      Special Delivery of Dreams Scholarship
Hailing from Albany, GA, I was faced with the challenge of low potential and economic struggle. As a young businessperson, I often felt as if I had big dreams but no clear path to achieve them. Access to business training and mentorship possibilities was difficult to obtain, and I had to figure out how to navigate challenges on my own. One of my biggest turning points was when I competed in the Flex Entrepreneurial Competition at 4C Academy. As a 10th grader competing with 12th graders, I had to prove myself worthy of being in the room. Through diligent work and persistence, I finished second and won $3,000, showing me that my ideas had value. That experience showed me that success is not based on where one begins but the work one does at it. That experience further motivated my passion to bring opportunity to others like me who may lack guidance and resources necessary for them to excel. I hope this scholarship will allow me to advance my studies in entrepreneurship to establish my restaurant and catering business with the right skills and knowledge. Most significantly, it will enable me to create employment, mentorship, and skill-building opportunities for young people in underrepresented communities. I want to share financial literacy, business operations, and entrepreneurship so that others can shatter cycles of poverty and build generational wealth. As a first-generation college graduate, I understand how difficult it is to navigate spaces where few people look like you or share your experiences. Due to this scholarship, I can continue my education without financial concerns, which will allow me to focus on my long-term goal of paying it forward. I do not want my business to be simply a source of income but a venue where young people can learn by doing, develop leadership skills, and gain from mentorship that will allow them to achieve their own goals. Aside from my own goals, I also believe in the potential of education and hobbies to motivate the youth and open their minds. One such unusual but interesting way is through philately—the collection and study of postage stamps. With the advent of the digital age, stamp collecting might sound archaic, but it is indeed a great way to learn about history, art, and cultures from around the world. To encourage youth in philately, I would link it to their interest. For instance, if one is interested in sports, he can collect stamps related to Olympic games or stamps that have famous people. If it is travel, then look at stamps from different countries and how their traditions are and landmarks. Another way of doing this is through use of social media by highlighting unique collections and engaging the public, like asking them to search for the oldest or the rarest stamp. Schools and youth organizations could incorporate stamp collecting as part of history or geography class, making it an engaging learning experience. Underlying all of my goals—whether entrepreneurship, mentoring, or inspiring others through education—is the desire to open doors for those who have been underrepresented. I would like to be an example that success is possible, no matter where you come from, and that with the right mindset, education, and support, we can break cycles of poverty and build brighter futures. This scholarship will not only help me reach my goals but also enable me to bring others up, showing that success is not just personal achievement but making a lasting impact.
      Phoenix Opportunity Award
The entrepreneurial spirit is strong for me because I am the first college graduate in my family. To me, obtaining a degree is not just about personal success; it shatters generational chains, opens doors, and sets a legacy of economic security for my family and community. Economic hardship and the unavailability of resources constrained so many individuals when I was younger. That’s why I’m determined to not only succeed in business but to use my success to uplift others who face similar challenges. My goal is to own a restaurant and catering business that goes beyond serving food—I want to create jobs, provide mentorship, and offer training programs to help young people in underrepresented communities develop skills in business and financial literacy. Being a first-generation student means I’ve had to figure things out on my own, from applying to college to seeking out resources, and that experience has shaped my resilience, adaptability, and leadership skills. Entrepreneurship is not merely about profiting; it's about creating opportunities and enabling others. Since I didn't have a recipe for success in my childhood, I wish to make one available for the future generation. My own experience as a first-generation student demonstrates that with the correct mind-set and access to education, we are able to break the cycle of poverty and establish enduring change. I hope that my success inspires and motivates others and proves to them that where one originates does not decide where one shall end.
SCFU Scholarship for HBCU Business Students
My name is Andrew Dawson, but I would like to go by Drew. I am a high school senior who is interested in entrepreneurship and hopes to utilize business to empower marginalized communities. I am from Albany, GA, and have seen firsthand how economic struggle and a lack of resources can inhibit opportunities, especially for Black youth. There are too many capable, industrious people around my community who never have a chance to make their dreams come true simply because they don't have access to the support, mentorship, or funds they require. I believe that economic empowerment through entrepreneurship and innovation is the most potent means of breaking these poverty cycles and building lasting change. Sharing access to opportunity is arguably the strongest means of raising up a community. Too many in poor communities are relegated to whatever job is available, with or without any interest or desire, because survival comes first and dreams second. But that does not necessarily need to happen with entrepreneurship—it generates jobs, creates wealth, and allows people to take control of their own futures. That is why I plan on owning a restaurant and opening up a catering business, not just to feed people but to feed my community. My goal is to provide job opportunities, career advice, and job training to the youth who lack a clear pathway to success. I hope to be able to have an establishment where they can acquire essential business and life skills, whether they are cooks, business leaders, or leaders in other fields. Other than providing jobs, I want my company to be an institution where financial literacy and entrepreneurship are taught. There are many in my community with the drive and ambition to excel but lacking the skills on how to start or operate a business. I hope to impact through mentorship opportunities, workshops, and internships on budgeting, business operation, and marketing. By enabling others with these skills, I hope to create a new generation of entrepreneurs that will continue to reinvest back into our community. My passion for business and entrepreneurship was solidified when I took part in the Flex Entrepreneurial Competition at 4C Academy during my 10th grade. I competed against 12th graders, finished second, and won $3,000. What I learned from that experience is that I can turn my ideas into reality, but more significantly, that young people of any background can achieve if given opportunities. It instilled in me a desire to not only set up a successful venture for myself but to create opportunities for others to do the same. My long-term vision is to expand outside my own business and invest in underrepresented founders with large ideas. I want to create programs that provide capital, mentorship, and networking to help others bring their business ideas to life. Economic empowerment is achieved by lifting as you climb, and I am committed to using my success to drive social equity and justice. Entrepreneurship is not only a career to me—it's a means of creating concrete, lasting influence. By investing in my community, building opportunities, and inspiring others to have big dreams, I want to leave a legacy that shows success is not about personal wealth but about making the people around you richer.
      Bear Fan Scholarship
For me, the perfect conclusion of “The Bear” would be, Carmy embracing the balance between his passion for food and life outside of it, learning how not to control all aspects but to put his trust in his team and enjoy the highs and lows of life. The restaurant grows to be a beautiful high-end yet modest establishment where his growth as a person and cook is reflected. He no longer has to bear the burden of success alone; he learns to rely on other people and delegate that through the course of this process builds a team that looks like family. Sydney continues to blossom as a chef and leader into her destiny in this restaurant. She finds a way to balance her ambition with the sensibility of the place, differentiating herself as being able to thrive without losing that communal sense that Carmy always struggled with. She takes on full partnership in the restaurant, gaining consistent control, even the chance to chase her future dreams, knowing that she is now capable of standing up to whatever challenge may come her way. Richie comes through in the long, hard journey, finally becoming the person he was supposed to be. He gains stability, perhaps with a new career, but one that gives him a purpose that goes beyond the kitchen. He can still pop in for advice but lives out of the chaos in an entirely different way. The restaurant is allowed to flourish not because it is perfect, but because it is a sort of togetherness, the growth and redemption earned from all the hard work. It becomes a family for a team that finds individual paths to rise because they suffered together to make it happen.
