I’ve always been a driven person, eager to work hard and build a future, but depression has been a significant part of my life. For many years, I struggled with feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and disconnected from the world around me. It wasn’t always easy to talk about, but deep down, I knew something was wrong. I had moments where I doubted myself, my worth, and my future, and I felt like I was stuck in a cycle of self-doubt and negative thinking. The weight of these emotions often held me back, and it was difficult to see a way out.
For a long time, I didn’t have the tools to cope with these feelings. I tried to push through, telling myself to keep going, but the pressure only made it harder to stay motivated. There were times when I felt isolated, as though no one could understand what I was going through. The internal struggle felt like a constant battle, and I often wondered if things would ever get better.
During some of my darkest moments, I was tempted to turn to drugs as a way to numb the pain and escape from reality. Fortunately, I never went down that path. I realized that while it might have offered temporary relief, it wouldn’t solve the underlying issues I was facing. Instead of relying on substances, I sought help through therapy and started learning more about myself and how to manage my mental health. I began to develop healthier coping mechanisms, such as journaling, exercise, and talking to trusted friends and family. These changes helped me begin to heal and slowly regain a sense of control over my life.
The hurdles I’ve faced due to depression have shaped me into the person I am today. I’ve learned resilience and the importance of taking care of my mental health. It wasn’t an easy journey, but I now know that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. I’ve come to understand that mental health is just as important as physical health, and both require attention and care. I’ve learned that setbacks are a part of life, but they don’t define me. I can keep moving forward, even if it means taking small steps.
Today, I am in a place where I feel ready to pursue my passions, especially through education and trade school. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead of me and am determined to make the most of them. The struggles I’ve faced have taught me perseverance, empathy, and the importance of staying true to myself. I now have a clear sense of direction and purpose, and I am confident that the tools I’ve gained along the way will help me succeed. Despite the challenges I’ve faced, I am stronger for having overcome them, and I am ready to embrace the future with hope and determination.

Understanding the nature of our universe is one of the most fundamental pursuits of human knowledge. From the earliest moments of civilization, humans have looked to the stars, the skies, and the world around them with a sense of wonder and curiosity. Today, this quest to understand the universe is more important than ever. The knowledge we gain from studying the cosmos and the forces that govern it not only expands our intellectual horizons but also has the potential to improve life on Earth in countless ways. Whether through scientific discoveries, technological advancements, or philosophical insights, understanding the universe provides a foundation for addressing some of humanity’s most pressing challenges and contributes to the broader pursuit of truth.
**The Importance of Understanding the Universe**
The pursuit of understanding the universe serves many purposes. First and foremost, it helps us to satisfy our innate curiosity about the world and our place within it. This quest for knowledge has been at the heart of human progress, pushing us to explore, discover, and innovate. It’s a drive that has led to monumental achievements, such as the discovery of the laws of physics, the development of advanced technologies, and the expansion of human knowledge into previously unknown realms, such as space and quantum mechanics.
Secondly, understanding the universe allows us to better understand ourselves. We are part of this vast cosmos, and our actions and choices have consequences that ripple through it. By studying the universe, we gain insights into the fundamental laws of nature that shape our existence. This understanding can help us answer existential questions, such as why we are here, how life began, and whether there are other forms of life elsewhere in the universe. It can also help us make more informed decisions about how we live on Earth, ensuring that we work in harmony with the natural world rather than against it.
Additionally, understanding the universe has practical implications for solving real-world problems. Many of the greatest scientific breakthroughs in history, from electricity to modern medicine, have come from understanding the natural world and applying that knowledge in innovative ways. By studying the universe, we can unlock new technologies, improve our infrastructure, and find sustainable solutions to challenges like climate change, energy consumption, and food production. The space race, for example, has not only led to the exploration of other planets but also resulted in numerous technological advancements, including satellite communication, GPS, and medical imaging technologies. The benefits of studying the universe, therefore, are not limited to abstract knowledge but have direct and tangible effects on our everyday lives.
Finally, understanding the universe helps us to cultivate a sense of humility and interconnectedness. When we look at the vastness of the cosmos, we are reminded of how small and fragile our planet is in the grand scheme of things. This can inspire a sense of awe and reverence for life and the environment, motivating us to take better care of our world and each other. In a time when global challenges such as climate change, political instability, and inequality threaten the stability of our planet, understanding the universe can remind us of the importance of cooperation, responsibility, and long-term thinking.
**The Ideas and Concepts to Explore**
In order to better understand the nature of our universe, we must employ a variety of ideas and concepts that span multiple disciplines, from physics to philosophy. Each of these fields contributes a unique perspective on the universe, and it is only by integrating them that we can begin to unravel the mysteries of existence.
1. **The Scientific Method and Observation**
One of the most important tools in understanding the universe is the scientific method, which allows us to observe, hypothesize, experiment, and draw conclusions based on evidence. The scientific method encourages a systematic approach to exploring the universe, relying on data and empirical observation rather than speculation or dogma. By conducting experiments, making measurements, and using technology to gather information, scientists can uncover the laws that govern everything from the behavior of subatomic particles to the movements of galaxies.
For example, the development of telescopes has revolutionized our understanding of the universe by allowing us to observe distant stars, planets, and galaxies. The use of particle accelerators has led to discoveries in quantum mechanics, helping us to understand the fundamental particles that make up matter. In the future, advances in artificial intelligence, data analysis, and computational modeling will allow us to process and interpret even larger datasets, helping to unlock further secrets of the universe.
