There is a clear explanation as to why the great philosophers are known as the first mathematicians and scientists. These topics are closely interconnected as one ponders the structure and meaning of the universe. While many believe that the logic of science and math is contrary to the intangible essence of spirituality, the reality is that science and math support spirituality and faith. This connection is extremely difficult to explain because I don't think anyone completely understands it. However, by investigating how life and the work on both small and large scales, the complementary relationship of the two is revealed.
Personally, I am very interested in how the human body and other life forms work on the molecular level and how those molecules group to form macromolecules, how those macromolecules group to form polymers, and so on. I find a beauty and depth in how these processes work. The precise way that each molecule must line up with another signifies a sort of divine order, perhaps with a supernatural hand guiding the way. I don't mean supernatural in the sense of a ghostly presence, rather the existence of a higher entity or system that governs the universe. Contemplation of the processes of life offer the questions that philosophers continue to argue the meanings of life and how it is organized on the spiritual level.
The manner in which numbers combine and work together to describe almost any relationship that is possible supports a spiritual dictation of order, outside of logic itself. Mathematics are at the base of almost all science, providing a foundation from which we understand physics, chemistry, and biology. As a direct consequence, mathematics also supports the reality of the higher level of reality outside of what we can perceive through the senses in that it proves an order to what we can know with the senses and extends it beyond through reason.
In this way, I believe math and science are able to fully function and flourish under the laws established by a higher order. This means that we can come to spiritual conclusions without sacrificing logic and what we know through the intellect. This, of course, must come with the acceptance that our senses may fail us in knowing the fullness of existence and what it entails. We can only reach a complete understanding through reason, coupled with an openness to the possibility of a plane of reality that we may not know yet.

From the time I was very young, I have served my community, especially through the cooking and serving of meals to the disadvantaged in my local area. My family gets together and prepares a large, balanced meal for the people who do not have the money for it. Because I have always come face to face with those that are seen as inferior by society, I have grown a huge passion for helping those who cannot help themselves. I have learned that oftentimes people are rejected once they don't have the money to support themselves. They are deemed lazy, druggies, and criminals. This is when they most need to be lifted up. I believe that the way God is calling me to do this is through medicine and a career as a physician.
I am currently enrolled at UCLA, majoring in biochemistry. After graduating, I plan to attend medical school. As a doctor, I want to travel the country and even the world, tending to the poor's physical and spiritual needs. I could not be more ecstatic about the prospect of offering medical assistance to those who need it most, who are most often those who cannot afford it. In healing people of what weighs on them most, they can be lifted from their afflictions, so that they are no longer downtrodden.
I believe that this is the most important thing that I can achieve. This is my goal.
