For me, the journey to nursing is about more than just a career—it's about changing a narrative. As a Black woman raised by strong Black women, I've seen firsthand how our compassion and strength can be overlooked and judged before we are even given a chance. I am a mother to a seven-year-old son, and my deepest motivation is to show him that empathy and caring for others are not just positive traits, but powerful tools for change. I want him to witness a Black woman, his mother, thriving as a compassionate and respected healthcare professional, and to know that a career dedicated to service is one of the most noble paths he can choose. This desire to make a difference is what drew me to the nursing profession. I empathize deeply with people and feel a strong calling to help those who may not be physically or mentally able to help themselves. When I care for patients, I do so as if they were my own family. This perspective has guided my approach through my diverse career, which includes more than nine years of experience in oncology and four years in labor and delivery. These opportunities have given me not only a robust set of technical skills but also a deep understanding of compassion, resilience, and advocacy. In oncology, I learned the immense value of providing comfort and a steady presence during uncertain times, while in labor and delivery, I have experienced the profound joy and responsibility of bringing new life into the world. These varied experiences have confirmed that I am on the right path and have fueled my passion for continuing to grow in this field. While these specialties may seem different, they share a common thread: they both allow me to support patients and families through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. This understanding is what makes me so passionate about joining the small percentage of Black female nurses. My presence in a clinical setting is an act of advocacy. It tells patients from similar backgrounds that their experiences are valid, their fears are understood, and their health is a priority. I believe my unique perspective will allow me to build trust in communities that have historically been underserved by the healthcare system, and in doing so, I can work to close the health equity gap from the ground up. As I look to the future, I see myself as both a clinician and a leader. By furthering my education, I plan to become a powerful advocate for both my patients and future generations of nurses. My goal is to use my voice and my position to mentor and inspire others, showing my son and other young Black children that they belong in the medical field. I believe that by continuing my education and advancing my career, I can help pave the way for a more diverse, empathetic, and equitable healthcare system for everyone. It is my firm belief that a more representative workforce is the key to creating a healthier, more trusting, and ultimately, a more compassionate world.

Growing up with a single mother, I quickly learned how to be independent, resilient, and resourceful. We faced many financial hardships, and there were times when making ends meet felt nearly impossible. Those experiences taught me strength and perseverance, but they also helped shape who I am today—someone who is deeply empathetic and driven to help others. From a young age, I found myself drawn to people in need. I’ve always had a strong emotional connection to those who are vulnerable or hurting, and I feel a natural responsibility to care for them. That sense of calling is what led me to pursue a career in healthcare. Today, I work at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where I interact with patients coming in for chemotherapy. For many of them, we are the familiar faces they see each visit—we are their support system. I do my best to make every interaction meaningful, to provide comfort and reassurance in a place that can feel frightening. Being part of their journey, even in a small way, is incredibly rewarding. Now, I am taking the next step in my journey by attending nursing school four days a week. This has been one of the most difficult, yet fulfilling, transitions in my life. As a mother to a young child, balancing school, parenting, and full-time responsibilities has pushed me to new limits. Returning to school as an adult with bills to pay and a child to raise is not easy. There are days when I feel overwhelmed, but I remain focused on my goal—because I know this is my purpose. Recently, I have also had to cope with the grief of losing two aunts within six months—one to leukemia and the other to a tragic car accident. These personal losses have been incredibly painful, but they’ve also reinforced my commitment to becoming a nurse. I want to honor their memory by dedicating my life to helping others, especially those who are facing life-threatening illnesses or traumatic situations. Despite all the obstacles—financial struggles, personal loss, and the daily balancing act of motherhood and education—I have never wavered in my desire to care for others. Earning this scholarship would not only lighten the financial burden, but it would also be an investment in someone who is passionate, dedicated, and determined to make a difference in the lives of others through nursing. I am determined to see this through to build a better future for my son and myself.