      LGBTQ+ Wellness in Action Scholarship
Well, in a sense, my mental fitness and my physical fitness belong to me. Without these forms, I can be assured of not being the best, be it school, the fight for scholarships, or a dream to become an entrepreneur. If I don't feel mentally fit, stress comes in and makes it difficult for me to get motivated. If I am not physically okay, then I just get tired of long days of studying, applying for scholarships, and handling the rest. This includes taking care of myself, not only to and endure today’s challenges but to help ensure my ability to keep moving forward and build the future I desire. One other factor that often bothers me is iconic balancing. As a low-income student, extra pressure mounts when there is no financial safety net—each opportunity has to count. Scholarships are not just helpful; they become essential in this situation. Therefore, the burden lies with being able to juggle academics, applications, and any other opportunities that might get me ahead. But this pressure can also add a lot of stress. Sometimes, it feels as if there is no room for mistakes, and that can compromise my mental health. To me, there are some challenges—the first is a matter of time. Forgive me, but squishing my own life into the spaces left by school, responsibilities, and preparation for my future just leaves me with very few chances to engage in personal indulgences. I know how important looking after oneself is, yet when deadlines loom ahead, and rest is considered a luxury, let alone taking walks or exercises. That, however, becomes subtle punishment; letting myself go down into balance will actually make the days ahead seem terribly hard to get by. When I am the least able, nothing seems to feel easy anymore; a simple task would feel a chore for me. That’s why I try to find small ways to take care of myself-whether getting enough sleep, eating right, or just taking a break when I need it. Seeing people give up because they feel they have no other way out is something I used to see growing up in Albany, GA. It made CW feel like it is actually easy to be caught up in life's struggles and let life rule the way. That is not the future that I want. I want to break that chain, and I know that I must begin with unerring care of my mind and my body to make sure I can stay on task and motivated. Success, I remind myself, does not just come from working hard but also once my head is in it and I am physically fit to carry on. Wellness really matters to me at the end of the day because my future is on it. I want to build something for myself-whether it is through college, entrepreneurship, or both-and I cannot do that while I do not take care of myself along the way. The challenges I face while a student and keeping up with my mental and physical health are quite real, but none of them shall deter me. I have learned: self-care is not a distraction to success, it is part of it. And no matter how busy or stressed I get, I have to remember: my self-care is what helps me reach my goals.
      William A. Lewis Scholarship
My name is Andrew Dawson, and I am set to graduate high school in May 2025. The journey that has led me here has been filled with unimaginable adversity. I bear a burden that many may never fully understand. Raised in a one-parent home, I struggled to adapt to the harsh realities of living in poverty. Stability was always just out of reach as my family was forced to move frequently. While my family was a great support system, they also struggled to survive, and I often felt like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. The constant instability took a toll on me emotionally and mentally, leaving me with an insecurity that never seemed to fade. I also face a different kind of struggle. As a Black, gay male, I’ve had to navigate multiple layers of adversity that have compounded my challenges. In a society that often stereotypes, marginalizes, and expects Black men to remain invisible, I have had to carry the weight of these societal expectations and prejudices. Being both Black and gay, I found myself torn between two identities that society pushed to the margins. In one space, I was rejected for my race, and in another, I was isolated for my sexuality. Constantly feeling like I didn’t fit in anywhere, I lived my life on edge, hiding parts of myself to avoid judgment or rejection. As the youngest in my family, I often felt overlooked and neglected. The emotional and mental strain of having to be strong and resilient in the face of these challenges sometimes made my struggles feel invisible. I bottled up my pain, unsure of how to express the hurt I was feeling. The weight of my circumstances, combined with the pressure to be exceptional, often felt like a burden I could never shake. The intersection of my Blackness, queerness, and growing up in a single-parent home created a storm of emotional and mental struggles that often left me feeling overwhelmed. Despite everything, I’ve continued to push forward. I will graduate high school a year early in May 2025 with a GPA of 3.6, determined to prove to myself and the world that I am capable of more than my circumstances. However, even in this achievement, emotional scars remain, and I still carry the weight of my struggles. The fear that higher education will be out of reach due to financial limitations is a constant concern. Without financial support, I am uncertain if college will even be possible for me. A scholarship is not just a financial opportunity—it’s a lifeline. It would provide me with the means to leave behind the daily stress of survival and allow me to truly live. It would give me the chance to heal from my past, be myself without the constant weight of financial worry, and finally begin to build the future I have always dreamed of. I’ve fought hard to get to this point, and this scholarship would allow me to honor the sacrifices my family has made and the challenges I’ve overcome as a Black, gay male. It would be the opportunity to create a future I’ve longed for, one where I am not just surviving but thriving. At this time, I have not yet chosen a college, but I am determined to continue my education and pursue a degree that will allow me to give back to my community. Thank you for considering me for this transformative opportunity. Your support would mean everything in helping me achieve my dreams and forge a path toward success.

My name is Andrew Dawson, but most people call me Drew. I’m a high school senior with big dreams of becoming an entrepreneur, but before I could focus on building my future, I had to fight to even have one. Mental health has played a major role in my life, shaping me into the person I am today. When I was in fifth grade, I attempted suicide. At that age, I didn’t have the words to explain what I was feeling—I just knew that the weight of everything was too much. I felt alone, like I had no one to turn to, and like my existence didn’t matter. Looking back, it’s heartbreaking to think that such a young version of myself believed that ending it all was the only way out. But in that moment, I truly thought I had no other choice. Surviving that experience changed me in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time. I realized how much I had been holding inside, how much pain I had been carrying without letting anyone see. Growing up in a community where mental health wasn’t openly discussed, I never felt like I could talk about what I was going through. I was expected to be strong, to push through, to never let anything break me. But the truth is, ignoring pain doesn’t make it disappear—it only makes it heavier. As I got older, I began to understand the importance of mental health. I learned that my feelings were valid and that struggling didn’t make me weak. I found ways to cope, like writing, listening to music, and surrounding myself with people who truly care about me. I also learned that asking for help isn’t something to be ashamed of—it’s a sign of strength. Even now, I still have hard days, but I remind myself of how far I’ve come. I remind myself that I am here for a reason. Surviving my darkest moment gave me a new perspective on life. It made me more empathetic, more determined, and more aware of how important it is to check in on the people around me. I know what it’s like to feel alone, and I never want anyone else to feel that way. That’s why I make an effort to be there for others, to listen, and to let people know they matter. My experience with mental health has also fueled my ambition. I have dreams of being successful, of building something for myself, and of proving that my story doesn’t end in tragedy. I want to create spaces—whether through my future business or just in my personal life—where people feel safe, supported, and understood. I want to show that no matter how dark things get, there is always a way forward. This is my story. I am not defined by what I went through, but it is a part of my journey. And that journey has taught me that life is worth fighting for.
Sarah F. Watson and James E. Dashiell Scholarship
Charity is important to me because it’s a way to connect with others and give back to the community that has supported me. I believe that everyone deserves an opportunity to succeed, no matter where they come from or what challenges they face. Giving back isn't just about donations; it's about time, effort, and being there for others when they need it the most. Whether it’s helping someone learn a new skill, volunteering at a local shelter, or just offering a listening ear, I believe every act of kindness counts. In the future, I intend to give back by using the knowledge and resources I gain to help others, especially those who face obstacles that make it harder for them to reach their potential. I want to contribute to educational programs, support initiatives that uplift underprivileged communities, and continue to volunteer in meaningful ways. Ultimately, I want to create opportunities for others the same way that opportunities have been created for me. By helping others, I believe we can all make the world a better place, one step at a time.
      Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
Growing up in Albany, GA, a city in which opportunity sometimes runs thin and challenge can become a constant, I have been forced to become a frugal individual when it comes to my financials. As a college student living at a low income, I have long calculated my dollars carefully, getting a little farther with a little less for lunch, for example, budgeting for school expenses without becoming overwhelmed with a sea of debt. I have acquired most of my financial training through practice—how to make ends meet and go a little farther with a little less. But I know I have a lot to learn in preparing for the future I dream about. A lesson I have gained to date is budgeting and its value in life. I have been forced to make mental budgets in an attempt to monitor my expenses and prioritize necessity over desire. It’s not ideal, but it’s a start. I have gained an awareness, too, that savings and credit can make a big contribution to financial success, even though I have not yet been in a position to explore getting involved in both in a meaningful manner. For me at present, my concern is becoming educated about smart financial planning, including having an awareness of student loans, credit, and investment options for emerging entrepreneurs such as I. My dreams extend past financial security for my family and me — I dream about becoming a restaurateur. That will involve knowing about financials in and out, including budgeting for workers and machines and planning for long-term growth, and managing daily expenses and planning for long-term growth. Learning about financial planning will be important in seeing my restaurant not only launch but thrive. I know many companies fold due to poor financial planning, and I don’t want to become part of that group. To become ready for such a future, I will formally and informally educate myself when it comes to finance. I will utilize any financial literacy courses my college will have and seek out mentors who can pass down information regarding managing expenses for a business. I have been searching for grants, scholarships, and small-business loans specifically for new Black entrepreneurs, too. I must have access to alternative financial sources for my dream and not fall into unviable debt. Aside from my entrepreneurial dream, I hope to break my family and me out of financial struggle, too. Many in my community don’t have an opportunity to learn about wealth creation, investing, and financial freedom. I hope to become part of a community that not only enriches my life but teaches that information, too. I will have financial awareness, and I will make wiser financial decisions, investing in my goals and me, and positively contributing to my community in positive avenues. Ultimately, my financial journey has molded me into an individual with a deep value for adaptability and thinking creatively about finances. I realize, nevertheless, that I have even more to learn and yet even more work to do in creating my ideal life. With correct information and tools, I have no uncertainty in my mind that I can make my dream a reality and establish lasting financial security for me and for my community.
      S.O.P.H.I.E Scholarship
Seeing the struggles that surrounded many persons I call my people in Albany, Georgia, was a childhood experience I will never forget. Youth in my community were not seeing many opportunities due to scarce resources. I always wished to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me, despite my shyness. That led me into many programs surrounding giving back and uplifting others. My strides include volunteering for local food drives and activities. From this, I learned the importance of simply being there to help. Participating in the distribution of meals to needy families reminded me that small gestures go a long way, and it ignited a fire inside me to do more. I have also contributed to other cleanup programs around the community to beautify places left unattended. I love the sense of seeing neighbors come together to restore them. That was empowering and deepened my belief in the collective effort. Now, in the future, I have a lot in mind to contribute to the shaping of a better tomorrow for my community. My dream is to own a restaurant, one that would provide more than just good food—I'd like it to be a community involvement center. I aim to start mentoring programs for young individuals who are interested in entrepreneurship, culinary arts, or hospitality. I hope to show them that success can happen for anyone regardless of where they are starting off from by providing mentorship and sharing my journey with them. I'm additionally wanting to collaborate with local organizations to host food drives, job fairs, and community events to forge a sense of togetherness while offering necessities to others. I believe that small businesses have a responsibility to uplift the communities they serve, and I’m committed to.
      Willie Mae Rawls Scholarship
My name is Andrew Dawson, and I'm an Albany, Georgia native, a city that instilled in me a strong work ethic, faith, and a determination to become my best self. As a Black, gay male growing up in a rough city, I have experienced obstacles that could have convinced me I wasn't enough and my aspirations not worth it. But through them, faith has been my rock, steadying me in times of uncertainty and convincing me I have a purpose larger than any challenge I will ever face. That rock kept me strong, convincing me I can beat any odds and live out my purpose according to God’s will. Faith, for me, isn't about my survival, but about service, love, and care for others. It’s not about survival in my trials but about taking my experiences and using them to serve and comfort others and serve as a source of hope for my community. I believe that God puts a dream in our hearts for a purpose, and for me, my dream is entrepreneurship. I have dreamed about having my own restaurant, a place not only for food but for community, joy, and a feeling of belonging. I hope my business will be a reflection of God’s grace and a demonstration of its power and resilience Through my experiences, I have discovered that faith isn't enough in and of itself; it must have actions to follow through with it. Living my faith involves living purposefully, with heart, and with a servant's heart. With my restaurant, I hope to make it a community-supporting establishment that not only brings jobs, mentorship, and opportunity to my community but helps me to give back to a community that helped mold me. I hope to provide jobs, mentor, and opportunity to those who, like me, have fought and simply need someone to believe in them. I hope to use my platform to join with community service programs, serve meals to underprivileged families, and sponsor youth programs in my community. In each part of the business, my faith will motivate my desire to make a positive impact. What inspires me most is knowing that when we move in faith, we're not working for ourselves—we're part of a larger picture. I hope to motivate others through my life, proving success can happen when you trust in God, work tirelessly, and stand strong in your values. I hope my life will serve as a testimony that society doesn't have its mold for success, and regardless of your background, identity, and trials, God wants a purpose for your life, and with faith and determination, nothing is out of your reach. Faith isn’t perfection, but a positive path and whatever path I believe that God guides me onto. I realize my path will never be an easy one, but I will have faith in the path and follow whatever I believe I have been guided to go down. By living my purpose and having faith, I hope not only to become a successful businessman, but make a lasting impact in everyone’s life that I touch. I hope to serve and care for them through actions and remind them faith can move mountains.
      Grand Oaks Enterprises LLC Scholarship
My name is Andrew Dawson, and I'm a native of Albany, Georgia, a city that instilled in me determination and drive. I grew up in a rough environment, one in which I soon understood nothing ever simply happened for me. As a Black, gay male in a community in which acceptance, when granted, sometimes seemed conditional, I struggled for my aspirations and for my identity. Despite such hardships, I refused to make my reality my identity. Instead, it fueled my determination to make a brighter future for me and for others. Life in Albany wasn't a picnic, but it taught a rich lesson in survival, in fortitude, and in determination. As a low-income student, I'm attuned to the burden of financial strain and wanting to break disadvantageous cycles for my family and for me. My family, and many such, struggled in such a way that, at times, big dreaming seemed a faraway dream. I have, however, hung tenaciously to a dream for me—one in which I could make a lasting, meaningful contribution, not for me alone but for those I care about most. That vision is entrepreneurial in its orientation. I have a long-term dream for hospitality and business, instilled in me at an early age, motivated by a desire for food and community. To me, food is not a necessity but a language that brings humans together. It can destroy walls and build spaces for joy, for connectivity, and for a sense of community. I dream one day to have a restaurant that reflects such values, a restaurant in which everyone of any age, any background, and any socioeconomic level can sit and feel at ease, celebrated, and encouraged. I hope it will not only serve a meal but a monument of community, of resilience, and of community empowerment. Attending an HBCU holds a high value for me. It’s not access to a college education; it’s access to entering a heritage wrought through years of Black achievement. HBCUs have long been spaces in which students such as I have seen, heard, and encouraged to thrive. HBCUs permit me a safe haven in which I can flourish academically and individually, with peers and faculty who understand and value my journey. For a student who feels oftentimes burdened with being misunderstood, an HBCU affords a valued and life-altering opportunity to become a part of a community that sees and celebrates Black identity in its many forms. More importantly, HBCUs have a legacy of creating changemakers—people who go out and break down walls and build communities. I'd like to become part of that legacy. With mentorship and an education, I hope to become prepared with the tools I will use in making my entrepreneurial dream a reality. I'd like to use my college years at an HBCU not only to learn, but to build, network, and lay a foundation for my future business. Ultimately, my dream is to build an establishment that reflects the character of my journey and holds opportunity for success for others, too. Once I have achieved my dream of opening a restaurant, I will pay it forward in meaningful ways. I'd like to build jobs and mentorship programs for youth, specifically for youth who, like me, have a feeling of being trapped in a specific environment. I'd like my establishment to become a source of hope, proving success can occur no matter where you're from and no matter what blocks your path. Not a mere establishment, I'd like my establishment to become a source of hope, a place in which dreams unfold, creativity blooms, and determination is encouraged. Aside from financial success, I'd like to leave a heritage of motivation and presence. I'd like my journey to become an example that persons such as I—persons who come out of challenging environments, persons who are quiet, persons who have labels placed upon them and go unnoticed—can break through obstacles and build successful lives. I'd hope to motivate persons to dream big and go for their aspirations unafraid. My journey continues, but I have with me values instilled, character developed through trials, and determination to make a positive impact. By studying at an HBCU, I'm not just earning a degree; I'm becoming my best and preparing to make a positive impact. I'm taking everything I learn and forging a brighter future for my family, my community, and me. With my actions, I hope to leave a lasting legacy of hope, entrepreneurship, and determination that inspires and empowers and recognizes the obstacles I have overcome. My journey, at its core, is one of opportunity—one that affirms with determination, fortitude, and community, even most ambitious dreams can become a reality
