My parents have played an integral part of the person I have become. One thing that particularly stands out and has stuck with me, however, is the mantra that they follow to always support and encourage family, regardless of what it takes. My parents have inspired me through making countless sacrifices for me and my brother. My brother has autism, so he has always needed a little extra attention and support, especially when he was younger. My parents sacrificed countless hours transporting him to many different appointments such as counseling, therapies, and doctor’s appointments. My parents didn’t have to do these things, but they did without complaining because it was what my brother needed. My parents gave up so much of their time to focus on him and work with him to work on habits, work techniques, or even ways to calm him down. Because of their sacrifices, my brother is so much farther than he would be and has even gone from being nonverbal to saying complex words and having fewer meltdowns and poor behavior.
My parents not only made sacrifices for my brother, but also made sure to sacrifice their time and effort for me. A major aspect of my life involves the sports that I play for my school. I play sports year-round, participating on a team in each of the 3 seasons offered. Generally, I have practices or a game every day during the week. My parents selflessly drive me to and from each event and ensure they attend each of my games to cheer me on, regardless of what they have going on in their own lives, even if that has meant they take the time off work to be there.
My mom has always been a strong support for me whenever I need her emotionally or physically. During my freshman year, I struggled significantly emotionally. I was sexually assaulted and, unfortunately, faced many additional conflicts with peers and adults who did not believe me when I reported the incident. My mom was there for every step of the way, whenever I needed her, to support me emotionally. This year, she took off personal day from work, on the day of my senior portraits to help me do my hair and makeup and just look the best because she knew how important they were to me and wanted to make me feel special. My dad does a lot the smaller things that many people would not notice from changing my laundry for me, or running to the store if I need something.
My parents are truly selfless in every way. They consistently put our needs and wants before their own without ever complaining. They are there for both my brother and me in other ways. They always try their hardest, even working extra shifts if needed, to provide us with opportunities and anything new we may want to try or accomplish. My parents started the tradition when my brother and I were young to take one vacation each summer together as well as taking several camping trips a year together. The sacrifices they make to ensure that this tradition happens each year is important to me because it has ensured that we have family time together and has brought our little family closer.
My parents have always taught us to be grateful for what we have and to never be ungrateful. They have taught us not to act entitled, even though we get the world and more from our parents because it takes a lot of work from them to provide these things.
