My name is Angelica Sanchez and I’m a teaching artist for The Tobin Center for Performing Arts for SAISD schools. I collaborate with middle and high school art teachers to modernize their processes for creating street art murals. Using digital drawing apps, laser-cutting printers, and app-based mapping programs we add art to STEM to create STEAM. I will graduate this spring from UTSA and apply to become an SAISD teacher myself. I have been working within the school system I am applying for and have been asked to work at multiple campuses. My passion and dedication are unmatched and it is truly humbling to see the professionals who I work with see the hard work I put in every day. I am interested in pursuing a career in teaching because I want to continue to share my passion for art and technology with my students. I want to be able to guide them toward careers and goals they didn't even know were a possibility for them. I have worked at many schools from the lowest-income neighborhoods and I have seen the transformative effect that a teacher who is passionate and dedicated can have on a student. I want to be that teacher for them, the person who will listen and dream with them so that they can reach their highest heights. As a street artist, my style is characterized by vibrant tropical colors, the natural environment of Puerto Rico, tile and textile patterns, and curated imagery pulled from my photography. My hands-on approach allows me to spraypaint customized color palettes, apply intricate stencil patterns, and incorporate cultural significance into every street art mural I create. As a Puerto Rican woman living in the diaspora, I strive to create art that is accessible, promotes diversity, and fosters a sense of community. Through my art, I create conversations about self-identity and give voice to the underrepresented. Material culture and traditions are important themes in my art as well as the lessons I teach my students. Working through the Tobin Center for Performing Arts at SAISD Schools has provided me with opportunities to share the art I create and the processes that help me achieve those artistic goals. I am committed to pushing boundaries, learning from fellow artists and students, and using my art as a force of positive impact on the urban canvas of my community. With the help of this scholarship, I will be able to continue my education and dive headfirst into teaching in my community.

In my senior year at the University of Texas in San Antonio, I embarked on a journey driven by determination and a commitment to my community. My primary goal is to graduate and complete my degree by the Spring of 2024, but my path isn't solely about personal achievement. It's about making a positive impact in the lives of others, especially those in underserved communities. As an active member of my community, I find purpose in volunteering alongside my local City Councilman. This involvement has provided me with valuable insights into the concerns and challenges faced by our community. It's taught me that true change begins at the grassroots level, and I'm determined to contribute to that change in any way I can. One of the ways I've chosen to make a difference is by teaching at the underfunded SAISD public schools within my community's school district. In those spaces, I have been able to work with middle school-aged students while being able to provide them the tools they need to explore their own personal journeys. Through my teaching, I aim to instill in them a strong sense of connection to their community and allow them the opportunity to explore their own cultures, ethnicities, and history. I want them to recognize their ability to participate in the beautification process of their neighborhoods and, by extension, have a say in shaping the future of their communities. What's been truly rewarding is witnessing my students transform into advocates for themselves and their communities. They've learned to use art as a powerful medium of self-expression. Their works of art not only showcase their talent but also serve as tools of inspiration for future generations of students including their own families. By placing themselves at the forefront of conversations that impact their communities, they're fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility. In our collaborative efforts, we create murals and artwork that address the social and political issues affecting their everyday lives. We engage in dialogues that explore what it means to be of a different race or ethnicity in a city where they often perceive themselves as a minority. These conversations are crucial for building empathy, understanding, and unity. Our projects have even brought together dozens of artists for street art events. These events are able to promote various essential aspects of our community, including art, collaboration, entrepreneurship, dance, music, and more. It's an initiative that demonstrates the potential of the arts to unite, inspire, and drive social change in our community.

Helping underserved youth realize their full potential is an important social issue that deeply resonates with me. Based on my experiences as an educator and advocate, I am committed to addressing this challenge and making a positive impact in the lives of these young individuals. Drawing upon my background as a teaching artist, I actively engage with underserved youth to provide them with meaningful opportunities in the arts. I firmly believe that the arts have the power to transcend barriers, inspire creativity, and foster personal growth. Through my work at schools like Young Men's Leadership Academy, Burbank High School, and Davis Middle School, I bring the transformative power of artistic expression to these students who often face limited access to the arts. I design and implement comprehensive arts education programs that not only develop their artistic skills but also nurture their confidence, critical thinking abilities, and self-expression. By teaching them about graffiti writing and the business side of being a professional street artist, I offer practical skills that can empower them to explore careers in the arts and leverage their creative talents. In addition to the artistic aspect, I recognize the importance of addressing the broader needs of underserved youth. I collaborate with community organizations, non-profits, and stakeholders to create a network of support. By providing access to resources such as tutoring, scholarships, and mental health services, we strive to remove the barriers that hinder these young individuals from reaching their full potential. Moreover, as an educator who has overcome personal hardships, I understand the challenges these students face. As an Army brat from Puerto Rico who has traveled the world, I can relate to their experiences and the unique struggles they encounter. Through my personal journey, I have developed resilience, determination, and empathy, which I channel into my work with these students. By being a supportive mentor and role model, I aim to inspire and empower underserved youth to overcome their obstacles. I share my own experiences of overcoming adversity, emphasizing the importance of resilience, perseverance, and self-belief. Through open and honest conversations, I create a safe space where they feel heard, valued, and supported. Beyond the individual level, I actively engage in advocacy to address the systemic issues that perpetuate educational inequities. I collaborate with policymakers, community leaders, and fellow educators to advocate for increased funding, policy changes, and educational reforms. By amplifying the voices of underserved youth and highlighting the importance of equal access to quality education, we strive to create lasting systemic change.