Continuing my education has been a deeply personal and determined journey. As a mother to a 7-year-old boy, my greatest motivation has always been to create a better life for him—one filled with opportunity, security, and inspiration. I want to be someone he can look up to, someone who shows him that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible. Nursing school has not been easy. Balancing the rigorous demands of my studies with the responsibilities of motherhood has tested me in every way. There have been long nights, early mornings, and moments of exhaustion and doubt. But through it all, my son has been my driving force. He’s the reason I keep going, even when it’s hard. I want him to see the value of education, the strength in persistence, and the importance of caring for others. From a young age, I’ve always been empathic and naturally drawn to helping people. That’s why nursing felt like a calling, not just a career. I’ve seen how powerful compassion and care can be in someone’s hardest moments. I want to be that kind of support for others, to make a difference in the lives of my patients and their families. Nursing combines my heart for service with a profession that will allow me to grow, provide, and give back. The sacrifices I’ve had to make have been incredibly difficult. I often spend long days in class or clinicals and come home to short nights of parenting, studying, and trying to be present for my son. Missing milestones, bedtime stories, or after-school conversations has been heartbreaking at times. But I keep reminding myself that this is temporary, and that I’m building something better for both of us. I want him to grow up knowing that sacrifices are sometimes necessary to achieve big goals—and that he's always been worth every one of them. I’m now just one semester away from completing my nursing program, and I couldn’t be more proud of how far I’ve come. This scholarship would make a meaningful difference in helping me reach the finish line. It would relieve some of the financial pressure I’m facing and allow me to dedicate more time and energy to excelling in my final semester. I want to use my journey to inspire my son and others who may be facing similar struggles. I want people to know that being a parent doesn't mean you have to give up on your dreams. In fact, it can be the very reason to chase them even harder. With this scholarship, I’ll be one step closer to a stable, fulfilling career in nursing—and one step closer to showing my son that with faith, focus, and effort, we can overcome anything.

The loss of my aunt in October 2024 was a heart-wrenching reminder of the devastating effects that substance abuse can have on individuals and families. My aunt's passing was not just the result of a physical accident; it was the culmination of years of struggling with cognitive impairments, an abusive relationship, and the grip of addiction. She was hit by a car that she didn’t see coming—her impairment, a consequence of substance abuse, clouded her judgment and left her vulnerable in a way that ultimately cost her life. Growing up, I witnessed my aunt’s gradual decline. As a child, I didn’t fully understand what was happening, but I saw the signs: the bruises from an abusive relationship, the emotional toll, and the slow diminishing of the vibrant woman I once knew. It hurt to watch someone I loved be trapped in a cycle of violence and addiction, unable to escape the grip of her circumstances. The hardest part was feeling powerless, knowing I couldn’t help her break free from the chains that kept her in such a dark place. Her passing in such a tragic way was a devastating blow, but it also ignited in me a deep desire to be a part of the solution for others who are suffering from similar struggles. One of my primary goals is to improve the care coordination and communication among healthcare professionals when it comes to patients facing these dual challenges. Too often, individuals suffering from domestic violence or substance abuse fall through the cracks of the healthcare system because their needs are not addressed holistically. I plan to work within multidisciplinary teams—social workers, psychologists, nurses, and physicians—to ensure that these women receive comprehensive care. I believe that by building strong, supportive communication networks, we can improve health outcomes and help women like my aunt heal, recover, and regain control of their lives. Additionally, I aim to bring more awareness and resources to African American communities, where domestic violence and substance abuse are often underreported or misunderstood. Cultural competence in healthcare is vital, especially when treating marginalized communities. I want to advocate for culturally sensitive programs that address the unique challenges African American women face, from generational trauma to societal pressures. Through outreach and education, I hope to empower these women to seek help and support without fear of judgment or stigma. My aunt’s story will always be with me, but I refuse to let her tragedy define my future. I am committed to using my education, compassion, and skills to help African American women overcome the obstacles that once seemed insurmountable. With this scholarship, I will be one step closer to realizing this vision and making a meaningful impact on the lives of those who need it most. I found this scholarship on bold.org.

One of the most urgent and deeply personal health issues I care about is mental health. It is a national and global crisis that affects people of all backgrounds, ages, and walks of life. Yet for too long, it has been misunderstood, stigmatized, and overlooked. As someone who believes in the power of compassionate care, I am passionate about advocating for better mental health support, education, and resources—especially for those in communities that have historically lacked access. The COVID-19 pandemic made the mental health crisis impossible to ignore. During the pandemic, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues doubled worldwide. Isolation, grief, fear, and economic hardship pushed people to their limits. But even before the pandemic, mental health challenges were already on the rise. Today, suicide rates are increasing at alarming levels, and the most heartbreaking part is that the affected population is getting younger and younger. Children and teenagers are struggling silently, often without the tools or support they need. I care about this issue because I’ve seen how mental health can impact every aspect of a person’s life. If someone cannot care for their own mental and emotional well-being, it becomes harder to maintain physical health, build relationships, or even get through the day. Mental health is just as important as physical health—yet it's not always treated that way. Many people suffer in silence out of fear of being judged, misunderstood, or dismissed. As a future nurse, I want to be someone who listens, validates, and advocates for mental health in every setting I work in. Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients, and we have the unique opportunity to notice when someone may be struggling internally, even if there are no physical signs. I want to use that position to help people feel safe talking about what they’re going through and connect them with the help they need. Mental health must also be addressed at the community level. I want to help develop programs that bring mental health awareness and resources to schools, neighborhoods, and underserved areas—especially in Black and brown communities where stigma and lack of access are major barriers. I want young people to know it’s okay to not be okay and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. This issue is personal, but it’s also universal. We are all human. We all struggle. And we all deserve to have our mental health cared for with the same seriousness and urgency as any other medical condition. By becoming a nurse and a mental health advocate, I hope to be part of a new generation of healthcare workers who see the whole person—not just their symptoms. This scholarship would support my journey to make mental health care more visible, more compassionate, and more accessible for everyone, especially the most vulnerable. I’m ready to be part of the change.