      Williams Foundation Trailblazer Scholarship
Growing up in a community where there was always a lack of resources, I became so aware of the barriers and difficulties that exist within the marginal and poor populations, including my own family and neighbors. This awareness triggered an inventive and motivational impulse in me: to do something to help and to take part in the satisfaction of their needs. The most helpful initiative that I ever launched was a back-to-school supply drive for kids in my neighborhood. All too often, I noticed, many families could not afford the basic supplies required for school, thereby limiting the opportunities for children to become successful students. I saw this gap and so organized a drive to collect and distribute those things every child needs in order to have a successful school year. I also contacted local businesses, churches, and community members and shared with them just how essential it is that children have the right materials in order to learn and prosper. Through this outreach, I am able to collect backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, and other supplies. I personally distributed them to families in need, making sure every child had what they needed to start the school year off right. Other than the supply drive, I have also volunteered my time as a tutor for younger students in my neighborhood. Many of the children I worked with came from low-income families where their parents were often working multiple jobs and didn't have the time or resources to provide academic support. I provided a safe, welcoming space where students could receive one-on-one help with subjects like math, reading, and writing. I also worked on building their confidence and fostering a love of learning. It was gratifying to witness an improvement in their academic performance, but most importantly, the sense of achievement they felt in surmounting their adversities. These were projects not only of material support but also of encouragement and empowerment for the people in education and their future. I learned that to change the system, one has to act directly yet simultaneously undertake long-term community upliftment. The results of these programs furthered my belief that if grassroots efforts are genuine and rooted in care and understanding, they really can succeed. This has been extended into a commitment to developing programs in the future that offer not only resources but also opportunities to equip people with the means and ability to break the vicious circles of poverty and marginalization. These experiences solidified my passion for advocating on behalf of these individuals who struggle against systemic obstacles and further motivated me to pursue higher education as a necessary skillset toward affecting longer-term changes in underserved communities.

Being the first generation in my family to graduate from college means breaking a generational curse of poverty and creating a legacy of hope and opportunity. It is not just about personal success; it is proof that there is success to be had despite all the struggles and challenges my family has had. A degree would be a testament to their sacrifices and an inspiration to my younger relatives and other people in my community who feel that their circumstances limit them. It's my way of paving a new path and showing that with perseverance, anything is possible. In college, I will study pre-med with the ultimate goal of becoming an anesthesiologist assistant. Medicine has always been an area that provides inspiration, being a field where direct involvement in helping people's lives is possible. Being an anesthesiologist assistant means carrying a very crucial role in the care of the patient to maintain comfort and ensure safety during all critical medical procedures. This career choice stands in alignment with my passion to help others, and also securing a financial future for myself and my family. Parallel to my pre-medical studies, I am also interested in learning about business and entrepreneurship. My dream someday is to be able to open a restaurant that will serve tasty, affordable food but at the same time will provide opportunities to people in my community. Food has always been one of the ways that I could be creative and bring people together, and I want to use it as a platform to inspire and uplift others. I want to be able to give back to people in my situation-struggling financially, lacking opportunities-through creating jobs and a chance for mentorship. My long-term goals are finishing my education, having a well-established career as an anesthesiologist assistant, and then opening a restaurant, with values like hard work, community, and perseverance. I want to inspire others that even from the most unlikely of circumstances, one can get up and move toward their dream. I envision making a difference in people's lives through my work in healthcare, as well as through business in the future. Achieving these goals would not only fulfill my personal aspirations but also allow me to give back to my family and community in ways that truly matter. With a college degree, I’ll have the knowledge, skills, and resources to build a better future and help others do the same. This opportunity represents the chance to turn my dreams into reality and leave a legacy of hope and resilience for generations to come.

Growing up in economic poverty really presented me with a great deal of trials that tested my determination to make me the man I am today. Perhaps one of the most difficult was trying to balance my education against the daily struggle of the family's financial well-being. It is really hard to study when you are not sure whether your family can make it for the week. These experiences instilled in me perseverance, resourcefulness, and a deep respect for hard work. Being an introvert added another layer of difficulty in my journey. Simple acts like raising your voice in class or talking with your peers felt overwhelming, and I often struggled to navigate spaces outside of my comfort zone. However, I came to realize that personal growth happens when you embrace discomfort. I have challenged myself to participate more in discussions and build relationships, and it has paid off in the way of confidence and communication skills, which I believe will serve me well throughout college and beyond. My ultimate aspiration is to be a successful businessman and eventually own a restaurant. To me, food is more than just nourishment; it is a medium through which creativity and community can be expressed. I want to open an affordable restaurant, which unites people and gives chances to people in need, like my case. This is what motivates me to pursue higher education and gain knowledge and develop skills that would enable me to break the intergenerational chain of poverty in my family. This scholarship would be life-changing. It will alleviate the financial burden of tuition, books, and transportation as I'm able to focus on my studies and long-range goals. Where there is no constant concern about making ends meet, my energy is able to be devoted to learning and preparing for the future. This support would give me confidence and stability in pursuing my dream of setting up a business that caters not only to the needs of family but extends further towards helping needy people. Though problems may have surrounded me, it dawned on me that misfortunes do not define you but instead create your character and will to be stronger. Each and every situation has prepared me for the opportunities ahead, and I am going to make the best out of them. This scholarship is the only key to transforming my dreams into reality; now I will be able to cross all the economic hurdles that would stand in the way of achieving this aim. More importantly, it would further enable me to help others through the creation of opportunities in similar situations. I look forward to taking this next step toward a brighter future and genuinely hope to avail this opportunity by trying to reach my goals while paying back to my community.
      Burke Brown Scholarship
I grew up in Georgia, especially in Albany, and have experienced an unequal educational system. Even though there are opportunities, such as the HOPE Scholarship and magnet programs, they seem unreachable for students who come from underfunded schools. The gap in the wealthy districts compared to the low-income areas where resources are limited makes students struggle to be able to dream big about the future. This for me means working harder to get some opportunities that others might have taken for granted. I relied on community programs, mentors, and sheer determination to navigate the system that shaped my dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. These challenges are also important as they show how much has yet to change within our educational system. Students hailing from communities like Albany deserve the same resources, mentorship, and opportunities provided to students in more privileged communities. Therefore, to address these issues, I propose the following solutions: 1. Formula for Equitable Funding: Schools in poorer communities rely too often on inadequate funding formulas based on property taxes. I support shifting to a formula that funds schools based on student need rather than on local wealth. This would even the playing field for schools with limited resources and provide equal opportunities for all students in education, technology, and extracurricular activities. 2. Career Mentorship Programs: Many students in underfunded schools lack exposure to potential career paths. Partnering with local businesses to create mentorship and internship programs would allow students to learn from professionals, build networks, and gain valuable skills. Programs like this would be especially impactful in underserved communities, where role models in diverse industries are limited. 3. Expanding College and Trade School Preparation: Not all students plan to attend college, but every student should have clarity about next steps. Scaling up dual enrollment programs, career and technical education, and trade school partnerships in under-resourced schools would open up options for students that best fit their interests and aspirations. 4. Mental Health Support: Mental health support should be provided for students. It would be highly beneficial to increase counselors and mental health resources, particularly for schools dealing with many systemic challenges, so that students can better handle their stress and be prepared for success in school. To implement these changes, I would start small, organizing mentorship programs in Albany, hooking students up with professionals and resources. Then I would work with local leaders, advocate for state-level policy changes, and apply for federal grants to bring more funding and programs into underfunded schools. By investing in the future of our students, we can help even the playing field and ensure each student has a chance to succeed.

