I have chosen to pursue a degree in psychology because I am driven by a deep curiosity about how people think, feel, and behave, and an even stronger desire to use that understanding to make a meaningful difference in others’ lives. Psychology is not just an academic interest for me; it is a pathway toward helping individuals navigate challenges, overcome adversity, and build healthier, more fulfilling futures. Through this field, I hope to combine knowledge, empathy, and determination to create lasting impact in both individual lives and broader communities.
One of my primary goals is to work directly with individuals who are struggling with mental health challenges. Whether through counseling, therapy, or clinical practice, I want to be someone who people can turn to in moments of vulnerability. Mental health is often overlooked or stigmatized, yet it plays a critical role in every aspect of a person’s life, from relationships to education to career success. I want to help break down that stigma by providing support that is compassionate, informed, and empowering. I believe that even small interventions, listening without judgment, offering guidance, or helping someone reframe their thoughts, can create powerful change.
In addition to working one-on-one with individuals, I hope to contribute to larger conversations about mental health awareness and accessibility. Too many people lack the resources they need to receive proper care, whether due to financial barriers, cultural stigma, or limited availability of services. With my degree, I want to advocate for better access to mental health support, particularly in underserved communities. This could involve community outreach, educational programs, or even policy work aimed at improving mental health systems. My ambition is not only to help individuals but also to be part of a movement that makes psychological care more inclusive and widely available.
I am especially interested in understanding how early experiences, environment, and social pressures shape a person’s sense of self. Many individuals struggle silently due to internalized beliefs, trauma, or societal expectations. By studying psychology, I will gain the tools to better understand these influences and help others challenge negative patterns. I want to empower people to see their own worth, develop resilience, and realize that their circumstances do not define their potential.
Choosing psychology also reflects my personal strengths, my ability to listen, my empathy for others, and my determination to grow both intellectually and emotionally. I am not afraid of challenges; in fact, I see them as opportunities to become stronger and more capable. This field requires patience, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence, all of which I am committed to developing further. I understand that the journey will be demanding, but I am prepared to put in the work because I believe in the purpose behind it.
Ultimately, my goal is to build a career that blends knowledge with compassion. I want to be a source of guidance and strength for others while continuing to learn and evolve myself. Psychology offers me the chance to turn my passion into action, and I am determined to use my education to create positive, lasting change in the lives of others.
Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
Education has played a major role in shaping my goal of pursuing psychology by helping me better understand both myself and the people around me. Throughout my time in school, I’ve been exposed to different subjects, ideas, and perspectives, but the experiences that impacted me the most were the ones that focused on human behavior, emotions, and personal struggles. In classes like English, I learned how to analyze characters, interpret their motivations, and recognize the deeper meanings behind their actions. This made me realize that people are much more complex than they appear on the surface. Everyone has a story, and every action is influenced by thoughts, experiences, and emotions that are not always visible. This realization sparked my curiosity about why people think and behave the way they do, which ultimately led me to develop a strong interest in psychology.
As I continued my education, I began to notice how mental and emotional challenges can directly affect a student’s ability to succeed in school. There were times when I personally struggled with motivation, stress, or self-doubt, and those moments made it harder to stay focused and perform at my best. School can be a place of growth, but it can also be a source of pressure. Balancing assignments, expectations, and personal responsibilities is not always easy, and for some students, these challenges can feel overwhelming. In those moments, it’s easy to feel discouraged or question your abilities. However, these struggles also taught me important lessons about resilience, perseverance, and the importance of not giving up.
One of the biggest challenges students face when they are having a tough time in school is learning how to manage stress and maintain confidence in themselves. It’s common to feel like you’re falling behind or not doing enough, especially when comparing yourself to others. This can lead to feelings of anxiety or even a loss of motivation altogether. Another challenge is the lack of support that some students experience. Not everyone has access to resources, guidance, or someone who truly understands what they are going through. This can make it even harder to overcome obstacles and stay on track. For me, getting through these challenges required patience, determination, and the willingness to ask for help when I needed it. It also required me to change the way I viewed failure, not as something negative, but as an opportunity to learn and improve.
