experienced situations where I felt out of place—where I had to adjust quickly while still staying true to who I am. In those moments, I learned that adaptation does not mean erasing yourself; it means learning how to grow without losing your core values, something Maggie exemplifies throughout her journey.
Maggie also carries emotional weight quietly. She does not always have the freedom to express her fears or frustrations openly, and instead internalizes much of her struggle. This is another way I see myself in her. I often take on responsibilities without voicing how heavy they feel, believing that strength means enduring in silence. Like Maggie, I have learned that resilience sometimes looks like continuing forward even when no one notices how hard it is.
Another strong connection I share with Maggie is her determination to persevere despite uncertainty. Her life is shaped by factors outside her control, yet she does not allow those limitations to define her future. Similarly, I have faced personal challenges that could have easily discouraged me, but instead motivated me to work harder and aim higher. Maggie’s persistence reminds me that adversity does not eliminate possibility—it refines it. Through struggle, both she and I develop clarity, focus, and a deeper understanding of what truly matters.
Maggie’s strength also lies in her hope. Even when circumstances are difficult, she holds onto the belief that change is possible. This hope is not naïve; it is earned through endurance. I see myself in this aspect of her character because hope has been essential in my own life. During challenging periods, hope became the force that kept me moving forward, reminding me that my present circumstances did not determine my ultimate destination.
In many ways, Maggie represents the kind of strength that is often overlooked—the strength of endurance, adaptability, and quiet courage. I relate to her because her challenges mirror my own experiences of navigating responsibility, uncertainty, and self-discovery. Like Maggie, I continue to grow through adversity, learning that resilience is not about avoiding hardship, but about emerging from it with greater purpose and confidence. Her story affirms that even in the face of difficulty, it is possible to remain hopeful, determined, and true to oneself.

Losing my dad was one of the most difficult moments of my life, and it tested me in ways I had never imagined. His passing left a void in my family and in my heart, and suddenly, life felt uncertain. Beyond the grief, our household faced new challenges; my mom had to provide for us on her own, and I had to take on responsibilities I wasn’t fully prepared for. At times, it felt overwhelming, and I wondered how I could continue moving forward without the guidance and support of the person I had always relied on.
During this time, my faith became my anchor. I leaned on prayer, reflection, and my belief that there is a purpose behind every trial, even if it is not immediately clear. Faith gave me the strength to face each day with courage, to manage my responsibilities at home and school, and to find hope in moments of despair. It reminded me that even when life feels unfair, I am never truly alone, and that resilience is built through both struggle and trust in something greater than myself.
One of the ways my faith helped me was by teaching me patience and perspective. I realized that grieving does not mean giving up, and that honoring my dad’s memory meant working hard, making wise choices, and striving to create a future he would be proud of. My faith guided me to focus on what I could control, my attitude, my effort, and the ways I could contribute to my family and community, rather than dwelling on what I could not change. It also encouraged me to seek out support from others, to share my burdens, and to offer encouragement to those around me who were also struggling.
Through this experience, I learned that faith is not just a source of comfort, but a source of action. It inspired me to persevere academically, to take on leadership opportunities, and to serve my community, knowing that my experiences could help others facing challenges of their own. Losing my dad strengthened my empathy, resilience, and determination, and faith allowed me to channel those qualities into positive action rather than despair.
Today, I carry the lessons of that loss and the support of my faith with me. I understand that life’s obstacles can be overwhelming, but that perseverance, hope, and trust can guide me through even the most difficult moments. My faith helped me turn grief into motivation, fear into courage, and loss into a commitment to honor my dad’s memory through hard work, service, and determination. While his passing will always be a part of my story, it is also a source of strength that continues to inspire me to grow, serve, and make a meaningful impact in the world.

I do not see my background as a limitation, but as the foundation for creating meaningful, lasting change in the world.
Emerging Leaders in STEM Scholarship
My interest in Computer Science and Engineering comes from a desire to understand how things work, and how they can work better for people. Technology is no longer just a tool; it shapes how we learn, communicate, and solve problems. Growing up in a world increasingly driven by technology, I became curious about what happens behind the screen. I wanted to move from being a user of technology to a creator, someone who designs systems that are efficient, ethical, and accessible.
Computer science and engineering appeal to me because they combine logic, creativity, and real-world impact. Writing code is like problem-solving in its purest form: identifying an issue, breaking it down, and building a solution step by step. Engineering takes that logic and applies it at scale, transforming ideas into systems that people rely on every day. What excites me most is that technology has the power to either widen gaps or close them; and I want to be on the side that closes them.
The impact I hope to make through this field is centered on accessibility, equity, and innovation. I am especially interested in how technology can be used to support underserved communities, improve education, and create opportunities for those who are often overlooked. Whether that means developing software that increases access to learning resources, designing systems that are inclusive by default, or contributing to ethical and responsible tech development, my goal is to build solutions that serve people, not just profit.
I also hope to increase representation in STEM fields. Seeing who is missing from tech spaces matters. When young people do not see themselves reflected in engineering or computer science, it can feel like those spaces are not meant for them. I want to be part of the change that proves otherwise, by mentoring, leading, and creating pathways for others to enter and thrive in technology.
My journey toward this field has not been without adversity. I have faced moments of self-doubt, limited resources, and the pressure of navigating spaces where I felt I had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously. Learning complex technical concepts while balancing responsibilities outside of school required discipline and persistence. There were times when failure felt discouraging, but those moments taught me something more valuable than success ever could: how to adapt, learn, and keep going.
I have also learned to challenge assumptions, both from others and from myself. Being underestimated pushed me to sharpen my skills and speak with confidence. Each challenge strengthened my resilience and reinforced my belief that growth comes from discomfort. Engineering, after all, is about iteration: testing, failing, and improving. I approach life the same way.
These experiences have shaped how I view technology and my role in it. They remind me that behind every line of code is a human being who will be affected by its outcome. That awareness drives my commitment to responsible and thoughtful engineering. I want to build systems that are reliable, secure, and designed with empathy.
Studying Computer Science and Engineering is more than an academic goal, it is a commitment to using knowledge as a tool for change. With the skills gained through this field, I hope to contribute to innovations that improve lives, expand opportunity, and create a more inclusive future in technology.