As a Black woman, I have experienced firsthand the disparities that exist in our healthcare system—disparities that often leave people who look like me feeling unseen, unheard, and misunderstood. These experiences are not isolated; they are part of a broader, systemic issue that continues to affect the health outcomes of African American communities. It is this lived reality, combined with my passion for helping others, that fuels my desire to become a nurse. I am determined to be a part of the solution—to bring compassion, representation, and advocacy into healthcare spaces that have historically lacked both inclusivity and equity. Growing up in the inner city, I have witnessed how healthcare inequity shaped the lives of people around me. Many families avoided seeking care due to fear, mistrust, or previous negative experiences. As a child, I didn’t understand why this was happening. But as I grew older, I began to recognize the deep-rooted issues that contribute to these disparities—lack of access, cultural bias, and systemic racism. I realized that for many African American women, the simple act of walking into a healthcare facility can be fraught with anxiety and fear of judgment. Too often, our pain is dismissed, our concerns are minimized, and our voices are silenced. This is why I want to become a nurse—not just to treat symptoms, but to make a real difference in the lives of my patients by fostering a sense of trust, safety, and belonging. Representation matters. When young Black girls and women see someone who looks like them in a position of care, it creates a powerful sense of comfort and validation. I want to be that presence. I want to be the nurse who listens without judgment, who advocates for patients who feel ignored, and who ensures that every person I care for feels valued and respected. Healthcare should be a place of healing for everyone. My journey to becoming a nurse is about more than a career—it’s about building a bridge between care and community. It’s about making sure no one feels like they have to suffer in silence. It’s about reminding every Black woman and girl that their health matters, their stories matter, and they matter. With this scholarship, I will be one step closer to making that vision a reality. I am ready to be the change I want to see—and to help heal the system from the inside out

Coming from a single-parent household with limited financial resources, I have had to navigate a challenging environment where educational opportunities were scarce. Despite these challenges, I have always been determined to make a better life for myself, and now as a mother, that drive has only intensified. One of the biggest obstacles I have faced in pursuing my goals is the lack of financial support for my education. However, these resources have often been limited, making it difficult for me to afford the costs associated with pursuing a degree in nursing. This scholarship would not only provide me with the financial support I need but also help level the playing field by giving me access to resources and opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach. Moreover, as a mother, I face the added challenge of balancing my responsibilities at home with my academic pursuits. Juggling work, childcare, and school can be overwhelming at times, and it often feels like I am stretched thin trying to meet all of my obligations. This scholarship would not only alleviate some of the financial burdens, allowing me to focus more on my studies but also provide me with the support and encouragement I need to continue pursuing my goals. With this scholarship, I would be able to dedicate more time and energy to my education, ultimately leading to a brighter future for myself and my family. In conclusion, the obstacles and challenges I have faced in my life have made it difficult for me to reach my goals, but they have also made me stronger and more determined to succeed. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and look forward to the ways in which it will help me reach my full potential.

Growing up with a single mother has shaped me in ways that I am truly grateful for. My mother divorced my father when I was only six years old, leaving her to raise three young children on her own. Despite the financial hardships that came with being a single parent, my mother never let it show. She worked tirelessly to provide for us and made sure that we never felt like we were lacking anything. Her strength and resilience have been an inspiration to me, and I credit her for molding me into the independent woman that I am today. From a historical perspective, the role of single mothers in society has evolved over time. In the past, single mothers were often stigmatized and faced discrimination. However, in recent years, there has been a shift in societal attitudes towards single mothers, with greater recognition of the challenges they face and the strength it takes to raise children on their own. Growing up with a single mother has had both positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, I learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and resilience from my mother. She taught me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to, regardless of the obstacles in my way. I developed a strong sense of independence and self-reliance, which has served me well in both my personal and professional life. On the negative side, there were times when I wished for a traditional family structure with both parents present. I missed having a father figure in my life and I longed for the stability and security that a two-parent household can provide. However, looking back, I realize that my mother more than made up for this absence with her unwavering love and support. Regarding future developments related to single motherhood, it is important to continue to support and uplift single mothers in our society. This includes providing resources and services to help them navigate the challenges of parenting on their own, as well as promoting policies that support working mothers and ensure they have access to affordable childcare and other forms of support. In conclusion, growing up with a single mother has been a defining experience in my life. My mother's strength, resilience, and love have shaped me into the person I am today, and I am forever grateful for her influence. While there have been challenges along the way, I believe that being raised by a single mother has made me stronger, more independent, and more determined to succeed. I hope that society continues to recognize and support single mothers, as they play a vital role in shaping the next generation of empowered individuals.