2. **Relativity and Quantum Mechanics**
Two of the most profound concepts in modern physics—Einstein’s theory of relativity and quantum mechanics—offer us different perspectives on the universe, yet they are both essential to understanding its nature.
Relativity explains the behavior of objects at large scales, such as planets, stars, and galaxies, and provides insights into the structure of spacetime itself. It challenges our everyday understanding of space and time, showing that they are not absolute but are instead affected by gravity and motion. This concept has been confirmed through experiments, such as observing the bending of light around massive objects like the sun, and has led to the development of technologies like GPS, which rely on relativistic corrections.
On the other hand, quantum mechanics deals with the behavior of particles at the smallest scales. It reveals a strange and counterintuitive world where particles can exist in multiple states at once, and their behavior is governed by probabilities rather than certainties. Quantum mechanics has revolutionized our understanding of matter and energy, and it holds the key to many future advancements, such as quantum computing, which could revolutionize industries like medicine, finance, and artificial intelligence.
Both relativity and quantum mechanics offer complementary views of the universe, and understanding how they fit together—especially in areas like black holes, dark matter, and the origins of the universe—is one of the greatest challenges in modern physics.
3. **The Search for Extraterrestrial Life**
One of the most exciting and profound questions in science is whether we are alone in the universe. The search for extraterrestrial life, whether in the form of microbial life on Mars or intelligent civilizations in distant galaxies, is a major area of research in astrobiology. Discovering evidence of life beyond Earth would not only have profound implications for our understanding of biology and the nature of life itself, but it would also raise important philosophical questions about our place in the universe.
The search for extraterrestrial life involves a variety of methods, from sending probes to other planets and moons in our solar system to scanning the skies for signals from alien civilizations. This quest also challenges our assumptions about what constitutes life, as it may not necessarily resemble the life forms we are familiar with on Earth. As our technology improves, the chances of discovering extraterrestrial life increase, and such a discovery could profoundly change our perspective on the universe.
4. **Philosophy and the Nature of Reality**
While science provides us with powerful tools to explore the universe, philosophy offers important insights into the meaning and implications of our discoveries. Questions about the nature of reality, the origin of the universe, and the role of consciousness are central to both scientific and philosophical inquiry.
For example, the concept of the multiverse—the idea that our universe is just one of many in a larger multiverse—challenges our understanding of space, time, and reality itself. Theories of consciousness, such as whether it is purely a product of the brain or whether it extends beyond physical matter, have profound implications for our understanding of the universe and our place within it.
Philosophy also encourages us to consider the ethical implications of our actions as we explore and manipulate the universe. As we develop technologies that allow us to harness the power of the cosmos, such as space travel and energy generation, we must ask ourselves what responsibility we have to future generations and to the environment.
**Conclusion**
In conclusion, the pursuit of understanding the nature of our universe is a critical endeavor that holds the potential to shape the future of humanity. Through scientific discovery, technological innovation, and philosophical exploration, we can gain a deeper understanding of the universe and our place within it. By employing concepts from fields such as physics, biology, and philosophy, we can unravel the mysteries of existence and work to address the challenges facing our world. The quest to understand the universe is not just about satisfying curiosity—it is about creating a better future for all of humanity.
Wicked Fan Scholarship
I’m a fan of *Wicked* because it’s a musical that combines an engaging story, powerful music, and memorable characters in a way that resonates with me on multiple levels. From the moment I first heard the soundtrack and later experienced the show, I was captivated by its unique twist on the classic *The Wizard of Oz* story, the strong themes of friendship, and the exploration of moral gray areas. *Wicked* isn’t just a show; it’s an experience that challenges conventional ideas and encourages deeper thinking about the world around us.
One of the main reasons I love *Wicked* is its perspective on the well-known characters of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. By reimagining these characters and providing them with rich backstories, the musical gives them depth and complexity that I hadn’t expected. Elphaba, the “Wicked Witch,” is portrayed as a misunderstood, intelligent, and passionate character who challenges societal norms. Her struggles with her identity, discrimination, and the pursuit of justice are themes that resonate deeply with me. The idea that a person’s perceived “wickedness” can be a result of how society views them is a powerful message, and it’s one that *Wicked* conveys beautifully.
Glinda, on the other hand, starts out as a superficial and self-centered character but undergoes significant growth throughout the show. Her transformation from a “good” character to someone who recognizes her own flaws and the importance of empathy is inspiring. Their dynamic as unlikely friends, with contrasting personalities and ideologies, makes their relationship all the more compelling. The bond between Elphaba and Glinda, as well as the sacrifices they make for each other, highlights the importance of friendship and understanding in overcoming adversity.
Another reason I’m a fan of *Wicked* is its music. The score, composed by Stephen Schwartz, is nothing short of incredible. Songs like “Defying Gravity,” “For Good,” and “Popular” have such emotional depth and are performed with such passion that they stick with you long after the show ends. “Defying Gravity,” in particular, is an anthem of empowerment and resilience. The soaring vocals and the powerful message of the song make it impossible not to be moved. Each song in the show is a masterpiece, adding to the overall experience and helping to convey the emotions and themes of the story.