The loss of my father was one of the most defining moments of my life. His passing created a void that no words can fully describe. Overnight, my world shifted, and I was forced to confront grief at an age when life was supposed to feel simpler. Losing him did not just mean losing a parent; it meant losing a source of stability, guidance, and protection. The pain was overwhelming, and it arrived alongside responsibilities and challenges I was not prepared for.
Grief introduced me to a range of emotions I had never experienced so deeply before: sadness, anger, fear, and confusion. There were moments when I felt numb and others when the pain felt unbearable. I struggled with the feeling that life was unfair, and at times, I felt alone even when surrounded by people who cared about me. Shortly after my father’s passing, I began experiencing seizures, which added another layer of fear and vulnerability to an already difficult period. It felt as though my body was carrying the weight of grief in ways I did not yet understand.
Through this experience, I learned that I am stronger than I ever imagined. I learned how to take care of myself emotionally and physically, even when I did not feel ready. I learned that strength does not mean ignoring pain, it means continuing forward while carrying it. Over time, I discovered resilience within myself, shaped by loss but not defeated by it.
Meditation and journaling became important tools in my healing process. Journaling gave me a safe space to express emotions I struggled to say out loud. Writing allowed me to release my thoughts, fears, and questions without judgment. Meditation helped me ground myself during moments of anxiety and emotional overload. It taught me how to sit with my feelings instead of running from them, and it helped me find moments of calm in the chaos. Together, these practices gave me clarity, emotional balance, and a deeper understanding of myself.
I want to go to college because education represents possibility, stability, and purpose. College is not just a goal for me; it is a pathway to building a future that honors both my struggles and my dreams. I want to continue my education so I can gain knowledge, independence, and the ability to create opportunities not only for myself, but also for my family. Education gives me hope that my past does not limit my future and that I can turn hardship into motivation.
The biggest influences in my life are my mother and the memory of my father. My mother’s strength, sacrifices, and perseverance continue to inspire me every day. Watching her carry responsibilities with grace has taught me the value of resilience and hard work. My father, though no longer physically present, remains a guiding influence through the lessons he taught me about kindness, determination, and believing in myself. I am also inspired by individuals who have overcome adversity and used their stories to uplift others, people who remind me that hardship can be transformed into purpose. Losing my father changed me forever, but it also shaped who I am becoming. It taught me empathy, resilience, and self-awareness. While grief will always be a part of my story, it does not define the limits of my future. Instead, it fuels my determination to grow, to learn, and to pursue my education with purpose and gratitude.

In the future, I want to not only succeed in the field of computer science but also inspire others with medical challenges to believe that their conditions do not define them. What defines us is how we respond, grow, and rise above. Asthma may have taken my breath at times, but it will never take my determination.
Living with asthma has shaped my life in ways that go far beyond physical health. It has taught me patience, resilience, and the value of adapting when things don’t go as planned. Growing up, I often felt like my own body was holding me back from enjoying the simple things that made others happy running outside, playing sports, or even laughing too hard without wheezing for air. Something as ordinary as a cold day or dusty classroom could trigger an asthma attack. Those moments made me feel small, scared, and helpless, especially when I wanted nothing more than to live freely like everyone else.
There were times when asthma felt like an invisible wall between me and the world I wanted to experience. I missed out on field trips, after-school activities, and sometimes even class because of hospital visits or breathing treatments. What hurt most wasn’t just the physical limitation, but the emotional toll of constantly worrying what if I can’t breathe again? That fear followed me for years. But eventually, I realized that while asthma can control my lungs, it doesn’t have to control my life.
Instead of letting fear define me, I began to channel that energy into what I could control my mind and my goals. I became more curious, especially about how things work. When I wasn’t able to be outside, I spent time learning about computers, coding, and technology. I loved how computers could process complex problems and create something amazing out of simple lines of code. It felt empowering to build something that wasn’t limited by physical strength. Technology became my safe space, my way of expressing creativity and capability.
Asthma also made me more determined to push through challenges. Every time I overcome an asthma attack, it feels like winning a small battle against something bigger than myself. That mindset has carried over into my education and ambitions. I want to become a computer scientist, engineer, and data analyst who uses technology to solve problems, analyze systems, and make life easier for others. I’m especially interested in using data to improve healthcare systems, because I understand firsthand how important it is to have accurate, accessible medical information for people living with chronic conditions.
My medical challenges have taught me empathy, discipline, and persistence. They’ve shown me that limitations can become strengths if you learn from them. While I may never live completely without asthma, I can live fully with it by embracing what I can do, working hard toward my goals, and using my story as motivation to never give up.