My aunt's struggle with drug addiction cast a long shadow over our family, touching each of us in different ways. For me, the fallout was most pronounced in my relationships with my cousins, her daughters. Growing up, I watched as addiction ravaged their lives, creating a rift between us that would take years to bridge. I remember the arguments, the tension that seemed to crackle in the air whenever we were together. My cousins were angry and hurt, lashing out at the world for their mother's failures. I was confused and scared, unsure of how to navigate the minefield of their emotions. We were all suffering, but in different ways, and that suffering drove us apart. The disappearances were the hardest. My aunt would vanish for days at a time, leaving her daughters alone and adrift. I'd see the fear in their eyes, the desperate hope that this time would be different, that this time she'd come back sober and stay. But she never did. And each time she disappeared, my cousins withdrew a little further into themselves, building walls around their hearts to protect themselves from the pain. The stealing was a betrayal, a harsh reminder that even those we love can hurt us the most. My aunt took more than just money or possessions from her daughters. She stole their childhood, their sense of security, their faith in the world. And as I watched, helpless and angry, those losses spilled over into our relationships, creating a chasm between us that seemed insurmountable. But even in the darkest times, there was love. A fierce, unbreakable bond that tied us together, aunt and cousins and me. We were each other's reminder that we were not alone, that no matter how broken our family seemed, there were still threads of connection that held us fast. And slowly, those threads began to weave a new tapestry. My aunt found recovery, a hard-won battle that showed us all what strength looked like. Her daughters began to heal, to let go of some of the anger and hurt, to tentatively trust again. And I learned to be present, to offer not solutions but a steady presence, a reminder that I was there, always. Recovery is not a straight line, but a winding path, full of setbacks and triumphs. There are still hard days, days when the old wounds ache and the distance between us feels vast. But there is also love, a deep well of it, forged in the fire of our shared experiences. My cousins are not just my family, but my friends, my sisters in every way that counts. And as I look at the women they've become, strong and resilient and full of light, I know that we are more than the sum of our past. We are a testament to the power of love, to the human capacity to heal and grow and thrive, no matter what life brings.

I grew up with a single mom who I have seen work hard all her life. She sacrificed a lot and made sure to give me and my brothers a nice childhood. She has always been my inspiration and I would do anything to make her proud. As I got older I realized everything she has done for me and now that I am a mom I would like a chance to start a career to give my child a better life. Not just financially but mentally. I like the flexibility of being able to be there for my son. As a mother who works over 40 hours, it is hard to prioritize your time. I hope I get the chance to finish school and to other people and my family. Being a working mother is undoubtedly a juggling act, constantly balancing the demands of work, education, and the responsibilities of motherhood. However, as if this challenge wasn't already a delicate equilibrium, the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic brought forth unprecedented obstacles. With the sudden closure of daycares and the shift to remote work and schooling, the struggles faced by working moms multiplied exponentially. This essay will delve into the hardships faced by a working mother, like myself, in attempting to navigate this intricate tapestry amidst the challenges posed by COVID-19. As a working mother with a young child, maintaining a semblance of order and efficiency has always been crucial. Hard enough as it is, finding the perfect balance between professional commitments and family life was thrown into disarray with the onset of the pandemic. Suddenly, the boundaries between work, school, and motherhood blurred, merging into an overwhelming amalgamation. As our homes transformed into classrooms and office spaces simultaneously, the once-clear divide was vanquished. With no escape from the demands of each role, forging a new routine emerged as a daunting challenge. My experience as a mother working towards a college degree has been one of immense growth and self-discovery. As I immersed myself in my studies, I found that the knowledge I gained seeped into every aspect of my life. Suddenly, I became a walking encyclopedia of facts, always eager to teach my children new things and broaden their horizons. Through my own educational pursuit, I was able to instill a love for learning within my family, creating an environment where education was not simply a requirement, but a lifelong passion.