The visual aspects of *Wicked* are also striking. The set design, costumes, and lighting all work together to create a fantastical world that draws you into the story. The special effects, especially during “Defying Gravity,” are breathtaking and enhance the emotional impact of the moment. It’s a visually stunning production that captures the magic of Oz while also highlighting the emotional depth of the characters’ journeys.
Overall, *Wicked* is a show that speaks to the importance of challenging perceptions, embracing individuality, and valuing the power of friendship. It tackles complex themes like prejudice, self-identity, and the blurred lines between good and evil in a way that feels both entertaining and thought-provoking. The combination of strong storytelling, powerful music, and memorable characters makes *Wicked* a musical that I am proud to be a fan of.
LeBron James Fan Scholarship
I am a huge fan of LeBron James because of his unparalleled skill, work ethic, leadership, and dedication to his community. As a basketball player, LeBron consistently displays a level of excellence that few can match, both on and off the court. His versatility, basketball IQ, and ability to perform under pressure make him a player who stands out not just in his era but in the history of the game.
LeBron's combination of size, speed, and skill is unmatched. Standing at 6'9" and weighing around 250 pounds, he has the physical attributes of a power forward but the agility and playmaking ability of a point guard. This unique blend of traits allows him to play virtually every position on the court. Whether it’s scoring, passing, or rebounding, LeBron excels in every aspect of the game. His ability to dominate at such a high level for so many years is incredible. What’s more impressive is that he has maintained this level of excellence well into his late 30s, a time when many players start to decline.
One of the things that separates LeBron from many of the greatest players is his basketball IQ. His court vision, passing accuracy, and decision-making in clutch moments showcase his deep understanding of the game. He often elevates the play of his teammates, and it’s no surprise that many of his former teammates speak highly of how LeBron’s leadership has impacted their careers. His ability to elevate a team is one of the key reasons why he’s led multiple teams to championships, and his leadership on the court is just as impressive as his individual achievements.
Off the court, LeBron has become a role model for millions of people, especially young athletes. His work ethic, dedication, and humility have made him a positive influence on and off the court. LeBron’s philanthropic efforts, particularly with his LeBron James Family Foundation, show his commitment to giving back to his community. His “I PROMISE School” in Akron, Ohio, is a testament to his dedication to helping underserved children get access to education and better opportunities.
As for whether LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time, that’s a topic of much debate. There are arguments for Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and other legendary players, but LeBron’s combination of longevity, skill, and impact on the game gives him a strong case. LeBron has done it all: multiple championships, MVPs, All-NBA selections, and all-time records in points, assists, and rebounds. While some might argue that Jordan’s six championships or Kobe’s mentality make them the greatest, LeBron’s ability to consistently perform at the highest level over nearly two decades is extraordinary.
LeBron has also adapted his game over time, adjusting to the changing styles of the NBA. His consistency and ability to remain a top player, even as the game evolves, are key reasons why he’s in the conversation for the greatest of all time. While there may be differences of opinion about who holds that title, LeBron’s legacy is undeniably one of greatness.
In conclusion, I am a fan of LeBron James because of his on-court dominance, off-court philanthropy, and the way he represents the values of hard work, resilience, and leadership. Whether or not he is the greatest of all time may be up for debate, but LeBron’s influence on the game and his lasting impact on both basketball and society cannot be denied.
Team USA Fan Scholarship
One of my favorite athletes to cheer for on Team USA is swimmer Michael Phelps. His incredible achievements, both in the pool and as a role model, have made him an inspiring figure for athletes around the world, and especially for me as a swimmer. Phelps’s passion for his sport, dedication to training, and ability to perform under pressure are qualities that resonate with me and many others.
Michael Phelps’s success story is remarkable. He holds the record for the most Olympic gold medals by any athlete in history, with 23 golds, and a total of 28 Olympic medals. This level of achievement in a sport as demanding as swimming speaks to his incredible talent and work ethic. Phelps has demonstrated that consistency and relentless pursuit of improvement are key to reaching the highest level of success. As a swimmer myself, I look up to his determination to push past limits and overcome obstacles.
What makes Phelps particularly admirable is his perseverance through adversity. Despite facing challenges, both in his personal life and in his swimming career, he continued to rise above them and keep pursuing greatness. His mental toughness is something I strive to emulate. It’s easy to be motivated when things are going well, but it’s how we handle setbacks that truly shapes us. Phelps’s ability to bounce back from defeats and push through physical and mental exhaustion is something I find inspiring.
In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Phelps has been open about his struggles with mental health. His willingness to share his journey with the world, especially his struggles with depression, has been empowering for many. It reminds me that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes, and that asking for help and prioritizing mental well-being is just as important as physical training. His vulnerability has helped to break the stigma around mental health in the sports world and has encouraged athletes to focus on their overall well-being, not just their performance.
Phelps’s impact goes beyond his Olympic success. He’s also made it a priority to give back to others. Through the Michael Phelps Foundation, he has worked to inspire and empower youth through swimming, particularly through initiatives focused on water safety. His commitment to using his platform for positive change is something I admire deeply, and it’s something I aspire to do in my own life—use my skills and opportunities to help others and make a difference.
Ultimately, Michael Phelps’s combination of skill, resilience, humility, and commitment to mental health makes him a powerful role model. As someone who participates in competitive swimming, I admire not only his physical achievements but also his dedication to self-improvement and his advocacy for mental well-being. Phelps has shown that true success is not just about winning medals but about growing as a person and using your platform to positively impact the world. He’s a reminder that greatness comes from hard work, resilience, and using one’s talents to help others, and that’s why he’s my favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA.