My dreams are big, but they’re built on humble beginnings. As someone who grew up in a low-income household, I’ve learned the value of resilience and hard work. I dream of being an entrepreneur and owning a restaurant one day—a space where people can connect over food and where I can create opportunities for others who’ve faced financial struggles like I have. Life hasn’t been easy, but the challenges have shaped me. Balancing school while worrying about bills taught me how to persevere under pressure. As an introvert, stepping out of my comfort zone to network and speak up in unfamiliar spaces was intimidating, but I pushed myself because I knew growth only happens in discomfort. Currently, I’m focused on my education and building a foundation for my future. Though I haven’t started my business yet, I’m constantly learning and planning for the day I can turn my vision into reality. Community is important to me, and I aim to give back by providing jobs and mentorship to those in need—just as I’ve benefited from the support of others along the way. This scholarship would be life-changing. It would ease the financial burden of school and allow me to focus on gaining the knowledge and skills I need to succeed. Personally, it would give me the chance to break generational cycles of poverty. Professionally, it’s the first step toward making my dream a reality—creating a restaurant that doesn’t just serve food but serves a purpose. Despite the odds, I’ve never stopped believing in myself. This scholarship wouldn’t just be an investment in my education; it would be an investment in someone who is determined to rise and, eventually, lift others with them.

Growing up in a low-income household, I’ve faced challenges that tested my resilience and shaped the person I am today. One of the most significant obstacles has been balancing my education with the financial realities of my family. There were times when we didn’t know how we’d make ends meet, and it was difficult to focus on schoolwork while worrying about whether we’d have enough to cover basic needs. These experiences taught me perseverance, resourcefulness, and the value of hard work. As an introvert, navigating environments that required me to step out of my comfort zone added another layer of difficulty. Whether it was speaking up in class or networking with peers, I often felt overwhelmed. Over time, however, I’ve learned that stepping into discomfort is where growth happens. By pushing myself to engage, I’ve built confidence and communication skills that will serve me well in college and beyond. One of my dreams is to become an entrepreneur and eventually own a restaurant. Food has always been a source of connection and creativity for me, and I want to create a space that fosters community and provides opportunities for others like me who have faced financial struggles. This dream drives me to pursue higher education, not only to gain the skills I need to succeed but also to break the cycle of poverty in my family. This scholarship would be a game-changer. As a low-income student, every expense—tuition, books, transportation—feels like a mountain to climb. The financial burden of college is daunting, but with support, I can focus fully on my education instead of worrying about how I’ll pay for it. This opportunity would allow me to continue my journey toward achieving my goals and, one day, give back to others who face the same struggles I’ve endured. Through all the challenges, I’ve learned that adversity doesn’t define you—it refines you. I am committed to making the most of every opportunity that comes my way, and I hope this scholarship will be one of those opportunities.

Growing up as a low-income Black male in America, I’ve faced both unique challenges and powerful lessons that have shaped my identity and dreams. Living at the intersection of social and racial barriers has taught me to define myself in a world that often overlooks or misunderstands people like me. My journey hasn’t been easy, but it has taught me resilience, and I’ve developed a clear sense of purpose and ambition along the way. This essay is my chance to share the experiences that drive me to succeed and pursue my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Coming from a low-income background has meant that many opportunities are not easily available to me. My family has always had to be resourceful, working hard and making sacrifices to ensure that I have a chance to pursue my goals. While some may take certain privileges for granted, I have learned to deeply value every opportunity, whether it’s education, a mentorship, or a scholarship like this one. Facing financial limitations has taught me to be adaptable, think creatively, and appreciate the power of hard work. Each experience overcoming obstacles has fueled my determination to rise above the limits society sometimes places on people like me. I want to build a future where I can support myself, honor my family, and lift up my community. My dream of owning a restaurant is about more than just business; it’s about creating a space that reflects the values of community, culture, and resilience that my family has instilled in me. For me, a restaurant represents a place where people come together—a gathering spot where they feel welcomed, connected, and celebrated. Growing up, my family prioritized sharing meals, whether we were cooking traditional dishes or experimenting with new flavors. I often watched my parents work hard to make even the simplest gatherings memorable, and it inspired me to create something similar. I envision a space that goes beyond serving food; I want it to be a hub for connection and a place where culture and community thrive. Through my restaurant, I hope to celebrate Black culture, honor my roots, and create a space where people from all backgrounds can come together. These goals are also fueled by my desire to address the inequalities I’ve witnessed. Even as a young person, I have seen the impact of economic and social barriers on those around me. I believe that entrepreneurship can be a way to uplift communities and foster change. By creating a welcoming space in my future restaurant, I hope to bridge gaps, promote understanding, and offer something positive and lasting to my community. This scholarship is a critical step toward achieving my dreams. It would allow me to focus on my studies, gain the knowledge I need to start a business, and prepare for a future where I can make a meaningful impact. I am determined to succeed, not just for myself, but for those who have supported me and for others who might see themselves in my story. By working hard, pursuing my education, and achieving my entrepreneurial dreams, I hope to honor my heritage and inspire others to rise above the limits society may place on them.

I am pursuing a major in Business Administration because I believe that business has the power to drive meaningful change, particularly in underserved communities. This field offers the unique opportunity to combine my passion for social justice and empowerment with practical skills that can create tangible solutions to the challenges faced by many individuals and families. Throughout my life, I have been inspired by entrepreneurs who have used their businesses as vehicles for positive impact—whether through creating jobs, improving access to resources, or fostering a sense of community. These examples have shaped my understanding of business as not only a means of personal success but also a powerful tool for social transformation. My interest in Business Administration grew stronger after the loss of my brother, a pivotal event that profoundly altered my perspective on life. His passing was not only a personal loss but also a catalyst for me to reevaluate my goals and my purpose in the world. I realized that in order to make a real difference in my community and beyond, I needed to equip myself with the skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship and business management. My brother’s legacy—his generosity, resilience, and unwavering support for others—continues to motivate me to create opportunities for those who are often marginalized or excluded from economic success. I want to use the power of business to empower people to build better lives, just as my brother did for those around him. Business Administration is the ideal path for me because it provides the foundation to develop the skills I need to achieve my vision of economic empowerment. The knowledge I will gain in areas such as financial management, marketing, operations, and strategic planning will not only help me start and run a successful business but will also allow me to mentor others in building their own ventures. I envision creating programs that provide resources, mentorship, and education in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and business management to underrepresented groups. Through these initiatives, I hope to create a cycle of empowerment—helping others break the cycle of generational poverty and build sustainable businesses that contribute to the overall strength and resilience of their communities. Moreover, a degree in Business Administration will allow me to approach challenges with a mindset that values both innovation and social responsibility. As I continue to learn and grow in this field, I aim to address issues such as economic inequality, lack of access to education, and limited opportunities for people of color in business. I want to use my education to advocate for policies and practices that promote economic justice, financial literacy, and equitable access to business resources. Ultimately, my goal is to not only succeed in my own entrepreneurial journey but to create a lasting impact by helping others reach their full potential. In conclusion, Business Administration is not just a career choice for me—it is a pathway to achieving a broader vision of economic empowerment and social change. By combining the practical tools of business with a deep commitment to community upliftment, I hope to create opportunities for others, build sustainable businesses, and foster an environment where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive. My education in this field will be the foundation on which I build not only my career but also a lasting legacy of empowerment and transformation.