My journey through education and encounters with the legal system have profoundly influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. These experiences have shaped my perspective on social justice and the transformative power of education, propelling me to address important social issues through my work as an educator and artist. Moreover, overcoming personal hardships has fueled my determination to create a positive impact in the world. Education has always been a driving force in my life. However, it was my experience with an inadequate and underfunded school system that exposed the stark realities faced by disadvantaged students. As a teaching artist, I have witnessed firsthand the impact of educational inequity on marginalized communities. These experiences have instilled in me a deep commitment to dismantling barriers and providing equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their backgrounds. By teaching in schools like Young Men's Leadership Academy, Burbank High School, and Davis Middle School, I strive to empower and uplift students who are often overlooked or underserved. I believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of adversity and providing a pathway to success. Through my teaching, I aim to instill in my students a love for learning, critical thinking skills, and the confidence to pursue their dreams. Additionally, my encounters with the legal system have heightened my awareness of social injustices. Witnessing the systemic inequalities and prejudices within the legal system has ignited my passion for addressing these issues. As an educator, I engage my students in critical conversations about social justice, equity, and the need for change. I encourage them to challenge societal norms, think critically, and advocate for justice and equality. Beyond the classroom, I use my artistic skills to shed light on critical social issues. Specifically, as a graffiti artist and a teaching artist for the Tobin Center of the Performing Arts, I embrace the power of visual art to spark conversations and challenge societal norms. I teach my students not only the art of graffiti writing but also the significance of using art as a tool for social change. Together, we explore identity, representation, and community-building themes through our art. My personal journey has also shaped my approach to life and career aspirations. As a returning student who had to leave school due to epilepsy, I have faced numerous challenges along the way. However, the unwavering support of my family, coupled with my resilience and determination, has enabled me to overcome these obstacles and pursue my passions. Being a mother of two children and having been married for over a decade, I understand the importance of perseverance and the role of a strong support system. These experiences have fueled my drive to be the person I wished I had when I faced my own hardships. I strive to be an advocate, mentor, and source of inspiration for my students. In conclusion, my experiences with education, the legal system, and personal hardships have shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. They have instilled in me a commitment to addressing social issues, promoting educational equity, and empowering students through art and education. Through my work as an educator, teaching artist, and advocate, I aim to create a positive impact on the lives of others and contribute to a more just and inclusive society. I am driven by a deep belief in the transformative power of education and art, and I will continue to overcome obstacles, challenge norms, and uplift marginalized communities on my path toward making a lasting difference in the world.

The biggest influences in my life have been my sisters Paola and Laura. We share an unbreakable bond, and one of the most significant aspects that has brought us closer is our shared love for street art and graffiti. Together, we have explored the vibrant world of visual art on a large scale, using the urban landscape as our canvas. Through street art and graffiti, I have not only expressed my creativity but also built a sense of community. As a Puerto Rican graffiti artist, I have been able to use my cultural identity as well as my expanded graffiti crew to help me navigate the trials and tribulations of life. I believe that art has the power to transform public spaces, engage communities, and ignite conversations. By collaborating on murals and participating in community projects, we have witnessed firsthand the positive impact that art can have in bringing people together, fostering unity, and reclaiming neglected spaces. When I graduate, I aim to leverage my artistic skills in street art and graffiti to be innovative. I want to push the boundaries of traditional graffiti and explore new techniques, materials, and ideas. My sister and I have always approached street art as a form of self-expression, but also as a means to address social issues and amplify marginalized voices. We intend to use our artwork to challenge societal norms, raise awareness, and promote dialogue on topics that matter to us and our community. What makes our artistic gift and skill different is our shared perspective and collaborative approach. We have developed a unique visual language that intertwines our individual styles and voices, resulting in powerful and thought-provoking artwork. Our love for street art and graffiti has allowed us to create a distinct artistic presence that resonates with others who share our passion for public art and community engagement. Furthermore, I have been fortunate enough to share my knowledge and passion for graffiti as a teacher for the Tobin Center of Performing Arts. Through this role, I have had the opportunity to guide and inspire students and art teachers in exploring the world of graffiti writing. Teaching allows me to not only pass on technical skills but also to instill a sense of creativity, self-expression, and community engagement in my students. "A People's History of the United States" presents a distinct and alternative perspective on American history, aiming to highlight the experiences and struggles of marginalized groups often overlooked in traditional historical narratives. The book seeks to challenge prevailing historical interpretations by focusing on the perspectives of indigenous peoples, enslaved Africans, women, and the working class. One of the reasons why some individuals advocate for this book to be widely read is because it offers a critical analysis of power structures and encourages readers to question the dominant narratives that shape our understanding of history. It provides a counterpoint to conventional historical accounts, shedding light on the social, economic, and political injustices that have shaped the United States throughout its history. By delving into lesser-known stories and providing a platform for voices that have been historically marginalized, "A People's History of the United States" fosters a deeper understanding of the complexities and contradictions within American society. It prompts readers to critically examine the forces that have shaped the nation and encourages them to reflect on the implications of historical events for contemporary society. However, it's important to note that promoting any single book as a universal must-read for everyone in the world may overlook the diversity of interests, perspectives, and knowledge that exist. Reading preferences and the pursuit of knowledge vary greatly among individuals, and different books can offer unique insights and perspectives. Encouraging a diverse range of reading materials and fostering an environment of critical thinking and intellectual curiosity may be more conducive to broadening one's understanding of the world.