Eden Alaine Memorial Scholarship
One of the most influential family members in my life has been my grandfather. While he hasn’t passed away, the lessons he has taught me have had a profound impact on who I am today. My grandpa has been a mentor, a teacher, and a source of guidance throughout my life. He was the person who first introduced me to working with my hands, teaching me how to fix trucks, work on small engines, and complete various home improvement projects. He always took the time to explain how things worked, instilling in me a deep appreciation for problem-solving and craftsmanship.
As a child, I often found myself in the garage or yard with my grandpa, learning how to use tools and gaining an understanding of how things are put together. It wasn’t just about fixing things; it was about learning to approach challenges with patience and determination. My grandpa’s influence extended beyond just practical skills—he taught me the importance of hard work, responsibility, and persistence. His work ethic and positive attitude in the face of any obstacle shaped my own approach to challenges in life.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from my grandpa is the value of never giving up. He has faced numerous challenges in his life, but he’s always remained strong and resilient. Whether it was overcoming personal hardships or tackling difficult projects, he showed me that success doesn’t come easily—it requires effort, patience, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. These lessons have guided me through various obstacles in my own life, including starting my firewood business at the age of 16. When I faced rejection from other jobs, I channeled the determination I had learned from my grandpa to create my own path, and I found success in doing so.
Beyond teaching me the value of hard work, my grandpa has also shown me the importance of community. He has always been someone who is willing to help others, whether it’s fixing a neighbor’s car or offering assistance with a home repair project. I’ve taken this lesson to heart and applied it in my own life, especially in the way I run my firewood business. I want to help people in my community by providing a service that makes their lives easier, just as my grandpa has done for so many over the years.
While my grandpa is still here, I know that the lessons he has taught me will continue to shape my life for years to come. His influence has helped me become a more resilient, hardworking, and community-focused individual. I am grateful for the time I’ve spent learning from him and look forward to continuing to carry forward the values he has instilled in me.

Koehler Family Trades and Engineering Scholarship
I am passionate about pursuing a degree in HVAC and Electrical Construction because it allows me to combine my love for hands-on work with my desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives. From a young age, I have always been drawn to problem-solving and fixing things, whether it was working on trucks with my grandpa, tinkering with my four-wheeler, or building projects in woodshop. These early experiences sparked my interest in the technical trades, and as I grew older, I realized that HVAC was the perfect fit for my skills and aspirations. It’s a field that not only challenges me intellectually but also offers the opportunity to provide valuable services to people in my community.
My upbringing has played a significant role in shaping who I am today and fueling my passion for pursuing this degree. I grew up in a family where hard work and self-reliance were deeply valued. My parents have been my biggest mentors, teaching me the importance of responsibility, perseverance, and creativity. They encouraged me to think outside the box and to never shy away from challenges. These lessons have shaped my approach to life and my career. When I was rejected from several jobs at the age of 16, instead of giving up, I saw it as an opportunity to create my own path. This led me to start my own firewood business, **Andrew Mottern - Firewood**, where I learned how to manage a business, interact with customers, and provide a service that truly helped people. The success of my firewood business reinforced my belief in the value of hard work and innovation, and it gave me the confidence to pursue a technical career in HVAC.
Throughout my life, I’ve learned that setbacks and challenges are opportunities for growth. When I first started my business, I had doubts about my ability to succeed. I was a 16-year-old running a business with no prior experience, and there were times when I felt overwhelmed. However, I learned to lean on my support system—my family and mentors—and push through the difficult moments. I discovered that perseverance and a positive attitude could turn challenges into valuable learning experiences. These lessons have not only shaped my entrepreneurial journey but also taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and continuous learning.
My experiences have also made me realize the importance of giving back to my community. As I continue to grow in the HVAC field, I want to use my skills to help people in my area save money on energy costs, improve their home comfort, and reduce their environmental impact. I plan to run my own HVAC business, offering energy-efficient solutions that benefit both the environment and my customers. My background in entrepreneurship, combined with the technical skills I’m gaining, will allow me to make a meaningful difference in my community.
Ultimately, pursuing a degree in HVAC and Electrical Construction is more than just a career choice—it’s an opportunity to continue learning, to serve others, and to create a better future for myself and those around me. My upbringing has taught me the value of hard work, and my life experiences have shown me that with determination and a willingness to learn, I can achieve my goals and make a lasting impact.
Lucent Scholarship
My interest in pursuing a career in business and entrepreneurship stems from a combination of personal experiences, challenges, and my natural curiosity about how things work. However, one specific event in my life truly solidified my passion for business and sparked my entrepreneurial drive: starting my own firewood business at the age of 16.
The inspiration for my business venture came after I was rejected from several job opportunities. I had applied for positions at Walmart and Martins but was turned down. Instead of feeling defeated, I saw an opportunity to take matters into my own hands. My parents and I brainstormed ways I could earn money and contribute to my community. After considering a variety of options, we decided that I could start selling firewood. We lived in a rural area where many people used wood burners and outdoor furnaces, and there was a clear demand for seasoned firewood. I quickly got to work, building wood racks, gathering firewood, and promoting my new business through Facebook and local businesses.
