H. Thomas Pittman STEM Scholarship
Throughout my life, three important moments inspired me to pursue a degree in a STEM field and eventually become a dentist. These experiences taught me resilience, determination, and the importance of helping others.
The first pivotal moment was moving to a new environment when I was younger. Leaving behind familiar friends and starting over was difficult. I had to adjust to new people, new expectations, and a different atmosphere. At first, I felt uncomfortable and uncertain. Over time, I learned how to communicate with others and build new relationships. This experience taught me how to adapt when facing challenges. It also showed me the value of understanding different people and their experiences. These lessons are important in healthcare because dentists work with patients from many different backgrounds.
The second pivotal moment was overcoming academic challenges in high school. As I entered more advanced classes, I realized that success required consistent effort and discipline. There were times when subjects such as science and math felt difficult. Instead of giving up, I spent more time studying and asking questions when I needed help. Each obstacle helped me become a stronger student and a better problem solver. Through these experiences, I developed a deeper appreciation for biology and the way science can be used to improve lives. Learning how the human body functions made me even more interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.
The third pivotal moment was discovering my passion for dentistry. I became interested in how oral health affects a person's overall well being and confidence. A healthy smile can change the way someone feels about themselves. As I learned more about dentistry, I realized that it combines many of the things I enjoy most. It involves science, technology, critical thinking, and direct interaction with people. I was inspired by the opportunity to use scientific knowledge to solve problems while helping patients improve their health and self confidence. This realization gave me a clear goal and motivated me to pursue a STEM degree.
These three experiences shaped the person I am today. Moving to a new environment taught me resilience. Academic challenges taught me perseverance and problem solving skills. Discovering dentistry gave me a purpose and direction for my future. Together, these moments inspired my pursuit of a STEM education and strengthened my commitment to becoming a dentist. I hope to use my education to make a positive impact on the lives of others and contribute to my community through compassionate and skilled healthcare.
Text-Em-All Founders Scholarship
In Cameroon, I remember seeing people who didn't even have the option to brush their teeth with real toothpaste. I was one of them. We did not have much, so we used soap to try and keep our mouths clean. When you grow up like that, you realize very quickly that basic health is a luxury. My family moved to the United States when I was eight years old. Even though we were a low-income immigrant family here, my parents worked incredibly hard to provide for us. They were able to put a roof over our heads and food on the table. They even made sure we could finally go to a real dentist. But I never forgot where I came from or the feeling of using soap just to try and stay healthy.
I plan to make a positive impact by using my education to become a dentist who helps people who have been left behind. My experience in Cameroon gave me a perspective that most dental students don't have. I know what it feels like to have absolutely nothing and to lack the basic tools for hygiene. Then, moving to the U.S. showed me that even in a wealthy country, many immigrant families still struggle to navigate the healthcare system. My goal is to bridge these two worlds. I want to use my degree to provide care and education to people who think that a dentist is out of their reach. I want to turn my past struggle into a career of service.
My career choice is focused on global and local impact. I want to work in areas where dental care is a major struggle. I want to be the dentist who explains things simply and makes people feel comfortable. I want to help immigrant families in the U.S. who are working hard just to survive, like mine did. But I also want to give back to places like Cameroon. I want to lead programs that provide actual dental supplies and education to kids who are still using soap today. I want to show them that their situation can change and that someone who was once in their shoes is now there to help them.
I am not just going to school for myself. I am going for the kid I used to be in Cameroon who didn't have a toothbrush. I am going for my parents, who moved us across the world so I could have a better life. They showed me that with enough hard work, you can overcome any obstacle. My education is my way of honoring their sacrifice. I have the focus to get through the hard science classes and the discipline to become a great doctor. I know what it’s like to have nothing, which is why I will work harder than anyone else to make sure I can give back.
This scholarship is the support I need to stay focused on my studies. Dental school is a long and expensive journey, and this help would mean I can spend more time learning and less time worrying about how to pay for it. I am ready to take the grit I learned from my parents and the lessons I learned from my childhood to make a real difference. I want to build a career where I can give people back their health and their confidence. Thank you for listening to my story and for helping me turn my dream of becoming a dentist into a reality.