These personal experiences have strongly influenced my desire to pursue psychology. I’ve seen firsthand how mental and emotional struggles can impact a person’s ability to succeed, not only in school but in life. I want to be able to understand those struggles on a deeper level and learn how to help people work through them. Psychology offers a way to explore the human mind, understand behavior, and develop strategies to support others. Whether it’s helping students manage stress, guiding individuals through difficult life situations, or simply providing a safe space for someone to be heard, I want to be in a position where I can make a positive difference.
In addition to helping others, my education in psychology will also allow me to continue growing as a person. The more I learn about human behavior, the more I will be able to understand my own thoughts and actions. This self-awareness is important because it helps build stronger relationships, improve communication, and make better decisions. Education is not just about gaining knowledge; it’s about developing the skills and mindset needed to navigate life’s challenges. By continuing my education, I will be better prepared to face obstacles, adapt to new situations, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Looking toward the future, I hope to use my education to create a better life for myself and to positively impact the lives of others. Pursuing psychology will open doors to careers where I can support individuals who are struggling, whether that’s in schools, counseling settings, or other environments where mental health is important. I want to be someone who helps others feel understood and supported, especially during difficult times. At the same time, building a career in this field will allow me to create stability and opportunities for myself, which is an important part of achieving my personal goals.
Ultimately, education is the foundation that will allow me to turn my goals into reality. It has already shaped the way I think, strengthened my determination, and guided me toward a career that I am passionate about. While the journey has not always been easy, the challenges I’ve faced have made me more resilient and more motivated to succeed. They have also given me a deeper sense of empathy for others, which is essential in the field of psychology. By continuing to learn and grow, I hope to use my education as a tool to create positive change, break down barriers, and help others reach their full potential while building a meaningful and successful future for myself.

I am Angelina Castillo. I have lived in Geneva New York all of my life and have dreams of leaving to somewhere bigger. I aspire to pursue a career in psychology because I am deeply interested in understanding the human mind and the ways people think, feel, and behave. Psychology fascinates me because it goes beyond surface-level actions and explores the deeper reasons behind them. I believe that by studying psychology, I can gain the knowledge and skills needed to support others through challenges, help them understand themselves better, and ultimately make a positive impact on people’s lives. One of the main reasons I am drawn to psychology is my desire to help people feel heard and understood. Many individuals struggle silently with stress, anxiety, trauma, or self-doubt, and they may not always have someone who truly listens to them without judgment. I want to be that person, someone who offers support, empathy, and guidance. Psychology provides the tools to not only listen, but also to respond in ways that are thoughtful, ethical, and effective. Knowing that my future work could help someone heal or feel less alone motivates me to pursue this career path. In the future, I hope to use psychology to create meaningful change, whether that is by working directly with individuals or contributing to the field through research and education. I am particularly interested in how mental health awareness can reduce stigma and encourage people to seek help when they need it. Mental health is often misunderstood or ignored, and I want to be part of a generation that normalizes conversations about emotional well-being. By educating others and advocating for mental health resources, I hope to leave a lasting, positive impact on my community. A career in psychology also aligns with my personal values of compassion, patience, and growth. Psychology emphasizes understanding people as complex individuals shaped by their experiences, environment, and emotions. This perspective encourages empathy rather than judgment, which I believe is essential in today’s world. Through this career, I want to continue growing as a person while helping others grow as well. Ultimately, my goal is not just to have a successful career, but to make a difference in people’s lives. Even small moments, helping someone cope with a difficult time, guiding them toward self-acceptance, or giving them hope, can have a powerful effect. By pursuing psychology, I hope to use my future career as a way to give back, support others, and contribute to a healthier and more understanding society.