That was the moment I realized that I could create something of my own, something that could not only provide for me but also serve others. Running my firewood business taught me valuable lessons in entrepreneurship: how to manage finances, maintain customer relationships, and stay organized. I learned the importance of marketing and customer service and how to handle the day-to-day responsibilities of running a small business. As I continued to grow the business, I also realized how rewarding it was to help others. I provided a product that people needed, and in doing so, I became a trusted local resource for firewood. The satisfaction of helping people while building my own success solidified my passion for business.
This experience was a turning point in my life. It not only fueled my interest in entrepreneurship but also shaped my long-term career goals. I now see business as a way to make a positive impact on my community while creating financial independence for myself. My passion for business and entrepreneurship grew stronger with each challenge I overcame in the firewood business, and I became more determined to continue developing my skills in this field.
Additionally, my decision to pursue a career in HVAC and Electrical Construction further deepened my desire to merge technical skills with entrepreneurship. I’m currently studying HVAC at Jeff Tech, where I am learning the technical aspects of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. I see HVAC as an essential field for improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact, and I want to incorporate this knowledge into my future business. Combining business with a technical trade like HVAC will allow me to offer practical, sustainable solutions to homeowners and businesses, while continuing to run a successful entrepreneurial venture.
The experience of starting and running my firewood business, along with my growing interest in HVAC, has inspired me to pursue a career that combines entrepreneurship with technical expertise. It has shown me the value of hard work, creativity, and problem-solving—qualities that I believe will help me succeed in my chosen field of study and beyond.

By helping people understand how they can save money and reduce their environmental footprint, I hope to create lasting change.

Throughout high school, I’ve had the privilege of learning from many incredible teachers, but one who has had a profound impact on my life is Mr. Hanzley, my woodshop teacher. His passion for teaching, hands-on approach to problem-solving, and genuine care for his students have deeply influenced me and changed how I approach challenges, creativity, and personal growth.
When I first joined Mr. Hanzley’s class, I was eager to learn more about woodworking but didn’t anticipate how much the experience would shape my perspective on life. From day one, he encouraged us to think critically and approach every project with a blend of creativity and precision. His philosophy was simple yet powerful: mistakes are opportunities to learn, and the effort you put into something reflects your character.
One of the most memorable projects in his class was building a custom bed with drawers, a headboard with barn-style sliding doors, and integrated outlets. The project was challenging, requiring precise measurements, attention to detail, and problem-solving at every step. There were moments when I felt frustrated, especially when I made mistakes that set me back. However, Mr. Hanzley never let me give up. He would calmly walk me through what went wrong, helping me see how to fix the issue and improve my technique.
Through his guidance, I learned the importance of patience and perseverance. He showed me that success isn’t about avoiding mistakes but about how you respond to them. This lesson has stayed with me, not just in woodworking but in all areas of my life. Whether I’m managing my firewood business, competing in sports, or facing academic challenges, I now approach setbacks with a mindset of learning and growth.
Mr. Hanzley also emphasized the value of craftsmanship and taking pride in your work. He often reminded us that what we create reflects who we are. This perspective has influenced how I run my business and approach my future career goals. It’s not just about completing tasks but about doing them with integrity and a commitment to excellence.
Beyond the skills and lessons he taught, Mr. Hanzley’s genuine care for his students made a lasting impression. He always took the time to ask how we were doing, offering encouragement and advice when we needed it most. His belief in my potential gave me confidence, inspiring me to push myself further and explore new possibilities.
Mr. Hanzley’s influence has shaped how I approach life—with curiosity, determination, and a focus on growth. His teachings have fueled my passion for hands-on work and inspired me to pursue a career in HVAC and refrigeration, where I can combine technical skills with creativity to solve real-world problems.
In many ways, Mr. Hanzley taught me more than woodworking; he taught me how to approach life with purpose and resilience. His lessons will continue to guide me as I work toward my goals and strive to make a positive impact on the world around me.

One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced was starting my own firewood business at 16. It wasn’t something I had planned for, but after being rejected from several traditional jobs, I had to figure out a new way to earn money and build my future. This experience tested my creativity, resilience, and work ethic, ultimately shaping my personal growth in profound ways.
When I couldn’t find a job, I felt frustrated and unsure of what to do next. Instead of giving up, I brainstormed with my parents and came up with the idea to start a firewood business. At first, the task seemed overwhelming. I had to build wood racks, source firewood, and promote the business—all while balancing school and sports. There were moments when I doubted whether I could handle it all. However, the challenge forced me to step out of my comfort zone and develop problem-solving skills, time management, and perseverance.
Running the business taught me the importance of hard work and determination. It wasn’t just about splitting and delivering wood; it was about learning to interact with customers, manage finances, and overcome unexpected obstacles like weather delays or equipment breakdowns. These experiences have helped me grow into a more confident and capable person. I now see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than as setbacks.
This experience also influenced my outlook on education. It showed me the value of practical, hands-on learning and inspired me to pursue a career in HVAC and refrigeration. My firewood business gave me a taste of what it’s like to work for myself, and I realized that with the right skills and knowledge, I could expand this entrepreneurial spirit into other areas. These programs will equip me with the technical expertise and business acumen I need to start my own HVAC company in the future.
I also want to use my education and skills to make a positive impact on my community. Just as my firewood business provides a valuable service by helping families stay warm during the winter, I want my future HVAC business to contribute to people’s comfort and well-being. Beyond that, I hope to create job opportunities and mentor others, especially young people who may be looking for a path forward, just as I was.
