1,000 puzzle pieces.
That is my life.
Each piece is essential to who I am and where I belong, from the people I’ve encountered to the places I’ve visited and the opinions that have shaped me. Each moment is a distinct puzzle piece—some radiant and harmonious, others unconventional and enigmatic—all forming the larger puzzle of life.
Luck. The first puzzle piece of my life. On October 26, 2007, my father entered the American Visa lottery, which granted only 100,000 foreigners visas to the U.S. He always tried his luck, but that year, his luck changed everything—it brought me to America. As the first in my family to immigrate, I’ve learned to embrace every opportunity and never limit my capabilities. From helping my parents navigate American customs to turning in assignments before 11:59 PM, I carry the weight of my family’s sacrifices. Every chance I’ve been given is an opportunity I must make the most of—all because of luck, a concept that once felt like a distant dream.
Passion. The puzzle piece that shapes my purpose. Three years ago, I arrived in Nigeria, greeted by a familiar warmth that quickly turned into the harsh scent of gasoline. Amidst the chaos, I felt a sense of belonging. The airport was riddled with warnings against bribery, but I watched our locked luggage retrieved only after a bribe was paid. On the two-hour journey through traffic to a destination just thirty minutes away, I saw the harsh realities of my homeland: trash-strewn streets, desperate vendors, and visible frustration on countless faces. The injustice I witnessed awakened my passion for law. I longed for justice for those unable to advocate for themselves. That visit ignited my calling: to become a family lawyer, fostering unity and strengthening familial bonds. I believe meaningful change begins within families—on a small, impactful scale. Living in a developed country has made me acutely aware of the struggles faced by those without luck. Inspired by this, I founded the Youth Justice League, a platform uniting students in their shared passion for justice and fostering an understanding of law’s impact—a puzzle piece in the narrative of law I aspire to embody as an attorney.
Leadership. The puzzle piece that transforms passion into action. As a freshman, I stood amidst over 3,000 students, each voice different and valuable. As class president for the past four years, I’ve worked to ensure every voice is heard. From planning Homecoming to creating the first annual Black History Showcase and presiding over the African Students Association, I’ve navigated countless opinions and obstacles.
Leadership has taught me to blend ideas and turn careful planning into meaningful change. In a school with low spirit and room for growth, I took the first step, daring to believe in what could be achieved. It was through leadership that I learned meaningful change is accomplished not by luck alone but by courage, collaboration, and resilience.
Each piece of my identity—my family’s sacrifices, my passion for law, and my leadership—has shaped the mosaic of who I am today. Luck, passion, and leadership are the foundations of my story, the puzzle pieces that prepare me to leave a lasting impact in the field of law.
As I step into the future, I’ll carry these with me—pieces of the puzzle that is life.
