Stephan L. Daniels Lift As We Climb Scholarship
I want to pursue a career in STEM, specifically in cybersecurity, because I see it as a powerful way to protect people, create opportunities, and uplift my community. As an African American student preparing to attend Sam Houston State University while continuing my journey in Army ROTC and serving as a 15P Aviation Operations Specialist in the U.S. Army, I have developed a strong interest in technology and how it can be used to both solve problems and prevent them.
My interest in cybersecurity comes from understanding how much of our world depends on technology. From personal information to financial systems and communication, everything is connected digitally. I want to be part of the group that protects that information and ensures that people and organizations are safe. In my military experience, I have seen how important systems, communication, and security are in mission success. That exposure made me want to go deeper and learn how to defend systems from threats and improve how they operate.
One of my biggest motivations for pursuing cybersecurity is the lack of representation of African Americans in STEM fields. Knowing that Black students make up a small percentage of STEM graduates pushes me to work harder and become part of the change. I want to show others in my community that it is possible to succeed in fields like cybersecurity, even when the odds may feel stacked against you.
My journey has not been easy, and I have had to learn how to be independent at a young age. I am working to pay for college on my own, which has taught me responsibility, discipline, and the importance of staying focused on my goals. I understand that nothing will be handed to me, and that mindset has pushed me to keep moving forward no matter what challenges I face. I have been building myself up, making sacrifices, and doing what I need to do to create a better future.
Receiving this scholarship would make a significant difference in my life. It would help relieve some of the financial pressure that comes with paying for my education on my own, allowing me to focus more on my studies and my development in cybersecurity. More importantly, it would be an investment in my future and in the impact I plan to make.
I plan to use my cybersecurity degree to help uplift my community in multiple ways. One of my goals is to educate others about online safety, financial security, and protecting personal information. Many people in underserved communities are more vulnerable to cyber threats because they may not have access to the right knowledge or resources. I want to change that by sharing information, mentoring others, and helping people protect themselves in an increasingly digital world.
In addition, I want to create opportunities by showing younger students that careers in cybersecurity and technology are achievable. Representation matters, and I want to be someone who inspires others to pursue careers in STEM. I believe that by giving back, mentoring, and staying involved in my community, I can help create a cycle of growth and opportunity.
Cybersecurity is more than just a career path for me—it is a way to protect, serve, and uplift others. Through hard work, discipline, and determination, I am committed to using my education to not only build a successful future for myself but also to make a lasting impact in the Black community.
Sgt. Albert Dono Ware Memorial Scholarship
The legacy of Sgt. Albert Dono Ware represents the highest ideals of service, sacrifice, and bravery. His commitment to something greater than himself is not only inspiring, but it also reflects values that have shaped my own personal journey. As an African American student, a member of Army ROTC, and a U.S. Army 15P Aviation Operations Specialist, I have learned that true success is not just measured by personal achievements, but by the impact we have on others and the responsibility we take on for our communities.
Service has been one of the most influential values in my life. Being involved in the military has taught me that service means showing up even when it is difficult, staying committed when things are challenging, and always being prepared to support others. In my role as a 15P, I understand how important every position is in accomplishing a mission. That same mindset carries over into how I approach my education and my involvement in my community. I strive to be someone who contributes, whether that is through mentoring, supporting peers, or simply setting a positive example.
Sacrifice is another value that has shaped who I am. The military requires discipline, time, and dedication, often putting the needs of the mission before personal comfort. This has helped me develop resilience and a strong work ethic. As an African American man pursuing higher education, I also recognize the sacrifices made by those who came before me—individuals who fought for opportunities that I now have access to. That awareness motivates me to take my education seriously and to maximize every opportunity given to me.
Bravery, to me, goes beyond physical courage. It is about having the confidence to pursue goals despite uncertainty, to stand firm in your beliefs, and to challenge systems that may not always be fair. In today’s society, the African diaspora in the United States continues to face challenges such as educational inequality, economic disparities, and limited access to resources in underserved communities. These issues require individuals who are willing to step up, take initiative, and advocate for change.
My vision for addressing these challenges focuses on both community-driven efforts and policy reform. One of the most critical areas that needs attention is access to quality education. Many communities still lack the resources, funding, and support systems needed for students to succeed. Policies that prioritize equitable funding for schools, access to technology, and mentorship programs are essential. Education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking cycles of poverty and creating long-term opportunities.
Another key area is economic empowerment. Supporting small businesses, increasing access to job training programs, and creating pathways for financial literacy can help strengthen communities. Too often, individuals are not given the tools or knowledge needed to build sustainable wealth. By investing in these areas, we can create stronger and more self-sufficient communities.
Community reform also plays a major role. Grassroots organizations, mentorship programs, and local leaders are essential in driving change at the ground level. Change cannot come from policy alone; it requires people who are actively involved and committed to making a difference. I believe in the importance of giving back, whether through volunteering, mentoring younger individuals, or simply being present and engaged in my community.
Key stakeholders in driving this change include educators, policymakers, community leaders, and individuals like myself who are willing to take action. Collaboration between these groups is necessary to create lasting solutions. The government can provide resources and structure, but communities must also be empowered to take ownership of their growth and development.
Sgt. Albert Dono Ware’s legacy reminds me that service is not limited to one role or one path. It is a lifelong commitment to making a difference. His sacrifice and bravery inspire me to continue pushing forward, not only for my own success but for the betterment of others. I am committed to using my education, my military experience, and my personal drive to contribute to meaningful change.
Through discipline, service, and a strong sense of purpose, I aim to build a future that reflects these values. I want to be part of a generation that not only recognizes challenges but actively works to solve them. This scholarship would support me in continuing that journey, allowing me to further develop the skills and knowledge needed to make a lasting impact.

Ben Brock Memorial Scholarship
My interest in geography and computer science has been shaped by both my academic curiosity and my experiences in the military. As someone involved in Army ROTC and serving with the U.S. Army as a 15P Aviation Operations Specialist, I have been exposed to real-world situations where geography, technology, and critical thinking all come together.
Geography became more than just a subject to me when I began to see how it directly impacts military operations. In my role as a 15P, I work in an environment where understanding locations, terrain, and movement is essential. Aviation operations rely heavily on geographic awareness, from coordinating flight missions to ensuring accurate communication and planning. This hands-on experience helped me realize that geography is not just about maps—it is about understanding the world in a way that allows people to make informed and strategic decisions.
At the same time, my interest in computer science grew from seeing how much technology supports everything we do. In aviation operations, systems, data, and communication tools are critical to mission success. I became interested in how these systems function and how technology can be used to improve efficiency, accuracy, and overall performance. Computer science represents an opportunity for me to build skills that can be applied both in the military and in civilian life, allowing me to solve problems and contribute to innovative solutions.
My involvement in Army ROTC and my service in the military have played a significant role in shaping my character. Through my training and experiences, I have developed discipline, leadership, and accountability. I have learned how to work under pressure, adapt to challenges, and stay focused on accomplishing the mission. These experiences have also led to personal achievements that I take pride in, as they reflect my commitment to excellence and my ability to perform at a high level in demanding environments.
Beyond technical skills, the military has taught me the importance of teamwork and responsibility. Every role matters, and success depends on the ability to trust and support those around you.