This challenge taught me that with determination and faith, I can overcome obstacles and turn them into opportunities. It also reinforced my belief in the power of education to open doors and create meaningful change. Whether it’s in my local community or on a broader scale, I am committed to using my experiences and education to make a difference in the lives of others.

My faith has been a cornerstone of my life, providing me with guidance, strength, and purpose through both challenges and triumphs. My personal relationship with God has taught me the importance of trust, resilience, and humility—qualities that have shaped who I am and continue to influence the decisions I make.
Throughout my life, I’ve faced moments where my faith has been a source of comfort and clarity. One example was when I started my firewood business. At 16, after being rejected from traditional jobs, I felt uncertain about my next steps. During that time, I leaned on prayer and reflection to find direction. My faith reminded me to trust that God had a plan for me, even if it wasn’t immediately clear. That trust gave me the courage to take a leap and start my own business, which has grown into a rewarding venture.
My faith has also been instrumental in helping me navigate challenges. As a student-athlete, I’ve experienced setbacks, whether it’s an underwhelming performance at a swim meet or the stress of balancing school, sports, and work. In those moments, I turn to prayer and scripture for reassurance. A favorite verse of mine is Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse reminds me that no challenge is insurmountable with God’s help. When I feel overwhelmed, I rely on my faith to stay grounded and find the strength to persevere.
Faith has also taught me the importance of serving others and living with integrity. I strive to reflect these values in my interactions with customers, teammates, and the community. For instance, running my firewood business isn’t just about earning money—it’s about providing a service that helps families stay warm during the winter. This mindset stems from my belief in treating others with kindness and respect, as God calls us to do.
As I look toward my future career in HVAC and refrigeration, I know my faith will continue to play a central role. Starting and running my own business will come with challenges, but my faith will provide the strength and wisdom to overcome them. I also believe my faith will guide me to make ethical decisions, treat my employees and customers with fairness, and prioritize giving back to the community.
In addition, my faith inspires me to approach work with a sense of purpose and gratitude. I see my career as an opportunity to use my skills and talents to make a positive impact. Whether it’s helping a family restore comfort to their home or mentoring others in the field, I aim to reflect God’s love and compassion in everything I do.
In every stage of my life, my faith has been a source of strength, clarity, and inspiration. I know it will continue to guide me as I pursue my goals, face new challenges, and strive to make a difference in the lives of others.

Playing sports throughout high school presents many challenges, but it also offers invaluable lessons that shape personal growth and character. As a student-athlete, I’ve faced obstacles ranging from managing time effectively to overcoming setbacks in performance, but these experiences have taught me resilience, discipline, and the value of teamwork.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as a student-athlete is balancing academics, athletics, and other commitments. Practices, meets, and competitions often consume hours of my day, leaving limited time for homework, studying, and other responsibilities. For example, during swim season, early morning practices are followed by a full day of school and then evening practices or meets. Finding time to rest, complete assignments, and prepare for exams requires careful planning and prioritization. I’ve learned to manage my time efficiently by staying organized, setting goals, and avoiding procrastination. These skills have not only helped me succeed in sports but have also improved my academic performance and prepared me for future challenges.
Another challenge is the physical and mental strain that comes with being a student-athlete. Practices are demanding, and the pressure to perform at meets or events can be overwhelming. I’ve had seasons where I didn’t meet my personal goals or struggled to keep up with my teammates. These moments were discouraging, but they taught me the importance of perseverance and maintaining a positive mindset. I learned to focus on small improvements and trust the process rather than letting setbacks define me. This lesson has helped me in all areas of my life, teaching me that growth often comes from facing adversity head-on.
Being a student-athlete also comes with the challenge of balancing personal goals with team responsibilities. In sports like swimming and track, individual performances matter, but the team’s success depends on everyone contributing their best. This dynamic has taught me how to work collaboratively, support my teammates, and put the group’s needs ahead of my own. For example, during a relay event, it’s not just about my performance—it’s about ensuring the entire team feels encouraged and prepared to succeed.
The lessons I’ve learned from being a student-athlete are numerous. Time management, resilience, and teamwork are just the beginning. I’ve also learned the importance of discipline and consistency. Showing up to practice every day, even when I’m tired or busy, has reinforced the value of commitment. Additionally, sports have taught me how to set realistic goals and work steadily toward achieving them, a mindset that I apply to my academics and personal pursuits.
Perhaps the most important lesson is the value of community. My teammates and coaches have become like family, offering support, encouragement, and motivation. They’ve shown me that success isn’t just about individual achievements—it’s about lifting each other up and celebrating collective victories.
Playing sports throughout high school has been challenging, but it’s also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The lessons I’ve learned as a student-athlete will stay with me, shaping my character and preparing me for the future.

My name is Andrew Mottern, and I am a senior in high school, a business owner, and a dedicated student-athlete. Balancing academics, athletics, and running my firewood business has taught me the value of hard work, discipline, and time management—skills that have profoundly shaped my future career goals.
As a swimmer and track and field athlete, sports have been a constant in my life. I’ve competed in swimming for four years and track for all four years of high school. Being a student-athlete has taught me the importance of perseverance and teamwork. Practices and competitions often push me beyond my comfort zone, but the challenges have taught me to stay focused on my goals, even in the face of setbacks. For example, during a difficult swim season, I learned how to reframe my mindset, focusing on small, consistent improvements rather than just the end result. That lesson in resilience carries over into every part of my life.