Music has had a profound and transformative impact on my life throughout my high school years. From the pressures of academics to navigating personal challenges, music has always been there as a source of comfort and strength. Whenever I felt overwhelmed or stressed, music became my refuge, offering me a space to relax and regain focus. It has allowed me to process my emotions, calm my mind, and approach challenges with a clearer perspective. Whether it was a difficult test, a tough project, or moments of personal loss, music helped me manage stress and find peace amidst chaos. It became a tool I could rely on to keep me grounded and emotionally balanced, especially when life felt unpredictable or overwhelming. Beyond helping me stay calm and focused, music has also inspired me to be more creative and expressive. It has pushed me to explore new interests and develop skills that I never knew I had. Whether it was learning to play new instruments or exploring different genres of music, the process of discovering new sounds has been incredibly rewarding. This creativity has spilled over into other parts of my life, especially when faced with challenges in school or personal situations. I’ve learned that persistence and hard work, much like perfecting a song or mastering an instrument, lead to growth and success. Music has helped me approach life with a more open mind, encouraging me to seek out new ways to solve problems and express myself. Music has also significantly contributed to my academic success by helping me focus and stay productive. I often listen to instrumental music or soft beats while studying or working on assignments. This helps block out distractions and allows me to concentrate for longer periods. Music has taught me how to manage my time effectively, making study sessions feel less stressful and more enjoyable. I’ve learned that music can serve as a backdrop to enhance focus and creativity, making even the most mundane tasks more enjoyable and efficient. Through all of these experiences, music has been a consistent presence in my life, allowing me to grow, reflect, and stay motivated throughout my high school journey. Music has not only helped me stay focused and calm but has also fostered a deeper sense of self-discipline. The practice required to master an instrument or learn a song has taught me patience and perseverance, skills that I’ve carried into other areas of my life. It has encouraged me to set goals, stay committed, and take pride in the progress I make. The dedication involved in learning new pieces of music mirrors my approach to academics and personal growth, reminding me that success doesn’t come overnight but is built through consistent effort. Ultimately, music has shaped my mindset, teaching me to embrace challenges with a positive attitude and to always strive for improvement. It’s been more than just an escape; it’s been a catalyst for my personal development, instilling qualities of focus, creativity, and resilience that will continue to guide me beyond high school.

My parents’ story and work ethic have played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. From a young age, I watched them work tirelessly to provide for our family, often sacrificing their own comfort and needs to ensure that we had everything we needed. Both of my parents came from humble beginnings, and their journey was not easy. They didn’t come from wealth or privilege, but they taught me that hard work, perseverance, and determination were the true keys to success. This example of grit and resilience has profoundly influenced my outlook on life and work, teaching me to value effort, commitment, and the importance of self-sufficiency. Growing up, I saw my parents face numerous challenges, yet they never let adversity define them. My mother, who worked long hours in various jobs, always emphasized the importance of education and hard work, making sure that my siblings and I understood that nothing worth having comes without effort. My father, who often worked multiple jobs, would come home exhausted but still find the energy to spend time with us and teach us the importance of perseverance. Watching them balance their demanding work schedules while still maintaining a sense of responsibility to our family instilled in me a deep sense of duty and ambition. They showed me that hard work isn’t just about putting in the hours, but also about maintaining integrity and doing your best, even when no one is watching. Their example has shaped my own approach to challenges. I’ve learned that success is not handed to you; it’s earned through consistent effort, sacrifice, and a willingness to push through difficult times. Whether it’s academic challenges, personal setbacks, or professional obstacles, I approach every task with the mindset that I must earn my success. Their work ethic has also instilled in me a sense of gratitude, understanding that many of the opportunities I have today are the result of their sacrifices. My parents taught me that nothing is guaranteed in life, but with determination and the right attitude, I can overcome any obstacle. Their legacy has also influenced my career aspirations. I now strive to create opportunities for others, just as they created a better future for me through their relentless efforts. As I pursue my education and future career, I am committed to carrying forward the lessons they’ve taught me about hard work, perseverance, and the importance of giving back to the community. Their story has shaped my values and instilled in me a deep respect for the power of hard work and resilience in achieving success.

As a child, I dreamed of becoming a police officer. I was fascinated by the idea of helping others and serving my community, which led me to admire the role of law enforcement in maintaining safety and order. I envisioned myself patrolling the streets, protecting those who were vulnerable, and making a tangible difference in people’s lives. The sense of justice and responsibility that came with the role appealed to me, and I saw it as a way to positively influence my neighborhood, keeping it safe and secure for everyone. At that time, I believed that being a police officer was the best way to give back to my community and help those in need. However, as I grew older and gained more experiences, my perspective on how to best serve my community evolved. While my desire to help others remained strong, I began to realize that there were other, perhaps more sustainable ways, to make a meaningful impact. I became increasingly interested in the broader social and economic challenges that many communities face, particularly underserved ones. I realized that there were systemic issues beyond just safety—issues like financial instability, lack of educational resources, and limited access to entrepreneurship opportunities—that contributed to the struggles of many individuals. This led me to pursue a degree in Business Administration with the goal of empowering people through education, mentorship, and creating economic opportunities. Although my career aspirations have shifted from becoming a police officer to pursuing a career in business, my core values and motivations have remained the same. I still want to help others and support my community, but I now believe that the best way for me to do so is by focusing on economic empowerment and providing individuals with the tools they need to succeed. Through entrepreneurship, I can create job opportunities, foster financial literacy, and guide aspiring business owners from underserved communities toward self-sufficiency and growth. By giving people access to education, mentorship, and networks, I hope to lift them up and help them achieve long-term success, just as I once hoped to protect and uplift my community through law enforcement. In many ways, the mission I set out with as a child—serving and protecting—still guides my actions today, but the scope of my efforts has broadened. I now see the potential to make a lasting, sustainable difference in my community not just by enforcing laws, but by tackling the root causes of inequality and providing people with the opportunities and resources they need to thrive. Even though my career path has changed, the desire to support and uplift others remains at the heart of everything I do.

My academic qualifications in Business Administration will serve as a foundation for empowering the African-American community by increasing access to entrepreneurial opportunities, self-sufficiency, and economic independence. I firmly believe that education holds the key to unlocking the potential of underrepresented groups, and I plan to use my degree not only to succeed in the business world but also to give back to my community through mentorship, coaching, and providing access to critical resources. One of my core focuses is to promote financial literacy and entrepreneurship within the African-American community, as I believe that having access to these essential skills will help individuals navigate the often-complicated regulatory systems that create barriers to success. By eliminating these obstacles, I aim to help people achieve economic independence and build sustainable businesses that will continue to support future generations. As a business major, I am committed to fostering an environment that nurtures the success of African-Americans in both business and broader society. Whether through personal entrepreneurial endeavors, workshops on empowerment, or active involvement in community development, I intend to create opportunities for African-Americans to thrive. The cycle of generational poverty can be broken, and my goal is to provide individuals with the necessary tools—skills, resources, and networks—that will help them achieve financial self-sufficiency and long-term prosperity. My vision is for a community where dignity, resilience, and hope are at the forefront, and where African-Americans no longer just survive, but excel in their personal and professional lives. Furthermore, I am dedicated to increasing the representation of African-Americans in leadership and decision-making positions, both in business and beyond. By ensuring that African-American voices are heard and their unique needs are addressed, I believe we can create more inclusive industries that better reflect the diversity of our society. I have applied to two renowned Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College. These institutions are known for their rich history of academic excellence and their commitment to producing graduates who are leaders and change-makers in their communities. Although I have not yet committed to either school, I am excited about the opportunity to attend an HBCU. I strongly believe that an HBCU environment will provide the academic rigor and supportive community I need to thrive both personally and professionally. With strong business programs and a legacy of success within the African-American community, I am confident that attending an HBCU will help me develop the skills and networks needed to succeed in the business world and make a positive impact on my community. I look forward to engaging with students and alumni who share the same passion for the growth and development of African-American communities, and I am excited to contribute to that collective mission.

