Andrew Harris (b. 2002) is a portrait photographer originally from Monrovia, Liberia and currently based in Chicago. His work in the medium deals with representation, social justice, and cultural memory. Praised by publications such as The New York Times, the National YoungArts Foundation, and Lenscratch, Harris's work weaves through speculative and social realism in capturing the deep beauty and intricate narratives within the Black diaspora.
As a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Harris has continuously tried to uncover the transformative potentials that photography can bear both in healing and community. His most recent projects consider the historical and cultural surfaces of Liberia and use visual narrative as a practice towards reparation and reconnection with the past.
Andrew’s extensive experience includes internships at the Design Museum of Chicago, Chicago Filmmakers, and Lou Jones Studio. He has also worked as a studio manager and teaching assistant at Tufts University. His projects ranges from organizing exhibitions to the creation of important multimedia content, demonstrating his versatile skills and dedication to ostering creative communities.
Among other accolades, he has been recognized by the Lenscratch Student Prize Awards as one of the top student photographers to watch and is a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts. He uses art to weave complex tapestries of identity, culture, and hope. With his camera, he builds a home for the Black future, open to a rich narrative of belonging and strength into which viewers can enter.