Athletics has also strengthened my leadership skills. In swimming and track, teamwork is essential. Supporting my teammates, staying positive during tough meets, and learning how to motivate others have shown me how to work collaboratively—an essential skill I’ll carry into my future career.
My athletic experiences have shaped my ambition to pursue a career in HVAC and refrigeration. I plan to attend Jeff Tech to study HVAC and Electrical Construction while continuing business management courses. Athletics taught me the discipline needed to work hard and develop new skills, which I will apply to mastering these technical trades. Eventually, I plan to start my own HVAC business, where I can combine my entrepreneurial experience from running my firewood business with the technical knowledge I’ll gain in trade school.
Outside of sports, I have several interests that keep me grounded and motivated. One of my biggest passions is running my firewood business, which I started when I was 16. I enjoy the process of building something from the ground up, from managing deliveries to interacting with customers. It’s taught me responsibility and problem-solving skills that will benefit me in any career.
I also enjoy outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, and spending time with my dog. Fixing trucks with my grandpa and working on my four-wheeler are hobbies that allow me to unwind while also developing my mechanical skills. Another creative outlet is fly tying, where I combine patience and precision to create custom fishing flies.
My experiences as a student-athlete and business owner have shaped who I am today and given me the tools to succeed in the future. Athletics has instilled in me the values of perseverance, teamwork, and discipline, while my interests outside of sports keep me balanced and driven. Whether I’m in the pool, on the track, or running my business, I’m always working toward my goals with a commitment to growth and self-improvement.

One coach who profoundly impacted my life is Mr. Gressler, my swim coach and former boss when I worked as a lifeguard. His mentorship extended beyond the pool, shaping my character and teaching me values that I carry with me every day.
During one swim season, I hit a rough patch. A series of poor performances left me frustrated and doubting my abilities. I felt like I was letting my team down and began questioning whether I deserved to be on the roster. My self-confidence took a major hit, and it started to affect my focus, motivation, and even my enjoyment of the sport.
Coach Gressler noticed the change in my attitude and took the time to pull me aside after practice one evening. Instead of focusing on what I was doing wrong, he helped me reframe my perspective. He reminded me that success isn’t measured by perfection but by resilience and effort. He encouraged me to stop fixating on the end results and instead set small, achievable goals that I could work toward each day.
Under his guidance, I began to shift my mindset. I started celebrating small victories, like improving my turn technique or shaving fractions of a second off my lap times. These incremental improvements reminded me that progress is a process, and even the smallest steps forward matter. Little by little, I regained my confidence and, with it, my love for the sport. By the end of the season, I was performing better than I had before the slump, and I realized how much of that was due to the patience and encouragement Coach Gressler had shown me.
His influence didn’t end with swimming. He instilled in me the values of teamwork, kindness, and hard work, traits I strive to embody every day. Like David, Coach Gressler led by example, always showing up with a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.
I exemplify these traits by applying the lessons I’ve learned to every area of my life. In my firewood business, I’ve had to overcome challenges, stay disciplined, and work collaboratively with my brother to deliver excellent service to customers. Running my own business has taught me the importance of perseverance and responsibility, qualities Coach Gressler reinforced during my time as an athlete.
In addition, as a lifeguard, I’ve prioritized teamwork and supporting others, especially when new hires or younger lifeguards needed guidance. I often found myself reflecting on the ways Coach Gressler supported me and tried to mirror his patience and positivity when working with others.
Coach Gressler showed me what it means to be resilient, supportive, and determined—qualities I strive to carry forward in everything I do. Like David, he had a way of bringing out the best in people, and I aim to live by that example in my own life. Whether in sports, work, or my personal relationships, I’m committed to lifting others up and persevering through challenges, just as Coach Gressler taught me.

I want to go to a trade school because it offers a practical, efficient, and focused pathway to achieving my career goals. I’ve always been someone who learns best through hands-on experiences, and trade schools specialize in providing that kind of education. For me, the opportunity to gain real-world skills in high-demand fields like HVAC/Refrigeration and Electrical Construction is invaluable. These programs align perfectly with my long-term goal of starting my own HVAC business, and trade school provides the ideal foundation to make that dream a reality.
One of the biggest reasons I’ve chosen trade school is the emphasis on practical learning. Unlike traditional colleges, which often focus heavily on theory, trade schools provide direct, job-specific training. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, whether it’s running my firewood business, fixing equipment, or building projects in woodshop class. I thrive in environments where I can see the immediate results of my work and learn by doing. Trade school’s hands-on approach will prepare me to enter the workforce with confidence, knowing I have the technical skills and experience to succeed.
Trade school also appeals to me because it’s a faster and more affordable way to build a career. The programs are typically shorter than a traditional four-year college, allowing me to graduate and start working sooner. This efficiency is important to me because I want to start building experience in my chosen field as quickly as possible. Additionally, trade school is a cost-effective option, which means I can gain the skills I need without accumulating unnecessary debt. As someone who is already managing my own business, I understand the importance of financial responsibility, and trade school supports that mindset.