Losing my brother was a very major event that left me numbed, and it changed my outlook on life. His death taught me many things: loss, grief, and the resilience to keep pushing forward toward goals. In this essay, I will try to share with you my walk through loss and seek strength in the values he left behind as I explore my vision for economic empowerment and community upliftment. My brother was my role model and best friend; he brought out the best in me and emphasized kindness, laughter, and hard work. His charm welcomed everyone, and he was ever ready to help. Lessons in generosity and resilience from him I carry even today. When he died, it felt as though a part of me was lost, not just my brother. Over the following months and years, I learned to live without him, promising to be someone he'd be proud of. One dream is to become an entrepreneur and own a restaurant. Food brought us together; some of my favorite memories are cooking with him for friends and family. A restaurant would be more than a business; it would honor the community and connection he loved. I want to create a home-like place for people to share stories and find comfort in. One where we can uplift one another and celebrate life's events. To be that friend who exudes kindness, just as my brother showed me. Losing him taught me many lessons about mental health and seeking help from the community around me. In his death, I found solace in friends who could empathize; this taught me the worth of support through the harsh times and how being there for someone can make all the difference. Through volunteering, mentoring, or just being a friend, my motivation has been to honor my brother and uplift underrepresented communities in line with my business aspirations. I see programs providing education, mentorship, and resources for each entrepreneur. I will organize workshops on financial literacy, digital skills, and business management with local organizations to prepare participants for business success. I am pursuing my dreams in memory of my brother; that keeps me focused. And despite the hurdles and self-doubt, honoring his legacy drives me. This scholarship is an opportunity to build upon the foundation that my brother helped create within my life. Furthering my education and business goals in his honor, with the intent of impacting others, holds deep meaning. His loss has taught me to be strong through resilience, love, and purpose. My journey formed me into a person: one who sees challenges as opportunities for growth, one who values community, one who creates spaces of comfort. This scholarship will enable me to change my pain into purpose and build a future that honors my brother, reaching out to others in need.
      Future Leaders Scholarship
One of the most influential moments I demonstrated leadership during high school was in my junior year, when my English class was assigned a group project to analyze Shakespeare's *Macbeth*. My group was responsible for exploring the themes of ambition and power. From the start, it was clear the project would be difficult. There was disengagement among team members, poor communication, and a lack of direction. As the group leader, it became my responsibility to ensure we worked together effectively. The first challenge was the lack of cohesion within the group. While I was eager to dive into the project, several team members were either uninterested or overwhelmed. Not everyone was contributing, and some procrastinated. This created frustration among the more motivated members, and as the deadline approached, stress levels rose. Another issue was differing perspectives on how to approach the themes of ambition and power. Some wanted to focus on historical context, while others were more concerned with psychological aspects. This lack of consensus made it hard to form a unified approach. Time management also became a concern, as schoolwork and extracurricular activities made it difficult to find time to meet outside of class. To address these challenges, I used several strategies: open communication, delegation, and time management. I called a group meeting to address the issues and encouraged everyone to voice their concerns. This allowed me to understand where each person was struggling. After listening, I proposed breaking the project into smaller sections. I suggested we focus on sub-topics such as the influence of external forces on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s role in his downfall, so that everyone could focus on a specific aspect. Recognizing everyone’s strengths, I delegated tasks based on individual skills. One member with strong writing skills developed the script, while another, with a talent for design, created the slides. I coordinated the group’s efforts to ensure everything came together cohesively. I also created a timeline with deadlines for each section and scheduled regular check-ins to monitor progress. We used a shared digital folder for asynchronous collaboration, which kept us on track despite our busy schedules. The results were rewarding. Our presentation was well-received by both our teacher and classmates. We received an A+ for our thorough analysis, and our creativity and clarity were praised. The experience taught me important leadership lessons: how to guide a group, communicate effectively, and adapt when challenges arise. These skills will be valuable in any future team-based work. This experience deepened my understanding of leadership. In my career, I plan to apply the same principles: clear communication, delegation, and time management. I now understand that leadership is not about commanding others but about motivating and organizing a team toward a shared goal. Black Excellence Scholarship
One attribute of Black Excellence that resonates deeply with me is the idea of thriving with an indomitable will. To me, this means having an unwavering commitment to my goals, no matter how difficult or long the road may be. I believe that possessing this type of resolve is essential to overcoming the obstacles that life inevitably presents. Throughout my life, I've had experiences that tested my resilience and my ability to keep pushing forward. From facing academic challenges in school to navigating personal struggles, I’ve learned that success is not about avoiding difficulties but about learning to face them head-on and never giving up. I embody the attribute of indomitable will by maintaining focus on my long-term goals, even in the face of setbacks. For example, during my high school years, I encountered struggles with standardized testing and college applications. At times, it felt like I wasn't going to make it to my dream school, but I didn’t let those challenges deter me. I sought tutoring, worked with mentors, and dedicated countless hours to improving my skills. The result was not only an acceptance letter to a prestigious university but also a deep sense of accomplishment in knowing that my persistence, despite the odds, had paid off. Even now, as I pursue my career goals, I hold tightly to this attribute. Whether it’s taking on a new project at work, overcoming obstacles in my personal life, or setting new learning goals, I approach every challenge with the mindset that I will find a way to succeed, no matter what it takes. The journey may not always be easy, but my commitment to pushing through has allowed me to continually progress. This indomitable will also influences how I approach my relationships. I make it a point to stay committed to my family, friends, and community, even when things get tough. Whether it's offering support in a time of need or pushing others to reach their potential, I believe that showing up and staying committed—no matter how hard—is a key component of true leadership and success. One attribute I believe is my greatest area for improvement is prioritizing and managing time. While I’m a highly motivated and ambitious individual, I sometimes struggle with balancing multiple responsibilities and tasks. Often, I find myself caught up in the rush of trying to complete everything at once, which can lead to stress and inefficiency. I can definitely do better when it comes to managing my time in a way that not only maximizes my productivity but also ensures I maintain balance in my life. To improve in this area, I’ve developed a plan to better prioritize my tasks and use my time more effectively. First, I plan to implement time-blocking techniques where I allocate specific blocks of time to different tasks based on their urgency and importance. For example, rather than jumping between tasks throughout the day, I will focus on one specific task at a time, breaking larger projects down into smaller, manageable parts and allocating a set amount of time for each part. This will help me to remain focused on the task at hand and reduce the tendency to procrastinate. Next, I will prioritize daily and weekly goals. Every morning, I will set clear, actionable goals for the day, ensuring I focus on the most important tasks first. I will also do a weekly review at the end of each week, evaluating what I accomplished and adjusting my goals for the following week. By keeping track of my goals and progress, I can ensure that I’m not only staying on track but also focusing my energy on what truly matters. Additionally, I plan to be more mindful of how I spend my free time. I sometimes find myself wasting time on distractions like social media or unnecessary tasks that don’t align with my long-term goals. To combat this, I will set clear boundaries around my time, limiting distractions and allowing myself to recharge without feeling guilty. I will also make time for self-care, ensuring that my schedule is balanced and that I’m not overworking myself, which can lead to burnout. Finally, I will hold myself accountable by sharing my goals with a mentor or peer, someone who can help keep me on track and remind me of the importance of effective time management. I believe that by focusing on these strategies and creating a more structured approach to time management, I can improve my efficiency and reduce stress, ultimately achieving greater success in both my personal and professional life.
