Dr. Tom Farrell Future Leaders of Maine Scholarship
My name is Ange Viennot and I am interested in applying for this Scholarship. I am a senior at George Stevens Academy and I plan to study to become a physical education teacher. This year, I completed my ISIP with a physical education teacher and I really enjoyed the experience. It allowed me to see what the job is like and confirmed my interest in becoming a physical education teacher. At GSA I play soccer, baseball and go to the gym to lift almost everyday after school but I also participate and give my best in every single physical education class. I want to become a physical education teacher because I enjoy helping others stay active and build confidence through sports. My goal is to encourage students to develop healthy habits and to show them that physical activity can be both fun and rewarding. My personal story is complicated. I never met my dad. He left before I was born, so my mom raised me on her own. We lived in a tiny house in a village in the south of France, surrounded by hills and olive trees. It’s a calm and peaceful place, unlike my life at home. For as long as I can remember, nothing about my life felt calm. That’s why, at fifteen, I packed everything I could fit into one big suitcase and said goodbye to everything I’d ever known.Leaving my life in France was the hardest decision I’ve ever made, but I wanted a future where I could study, work, and create something good for myself. When my aunt and uncle in the U.S. offered to have me live with them, I didn’t hesitate. I arrived at their home in rural Maine in the middle of the school year and moved in with my three cousins, two dogs, two cats, and a lot of chickens. I barely knew English but jumped into American high school life. There were family dinners and bedtimes. They helped me with homework and encouraged me to try new things. I played steel drums. I joined soccer and baseball and somehow had the best batting average on the team, even though I barely knew the rules. For the first time in my life, I was excited to go to school. I discovered I’m good at math and took classes like culinary arts, welding, and forensics. My life completely changed for the better, and I’m grateful to my American family for giving me a stable, loving place to grow. It took time for me to understand that leaving my family in France wasn’t giving up on them. It was choosing a different kind of life. For me, college isn’t just about education; it’s about rewriting my story and building a future I’m proud of. I had to grow up fast, but that’s made me determined to make the most of every opportunity. College is the start of my next chapter. This journey requires funding that I personally do not have. As an international student, I am not eligible for many of the scholarships that US citizens can receive. Because I can only work in France during the summer months to save as much money as I can for college. Your scholarship would help me close the gap in making this dream come true. Receiving this support would allow me to focus on my education and continue working toward my goal of becoming a physical education teacher. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application and for supporting students who are working hard to build their future.