Another reason I want to attend trade school is the direct pathway it offers into high-demand industries. HVAC and electrical work are essential trades that offer stable, well-paying job opportunities. By enrolling in programs that focus on these fields, I’m setting myself up for a career that is both rewarding and secure. Trade school programs also often include opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, and networking with industry professionals, which will help me gain valuable experience and connections as I work toward my goals.
My ultimate ambition is to own and operate my own HVAC business, and trade school is a critical step in that journey. The technical training I’ll receive at Jeff Tech will give me the skills to excel in the field, while the business knowledge I’m gaining through additional studies will help me manage and grow my company. By combining these two areas of expertise, I’ll be able to build a successful business that reflects my hard work and dedication.
Overall, I see trade school as the perfect fit for my goals, learning style, and future plans. It’s a place where I can develop the skills I need to succeed, connect with others in my field, and build a foundation for a fulfilling career. I’m excited to take this next step and make the most of the opportunities that trade school offers.

My father figure is my dad, and he has played a monumental role in shaping who I am today. He is not just my father but also my mentor, teacher, and biggest supporter. What makes him so special is the way he has consistently led by example, showing me the importance of hard work, responsibility, and integrity. He’s taught me lessons that go far beyond words, instilling values that guide me in every part of my life, from running my business to planning for my future.
One of the most impactful lessons my dad has taught me is the value of hard work. From a young age, I watched him put in long hours to provide for our family and ensure that we had everything we needed. Whether it was working on a project at home, helping a neighbor, or tackling challenges at his job, he always gave 100% effort. Seeing his dedication inspired me to adopt the same mindset in my own life. When I started my firewood business, I relied on the work ethic he instilled in me to overcome obstacles and build something I could be proud of.
Another quality that makes my dad special is his practicality and resourcefulness. He’s the kind of person who can fix just about anything and find a solution to almost any problem. Growing up, I loved watching him work on cars, fix things around the house, and tackle projects with confidence. Those experiences taught me to think critically and not shy away from challenges. Whether I’m working on my four-wheeler or planning how to grow my business, I try to approach every situation with the same level-headed determination that he has always shown.
What truly sets my dad apart is his unwavering support and belief in me. When I came up with the idea to start my firewood business, he was one of the first people to encourage me. He helped me brainstorm ideas, gave me advice on how to get started, and even taught me practical skills like building wood racks. Knowing that he believed in my abilities gave me the confidence to take the leap and launch the business. To this day, he continues to be a source of guidance and encouragement, always willing to lend a hand or share his wisdom.
Beyond the lessons and skills he’s taught me, what I admire most about my dad is his character. He’s a man of integrity who treats everyone with respect and kindness. He’s shown me the importance of being honest, reliable, and compassionate, no matter the situation. These values have become a cornerstone of how I conduct myself in my business and personal life.
In many ways, my dad has shaped the person I am and the person I strive to be. His example has taught me how to work hard, think practically, and treat others with respect. I’m incredibly grateful for everything he’s done for me and the lessons he continues to teach me every day. He’s not just my father—he’s my role model and someone I deeply admire.

WinnerI have chosen to pursue my education through a trade school because it provides the ideal balance of practical training, career-focused learning, and affordability. As someone who thrives in hands-on environments and has a clear vision for my future, trade school offers everything I need to achieve my goals. My ultimate ambition is to start my own HVAC business, and the specialized programs at Jeff Tech in HVAC/Refrigeration and Electrical Construction will equip me with the skills, certifications, and experience necessary to make that dream a reality.
One of the key reasons I’m drawn to trade school is the opportunity for hands-on learning. I’ve always been the type of person who learns best by doing. Whether it’s running my firewood business, working on trucks with my grandpa, or building projects in my woodshop class, I’ve found that hands-on tasks not only teach me the most but also keep me motivated and engaged. Trade schools emphasize this type of learning, with real-world applications integrated into every aspect of their programs. This approach will prepare me to tackle challenges in the workforce confidently and competently.
Another advantage of trade school is its focus on high-demand careers. HVAC and electrical work are essential industries that provide stable, well-paying job opportunities. By enrolling in these programs, I’m investing in a field with strong growth potential and a high likelihood of long-term success. The training I’ll receive will be directly applicable to the job market, allowing me to transition seamlessly into a career after graduation. Additionally, trade schools often include opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, and industry networking, which will help me gain valuable experience and build connections within my chosen field.
Cost is another significant factor in my decision. Compared to traditional four-year colleges, trade schools are far more affordable, offering shorter programs that allow students to graduate and start earning sooner. This is especially important to me as I’m already running a business and planning for my financial future. By choosing trade school, I can avoid the heavy debt that often comes with higher education while still gaining the skills and qualifications I need. This financial flexibility also gives me the opportunity to continue my education in Business Management and Marketing on the side, further preparing me to run my own company.
My long-term goal is to start and grow a successful HVAC business, and trade school is the first step in that journey. The combination of technical skills from Jeff Tech and the business knowledge I’m acquiring through additional courses will give me a strong foundation for success. Running my firewood business has already taught me valuable lessons in responsibility, time management, and customer service, and I’m eager to apply those skills to a larger venture in the future. Trade school will give me the tools I need to make that transition and build a business I can be proud of.
Ultimately, I see trade school as the perfect path for someone like me who values practical skills, hands-on learning, and a clear connection between education and career goals. I’m excited to take this step and work toward a future that reflects my passion, hard work, and ambition.
