    Undiscovered Brilliance Scholarship for African-Americans
My name is Andrew Okosun and I am a passionate, enthusiastic, and motivated person who recently opened up a new business. I am a current student at University of Nevada, Reno and I am in the process of obtaining my Bachelor’s of Finance. I currently reside in Reno, NV but I am originally from Lagos, Nigeria. I immigrated to the USA from Nigeria around 10 years ago and became a US citizen in 2019. Growing up in Nigeria was very challenging but I truly believe it inspired me to become the person that I am today. I cherish my Nigerian roots and am very proud to be an African man. My mother worked extremely hard as a single mom to support my 2 sisters and myself and always made sure that we prioritized our education. There were many days when we were not able to eat a meal and we often had to walk many miles to obtain fresh water. In spite of these difficult conditions, I always remained committed to achieving my goals and bettering myself. I obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Abuja in Accounting and my Associates degree in Accounting at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, NV. I continue to seek higher education here within the USA and understand that this is the basis for my continued success. I recently opened a courier service here in Reno, NV called Community Courier Service. We specialize in delivering medications and products to clients in rural areas of Nevada that otherwise do not have access to these services. I have always dreamt of having my own business where I am able to promote a work environment that is fair, positive, caring towards employees, and promotes a good cause. Northern Nevada has a rapidly aging population and many of these seniors reside in areas that are considered “rural” or “outside of city limits” and therefore have difficulty obtaining products that many of us take for granted. My partner is a hospice nurse and I was inspired to start this business after many conversations with her about the major challenges of her rural patients receiving their medications or other products in a timely manner compared to those living in the city. Hospice patients are a vulnerable portion of the population who require medications to be delivered in a timely manner in order to ensure comfort and quality of life during end of life care. I believe that all people regardless of their location deserve to have access to these medications and services. My goal is to provide community-based services at a fair and reasonable price to the members of our Northern Nevada community. I hope to be able to provide for myself and my family and become financially independent. As a black business owner, I understand that there will be struggles that I will face throughout this difficult journey. However, I believe I have the strength and perseverance to make my business a successful one and provide these much-needed services to my Northern Nevada community.