      Black Leaders Scholarship
When I think about a Black leader who has inspired me, Barack Obama immediately comes to mind. As the first Black president of the United States, his story represents not only a personal triumph but also a monumental shift in American history. His leadership, vision, and steadfast commitment to justice have influenced my life and continue to inspire me today. Growing up, I sometimes believed that the color of your skin or your background determined how far you could go in life. Obama’s life and rise to power shattered that idea. Born to a Kenyan father and a white American mother, Obama was raised in an unconventional manner. He didn’t come from wealth, and his journey to the presidency wasn’t paved with privilege. He faced the same racial prejudices many Black Americans face, but he overcame these obstacles through determination, hard work, and an unwavering belief in the possibility of change. What impresses me most about Obama is his resilience. He didn’t let the barriers set before him—whether because of his race, mixed heritage, or the systemic inequalities in society—define his future. Instead, he used his experiences to fuel his drive to succeed, and more importantly, to serve. Obama’s rise to the White House is a testament to the power of perseverance, and it gave me the confidence to believe that, no matter the odds, success is possible if you stay focused and committed to your goals. What truly made Obama’s leadership special was his message of hope and unity. His 2008 campaign, centered around the "Yes We Can" slogan, felt like a breath of fresh air in a country divided along racial, political, and economic lines. His vision for America wasn’t just about policy changes; it was about creating a nation where everyone, regardless of background, had a stake in the future. His ability to unite people, to make us feel that we could rise above divisiveness, was nothing short of inspiring. I remember watching his speeches, both during and after his presidency, and how powerful it was that he addressed the challenges faced by Black Americans and other minority groups, yet still called for a broader sense of unity. His presidency wasn’t just about passing laws or reforms; it was about changing the narrative. He spoke directly to racial injustice, but still encouraged all Americans to come together for a better future. Through this, he showed me the importance of using my own voice to advocate for change, even when the issues seem complex and overwhelming. Perhaps the most significant impact Obama had on me was his commitment to social justice and racial equality. He didn’t shy away from discussing police brutality, income inequality, or flaws in the criminal justice system—issues that disproportionately affect Black Americans. While some criticized him for not doing enough, I always admired his ability to bring awareness to these issues, even when it was uncomfortable or politically difficult. His approach taught me that leadership is about staying true to one’s principles and working toward a better future, even in the face of opposition. Barack Obama’s presidency continues to inspire me because it was never just about breaking barriers—it was about creating new opportunities. His legacy reminds me that, no matter where I come from, I have the power to create change. More than his policies, it’s his character, compassion, and belief in the potential for change that have left a lasting impression on me. Reflecting on his leadership, I’m reminded that my own journey, no matter how challenging, can lead to meaningful change if I stay committed to making a difference.

Creating lasting change through economic empowerment and business innovation requires a steadfast commitment to fostering inclusive environments where underrepresented communities can truly thrive. My vision centers on developing comprehensive programs that provide access to education, mentorship, and essential resources for aspiring entrepreneurs in these communities. By harnessing technology and innovative business models, we can create opportunities that directly tackle the unique challenges these groups face. A pivotal component of this vision involves forging strategic alliances with local organizations. These partnerships would facilitate workshops focused on financial literacy, digital skills, and business management. Educating individuals in these areas is crucial, as it equips them with the knowledge and tools necessary to launch and sustain their businesses. Access to capital and networking opportunities will also be integral, helping to build a fair economic ecosystem that supports minority-owned businesses. Additionally, these programs can be tailored to address specific community needs, such as access to resources that aid in product development or marketing strategies that resonate with diverse audiences. For instance, training sessions could include insights on leveraging social media for business growth, or understanding consumer behavior within their local markets. By providing a holistic approach to business education, we can empower individuals to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship effectively. My career goals in business align seamlessly with this vision, as I aspire to work in areas related to social impact, particularly in corporate social responsibility or social entrepreneurship. I am deeply committed to advocating for policies that promote diversity in hiring practices and support small businesses. Through this program, I intend to leverage my skills and knowledge to influence systemic change, integrating equity into business operations that empower underrepresented communities to achieve social justice. Ultimately, I believe that by empowering individuals, we can foster resilience within entire communities, leading to long-term economic stability. This approach not only uplifts individuals but also encourages a culture of leadership and inspiration, where empowered individuals become catalysts for change in their neighborhoods. The ripple effect of such empowerment can be profound; as one person gains confidence and resources, they can inspire others, creating a network of support and innovation. In conclusion, my vision for economic empowerment and business innovation is rooted in the belief that inclusivity and education are the keys to driving meaningful change. By prioritizing these elements, we can build a future where underrepresented communities not only survive but thrive, ultimately contributing to a more equitable society for all.

My brother was my role model and closest friend, someone who brought out the best in me and showed me the importance of kindness, laughter, and hard work. When he passed, I felt the ground beneath me shift, as though I’d lost not just a brother, but a part of myself. In the months and years that followed, I learned to navigate life without him and to find strength within myself. I promised to honor him by becoming the kind of person he would be proud of. This experience opened my eyes to how much support means during hard times and how impactful it can be to show up for others. Whether through volunteering, mentoring younger students, or just being a friend to those in need, I’ve made it my mission to give back to my community in ways that honor my brother’s spirit. Growing up as a middle-class Black male in America, I’ve lived a life shaped by both privilege and prejudice, navigating the intersecting layers of social and racial challenges that have formed my identity and driven my ambitions. These experiences have taught me resilience, self-reliance, and a vision for creating change. Writing this essay allows me to share the struggles and strengths that have come from living at this unique intersection. Being part of a middle-class family has provided me with access to a good education, opportunities for growth, and a strong support system. Yet, while these resources have been invaluable, they haven’t shielded me from the stereotypes and assumptions often associated with being Black. My achievements in school, for example, are sometimes questioned or credited to external help rather than recognized for the hard work I put in. This constant push to prove myself, even in environments where I’ve earned my place, has fueled my determination to break barriers and build something of my own. This motivation is at the core of my dream to be an entrepreneur and, one day, to own a restaurant. My vision of owning a restaurant isn’t just about starting a business; it’s about creating a space where community, culture, and connection thrive. Growing up, I witnessed my family embody values of togetherness and hard work. My parents invested countless hours into their work to provide me with a good life, one that celebrated both our Black heritage and middle-class status. They showed me the importance of resilience, kindness, and generosity. A restaurant, for me, would be a way to honor these values by fostering a space where people from all backgrounds feel welcome, uplifted, and connected. Food has a unique way of bringing people together, and I want my restaurant to serve as a bridge between cultures, a place where diversity is celebrated and understanding is built. Even as part of the middle class, I’ve seen and experienced inequality that has motivated me to work toward change. I feel a responsibility to advocate for fairness and empathy, especially across communities that may not often intersect. In high school, I began volunteering as a mentor for younger students, helping them navigate academic and social challenges. These experiences have shown me the power of guidance and the importance of lifting others as we climb. I want my future business to reflect this commitment by engaging with the community, supporting local initiatives, and creating opportunities for youth development. As I pursue my goals, I am deeply aware of the importance of representation. For young Black men who look like me, seeing someone who has overcome similar obstacles and achieved their dreams can make all the difference. I aspire to be that example. With this scholarship, I hope to continue my education, deepen my understanding of business, and bring my vision for a community-centered restaurant to life. I want to honor where I come from by building a legacy that uplifts others and contributes to a more equitable and welcoming society. Being a middle-class Black male in America has given me a unique perspective—one that combines thankfulness with a strong sense of responsibility and ambition with empathy. My journey is marked by resilience, purpose, and a commitment to creating spaces of inclusion. This scholarship is an essential step toward achieving my goals, and I am determined to use it to continue breaking down barriers, fulfilling my business dreams, and inspiring others on a similar path.
