My name is Angie Sims, and I am a sophomore at Southern New Hampshire University, pursuing a degree in Video Game Programming and Development. I currently hold a 3.9 GPA, and I am deeply passionate about creating immersive, innovative gaming experiences. My ultimate career goal is to work at a video game studio and eventually publish a game of my own.
At 30 years old, I consider myself a latecomer to higher education, but I see that as one of my strengths. I am proud to be proving that it’s never too late to follow your passion and invest in your future. I want my journey to encourage others to pursue their goals no matter their age or the obstacles in front of them.

My decision to return to school was not something that happened suddenly. It was a dream I had carried with me for many years, but life circumstances always seemed to delay it. For much of my adult life, I was the primary caregiver for my grandmother, who was more like a mother to me than a grandmother. She shaped who I am, taught me resilience, and gave me the support I needed to get through life’s challenges. Caring for her was my priority, and while I do not regret a single moment of that responsibility, it meant putting my education aside. When she passed away, I was left with an emptiness that I did not know how to fill. I wanted to honor her and do something that would make her proud, and that realization inspired me to finally return to school.
Gaming has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. My first introduction to video games was in the 1990s when I got my first Game Boy. From that moment on, I was fascinated by the way games could transport me into another world. They sparked my imagination and gave me a love for problem solving and creativity. As I grew older, that love for gaming never faded. Instead, it developed into a desire to learn how games are made and to one day create experiences that inspire others the way I was inspired as a child. Choosing to study video game programming and development felt like the natural path for me.
Returning to school was not without challenges. I failed the very first class I enrolled in, and that failure shook my confidence. I felt embarrassed and questioned whether I was capable of being a student again, especially at my age. But instead of letting that setback define me, I made the choice to learn from it. I changed my study habits, sought help when I needed it, and refused to let one failure dictate my future. Now, as a sophomore at Southern New Hampshire University, I am proud to have a 3.9 GPA. That achievement reminds me every day of how far I have come since those first doubts.
Being a thirty year old student can feel intimidating when many of my peers are younger. At first, I felt out of place and even questioned whether I had started too late. Over time, however, I began to recognize that my age is not a weakness. Returning to school later in life has given me perspective and determination. I appreciate my education in a way I might not have when I was younger. Every class and every assignment is something I value because I know the sacrifices it took to get here.
My goal is to work at a video game studio and eventually publish a game of my own. I want to create something meaningful that combines my love for gaming with the skills I am building in my degree program. More importantly, I hope my story inspires others who might feel like it is too late to return to school. I want people to see that no matter your age or the obstacles in your way, you can still pursue education and follow your dreams.
